@RegisteredUser Just a heads up - you can use 'sd k' for spam (it is the same as tpu-), 'sd n' for NAA, and 'sd f' for a false positive (which is the same as fp-). Note that you should generally use f or fp- rather than fpu-, since fpu- whitelists the user. Once you get a little more experienced with SD we will explain when to use fpu-, but for now just stick with f.

@Kyll sadly, I don't think it's possible without SE DB access, since our info is incomplete. However, it would be really interesting

@angussidney I suppose it would be somewhat easy to check for an employee: Take the IDs of all regulars here, query the DB for spam-deleted posts with our IDs in the flaggers section.
It was interesting to do so in SOCVR with the CV queue reviews

@Pops Would it be possible for one of the analytics guys to find out what weight we actually have here in deleting spam? Like, of confirmed spam amounts where at least 1 charcoal member flagged, how many of the 6 total flags we actually ended up contributing as a whole?

^ What does the above mean?

@Kyll Smokey gets a Quota of 9999 daily API requests
Now was just the time for the daily quota reset

@Kyll How many API requests we made per-site to detect spam

It bundles requests in order to not run out of quota

Ah, nice!

9:27 AM
The bot literally sends an API request for the whole Q/A thread every time a post is bumped. However, that would mean that we would run out of quota fast, so we bundle multiple requests from the same site into one to save requests.

Bundling requests together can be tricky, you wait to long and spam risks getting deleted without being seen, and if you wait to short you use to much api calls, the current code even has a "happy hour" check to have a time dependent api queue

@SmokeDetector f

@Ferrybig Woah.

One of the things SE could do for smokey would be to give us some more api quota so that isn't necessary

@Magisch we've been asking for it... I guess they may consider it when some more work gets done on integration, but for now it looks like we have to wait

9:35 AM
The entire integration talk seems a little half hearted atm
there'd be so many incredibly easy things they could do to help things along
Outside of that one talk with pops a few months back absolutely nothing has happened

@Magisch when you are negotiating with the heads of a huge site like SE, sometimes it seems like they don't care much. But knowing SE, they do care, it's just that it's somewhere down 6-8 positions on their todo list. Yeah, we have to wait, but hey, it's a start.

@angussidney 6-8 positions down the list means maybe in 5 years if nothing else comes up in SE terms

Well, the mention in the SE quality project revival meta post makes it seem like it's on their mind and they're serious about getting it done soonish. Yeah, the lack of communication has been a little annoying, but I'm just happy to wait and see how it pans out

@ArtOfCode @hichris123 's [a-z]{5,}(sh)?elly seems to play nice with the test cases I tried so far

@ArtOfCode Now my inner curiosity want to know how you managed to ping such old chat message

@Magisch sure, but [a-z] only matches alphabetical lowercase. \w matches "word characters", which IIRC is alphabetical either case plus numbers

@Magisch do you have a bunch of test cases? that's really the litmus test for what's best

I'm not supposed to touch actual code
All the shellys from new york in that list are spammers

looks like [a-z]{5,} would be sufficient at least for now
easy to extend if they change, and likely that they change more than that if they do

I wonder what we could do about spam on profile pages @ArtOfCode? Because most of these have profile pages like this: stackoverflow.com/users/6750867/dirsashelly
That still ends up in google search index

looks actually like [a-z]{4,}ashelly
do you have any which are not ashellies?
there's one [a-z]{3}ashelly even
without "new york"
@Magisch should these be reported to SO actually?

@ArtOfCode have a look at the query Magisch posted, there's hundreds of'em, all clearly created by the same spammer

@ArtOfCode Up to a point. But that point doesn't include spamvertising :/

A: Offensive profiles - where to draw the line?

Tim PostIf an average person would clearly take offense at an avatar or profile due to: Graphic violence, nudity or sexual content Targeting of any race, religion, gender or ethnic group Exceptional cases where very poor taste would be likely to offend most people ... then you should flag it for mode...

Spam is not offensive enough ...

11:36 AM
@DavidPostill Flag any of their posts as 'other' - that's hard if they don't post at all.

@Glorfindel My point is that spam profiles don't pass the offensive test and therefore should not be flagged ...

@Glorfindel Or if they have posted but got spam nuked and perma banned from posting

even if they are not by themselves "offensive" they abuse Stack Overflow for their own purposes

As far as I'm concerned spammers are thieves. They steal storage space and bandwidth with their crap. Many spammers are also spamming illegal products (counterfeit) or promoting illegal services (cracking). They should all be locked up like any other thief/conman.

11:44 AM
@DavidPostill Spamvertising is sadly still seen as a legitimate marketing strategy

SE are providing free advertising for the spamming profiles (they are google indexed) and should take some responsibility for that.

that article is really, really old though

@tripleee It's kind of indicative though

Its really sad that spam is used on such a scale that even if only 22,7% of messages make it through, 0,0127% of messaged people click through, and only 0,26% of those buy one thing, it still comes out to 7k dollars a day

Yeah, conversion rate of just 0.0000081%.

@DavidPostill We cannot. It's time for SE to step in and give this room more powers. A double flag weight would be nice.

@JanDvorak Yeah, I was kind of including SE amongst the we ...

sd f

@JanDvorak Don't think that'll happen
If Integration happens, It'll happen more as taking the nice things from SD and putting them on network level, cutting out the middle man (us)

And, as SD gets sucked into the cogwork of SE, it will be time to adapt the old SD to specialize in what SD-internal doesn't catch and become SD2.

@Magisch the name 'Drupal' sounds like it could be the next Cialis or Viagra. Spammers feel at home there, apparently.
