@Undo I would get a diamond somewhere... But the thing is that I'm not active enough anywhere to get one, and while I do do quite a bit of moderation on many sites, sadly its rep that the voters look for

Get in on the ground floor of a new beta site (ideally one you know something about)
That was my mindset until a few years ago

Also, I'll have a good hard think about possible vulnerabilities, but it will have to wait until later this arvo

can't wait until the latter portion of this arvo
;)

1:27 AM
I want to go get a diamond. The only problem is that the only two sites I think I have a shot on aren't having elections right now
I can wait though. :)

So as long as it's ready for when you arrive back that's fine?

Quick...in less than 50 words...someone describe keybase.io to me and why I should a.) trust them and b.) trust they aren't going to disappear in the next X months

@Andy Math, mostly
It's a way to share public keys.
I have 41 more words.

Cool. Use those to answer B. :)

@Andy If they do, it doesn't matter because we can just exchange public keys over email or whatever
Keybase facilitates a web of trust, which is probably mostly overkill for us.

if the functionality is to be integrated to SO proper (is that what the document is for?) then I think you need to think about what that system will look like, rather than what the current system looks like
I don't think SO is going to take code from Github and run it on their servers without a process on their side

5:20 AM
@tripleee Yeah, that's super-long-term or probably no-term.
We'd still run it on our hardware (maybe their hardware administered by us, but probably not), but we'd have some hooks to send signal to the system.

@SmokeDetector f

This document is about the first baby step, simple automatic creation of spam flags on posts we're confident about.

If you wanted to be strict, have metasmoke check for new GitHub master-branch commits and require approval from someone before enabling flagging.

off the top of my head, what I would suggest is to keep the current system as a test bed for rules, and only merge rules for which you can display test results over some amount of time
merge to the SO copy I mean
then, "being trusted" is not enough, you need to do some paperwork to show that the merge is according to process (i.e. it ran for x hours and produced y hits and z false positives)

No reason to run copies, really. We have a giant repository of information in both metasmoke and SO itself to check against, we just need to use it

@tripleee If we were running actual integration, or on their hardware, yeah.

because being "trusted" is just the first step, people get drunk or psychotic and do weird things even when they are "trusted"

Also, just make a big deal out of any false positive we accidentally flag. That's served us well in the past, no reason it can't continue working. For bonus points, automatically retract flags if the post isn't showing a downward-trending score after x minutes.
@tripleee As a ground rule, we'd want to limit the system so that it can only cast x % of the flags required to actually nuke something. That mostly eliminates the alcohol factor.

5:30 AM
I just want to reiterate that the document is only talking about the security issues of automatic flagging from us, SO not involved.

that

@Undo I think this point will need to be brought up over and over.

@Undo No! Then you'd miss things like this -- which still needs spam flags after a long-ish while.
But deserves them.

@BrockAdams Sure. I'm talking about "we cast a flag ten seconds after it was created, and five minutes later no other humans have flagged. Something is weird, we're bailing"

so then the "/integration" in the title should perhaps then be removed or at the very least explained in some more details

5:32 AM
Yeah

@Undo Maybe. But based on my anecdotals, I'd give it up to an hour.

aye
@BrockAdams yeah, might be pushing it. False negatives are okay, false positives are bad.

Agreed.

Better to tune out the false negatives than be scrambling to tune out the false positives.

Another way to remove the alcohol factor would be to only allow under 18/21s to pull :P

5:35 AM
Umm...you must have hung around a different crowd than I did. I think my drinking days came to a screeching halt around my 21st birthday.
It became less fun when I was the person sent to get the alcohol all the time

Me? No. I've got a while until I reach that.

I suppose it depends on what "a while" is to everyone
To me, I've got a while :)

your profile says 38.9k

@Andy , You realize that if this was a movie, you'd die in the next scene... ;)

@tripleee That "whooshing" sound you just heard what something flying over my head

5:40 AM
still, to me, the most obvious risk here is that there is only the live code base -- if you were to start rearchitecting some part of it, what's to say it won't suddenly start doing weird, uncontrolled things

@BrockAdams Hopefully in an awesome blaze of glory. :)

@Andy (mixing rep with age, nvm)

@tripleee metasmoke can be a stable platform, though, with whatever controls and sanity checks we want.

so what I guess I'm proposing is to run a test and a prod version in some way or form
probably what I'd like to see is a single live code base but with checks to disable the auto-flagging and sane and reasonably strict rules for when it can be re-enabled
so in the terms of the linked document, "vulnerability: code base could be destabilized by mistake or malice" (not really a "vulnerability" but a "risk") and "current mitigations: somebody with privileges could notice and revert back to a stable commit, hopefully sooner rather than later" and finally "possible improvements: define a process for when the code base is declared stable enough to enable auto-flag" maybe?
implicitly then, flagging would be disabled for a while after a commit goes live, I suppose?
or you'd have two instances, one with vetted, stable rules, and another a test bed with flimsy heuristics and new rules still in development <-- this would be attractive for other reasons, too

Title - Position 1-33: https://www.soloadsresources.com

that's had two spam posts in the past 48hrs with that on Ask Ubuntu :/

Only one hit on MS.
So perhaps a blacklist is in order, to improve the chances of getting caught.

yeah but the same post triggered in the past 48, in answers.
didn't get caught here
but it's on my radar as "evil"
the links to 'solos'

I have seen one of the posts when it was still 'live'.

indeed. while not inherently bad, the user in question who was posting it was saying "You could also try [link]" as a solution to a question on how to cut/splice audio under Ubuntu. And it's just an ad company. (Such links should be purgified)

@ThomasWard Blacklisted soloadsresources\.com - the entry will be applied via autopull if CI succeeds.

@ThomasWard yeah, I was too late to flag, I guess.

indeed.
in either case, it was torpedoed by me and the evilness

CI on ac30af6 succeeded. Message contains 'autopull', pulling...

i took a phaser right to it ;)

Ancient Post Review completed, but it looks like there's still only one capture on MS so far
in either case, it's been seen twice by me, deleted twice (once due to flags queue).
