12:00 AM
I agree, but I can't get it flush...is this a standard thing, @KronoS?

no it's not @studiohack

@KronoS what kind of slot is that?

what I meant is that is the card and the space standard, but I'm not putting it in right? @KronoS
@Kyle: it is my slot, but I'm not sure what kind of slot lol

Pci-e @Kyle

I have a green slot?
one of the longer ones

12:02 AM
@studiohack Yes the green one I can tell it's pcie but it's longer.

yes...Let me look up the exact card I have

the green is just a coloring scheme... probably means the threads are directly connected to CPU

@Kyle @studiohack the pci-e is longer becuase it's the pci3 x 16

okay

12:05 AM
@studiohack that's not the one you have....

Compare your pic to @studiohacks pic

If I read the sticker on the thing right, it is an Intel Pro/1000 PT

I believe that's the processing unit...
could be wrong though...
brb (about 15 to 20 min)

you're right, @KronoS it is actually a PT, the first link was an MT

@KronoS the green slots in the picture are pci x or pci 2.0 not pcie
look at them closely I new something looked wrong.
@studiohack it looks like you are trying to put a PCIE 1x card into a PCI X slot.
Google both and compare them to yours

12:12 AM
@Kyle: you're right, I think

I have been looking into this since you started posting I couldn't figure it out but something looked wrong.

I'm guessing it is impossible to use with this setup then>

I'm %99 percent sure now just keep looking at the pics. Also the first card you posted with the same model number was PCI X.
yes
Easy mistake to make, they had the same model.

okay...thanks for the help @Kyle!
will try something else, I'm glad I got this figured out...

No problem.
Good thing you didn't boot it :P

12:15 AM
which would have fried it?

I have no idea
I wouldn't want to find out.

I did try to boot earlier, but the machine never came on, because I think I had left something else unplugged when trying to work on the machine.
hopefully it didn't do anything lol

Probably not, better to be safe though, especially with a server.
Personal server?

Whoo!
@studiohack: Guess what? :D

it is an old dell poweredge - used. and the built -in ethernet died. @Kyle
@MarkSzymanski what happened?

12:18 AM
I didn't lose all my subscribers! :D

whoo!

Feedburner had some crazy bug or something :P

that's awesome @MarkSzymanski
XD

7 subscribers right now. But that's including me.

nice

12:22 AM
@MarkSzymanski subscribers? What?

@Iszi: My website. Yesterday, I had thought that I lost all my subscribers to my website's RSS feed.
Turns out I didn't.

@Kyle nice catch!

@KronoS Thanks

@MarkSzymanski don't feel bad I've only got one subscriber for mine:
and it's my wife...

@KronoS Haven't seen one of them in a long time.

12:24 AM
@KronoS: Well, I had subscribers, then lost all of them all of a sudden.
And, another great thing!

@MarkSzymanski OIC

lol... I think @MarkSzymanski might just pass out due to excitement

@KronoS: Guess what.

@Kyle seen what?

12:25 AM
You have 2 subscribers now ;)

A pci x slot.

oh... ya... it threw me off... I assumed that he was working on a newer server...
@Kyle you're making a lot of edits

I was upset with the first two I did, lol.

how so?

Just wanted to help out where I can.

12:28 AM
@KronoS He's been doing that to himself since this afternoon.

@KronoS: thanks for you help as well. it is just an older home server...

@Iszi doing what?

@studiohack I see..
@Kyle good job...

@Kyle Editing... particularly yourself.

@KronoS: when I had the card in, I did try booting, and it didn't turn on at all. now that the card is out, and everything back together, it does boot. what does that mean? Is the card fried? or not? I think I'll try to resell it

12:29 AM
@Iszi Just joking around, I found it amusing.

@studiohack means that there was probably a short... but everything should be alright

@Kyle Ah yes, you were.

okay, so it is probably still like new and works? @KronoS

@studiohack Just don't let out the magic blue smoke and you'll be fine. ;-)

@studiohack hopefully... just not on that server ;)

12:34 AM
@studiohack Well we now know what happens when you boot with a pcie card in a pci slot...

@KronoS: thanks for your help, appreciate it!
@Kyle: yes, now we do :P

@studiohack no prob man

12:51 AM
btw, if anyone wants the Intel Pro 1000/PT, I'd be happy to sell it.

lol

i know :P otherwise, it's ebay haha

lol

'course, real life is going from fixing the server to browning meat on the stove. :P

1:14 AM
Anyone know if the low-rep edits have been ported to beta sites yet?

@TomWij Yay! Thanks.

@Iszi: And went checking, Stack Overflow is at edit suggestion 902 ( stackoverflow.com/edit-suggestions/902 ) :O

@TomWij Wow. Busy place, that is.

Entering some random IDs, they seem to be handled actively by the moderators.
Or there is a list we don't know of... :D

1:49 AM
decides to quit being lazy and start on rewriting About...

2:26 AM
Dangit.
Does anyone know how to terminate IRC messages? Isn't it like \n and something else?
AH
\n\r

4 hours later…
6:27 AM
well, i've been gone all day long, so i'm a bit behind on everything that's happened in here
@DMA57361, I do know CSS, do you have a question about it?
congrats @Ivoflipse for going running :D
i love running, though I haven't gone since last week since I was sick and then the friend I usually run with was sick
been going for some lovely bike rides lately though
howdy @KronoS

hey @nhinkle just checking up on things before I get to bed...
how ya doin?

great! baking some cookies right now :D

nice...

2 hours later…
8:18 AM
@TomWij nope, list is visible only to diamonds

@nhinkle erm...no...why?

@DMA57361 you were asking me yesterday :P @nhinkle
damn @nhinkle beat me to it

:D

ah yeah

8:28 AM
ivo tagged me (that was still "today" for me, but yesterday for you)
I didn't get the notification until a few hours ago because I was busy all day

cos I was going to suggestion jQuery, as if you know CSS it makes it DOM stuff very easy

oh, ok
jqeury's cool, i've played around with it a bit

Done with first round, cleared but next round is not today :/
There was a Unix question (because I had mentioned in CV) - how will you search for chars in file. Me -> cat filename | grep blah

@Sathya, are you doing interviews for a new job or somesuch?

yep @nhinkle

8:30 AM
nice :)
where are you applying?

Jan 24 at 10:31, by Sathya
also approached by one of Oracle's Subsidiaries that's intriguing me too
btw @DMA57361 on

cool

20 hours ago, by Sathya
I have an interview tomorrow at Oracle, and I'm just wondering how it's going to be
had a written test first, then a tech 1-to-1 interview
both were easier than expected

are you referencing all your work at super user at all to show them how awesome you are?

@Sathya ah nice, how many other steps to go?

8:31 AM
nope @nhinkle they'll be like what's super user :/

yeah, i suppose so

@DMA57361 just the final one
probably next week

when i applied for my current job (helpdesk on campus) i mentioned it. one of the guys interviewing me had seen stackoverflow before so was sort of familiar with the concept, and thought it sounded cool

ah very nice
exposure of Stack Overflow is very less

@Sathya ah cool, good luck :)

8:33 AM
I have 1.2k rep on SO, most prolly it'll be looked upon as timepass :/

i have even less.... like 250ish

@DMA57361 thank you!

my 2nd highest rep is on webapps, and even then it's barely more than 1100
sure hope you get the job!

I have 250-ish on DBA Stack Exchange
oo it's at 300

Q: Bulk Insert into Oracle database: Which is better: FOR Cursor loop or a simple Select ?

SathyaWhich would be a better option for bulk insert into an Oracle database ? A FOR Cursor loop like DECLARE CURSOR C1 IS SELECT * FROM FOO; BEGIN FOR C1_REC IN C1 LOOP INSERT INTO BAR(A, B, C) VALUES(C1.A, C1.B, C1...

top news on one of my twitter follower's paper.li is Super User elections :D

Just 12 hours left 'til the election starts
:D

8:42 AM
And the reason it's been delayed is Joe's application.

yeah :/
oh well
that's how the democratic process works though
if you "are would like to nominated for moderator", that's your prerogative if you've got enough rep to enter yourself

@nhinkle I'm not sure I follow that sentence

Sure. Still don't like it. But at least he got a good downvote beating. I'm looking forward to his next profile text.

@Sathya, joe's nomination said "I am would like to nominated for moderator ."

ah yes

8:46 AM
And I'm saying that it's up to any user who meets the criteria the community establishes to enter themselves, whether or not they're actually a good candidate

@Sathya, I can't see that
i think it might be deleted
and i don't have 10k+

na, I'm trying to onebox it

@DanielBeck, the downvoting is (fortunately) also part of the democratic process here. :)
ah
looks like that doesn't work for nominations @Sathya
no edits on his nomination at all

@nhinkle yeah, unfortunately
> Netural decision for any dispute

8:48 AM
he hasn't even been on the site in 4 days....
not sure i want neutral decisions. i want good decisions

wonder if he's had a look at his votes :D

how could he? he hasn't been on the site, and you have to be logged in to see votes
we did "Give chance and let see ... it" like he asked though

I'm surprised that he didn't withdraw either

again, he can't withdraw if he never visits the site :/
i hope people actually take the time to read all the candidates' blurbs when the election happens. i've made quite a few revisions to mine since I first wrote it, as have many of the others
and editing makes for better writing

@nhinkle true
well the general tendency is to vote and then forget

8:55 AM
yeah. just like in real life... many people (well, in the US) just don't seem to care about politics and elections. if they vote at all, it's often not well-informed
i'm glad we're going to have the "town hall" chat
i think it'll be a good way to get people involved and show some of the stuff you can't fit into the nomination text reasonably

yep
it's going to be on Monday night for me

/me checks calendar....
looks like monday morning for me
at 7 am
good thing i don't have class 'til 10 on mondays

nice
good thing I moved away from Dreamhost
Dreamhost's 10 minutes of downtime have turned into a couple of hours. Hopefully up by morning. :-/

@Sathya, who's your current hosting provider?

x10 premium for sathyabh.at & ExperTrio for sathyasays.com @nhinkle
not that I get earth shattering hits :D

9:11 AM
what's the difference between your two site? and why don't you just host them both on the same server?
@Sathya

@nhinkle sathyabh.at is more like a personal diary
the latter was my Linux blog

lol, "was"

haven't got the time to keep it updated so drop in a link every now and then

about how many views do you get per month?

@nhinkle for sathyasays.com

9:15 AM
wow. that's a good deal more than my site :P
though I rarely ever blog, so that's not really surprising

@nhinkle for sathyabh.at
sathyabh.at used to be my ranting place before I found twitter

good morning everyone

hey @IvoFlipse
good very-late-evening to you :P

now let's pray the postal service doesn't fail to find my front door AGAIN
and off course hope they don't decide drop it off at my parents place and require ME to show an ID...

i can see that being troublesome
you going running again today?

9:23 AM
nope, but my front door is at the back of the building
up some silly staircase
and they usually don't go looking :\
had that last time too
instead of dropping it off in town here
they sent it back!

shipping companies are a pain
well, i think i'm going to bed
'twas a long day
though a pretty good one :)

sleep well :)

will do. 'night all; see you tomorrow for some voting!

ow
good night @nhinkle

A: What does Computer Hardware add that isn't already available on Super User?

Lazer If this proposal is mainly focusing on making the right choices for picking hardware... "Proposed Q&A site for system tweakers and builders: professionals and DIYers" What's the difference between triple channel and dual channel in RAMs? How much thermal grease should I apply ...

I feel like slapping some hardware dudes

9:38 AM
:))

I hate how they just never asked those questions because they didn't want to be next to the software guys

9:55 AM
Right. Because all hardware questions are tagged [hardware]

> Right, it doesn't mean they're not on-topic (where did I say that?), but it does suggest that we need a more focussed community, like CH maybe.

10:26 AM
@IvoFlipse No I meant Lazer's reply where he analyzes the number of hardware-related questions on SU. They aren't necessarily tagged [hardware], so it's more than just a bit flawed.

that as well

I'm almost exclusively working on [mac], [osx] and related questions (a very small part of SU), and I never felt any need to abandon SU for Ask Different
So I don't understand the hardware folks, even though I think I'm in a similar situation.

I feel Apple is somewhat flawed in its scope that it reaches from server to desktop to tablet to phone to mp3 player...
which is a miss-mess from SF, SU and gadgets

That too, but even if it weren't. I'm happy with my niche on SU and can't really understand the need others have for their "own community".

and that breaks compatibility somewhat, because Ubuntu for instance is focusing on the software side and SU also does hardware, but not all
well the only part I can agree with, is that it doesn't matter
they're all part of stackexchange
but I don't buy expensive hardware and watercooling for no reason :P
as you can see @ChrisF, I'm annoyed :P

10:33 AM
Indeed I can

Q: What is a normal/safe temperature for an i7 2600K cpu? Any tips for efficient cooling?

Arthur SkirvinI just completed my first build, and while I was finagling around in the bios I noticed, with some concern, that my CPU was sitting around 60°C. Even when I set the max temp to 55°C, it didn't seem capable of going below 58°. Judging by the various threads I've found (for example) this is a lit...

I'm actually looking up some other temperatures

There you go @IvoFlipse, looks like a good hardware question.

doesn't look too bad
hehe and I want to know, because I'm going to OC my 2500k

good timing

10:52 AM
"could someone spoon feed me how to do this?" what the hell?
If I'd only seen this before I posted my reply :-/

shove the spoon up his ...

@IvoFlipse: Are the tags [tag:hardware] and [tag:software] actully needed on our site?

not really, but I don't care much for tags anyway
though it does help to make a broad filtering, but then any question would need one of these two tags
but the scope is so broad, I can't go and fill in 100 tags for every topic I like though :\
woehoe, my first accepted answer in ages :P

11:11 AM
@IvoFlipse: Check my comment on the CH discussion I made to his answer.
Those tags aren't meta tags and are useful for the user if it is not clear if his question is about [hardware] or [software], bet we don't care ourselves to manage those tags.
As it simply doesn't matter if the tag is there or not.
The perfect situation is as you suggest, but it is indeed hard to reach.
That would even meen obliterating tags on questions with 5 tags.
[command-line] is even more popular than [software]

woehoe!
I got my package
now let's see what's in it

@IvoFlipse: Yeah! :D

shit, I should have backupped my C drive so I can do a fresh install
or could I do a windows repair on it :P

@IvoFlipse: Actually... If you controller changes you have a problem, if not, you might be able to just boot it.

no I have a new mobo too

11:23 AM
@IvoFlipse: My previous laptop was Intel, this one was too. The hardware different a lot, I just booted my old disk in this one and it works...
It's your controller that matters, as that is the only driver that isn't automatically detected.

I can try, but if it doesn't I can reinstall
only thing I'll miss now are my settings and such

But, your current is Intel based and your new one is too?
If you know it in advance you can change the registry or remove the controller drivers or even install the new ones before shutting down and still get it working.
It's very funny when you boot, you get a long list of new hardware detected. :D

backing up Starcraft 2 off course
naah I guess I'll really just reinstall everything
cleans up too

@IvoFlipse: Is that necesarry? Or just replays?

and I have most installers in my download folder
just a matter of click click click
no else I have to download it again

11:27 AM
Ah, the installers, yeah...

@TomWij [tag:software]? Really?

the updates and such

@DanielBeck: Yes, an operating system is software, check the first words.
An operating system (OS) is software, consisting of programs and data, that runs on computers and manages computer hardware resources and provides common services for efficient execution of various application software. For hardware functions such as input and output and memory allocation, the operating system acts as an intermediary between application programs and the computer hardware, although the application code is usually executed directly by the hardware, but will frequently call the OS or be interrupted by it. Operating systems are found on almost any device that contains a comp...

it's so small!

@TomWij No, your edits. You're spamming the front page.

11:30 AM
@DanielBeck: Well, that happens when you are a taxonomist. :-(

If we tagged everything this way, we'd need to raise the 5 tag limit...
If it's tagged [windows-7], it's most likely software-related. [osx] the same. [cpu] is hardware-related. There's no need to add these tags...

@DanielBeck: Then tag sets on the sites themselves might be useful.
@DanielBeck: [cpu] can be software, [windows-7] can be hardware.
Eg. CPUID; Eg. BSOD due to failing hardware

True. Tag hierarchies. But editing to add the "parent" tags won't help.
It's the same with [osx] and [osx-snow-leopard]. Tagging both doesn't make sense (although I admit to certain edits that resulted in this).

@DanielBeck: Then use either, but tagging with both [hardware] and [osx] does make sense.

@TomWij True. But you added [software] to [osx] [bash] [script]. That's why I asked.

11:38 AM
Pretty soon you'll be adding [SuperUser] tags
:)

@Knox: So, in that trend [software] and [hardware] would be meta tags?

i think so

well I'm going to tear my computer apart
pray that I don't spill water over it...

good luck

@Knox: Creating up a meta question for discussion.

11:50 AM
@TomWij when thinking of adding any tag to a question ask yourself - would the question make sense with only this tag. [software] and [hardware] are really meta tags and aren't needed. Other tags such as [python], [word], [cpu] and [memory] are just fine.

Q: Can the hardware and software tags be obliterated?

TomWijDo we really need the hardware and software tags? Looking at the tag into detail: They don't group all the questions that should belong to them. Their statistics don't make sense, they are both less popular than command-line. They have no additional value when searching, as you would look for ...

so now for the scary part! disconnecting the watercooling :O

@IvoFlipse: Uhm...
I guess not on a running computer? :D
And I would suggest disconnecting it at the pump.

12:07 PM
no I was 'wrong' I don't have to disconnect the water
since I don't have to change the heatsink
but I have a feeling I'm out of thermal paste
and the stock cooler has the paste, not the CPU itself :\
I'm going to look around to see if I still have some

12:20 PM
uhoh, it seems the backside of my heatsink is glued on to my motherboard :S
hmmm it padding on the backplate is probably to protect the rear side, since it's not flat :\

12:44 PM
I am officially no longer getting involved in meta discussions about Super User.

Why's that? The [software] / [hardware] discussion?
