12:25 AM
what's with the dog @TomWij?

Which one?
Just cute, thought you might want to see them. :-)

they're yours?
brb
just got home :P

@IvoFlipse: no, they are not his dogs because the videos come from two different channels

12:41 AM
@IvoFlipse where you been?

I had a meeting with my previous employer @KronoS
had to drive to belgium for it (though I guess the distance is fairly small for USA standards)

how many KM or miles? @IvoFlipse

100 miles

lol... ya that is a short distance

but then I went to visit friends who live near @TomWij, so had to drive another 50
so the way back was a 2 hour drive

12:44 AM
100 each way?
300 miles roundtrip then

@IvoFlipse No, I'll send you a pic of our dog later.

which is 3-4 hours, depending how fast you drive

something like that yes @studiohack

have you guys met in person @TomWij, @IvoFlipse

nope, because @TomWij is always busy when I'm near ;P

12:46 AM
haha you guys should

Previous time I had exams, this time too, so... Third time, best time? :-)
Unless Ivo Flipse his next trip is around my exams in May-June...

had you heard I ordered the wrong CPU @TomWij?

@IvoFlipse: No, ouch, were you able to return the CPU?

well they hadn't send it out yet
but I couldn't pay from Belgium, so couldn't finish the upgraded order :(

that's no fun

12:54 AM
:(

yeah and the one I wanted turned out to be 30 euro's more expensive than 'normal'
because it's low on stock, they get to up the price :\
ah well, they should arrive on friday now, so I'll survive
@TomWij: I got this motherboard along with it: tweakers.net/reviews/1982/4/…
supposedly that's the one with 775 socket holes

looks nice

nice

which hopefully means it will be relatively painless to install my watercooling again
wonder if I need to get some more of that paste
btw how did your test go @TomWij?

1:13 AM
Fine, hopefully the test on friday goes well too.
Gonna go sleep, and meh... Learn more Linear Algebra proofs tomorrow. :-(

good luck, I should be off too

The moment after the test relieves that feeling a lot...
Good night. I hope I can get everything done tomorrow, have friday morning as spare time (as exam is in the afternoon).

good night @TomWij

1 hour later…
2:23 AM
@IvoFlipse that's not very exclusive... My EVGA p55 LE has combo holes for coolers

3:03 AM
Good evening, everyone.

3:17 AM
see vote to close @KronoS, anyone else with 3K

3:44 AM
10k+:

@Sathya has 2, that's right, 2 downvotes!

@Hello71: good job

well it used to say "hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiihhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiihhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiihhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii..."

weird
hello @Hello71

3:45 AM
hey @studiohack

Effing spammers.

@MarkSzymanski: that's not spam, just a weird answer :P

how is @MarkSzymanski & @Hello71?

How is that not spam? XD
I'm doing great, thanks ^^
You?

3:46 AM
I'm good myself

Also, I just realized Chat has a limit on message length.

which is?
experimenting. this is a test. please star this. thank you. repeat. experimenting. this is a test. please star this. thank you. repeat. experimenting. this is a test. please star this. thank you. repeat. experimenting. this is a test. please star this. thank you. repeat. experimenting. this is a test. please star this. thank you. repeat.
ah, it doesn't say... just says too long

"This message is too long".

yeah...

@studiohack: Just out of curiosity, do you have time limits for repeatedly sending messages in the chat?

3:48 AM
yes, I do

Like you have to wait a set amount of time before sending another message.

yup

Do you?
Ok.

I type so fast, I get that a lot

Yeah.
I was just curious to see if it went away with rep.

3:49 AM
found it:
else if(c.length>500&&!t)p="This message is too long";
in master-chat.js

@studiohack yey! I had one yesterday! :P

you mean one?
@Sathya
and hello @Sathya!

oops, yeah!Good evening @studiohack

I had none until about 23+ and then boom. -1, and then -2 more overnight...

3:59 AM
you're doing pretty well though
I expected @nhinkle to fetch more :/

That's exactly my thought...he has one of the best written nominations...

anyhow, will fade away now, getting ready for work, laters @studiohack

cya @Sathya

looking at HP service guide, seems like I have a spare bay for a SSD. Need to disassemble and see for sure
@SuperKronos e-mail your name and address and if you have a laptop or desktop to mobilecontest@kingston.com I will send it out this week.

@Sathya ya?

4:04 AM
nothing @KronoS :p

oh ok :)

I definitely have a spare bay if that helps ;P

I sent them the email this morn... I'm getting pretty excited

I got it in 2 days :O
It was Fedex'd

@Sathya what?! no way!

4:10 AM
.. and addressed to wrong company :/
yup @KronoS

that's so sick... I asked for three... two for a raid 0 and 1 for a regular install...
we'll see if I get all three

I'm off to bed, goodnight everyone.

night @MarkSzymanski

@Sathya, I was a bit surprised as well. Hopefully not too indicative of what'll happen in the actual election, but it does have me slightly disappointed.
how are you folks?
@KronoS, I think it's pretty great they're just sending you SSDs! And you get to keep them?

good doin homework @nhinkle
@nhinkle Ya I'm pretty happy about it

4:21 AM
@KronoS, same. I've been busy all day... had two tests, and all kinds of meetings this evening
If you decide after doing the testing for the blog that you have no use for all three... I can think of one or two things the extras could be put to use for :P

ask them for it @nhinkle
( yes I was shameless in asking :P )

@Sathya, suppose I could. You think they'd send them to anyone who promises to blog about it? My personal blog doesn't have much readership, and the SU blog is, well, already doing it :P

after testing I'll for sure share the wealth
Maybe I'll give it away for one of the featured questions or something of the like
@nhinkle you use matlab at all?

That would be a nice thing to do. Rewarding the community is always a great way to contribute

Dec 9 '10 at 17:33, by Sathya
you know how / why they sent me ?

4:25 AM
@KronoS oh do I ever use matlab

Dec 9 '10 at 17:33, by Sathya
So @KingstonSSDNow is following me. Do I get a review copy or something ?

the class i'm "learning" matlab in is possibly the most boring thing ever

My blog doesn't get too many visits either @nhinkle

when writing a m file... how do I output a matrix of answers?

by "output" do you just mean show on the display?

4:27 AM
no clippy I don't need your help this time... i.e. an iteration of 5 times...
no actually saved as an A x B matrix

@Sathya did you just ask Kingston for some and they're sending them to you? I know @KronoS asked them for some for the SU blog

heading to work, later folks

ohh. we haven't gotten to the point of returning a result from a .m. I could check in my textbook though if i went and looked though
see ya @Sathya

k I'll keep googlin @nhinkle

this class is excruciatingly slow, so i have yet to really do anything interesting
@KronoS, how does the SU blog work per se? Do you have a meta post about it or something? And is there any possibility for getting it to be official like the server fault blog?

Q: Top Question of the Week #3

Ivo FlipseNow we're into week 3 of the "Top Question" of Super User in the Super User blog. Please post and vote for your favorite question for this week. Please post any question that you feel is of worth and the reason why. Try not to promote your own questions or answers for publicity sake. We are lo...

@nhinkle kinda... we just started posting... I'm really trying to push for attention like the server fault one... but we're not there yet

Who owns blogoverflow.com?
Because the SF blog is blog.serverfault.com
and it would be nice to have blog.superuser.com

Maybe with this KingstonSSD review we'll get more attention from users and also maybe jeff

Have you proposed it to him directly?

Ya that's what I'm pushing for...
I think we need a little more content...

I'd post on meta.su and suggest it
i'll vote it up :D

4:34 AM
I think a post on MSO might be a better choice...
we'll see here soon though

^^ a friend of mine found this in his CS book
evidently the book uses that icon to show blunders and horrific code you should avoid

Whoa... That's cool

we're wondering if that's where jeff got his avatar

probably

so, I'd like your guys' opinion on something
do you think it's appropriate to quote in my nomination text a few of the positive/supportive comments people have made regarding my nomination? part of me feels like it's fair to show why people like me, on the other hand, part of me wonders if it's appropriate though. for what it's worth, i would be more than willing to support candidates whose nominations i said good things about putting that in there. but i'm just not entirely sure if that's appropriate or not
@KronoS, @studiohack, @Sathya, @ivoflipse ?

Q: How do I output multiple calculations with an m file as matrices?

KronoSI'm writing an m file where and iteration of answers are calculated. I want to save each of these iterations in a matrix. How do I go about doing this? j = 0; for j < n; %n is a user input futurevalue = P*(1+i)^j; % each of these calculation I want to save j++; end

@nhinkle I would ask for permission first...

@KronoS, yes. I'm not even sure yet if I want to put that in there, but am pondering it

To be honest... your sitting pretty well...

I suppose. I'm surprised you got so many downvotes, @KronoS. I don't see any reason to vote yours down.

Probably just think I'm not ready...
that and once one vote starts to lead one way I feel the crowd follows...

Could be perception of less readiness I suppose. You could definitely still get elected though. And even if you don't, by next year you'll have enough experience and an epic enough record that you'd probably be a high pick
I do think you have a point about the momentum of the vote
looks like joe still has no upvotes

5:00 AM
ya but I feel like he deserves that...

Indeed

@nhinkle if you ask me, I think it'sbetter to leave that out, and mention some numbers on badges / edits / votes et al

5:15 AM
@Sathya do you know anything about matlab?

5:36 AM
@KronoS sorry nothing about it. last used it ~ 4 years ago!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

@Sathya, suppose I agree
@KronoS, what sort of problem are you having with it? I can check my book for info

BAM! just got it...

:D

@nhinkle I was having issue with number formating

5:51 AM
what did you have to do?

well first off the numbering was coming out all funky... 1 ==> 1.0e+5*0.0000
o_0
but since I'm dealing with monetary figures I was able to change the format to "banking"
: format bank
@nhinkle

huh. interesting. i've never seen that format before
what're you using matlab for?

This is for my numerical methods class.... but I'm also going to be using it for System dynamics, embedded computer systems and probably statistics

Wow. Sounds like your school is big on matlab
Did you have to purchase a license or do they provide it to you for free?

Ya we have a compus wide license... I can use it on my personal pc or laptop for free....
It's pretty cool

6:00 AM
@KronoS ah, that's great

Ya it's amazing... we get quite a bit with it too.... simulink, aerospace and biology packages... in fact we had a rep come through and said that our school has the best that you can take home...

That's cool. The college of engineering here has a certain number of shared licenses. The application is wrapped in this scary thing by VMware which checks the licensing server for how many licenses are currently in use, then loads a semi-virtualized copy locally, but it interacts with everything just as if it were installed normally

6:54 AM
And... done with homework... time for bed... only to get up in about 5 hours... :( night...

7:04 AM
'night @KronoS

2 hours later…
8:38 AM
@KronoS, just put something like round(1.0e+5*0000) and it will round it off to 1 for you
@nhinkle blogoverflow is owned by one/some of the guys from WordPress.Stackexchange to allow the community to blog about their site
we can add you as an editor, then you can edit posts or write your own :)
@KronoS the next test would be to test some GPUs ;)

@IvoFlipse, that would be great

morning @IvoFlipse

I'm about to head to bed. Just went on a closing spree... seems like there were more off-topic questions than usual tonight. Found a question that I ended up writing a pretty detailed answer on though, which was nice. Haven't been enough opportunities for answering lately

heads over to 10k tools to find the closed questions

@Sathya, i posted a few in the vote to close room, too
Man, if I don't end up being voted for mod, I'm going to have to work my butt off getting to 10K so I can at least have access to that stuff :P

8:48 AM
you'll probably hate the you-can-view-deleted-posts-too thingy though

-shrug-
guess i'll find out, someday :P
anyhow, i'm off to bed now. 'night all!

@nhinkle night!

9:24 AM
morning all

9:36 AM
morning @DMA57361

4 hours later…
1:58 PM
blimey... a quiet day in here today...

yup...
Hi @DMA57361

I've been trying to work for a change @DMA57361 ;P

hi @David
@IvoFlipse ..work?! madness!

I have been reading the Network+ book on Safari...

oh, how'd you're presentation go?

2:01 PM
great! :D
there will surely be a follow up

excellent news

the only downside is that I don't have an written contract that says when it will start and how much I will get for it
so I'm writing my report asap, so I can wrap up the project this month, even though it was planned to be finished next month
but then I can speed things up to make sure we can get going again :)

fair enough

and I visited a friend, who's a manager in my previous employer's other companies (a specialized running shoe store)
he's a firm believer in natural running, so he wants to do a project to research the benefits of shoes like the Nike Free or rather show how it can be beneficial compared to regular running shoes

No one to give me company :(
@IvoFlipse great to hear that

2:09 PM
but unless I see a check coming my way, I can't really cheer to early :P
well it would be nice to actually earn something for a chance :P

:)

especially after spending 500euro on my computer again :P

heh

and I still need to buy Office, because OpenOffice messed up my presentation yesterday :@

I'm sure that investment is worth it

2:12 PM
@nhinkle yeah, check codinghorror.com/blog/2004/02/about-me.html and scroll down about halfway

oh it's going to last me some time yeah

time to head for home
bbs

gah, sorry, I moan it's quiet in here and then get dragged away from my desk suddenly..

all the figures dropped out of the presentation

do'h
relative / absolute file path confusion maybe?

2:14 PM
no idea, Powerpoint just stores images IN the presentation

I see. I've never really had to use either

well stay away from it ;P

heh, when I was in school I managed to create a 800MB powerpoint with all the pictures from my leavers dinner...the sysadmin wasn't impressed.#
I didn't think the powerpoint would store the images inside but in the end I'm glad it did.

nice
(or not, depending on which way you look at it really)

not storing the pics in the presentation is like making a presentation from a html file or something :S
awkward :S
if it doesn't keep a local copy of the image, what would be the use to put the presentation in dropbox :\

2:31 PM
indeed...this was 2005 so I'm pretty sure dropbox wasn't around.
I had to get clearance from the admin to make it anyway as our work areas were limited to 40mb...and then it was too big to put on a CD and we didn't have any DVD burners :/

ouch @tombull89

@Sathya how did you google search how many questions you closed/edit

"closed as" "by Kronos" site:superuser.com

well @IvoFlipse beat me to it :)

surely that'll pick up ones you've answered, edited or commented on that happen to be closed, even if you weren't someone who voted to close?

2:46 PM
148... that's better

@DMA57361 that's the caveat

oh time for class... I'll be back though...
pulls out his iPod :)

probably will @DMA57361, so I guess he has to do it for all the close reasons

@IvoFlipse "do it for all the close reasons" - sorry, not sure what you mean?

"closed as off-topic by Kronos"
oh crap, that wouldn't work either, he's not always the first

2:53 PM
indeed
but that's probably an interesting stat as well :)

ugh, my WiFi keeps getting auto-disabled :-s
any idea why ?

not disabled
it's going to sleep
oh wait, what device @Sathya?

but I do have active connections :-s

hehe, actually it is

my Envy @IvoFlipse

2:54 PM
I thought about your Nexus S ;P

ah
that's set to no sleep :P
maybe do the same fr this

44 questions for off-topic on my conto :D
23 narq
5 subjective and argumentative
44 dupes
actually adding the close reason doesn't seem really necessary @DMA57361

I wonder if the API reveals this information?

oh ?

2:58 PM
no, data.SE !== API

oh right ;P

45, 35, 8, 4, 1 : total 93
based on the data.SE query
doesn't look like it, I can only see closed date and reason on the API spec... :(

see... Data.se show 43... while google 148

@DMA57361 which route ?

yeah, I'm looking at that but I seem to be missing something :/

it's the spec for the various types of API pages
for example this -> api.superuser.com/1.0/users/39366 <- is my info (save it somewhere and look at it in a text editor)

I got that @DMA57361 I'm not sure where to look at ( or rather which method) which returns closed date & reason - is it just /questions/id ?

yeah
http://api.superuser.com/1.0/help/method?method=questions/{id}
^^ that one
scroll down to the "Returns" section, and that's everything a call to that URL will return for you
"closed_date" and "closed_reason" are both in there

yep
but doesn't display the current votes cast

3:11 PM
votes = score, up_vote_count and down_vote_count

the question I referred to has atleast 1( by me) close vote @DMA57361

Q: gmail: sort by subject

ufkHello. is there a way to sort the e-mails in gmail by subject? i don't mind if using a greasemonkey script for that job but i did not find anything relevant. i also do not want to use any 3rd party email application to do. i want to be able to sort using the web interface. thanks!

no it doesn't...
oh wait
close votes
facepalm
yes, that's correct, there's no details of close votes in there

but it does have fields for when and why it was closed (which presumably only appear if a question is closed)
@Sathya OK...what am I looking at this time?

it's migrated now :)
passed a parameter ?answers=true

3:15 PM
yes

@Sathya what about edits... any goolge searching magic there?

my point was that we can't use the API to find out how many people have closed questions

yep, I agree with that @DMA57361
@KronoS I don't think so

well updated the nom profile with some specific stats... I'm not sure it's gonna help though lol... stats aren't really that good

3:53 PM
@KronoS: creative way to count your close votes! I like it

hmph

@Sathya ?

my wireless

ah

in the past half hour I've had to re-enable it manually 5 times

4:04 PM
ouch

life's hard sometimes... @Sathya

4:20 PM
1000 rep, yay :D

grats 'Kyle

thx

tho I voted to close the question on which you crossed 1k rep

That post was very difficult to read.
lots of spelling errors too

1 hour later…
5:50 PM
congrats @Kyle

6:15 PM
Hi there! :)

6:59 PM
lol I just earned the critic badge for voting at SO :)

nice :P

I wonder if tooth implants hurt(sigh...)?
I just jacked one of my teeth up during lunch.
stupid taco bell with Fritos.

@Sathya, @IvoFlipse, @KronoS: there's a data query for finding closed questions actually, it even breaks it down by close reason

lol... I'm sorry @David but that's funy
@nhinkle yes but the data is old..

I think I linked that in the blog room yes

7:11 PM
@KronoS, true, the data isn't very fresh

That's why i did the google search instead

Makes sense

I'm not 100% sure if that doesn't show questions twice or doesn't show others at all

A: Old unanswered inactive questions with low views/votes

Ivo FlipseCan anyone give me a good reason why to keep closed questions around after a certain grace period for appealing the closing? Every question that's off-topic, not a real question or argumentative/subjective becomes a dead end. Keeping them around to serve as an example for new users apparently ...

@IvoFlipse Are there any situation where a question is closed to prevent answering more? But the quality of the question is still good and a good answer has been found?

@KronoS in that case it gets locked

indeed
and I'm protecting questions more and more, to prevent 1 rep users to answer

questions can be "protected" to prevent answers from people with <10 rep, and can be "locked" to prevent all further answer

fair enough... then I can't think of any reason to keep them...

7:48 PM
perhaps it would be worth considering automatically protecting questions which have an accepted answer with at least n upvotes and are greater than m months old

@nhinkle I think that's a good idea, but there a vague line in drawing that... and who decides to draw that line?

put it up on Meta @nhinkle ;)
though I guess it would be rejected
because the answer could get outdated
but in that case, I think the whole question is invalidated
