Can magnets be harmful to a mobile phone?

I'd think not

Correct

Cool
Because I just built a magnet-based stand for my smartphone-based webcam :D
My cable is out :(
No proper internet is weird

@OliverSalzburg: the only part that might get affected is the magnetometer
if you have one

@JourneymanGeek Ok, cool. then I won't worry :D
btw, that IP webcam app for android
On my SGS1, it runs the battery dry after about 1h
Just for the record :P

12:51 AM
not suprised ;p

Well, I am
Because the display has to be active for the capturing to work
Apparently
There's a message that says it depends on the device if the display has to be on during capturing

ugh
that would do it

Greetings!

hah,
That's just wrong.
76 hours later...

1:03 AM
@jtbadn What's up?

this is a dumb assignment.
I have no idea what it is asking me to do.
dumb
@OliverSalzburg my friend @allquixotic invited me in here... still not sure why, cause he opened up another room for dummies like me to spout off my lack of programming knowledge :)
Why I'm still in here, I dunno.
He's always dragging me into stuff.

took an hour just to speak in here.

I am not a fan of dozens of needless LEDs on stuff.
But curse microsoft for not putting a single on on their bluetooth keyboard.

there is no such thing as a needless LED
except on fans

1:11 AM
And in front of casings
I just got new batteries and the device is still dead
keyboard manual do not stare into laserbeam
This keyboard might be a webcam. Or a headset, or a mouse.
The manual does not seem to know for sure

Yay
Internets are back
One hour and ten minutes!

yay, I need to learn about friends

1 hour later…
2:50 AM
Do you miss your childhood games of "ring the doorbell and run away"? Get a job as a parcel courier.

lol
@Hennes: this is why having a schauzer is useful

Heh. Yeah, I can see that. :)
or a barking cat

3:18 AM
@Hennes: They apparently paired mini schnauzers and GSDs together. mini schauzers have REALLY good hearing

tell me how it makes sense to call an election when less than 10% of the votes have been tallied?

3:35 AM
I have no idea

Bob
reminds me of a Simpsons episode...

4:10 AM
@jtbadn welcome to root access ;)

4:21 AM
herro :3

Oh hi!

@JaredTritsch it's based on exit polls and also on the assumption that as the votes roll in, the timeliness of when the votes are counted doesn't measurably affect the outcome... if the exit polls are meaningful and there isn't some weird thing like a majority of republicans voting late or something like that, then the outcome should remain fairly consistent
and you only need just enough information to get the electoral college vote decision

/me is on the bus now.
How are the US votes going?

@Sathya, @jtbadn is a friend of mine :P

@allquixotic so I hear :p

4:26 AM
@TomWijsman, all the big news media is confidently proclaiming that Obama has won the electoral college vote by a good margin.

@TomWijsman Obama's nearly got it, per news

It's 05:30 here, going home from party.
Thank you.
Kept it cheap, only 5 euro for the drinks. =D

I have a free drinks party to attend to tonight ;P

When I arrived it was double for the same price, so spent all on that, for the rest I managed to get free. Should try this more...
Bus trip is like 1 hour total.

Q: Can the People app alert me to incoming SMS messages from a Windows Phone 8 handset?

corwin01Will the People app in Windows 8 have functionality like the Message Center in OS X, allowing you to send/receive your SMS messages from a Windows 8 machine? And if not, is there a 3rd party solution to accomplish this?

Anyone hopefully have any different answer than what I've got so far?

4:37 AM
@allquixotic I've dropped the -O3 since it increases the compile time a lot for too small improvements. Still using LTO although I disabled that for some packages as they fail to link.

@TomWijsman that's pretty much the steady state that I'm stuck in

@corw Dunno, this looks like something only MS can tell...
@allq There's the whole O2 vs O3 discussion, O2 bought me there.

I laugh at the people who compile with -O99 :)
it's a synonym for -O3 (any number greater than 3 is a synonym for 3 at the moment) but it's supported

Got to switch bus soon, cya later...

1 hour later…
6:00 AM
this dude is one confused dude.

lol

databases and chrome... on web apps

6:28 AM
not the best place to post that, no

Is Mozilla marketplace on topic on webapps.se?

any idea why my Ivy Bridge GPU doesn't have a working OpenCL driver on Windows 8?

@Hennes Yes, but eSata sort of negates both cheap and easy at once, at least if I have a case with hot-swap bays

Hey guys, lookie. Fox news talks about bias in media.

@jokerdino if it deals with how to do x, then yes

6:35 AM
alright.

hm,
> desktop support is temporarily disabled

Need to use the bookmarklet.

@jokerdino I'm a democrat from a democratic family (swung to Green Party this year because I realized I really truly align with the green party more than the democratic party, and my vote isn't needed in my state because Obama won anyway by ~70%) and I watch our local Fox news a lot.. they seem fair or slightly liberal-leaning :P
might be because the local Fox station is residing in an extremely liberal demographic market and they're just catering to the market, but I don't watch Fox's national programs... the local program seems good tho

Green party is republican?

@jokerdino no they're not. the green party is a third party

6:38 AM
Ah, alright.

what they stand for is pretty much in their name. Serious environmentalists, not the dog and pony show of the two main parties

I know so little about politics, much less American.

> HP provides upgrade instructions and drivers for most computers sold after October 1st , 2011. - upgrade guide

I used to support the democratic party with a lot more fervor but they have really kind of merged into this centrist glob (along with the republicans) of late, so the distinction between the democratic and republican parties is much slimmer... hence the always close votes

and so there, HP wins the dick of the year award.

6:39 AM
@Sathya wow, that IS dicky.... even dickier than AMD dropping support for the Radeon HD4000

@Sathya what about the older comps? WTF?

Obama is a charismatic leader, and I agree with his social platform more or less... but I really wish someone would truly stand up to the issue of finite energy and climate change and make it a central part of their platform. Hence, the green party :P

@allquixotic: I think we need a sysadmin for president.
Automate government!

no, we need a physicist for president to direct funding appropriately :P

We need a little red alien as president.

6:43 AM
You know, the way the senate, congress and presidential race turned out, it sounds like the balance of power has remained exactly the same
a whole ton of incumbents got re-elected (I personally voted for no incumbents on my ballot)

which is not a great thing.. the same ole political blocks.

exactly
it's amazing to me
the vast majority of americans want change -- they're dissatisfied with the way things are

thats how politics works

but when we combine our votes, the end result is the exact same people
the same rulers as there were yesterday
woo, I'm running 490 Mhashes/sec on phoenix OpenCL kernel :)
makes for a great space heater

friend of mine in the US IMed me, then asked me to go on video chat, so I could help her fix her printer
and she runs OS X so I was like googling up instructions
it worked tho ;)

Q: Intel Ivy Bridge GPU OpenCL Not Working On Windows 8

allquixoticI seem unable to initialize hardware-accelerated OpenGL on the GPU side of the Intel Ivy Bridge GPU (it's on a Core i7-3700K chipset, with the HD4000 graphics core). This is a new problem on Windows 8. I distinctly recall having access to GPU-accelerated OpenCL on Windows 7. In fact, it came in ...

two days more, cannot help it superuser.com/a/502021/71027

i need to vote another 12 times to complete at least one tile ;p

@jokerdino you are in luck :P superuser.com/a/502025/71027
Is being a moron

9:21 AM
Is one question away from the elusive level 4

9:32 AM
@OliverSalzburg The superuser.com/faq page's css must be updates, the text there is too dark

10:15 AM
@HackToHell Yeah, I agree. I'll get to that :)
I added some crazy experimental stuff yesterday btw ;D

10:27 AM
yay moar shiny stuff

@HackToHell wth... "This image will shutdown and become completely unusable on November 13, 2012."
That sounds like a very strict limitation :D

0_o Why did ms do that with xp

@HackToHell I don't get it either
But it seems to apply to all images

10:51 AM
oh thats normal
they periodically change the images iirc

11:12 AM
Woohoo dog avatar ;)
@avirk hope you agree with my edits!

@JourneymanGeek Would be time for an update right now, I'd say :D

I just realised I've been plotting to build a new desktop since 09.
well, no, actually i was plotting to upgrade the shared desktop in 09 ;p
/me was looking through old tweets

Bob
o.O
congrats @HackToHell, @FiveO, @Kirk on level 4
that was fast

need more people

@JourneymanGeek Hi

11:26 AM
Here's something I really don't get about Windows 8. Maybe someone can explain this to me
So I'm downloading something in my Modern UI Windows 8 Store App Chrome
The download finishes and I click on it to start the .exe
The .exe starts on the Desktop
And nothing else happens. How am I supposed to magically know that something appeared on my Desktop?

@JourneymanGeek I was just checking my external hard drive to see if it worked properly. It gave me a transfer speed of 26Mbps. It took about a minute to transfer 3.3GB to and from the drive. It is a WD My Passport Essential

dosen't sound too bad

@JourneymanGeek it was on an eSata port
Motherboard has no support for USB 3.0
I get paranoid when I hear word Hard Drives now :D

These guys need to update their screenshots :P

@JourneymanGeek what I really liked about Win8 was the automated checking for bad sectors

11:31 AM
the passports are USB
you shouldn't be able to plug it in unless its one of those usb/esata combo ports
in which case its still communicating over USB

@JourneymanGeek That just blew my happiness bubble

@JourneymanGeek thats the right port
@JourneymanGeek do u have any idea about Bathtub Curve and failure of drives over time?

lol
wouldn't really matter unless you had a large array

I was told something about it related to my Scorpio drive's failure and I have no idea

11:35 AM
basically drives die
some drives die young
those are the weak

@JourneymanGeek Why must the good die young?

middle aged drives are less likely to die
then old drives tend to die of old age

aaaaahhh ok! SO my drive died because it was young?
@JourneymanGeek so When my new replacement is shipped in, what care should I take? Moderate use during the first 3months? :)

@FasihKhatib: au contrare
backups
and beat the hell out of it ;p

@JourneymanGeek being sarcastic??
:p

11:39 AM
actually metaphorically no
I'd probably use the drive heavily if I can to make sure that its not going to fail early

So, a blog post on Windows 8 in my mail...

the probability of failure is relatively low tho

@JourneymanGeek I use my internal for like 7 hours a day but for light use
and external is only for backup. So I would put it at an avg of 5 mins a day

@FasihKhatib: I have a syste, running 24/7 since 2007
drive's fine
I think I have a few old 40gb drives too

@JourneymanGeek so will u become the server for any of my Java projects if need be?
u know the ones where I need server on all the time?
I was planning on making something that would allow me to remotely see, just see, my desktop but then.. dedicated server :D

11:43 AM
@FasihKhatib: home desktop
planning on moving a good chunk of 24/7 stuff over to the pi tho

@JourneymanGeek I have this battery in my laptop that is dead
but I keep it inm
as dust protection
Should I chuck it out or let it stay in?

keep it in unless it starts bulging ;p

@JourneymanGeek my cell phone battery is bulging D:
time to replace I guess

...
unless you want to learn the literal meaning of 'hot pocket'

no, I am not interested, sorry. I have an oven that does just that

11:50 AM
ugh
pi dosen't have whois

@JourneymanGeek plugged in, not charging but still plugged in and forced to charge. Thats the ordeal my battery faces

@FasihKhatib: that sounds dangerous
is it a removable battery?

what? How

got a spare phone?

Yes, it is
It is may laptop's battery I am talking abiut. not cell phone

11:51 AM
oh, thats normal
REALLY short lifespan?

scared the **** out of me
@JourneymanGeek watch it!

cause its funny
It explains what goes on in the head of an Indian guy
@JourneymanGeek so I can safely beat the hell out of my new internal when it comes?

I would recommend it
@FasihKhatib: you do realise i'm a PIO, NRI and all those other TLAs right? ;p

ok.. I was told to go for moderate use

11:54 AM
naw

no, I do not know.

I'd actually suggest running something like sdelete on it at least once

what is sdelete?
is it like nuking?

little tool by system internals
has a interesting way of wiping a drive
take an empty drive, and 'clean free space'

I was told that even if I format the drive before partitioning, that would do the job

11:57 AM
formatting dosen't actually write every part of the drive
I've recovered everything from a drive I 'just' formatted before

How do I use SDelete before installing the OS?

oh you don't
you pop the drive into another system I guess
yanno
just assume the drive will fail and back it up
or..

No, I dont know. The only thing I know is DBAN

dban would work too

DBAN writes all zeroes on the drive?

11:59 AM
ya
or a pattern

dban.org/download will it work from a bootable USB?

I love dban and its warning messages
I believe so, Its been a while since I needed to secure wipe a drive

warning messages? :p
@JourneymanGeek G2Go but whats with the warning messages?

lol
"This WILL irretrivably wipe your drive"
... thats the whole point... innit?

YEAH

12:03 PM
I mean there's a reason and all
but i can't stop giggling uncontrollably when I see it. then say yes, MWAHAHAHAHA

what if the process stops mid way like power failure
@JourneymanGeek ??

dosen't matter

Why??

I actually used to do partial wipes on purpose

ok
Does it need OS installed?
It dont I guess
@JourneymanGeek...
@avirk glad u are here
we were discussing hard drives and DBAN

12:12 PM
@HaydnWVN sure I am agree with you :) Thanks to make it good.
@FasihKhatib same here :)
I will kill the Vodafone's dog someday.......Network sucks now ^_^

Yeah, the services have dropped to shit

@FasihKhatib they were good service provider in my area and now they are doing the same like BSNL.

BSNL--- worst

call drops during the converstaion.

@avirk I have to leave now. See you on FB Messenger, assuming you installed
I am, maybe, gonna use DBAN on my new replacement drive
and wipe it clean

12:15 PM
@FasihKhatib hehehehehehehe not yet, I was busy with some other stufss :P

@avirk do it now if possible

@FasihKhatib not now, I'll try if I can at dinner time :P

cya guys!!

You can chat here

where the f is logout button?

12:18 PM
@FasihKhatib press the leave buuton
@FasihKhatib here is no logout button close the tab and you done

@TomWijsman hi!
So you replied the mail?

1:00 PM
@avirk Twice, said we won't link him. Then he replies asking for another topic so I'm not replying anymore because he doesn't even read my responses.

@TomWijsman lol
I'm preparing myself to write a blog for Windows Time machine :P

A: Is there an equivalent to OSX time machine in Windows 8?

avirkNow Windows 8 supports the Time machine function of Mac OSX and its called File History. You can find it under the settings in the start screen by typing Recovery in search box or Control Panel > System and Security > File History. How is different from the Restore point It is comple...

@TomWijsman can you suggest me what is good to include?

1:23 PM
@avirk No idea, I'm a Linux user. :D
As much information as you want to type, I guess.

@TomWijsman :(
then I have to do a lots of typing now :P

@Bob thanks :)

@HackToHell congrats for level 4 :)

:)
I hit my rep cap again !! yay!

@HackToHell just today right?

1:38 PM
I have hit it before

I hit it continue on 25,26,27 OCt :P

I wish there was a cap on flag handling...
But then again... slhck would hit it every day and we have to handle them :\

@HackToHell yep, you wrote "again"
@OliverSalzburg lol

A: How do I shutdown Windows 8?

avirkWindows 8 still supports the command line feature to shut it down. You can just press the Win+R button to open the run dialog box and type the command shutdown /s /f /t 0 /s for shut it down /f for forcefully close any application and shut it down immediately /t for time...

slhck is an incredibly efficient crap cutter

@HackToHell I really don't see how he can get anything done at his job. I feel like I'm constantly on the site, yet, he gets like 4x more work done every day :D

1:40 PM
what a pity my answer is best there nut only 11 votes :(

@OliverSalzburg Maybe he's a bot ...

@OliverSalzburg he is very dedicated in background :)

@HackToHell I bet he's getting all those test subjects to do the work for him ;D

lol

A: Disable "automatic maintenance" in Windows 8

avirkYou can do it by task scheduler. For this open the task scheduler by typing task on the Modern UI under the Apps and you will find the Task Scheduler at the left side click it and open. Now go to following path Task Scheduler > Microsoft > Windows > Task Scheduler Here you have to right ...

guys will I get the bounty for that answer?

A: How can I run legacy versions of IE (IE7/IE8) on Windows 8?

HackToHellYou use virtual machines to do this, it is the easiest way. You use Hyper V and the VHD images provided by microsoft (or use a third party tool like virtual box). First off, setup Hyper V as per the instructions given by Kronos here. You can then download the respective vhd images from Micros...

approximately same answer I posted before @HackToHell but he get 14 and I only 2 upvotes :(

@avirk You did not propose a solution

A: How can I run legacy versions of IE (IE7/IE8) on Windows 8?

avirkAt the moment its not possible to use IE-8 on Windows 8 because it does not support it. While I tried to install the IE-9 on Windows 8 and it says that its already install on the machine. So if I'm getting correctly then it means that IE-10 has the running possibilities of IE-9. But I th...

@HackToHell I did at the last line with How to geek link :(

I explained :P

@HackToHell yup! My slow bandwidth don't let me do that with screen shots :(
Hey I got a star in chat today Oo
I never understand why guys put the bounty and never response back :P

@avirk Maybe they got their solution and stopped caring
You're thinking "Hey, you paid reputation for this, why would you not come back and check?" But that's only because you worked hard to earn it ;D

A: How do I manage what is in the New context menu in Windows 8?

avirkThe easiest way to use a GUI program which is very handy in this situation. I'm recommending it because its not good to play with registry when you are not familiar with it. Just download new menu editor and install it, it need .Net Framework 3.5 or higher to run. The right side panel ...

1:56 PM
Some people just like to blow their network bonus on a bounty and never return

I posted it before he puts the bounty, but still yet he never replied

@avirk The bounty doesn't end for another 3 days. What's the problem?

@OliverSalzburg hmm that could be possible :P

Oh, he put it up after your answer. Yeah, I see
That's weird

@OliverSalzburg yep! that's what I'm talking about, while tool is working like a charm for me.

1:57 PM
Sometimes people just want a different solution

@OliverSalzburg then he need to mess up with registry no other way
and I don't suggest new people to make a mess with registry :D

@avirk The thing is... I'm pretty sure that's a dupe. I don't see anything WIndows 8 specific in there
