Look at those sideburns!
He is going Wolverine on us!
Hi @KronoS

Hey @david

Q: My question was deleted without explanation and i'm pissed

Run CMDNot closed, deleted. Just like that. I thought it was a valid question, which had already 5+ comments. So I just tried to delete ALL OF MY QUESTIONS + ANSWERS. Unfortunately someone undeleted my questions so I will have to find another way. I can't believe the arrogance of some uberuser moderat...

woehoe, @Diago and me tag-teamed this guy into a rage :P

oh dear :/

well, yeah.

he was deleting his questions
and it got flagged by Daniel Beck
I simply suspended him so he couldn't keep deleting them

1:16 PM
Anyone who feels that being a mod is cool and glorious should just sit and think about situations like this....

oh, but we're all a bunch of sadists, especially @Diago and @random :P

hey gusy
guys*

hello @sterz
you can edit your previous post if you press up ;) -- and I can undo my edit again and again and again :)

do you know what wireless router signal strength is measured in?
i mean what unit? dB?

decibel I reckon

1:20 PM
Isn't it hertz?

i guess it is dB

no that's the frequency of the signal

first time i will buy a wireless router

In telecommunications, received signal strength indicator (RSSI) is a measurement of the power present in a received radio signal. RSSI is generic radio receiver technology metric, which is usually invisible to the user of the device containing the receiver, but is directly known to users of wireless networking of IEEE 802.11 protocol family. RSSI is often done in the intermediate frequency (IF) stage before the IF amplifier. In zero-IF systems, it is done in the baseband signal chain, before the baseband amplifier. RSSI output is often a DC analog level. It can also be sampled by an int...

@ivoflipse it just surprises me sometimes how much people are attached to their "digital" property... You mess with it or say it's crap and they go all postal on you and think you're the spawn of satan

1:22 PM
@sterz there are more things to consider

most vendors dont specıfy theır sıgnal strength

and sadly, I don't think you'll ever get to test them in a reliable way

maybe so, but do you guys can at least suggest me any relıable brands?
ı hear people complaınıng about zyxel

never heard of it
what's your budget?
I would say the most important thing is that it should support dd-wrt (the open source firmware) or Tomato

Didn't Jeff do a blog post on this (router)...?

1:25 PM
yup he did

around 45-50 €

might be a bit tight depending on what you want

You might look at that @sterz

1:30 PM
@IvoFlipse ı just want a wıreless router that can encompass 150m2 home

nothıng specıal

@IvoFlipse: I know that my pictures aren't the best quality. I don't have a fancy camera right now to take better pictures with. And, it's my website, and I'll post whatever I want on it.

hehe, I know @MarkSzymanski, you just drowned my feed with 10 blurry pics that's all

1:32 PM
nıce one, hope they have ıt ın turkey

order a linksys one from amazon.de within Europe it shouldn't be so bad, the shipping cost
oh they have buffalo's too

I have that exact linksys model and it does great

We have one of those at my work (a data center) that we have as an insecure WLAN for client use. We have to get on a ladder all the time and restart it...
If client come on site and need internet access, they use that.
Employees use a Cisco wireless router

Hey @ivoflipse on that ram question I believe that I either flagged or voted to close or both... You mind checking for me?

can't there's no info like that on a question

1:41 PM
@KronoS: beloved?

you can't see it @David, it has been deleted

Stupid auto correct

o lol...
reminds me of a hilarious iPhone auto correct that a co-employee had a few months ago. You tried to text "alrighty then" and it spelled "altitude thin"
:D

LOL!

1:46 PM
document I created in Word 2010 looks crappy in OO.o and even crappier in GDocs & Zoho. ugh
catchya'll from home
//later

later @Sathya
everyone keep an eye out for Run CMD, if he wrecks havoc again, I'm slapping him for real

isn't he suspended?

@Diago, I've unsuspended him, just to see if he can behave himself

ah, ok

I am guessing @IvoFlipse went all soft again

1:55 PM
that way I can ban him permanently if he fails to do so

Oh man

I would leave the suspension in place just for the attitude.

I'm hoping he takes the bait tbh, it would just prove our point :P

We seriously need one more hard kill mod to balance out all the softies :P

he I've been deleting a lot of stuff the past week @Diago
though it's all old crap, true

1:57 PM
I'm pretty sure I flagged or voted on that question anyways @Diago so I agree with your decission

Super User is not a site where moderators have time to be nice. It's becoming as difficult as Stack Overflow to manage
@KronoS Honestly. It's hardly ever a decision. I see the flag, I hit the delete post button. I go on to something else.

Hopefully with the three more mods things will be a bit more manageable
:)

Yeah. There is still the integration period and the initial, OMG I have power moments to deal with :|
As much as I like having more mods, the learning curve is steep.

well most of the highest voted nominees hang out of chat a lot, so at least they can ask for feedback
we couldn't way back :(

I imagine... But with the candidates that are running with higher votes I think they'll be on top of it all

2:00 PM
@IvoFlipse Looking at the Pro Temp's on other SE sites I am not so sure about that. They seem to ignore the fact that some of us have experience doing this, and at least 1 out of every 3 knows how to do things better.

how do you mean @Diago, if it helps?

@IvoFlipse Updated my reply :P

yup, but I didn't downvote some of them for no reason ;)
I have confidence in at least the top 5 having sufficient experience with how we deal with things
or rather, that I have enough experience with how they deal with things

Well sathya is definitely already doin a good job andd the other 3 or 4 that are there I really don't have any proba with

I am glad to see the system works thought. I for a moment though we were going to have some real chancers becoming mods.

2:04 PM
but @Diago is right, we don't know how any of them will handle such situations, because there's no training ground other than the real thing

You mean Joe? Ya

What do you guys think about that weird nominee named David?

no, I don't think he's aiming for Joe here :P

@IvoFlipse We reverse the mistakes. Simple really. The one thing I wish moderators would learn, is even if you don't agree with each other, never ever take another mod on openly. Support their decisions and discuss it in private afterwards.
@IvoFlipse Lolz. That was a blast from the past. He was the second user I ever suspended.

@Diago @IvoFlipse I think that Sathya has handled himself pretty well with similar situations... so has nhinkle

2:05 PM
That is great advice @Diago

The nominees know who I support, I didn't hide that fact. I feel strongly about current moderators endorsing potential candidates.

it's kinda like parenting :P

If the current top three became mods I would be very satisfied with the outcome

Yeah @KronoS SLAP that child across the face if they do something wrong, they will be scared to do it later :D

@David That's how @random and I moderate, and so did the original Super User moderators, who are now gone :(
I learnt from TheTXI and from splatne.

2:09 PM
@David to be honest and blunt with you, IMO you are an amzing Super User just need a little more experience with mod like tools (i.e. votes to close)

Also, once your a mod your answer rate drops, so often we lose good answers due to moderator duties
The balance needs to be right as @random pointed out.

@Diago to be honest a little more toughness from mods would be nice, I don't think that I'd be a tough mod like that though...
maybe that's why I won't make it :P..... at least not this year

perhaps I'll get some more question asking done with the new mods in

Thanks @KronoS! That truly means a lot to me.

@David no thanks needed... just the truth... and that's all I aim to speak

2:11 PM
Reminds me of french toast and waffles...

@KronoS Preliminaries aren't an indication of the final votes. I was quite surprised how much votes I got when I got elected, and I was up against Ivo and Troggy. Also often the nominees who aren't selected now, automatically become moderators when the need arrises, so 4th or 5th place is also good.

silence
I'm not even 4th or 5th :'(
EPIC FAIL

@David you're #1 in my book :)

:)

you had my vote back then @Diago :)

2:15 PM
@IvoFlipse Yep, and most of you regret it now.

I never regretted having you as a mod

I buckled as well. Especially since at one stage I was the only active moderator.

What happens if there is no active moderator???

New one's are chosen

o, ok

2:17 PM
Pretty quickly. @JeffAtwood made a commitment at the time to make sure it will never happen again
Which is why we added so many mods without elections

But if there are no active moderators, who would do that? @JeffAtwood?

@Diago i didn't know that
wow... that's tough...

@David Yeah, all the employees are moderators anyway. He actually does actively moderate all the sites at some point or another
Hmmmm.... I wonder if I should post some screenshots of Stack Central.

o... cool!

I made a room for that @Diago

2:19 PM
that's be cool@Diago

@IvoFlipse You don't even know what it is :)

oh wait your app, I thought you meant the moderator pages ;P

Hmmmm... @Marc / @balpha We should really onebox bitbucket

@Diago is this in full use yet?

@KronoS Not even remotely, well the register user screen is almost finished

2:22 PM
or even beta?

I only started working on it last weekend.
I am hoping to Beta in the next 6 to 8 weeks :P
Or Alpha at least.

oh wow... well if you want someone to test I'm down @Diago

Will let everyone know. I am going to be doing a closed Alpha initially to sort out the bugs and then take it from there.

cool, just send me an email (posted on user page) or drop an "@" and I'll respond whenever you're ready to test

The user registration screen
Just to prove there is one
That screenshot was taken on my Mac FYI :)
On that note..... See you all much later....

2:30 PM
well it's time for school see y'all in an hour

btw everyone with less than 3k rep: you can now propose edits

2k? 3k is closing..

ah, it's so long ago I can't remember ;P

lol

@IvoFlipse Nice.

3:05 PM
@IvoFlipse twitter and tweetdeck questions are on-topic for webapps right?

yeah, but as long as its not the Adobe Air app

ok ya... iI just checked the FAQ as well...

@KronoS, no you can't remove a vote to close
but it will 'die out' in 4 days

ok... also I can't delete the post from "vote to close" o_0
I can delete all my other conversational pieces but not the link

hello @DanielBeck

3:15 PM
don't worry @KronoS

Hello all

hi @DanielBeck, good to see you in chat again :)

again ? I missed @DanielBeck first time then

I think I've seen him before

I never stayed here for more than a few seconds before

3:16 PM
can't find his posts though, so guess I'm wrong :)
well thanks for flagging that guy earlier :)

@Kyle Thank you, Captain Obvious. :-P

@IvoFlipse Run CMD?
The one that deleted his questions, or tried to?
I'm flagging so much I lost track :-)

yup that's the one

@DanielBeck good catch...

I'm wondering what the issue is though. Trying to delete one's own questions could have a legitimate reason -- not something warranting a 7 day penalty..?

3:21 PM
@DanielBeck hetried to delete all his posts iirc

they had upvoted content @DanielBeck, users shouldn't go vandalize when they disagree

Impressive. -10 on Meta in 4 hours.

@Iszi Did I do something wrong?

@Kyle Not really... just referring to your answer on my Outlook 2007 post. Kind of the obvious "probably first think he would've found on Google/TechNet and already tried" thing. Still a valid answer, though.

You said it was your Dad so I assumed we should start with the most obvious cause of this issue. You didn't mention if he tried that or not..
My bad if he is more computer literate than I assumed I didn't mean to rub you the wrong way. My dad wouldn't have even attempted to check online first.

3:28 PM
@Kyle His e-mail said he'd already been on Microsoft's website, and my comments indicated it was safe to presume he'd meant TechNet and such. He's fairly competent.
@Kyle No offense taken. Just poking fun at you is all, really.

LOL NP, I can take it :)

Dad was the one who raised me into computers, starting with a Commodore VIC-20, then C-64 and C-128. The first computer I could call my own was a 486 I'd put together from spare parts he'd accumulated in the garage.

@Iszi Must be nice to share your love of tech with your dad.

@Kyle It is, on the occasions that we do get together. Doesn't happen much these days, though there's no particular reason behind it.

4:06 PM
just spotted that @Josh is going to be present for the TownHall CHat
is scared

Josh? @Sathya

5:19 PM
I'm giving up on working for now

@IvoFlipse What? We're supposed to work on Fridays?

should, yes, actually doing it, no :P

@JeffAtwood I presume only users with edit privileges or above can actually implement suggested edits?

yes, but currently only mods can find new edits
go ahead and edit something (decent mind you!) and I'll link it
see if a lower rep user can approve it too

@IvoFlipse I think the mod comment was to state that there's a mod tool for it - users with edit privileges still see suggestions where they are, right?

5:29 PM
something like that @Iszi
but I think you currently don't even see it on a question
the UI might not been chanced yet

a low-rep user should correct the caps and formatting in this post: a

Q: i want to know that can i connect my old (pentium 3) to my new 32inch sony bravia Tv?

Just i want know that can i connect my Pentium 3 desktop to my sony bravia lcd tv config:- 1.2Ghz 256ram intel 810E motherboard is it possible? or may it damage my Tv??...

and then we can test the new edit system.

@studiohack Funny. That was the one I picked, too.
Done.
Essentially re-wrote that whole post, and threw in a tag as well.

okay bringing up a screenshot

Hey I can approve or reject the edit!
That's pretty cool

yeah! just did it!
pretty neat!

5:38 PM
Seems like low-rep users don't see edit counts. But, if you're a user that made an edit, you see the post as you edited it instead of as it was written. And, you have a notice saying "Thanks for your edit! This edit will only be visible to you until it is peer reviewed."
2
Now, here's a question. Do/should accepted edits give you rep?

yeah. so weird to see a low rep user having modified that post.
no, they do not @Iszi

@studiohack Good idea/bad idea?

there's been discussion about it on MSO, but...

actually I think they were planning on giving a certain amount of max rep
that you could gain 1k rep through editing

Q: Rep for editing?

RosinanteThe recent 'frank exchange of views' about downvotes suggests another line of investigation to me. I would presume to attribute some goals to Jeff: Users who put real effort into the site should earn rep and achieve moderation status. Users who game the system should not achieve moderation sta...

5:42 PM
I was just thinking that giving rep for accepted edits could help low-rep users climb through the system more quickly. The problem becomes how to regulate such rep gain, though. Perhaps establish a max per-diem of "edit rep" based on number of edited posts, and limit edit rep gain to once per post?

@IvoFlipse: does that include rep for higher-rep users editing?

I wouldn't know @studiohack

@studiohack Think that's weird? How about this? I just got the "Organizer" badge!

organizer is for tagging @Iszi

it's open to arbitrary edits though @Iszi, off course they have to be approved, but still users might start making useless edits for the sake of the rep

5:45 PM
@studiohack Organizer is for re-tags. And re-tagging requires 500 rep. I've got 483.

yeah...and then it is up to us, @IvoFlipse, to approve or reject - they can't get the rep until we approve it

yeah but you would get edits that 'look' good, but don't add anything

@IvoFlipse That's why I was suggesting a max posts-per-day limit of "edit rep" gain, and also only one "edit rep" bonus per post, per user (regardless of how many times you edit it).

now you have 518. so now you can retag independently,

@studiohack Wait... huh?

5:47 PM
I thought I read they planned on a max of 1k rep for editing stuff

That was a quick boost.

probably because after that you've pretty much should have the privilege of editing

perhaps, to improve accountability, we should, in side the edit's say that this edit was approved by user xyz...like in the edit summary or something
@Iszi, yeah some guy upvoted you. not sure who?

@studiohack Yeah... looks like I've had a lot of up-votes in the past couple minutes.

i clicked on your username here in chat and it said that you had 483 rep, and then a few minutes later, you had 518?
anyways, I'm over and out for a spell @alleverybody

5:52 PM
@studiohack Looking at my history, it seems someone up-voted 5 or so of my posts in the last few minutes. Strange, but I won't complain.

blame me @Iszi :P

hahahahahaha @IvoFlipse! lol
@Iszi, you're disapointed? that's sad. maybe I should retract my votes? ;)

How much rep is needed to approve edits? 2k?

@studiohack Didn't say I was disappointed at all. Just that it's a bit of an oddity compared to normal activity.
@DanielBeck Probably however much is required to independently do edits. I think 2k is right.

I always upvote a new user a couple of times on his good posts, to boost him up a bit :)

5:55 PM
@IvoFlipse :-) Thanks.

@Iszi /privileges says 2000, that's why I guessed that.

It actually did me some good, too. Got me to revisit some of my older posts and realized there were some comments I hadn't responded to.

Finally my first "Nice Answer" that maybe even deserves it. If that recent upvote spree is from someone in here, thanks a lot.

yeah, you can all repay me by upvoting me, off course ;)

@IvoFlipse 13k rep, and a diamond mod? You don't need no stinkin' upvotes! ;-P

6:08 PM
actually the diamond part is something that 'costs' you rep, in that you don't get to be as productive as others

@Iszi he needs upvotes until he reaches John T

@IvoFlipse You do - you just have to work harder at it.

@IvoFlipse Looking through your answers... Unfortunately, I cannot verify most of them right now to have a reason to upvote.
I guess that's why answers such as the accepted one for question 238765 get the "Nice Answer" badge -- very easy to see it's true..

@DanielBeck Agreed

@Iszi you've got some good questions/answers...
looking forward to your future participation
unfortunately @DanielBeck I know really limited thing about OSX and mac's and can't be a good judge on your questions/answers

6:22 PM
indeed @DanielBeck, but the scope of the site has swayed to somewhat more hardcore questions, which don't really attract my attention

@KronoS Thanks. I've mostly been hanging out on the RPG and IT Security betas, but I've tried to make it over here to SU & SF more often lately.

@studiohack How exactly does edit reviewing work? I haven't seen it yet...

@KronoS Thanks anyway.

@TomWij basically a lower rep edits the post.... then a higher rep has to approve... only mods can view active proposed edits....

But where do you see those suggestions?
When you visit the question, or is there a list?

6:26 PM
when you visit the question@TomWij
but there is no list for us.

@KronoS To be clear, only mods can view a list of active proposed suggestions. 2k rep users should still be able to see the proposals on the posts themselves.

Ah, and the list is only for moderatiors, I see.

Oh, really? It's only mods?

@TomWij: if you scroll up, you'll see a screenshot

@studiohack: And it's a number behind the edit link, right?

6:28 PM
50 mins ago, by studiohack
user image

@Iszi that's correct

@TomWij:yes, you'll see an Edit (1)

@KronoS I thought 2k users could see and approve edits on the posts - they just didn't have access to an actual tool?

Shouldn't this list be part of /review ?

@Iszi they can accept the change but not the actual "tool" as in a list of proposed edits.... that I know of yet

6:29 PM
@Iszi: they can see the edit on the actual question - but there is no big list of pending edits for us to see, unless we're a moderator

@DanielBeck that would be great... but I don't think it is yet

@KronoS, @DanielBeck, agreed.

Is it part of the tools you get at 10k rep?

@studiohack Right, that's what I was saying. Thought KronoS was contradicting.

good question @TomWij. we don't know at this point - maybe ask @Sathya

6:30 PM
@TomWij I don't know... we'll have to ask @Wil or @Sathya

@Iszi,good we clarified. :)

@Iszi sorry for confusion

@DanielBeck Holy crap, there's a /review ?
Why aren't these things easier to stumble upon?

@Iszi they are hidden for a reason...
You really can't do much with that site at the moment...

@Iszi: Because users couldn't edit until now.
I thought they were planning to add a Review button on the front page...
And that this would be a logical step towards it, but I might be wrong.
/review hasn't been perfectionized either imo...

6:34 PM
@Iszi There was a time where you couldn't reach /privileges via your reputation count -- imagine that.

see vote to close room @TomWij, @DanielBeck, @KronoS

@TomWij I might be wrong... IMO though i think it should be hidden unless a user can use it

@KronoS Not here, but over on RPG I can.

Done @studiohack

@KronoS: Maybe, would be more logical to make it appear once the user could use it, but if they allow to propose edits... Everyone could I think.

6:36 PM
@DanielBeck Yeah, I made a post on RPG meta about those types of pages. Jeff commented on it, but didn't give any real answers.

Q: Where are all the "special purpose" pages for the parent site?

IsziThis should be a CW. I'm looking for a list of all the "special purpose" pages that may not have links, or may not have obvious links from the main site. This could also include some that are "right in front of us where we can't see them" as the saying goes. Information for each page should in...

/review would have been perfect for that question, if anyone ever actually started a list.

hey all

hey @DMA57361

Well, /privileges is a bad example, as it is quite discoverable.

@DMA57361 Howdy

Hi @DMA57361

6:39 PM
Hi @DMA57361

@Iszi /review, /reputation and /posts/{id}/timeline jump straight to mind

btw if I'm dead tomorrow, it's because of the mammoth meat I'm eating

@IvoFlipse:nice.
@DMA57361: what is the /posts/{id}/timeline thing?
I got a big error when i tried to go there?

-9
A: Edit approval privilege (lack of) for 2K+ users doesn't make sense

Jeff AtwoodThis is because we will begin granting rep to users who suggest edits. If it did not require 2 users to approve an edit you could create infinite sock puppets and boost them all up to 1k rep by making scores of edits and single click accepting them.

that's the source of my claim about rep for edits @Iszi

@IvoFlipse is this the real reason why we need more mods... them resorting to suicide by mammoth?

6:44 PM
well it's from the freezer, but about as old as an mammoth :P

@DMA57361 Never heard of the last two there, either. How am I supposed to read /review? I imagine /posts/{id}/timeline is a timeline of a single user's posts?

@IvoFlipse: I argue that it is not 'fair' for suggested edits to get rep...

@studiohack it shows a timeline of when things happened (I think for questions only)
@Iszi not a user, a question ID (possibly answers, but I think not)

ah okay @DMA57361: make sense

you suggest an edit by editing, but you need approval that's all

6:45 PM
@IvoFlipse apparently nobody likes the rep for edits... -10 for a jeff post wow

@IvoFlipse Only in Meta can you have a -10 answer accepted, while there's a +9 one available.

only 10 votes out of how many users who read it?
most don't care enough about those questions to even vote

argh
I need 1K on meta.SO so I can get vote counts

+1 - 11
+2 now :P

@IvoFlipse: Oh, they use Joe as an example.

6:49 PM
And how the heck is that question "too localized"? It seems like it's started a bit of a debacle for sure, but it's definitely something that should be discussed.

@DMA57361 I was thinking exactly the same thing
@Iszi "Too Localized" = "Jeff doesn't want to talk about it yet"

Regarding "too localized", are software troubleshooting questions from 2009 that haven't been followed up on "too localized" now, one and a half years later?

@KronoS /me steps away, veeery carefully

I think so yes @DanielBeck
and if they aren't good questions, I would even delete them
bad question + no good answers @DanielBeck

This one (also closed) also raises a very valid point. I really like that low-rep users can suggest edits now, but this is ridiculous.
10
Q: Why are users with edit privileges being blocked by users without edit privileges?

Mark ElliotSo it's great that our whole community is now able to provide edit suggestions, but the decision to limit one-click approval status to moderators is causing me some heartburn. Much to my surprise, today I encountered a nearly-good edit, one that I was about to make, and rather than be able to ...

6:52 PM
@DanielBeck paste any "Crap" quesions like that here:

Q: Old unanswered inactive questions with low views/votes

studiohack@IvoFlipse was looking for a query to find old unanswered inactive questions with low views/votes. Because those kind of questions clutter the site and keep the unanswered question ratio high, it is a good idea to keep the site clean from questions like these.
