I know already and understand why we don't want to !!/report NAA's, as there are too many of them and it's harder to detect them with regexes. But gibberish/vandalism should be doable.

@Undo what attack vectors are we looking at?

@ArtOfCode Depends on how it's built, but if one could get hold of a metasmoke key (not hard), or just deploy some rogue code (easier), then sit in chat and tp stuff...
Not really sure what the motivation for that would be, but people are weird.
At a maximum security level, have a separate Smokey instance that doesn't post to chat and doesn't allow automatic pulling, on a trusted person's server.

Rogue-code-deploy is probably still the biggest vector we're looking at
Bob writes some code that reports everything, then tp's the lot of it.

it's always bob

Mitigation? Start enforcing code review for pull requests; keep our direct-access lists down to trusted people.
@Undo isn't it supposed to be Eve?
Alice and Bob are the communicating parties, and Eve is the MITM

@ArtOfCode I don't like the idea of slowing us down, but it might be necessary

4:15 PM
Wait...why would we be concerned about the MS Key? Users would be flagging with their own tokens via the API. Of course, those have to remain secure.

@Andy Because the MS key is the pathway to getting something into that flagging system

@ArtOfCode I have no problem with code reviews. We already do them informally.

@Andy If you have a metasmoke key, you can report anything you like to metasmoke

Keeping API tokens secure is relatively easy

Ah. You're talking one step before actually flagging on SE

4:16 PM
Right

@Undo the deploy cycle from approval to running would still be stupid-fast, it just might take a little longer for a PR to get approved.
that said, we already merge PR's pretty fast - we just need to make some guidelines for what should and shouldn't be merged, and then follow 'em
we can use GH's review system and make sure there's at least one review on a PR before it's merged

@ArtOfCode this is why I had the backup of the code on my hypervisors - just in case i need to do a very quick switch to fix a tiny thing, but don't want to rely on everyone being around XD (Also, a test bed for deploying Smokey changes, and such... gonna actually test the 'bad credentials' thing in a short while... since I'm a little bored and have nothing else to do)

@AquariusOne Something is wrong with the GH credentials, tell someone to check the GH credentials.

yay the code works!

@someone can you check the GH credentials?

at least we don't have random crashes now with "Bad credentials" errors - that's all fixed for eternity.
it'll give us that nice little error msg there :)

Well done!

also in case anyone cares, @AquariusOne is my sockpuppet - one of the reasons it's explicit-write here - with the privileged access I have as diamondmod, to test with an unpriv'd account :)

@AquariusOne You don't have code privileges, but I've created a pull request for you.

good that's working too

@ArtOfCode @Undo your discussion about possible attack vectors... Was that prompted by a reply from SE about auto flagging?

@angussidney prompted by another ping to 'em, actually
which... I don't think we ever got a response to

@angussidney Can neither confirm nor deny... :)
(seriously, go get yourself a diamond somewhere)

While we're on the topic, does anyone see any more potential security problems and/or mitigations for this system?

@ArtOfCode for autoflag?

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Repeating characters in answer: Does more reflective aluminum foil make a room cooler compared to less reflective foil? by Jeff on physics.stackexchange.com

@SmokeDetector naa-

aye

@ArtOfCode well the one problem is if the account is hijacked or a rogue Smokey rolling around with creds. If we limit it to autoflag using someone specific's account that we can always shut that account on the offending site (CMs can shut it globally) and then we address the problem there (change all the credentials!)
that's the biggest thing on my radar in terms of "abuse risk"

Account hijack is unlikely, given that the password is a good one and assuming that we're all pretty careful with it

Hung socket again? Not Found

Rails.root: /var/railsapps/metasmoke/releases/20161212200132

@ThomasWard socket up?

it should be'
!!/alive

@ThomasWard Of course

yep it's up and pinging
and I don't see a "Smokey Down" notice to indicate the socket isn't up and communicating

So why is metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/posts/by-url?url=//… failing? And I get no FDSC additions to the flag dialog?
Was working earlier ...

10:05 PM
@ArtOfCode I don't think the issue being seen is a Smokey issue, I think the issue David is seeing is MS side

It appears to be just the last report. The previous one works as expected.

20 quid says it's a Unicode issue.
@ThomasWard you wouldn't get a smokey-down email if the socket was down, the status pings are HTTP requests

Blame unicorns unicode

@ArtOfCode Emojis in the answer?

10:07 PM
@ArtOfCode well the socket is up, otherwise Smokey would fail

@DavidPostill yep

My name is jeff😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

@ThomasWard oh no it wouldn't :) that socket can go down and Smokey'll run just fine
that socket can even not be present to start with and it'll still run fine

really? We should probably have Smokey check if the socket is up heh
@ArtOfCode well, my guess is the socket is working fine. I don't run MS though, so :P

@ThomasWard if you've got ping messages in the console, it's working fine

@ArtOfCode yep

which is why my bet is on unicode

So do I need to file a bug report somewhere?

10:09 PM
nah, unicode bugs are common yet rare enough that they're not usually worth fixing

I mean, you could on the metasmoke GitHub, but we'll probably just say that they're so rare that it's not worth tracking down.

OK. I'll leave it this time.

They're also a massive PITA to track down... the DB is already UTF-8 encoded, so I have no idea where the issue would be.
