Will the People app in Windows 8 have functionality like the Message Center in OS X, allowing you to send/receive your SMS messages from a Windows 8 machine?
And if not, is there a 3rd party solution to accomplish this?
@allquixotic 20 rep. :P Two upvotes on an answer. One from you, one from me. As long as it isn't so awful that he gets downvoted, he'll be able to talk in chat.
In our college , the students have to register with their laptop's MAC address with the administrator to use the wi-fi access to the system. otherwise, Even though is signal is available, we cant use the wi-fi services.
Can you computer experts, provide me a way to use the wi-fi without registe...

Well I was wondering if you could on the iPad and Android tablets, because last night I tried it on my Win8 tablet and found (to my surprise) that it's actually very doable and comfortable.
I wanted to know if that was typical
Though I suppose I shouldn't be surprised since Microsoft does have a "touch cover" for their Surface, which enables this plus the benefit of tactile keys...
Of course if you're not careful, your fingers start to drift and you can hit other places on the screen (as would be expected on a touchscreen with no physical keys). But if you pay attention, that isn't a problem.
@sidran32 I've never been able to touch type on an on-screen keyboard with any accuracy before, because I use the physical slots between the keys to align my fingers
when they invent touchscreens that can gently jut out subtle changes in elevation without destroying the screen, I'll try again
but my fingers are too used to feeling for the keys themselves and their relative positions to "grip" the keyboard and figure out how to consistently touch type
the only other mode of typing I know is using two or three fingers (usually one finger on each hand, or just one finger period, depending on device size) to hunt and peck on an on-screen kbd
@allquixotic Yeah. I understand that. But for me at least, I find it's pretty easy to pick up.
It took a lot of getting used to when I moved from a smartphone with a hardware keyboard to one with only a touchscreen. :P
Also, I hear they actually are working on touchscreens that can do that. Stuff to do with using electric signals to change the feel of the texture and screens that can bump... like the next level of haptic feedback. Pretty cool stuff. Admittedly, I haven't read up on it in a while, though.
Just had a user accidentally delete a folder off her desktop. Oddly it didn't go in the recycle bin, so I created a test file and what do ya know, nothing goes in the recycle bin. O_o
Is this normal if you point the desktop to a mapped network drive?
anyway, even if the encoding is very CPU-cheap (relatively) and the bandwidth is very low (relatively), having the CPU, camera, and network interface always on is going to absolutely destroy battery life
Whhhhyyy is accounting asking me what accounts things should be charged too? O_o I'm help desk. All I do is box up the replacement equipment and ship it places.
@OliverSalzburg presumably -- if the hardware camera's video stream is just MJPG (which is a bunch of slung together JPG images which would make a lot of sense), the CPU doesn't have to do much of anything to encode it
if the camera has its own dedicated ASIC that does the JPG encoding, the CPU just copies data from the camera to the network, real simple-like
@r.tanner.f Yeah, I was surprised about that too. Seems kickass all around and I can get it for $150 after rebate. Just wondering if I'm going to have to/want to spring for new fans after that
@OliverSalzburg It's pretty slick. It works well, just gotta be used to deftly holding the mouse (I don't grip it hard so the thin form factor isn't a problem for me).
The touch strip for scrolling is pretty neat. When I first got the thing, I kept playing with it (it has haptic feedback--each time it scrolls it "bumps").
My case I was using previously (until I swapped it for one that was larger) was a Thermaltake and a lot of people in reviews said that the fan controllers were quick to fail. However, after over a year, it worked well. Only replaced the rear case fan because it started making grinding noises.
From what I can tell, it's very hit and miss with them. I was using the Thermaltake Element G. It's a good case, but it was just a bit small for my graphics cards. I dealt with it for a while but finally wanted to get a slightly larger case and clean things up.
I've heard that thermaltake is on a mission of conquest, a mission, to ensure that all our heat are belong to them... they want to be the source of entropy in the universe... they want to be... the Big Bang
I made a big boo-boo.
I was setting up a Ubuntu Server and I wanted to allow the FTP client to access the /etc/ folder so I used the chown command to allow my account to use it. However, this changed the ownership of sudo and broke it. I can't run any commands as sudo because the owner is not ro...
@BenBrocka I have a Corsair Obsidian 650D. Coolest case I've ever had, in terms of functionality. Not interested in the cosmetics. Love the fact that it has a SATA (not eSATA O_O) drive bay on the external part of the case
Thinking I might get a 3.5" bare drive and use that as my backup drive instead of an external, throw it in the safe when I'm not using it. Cheaper than an external
@OliverSalzburg I made a comment, but should that comment perhaps be an answer? I don't really go into detail (CBA) but I do give him a sketch of how to go about fixing it
@BenBrocka My favorite thing about hot swap SATA bays is yanking a drive while it's powered on... I accidentally rotated the drive by rotating my wrist gently to the left (to turn the drive around) immediately after removing it, and the platters still had significant angular momentum the other way, and it felt like a Dyna-Bee :D
I bought an old Dell file server in college for the specific purpose of hot swapping drives. =D I had no other use for it than to sit there and pull drives out and watch it not BSOD. Worth every penny.
I honestly don't know what I'd do without Root Access and SU. You guys help me learn so much, and verify and reinforce what I already know, and I find the most interesting links here and really enjoy hanging out with people with common interests. I love you guys.
