Do you think we miss more posts now because of the blacklisting/watch lists causing smokey reboots?

yes

We should probably load the watchlist dynamically every 5 minutes or so
No reason not to do that for the blacklist also

So during restarts smokey can miss posts? I wonder if smokey should/could be made into a two part - one to fill the queue with posts, another to do the spam check on the queue - and that's the part which is restarted
That's what I think should be done

Restart: API quota is 15558.

2:25 PM
@Henders true, but spammers often go on sprees, so I personally think that as soon as you blacklist something it should be live
And anyway, I don't think it would be that much work, as Smokey is somewhat already divided into all the separate scripts
It would just be moving findspam.py (and dependencies) to it's own process

"just"
That is the large chunk of Smoke Detector

It's what decides if a post is spam correct?

yes

Only if Smokey hadn't been made as a self-modifying program :P

J F
What if we used something like Redis to store the list of posts? One queue could have a list of post ids and sites, another could store API responses for each post, a third could contain posts identified as spam, and a fourth could store chat messages.

2:35 PM
Yay! let's have a separate bot just to watch the realtime tab while Smokey reboots \o/

J F
Then you can have four parts — the post watcher, the API fetcher, the spam detector, and the screamer.

That's what I'm proposing (at least two separate parts) - but I think I'm making a few mistakes due to not knowing Smokey properly
Maybe this is what NG should be?

This is exactly what NG shouldn't do
this is a hack to allow Smokey reboot frequently because that's what he needs in order to change its filters.

So how should NG update?

entirely in-memory
If you want to mirror the structure to disk for persistence, sure. But it shouldn't require a restart to parse the file again - and you shouldn't even need to parse the file.
It's not even a source file but a text file!

Question: would people be more inclined to port spam checks to NG if I made a wiki entry about it? I think it's kind of self-explanatory but I figure it can't hurt

NG?

mostly in reply to
3 hours ago, by J F
Unfortunately, NG seems dead. It hasn’t been updated in a month.

still confused ... why is there an SD-NG if regular SD is still active?

because classic Smokey's codebase has some problems

so why not just bump a major version on the reg repo?
SD 2.x

@CalvT븃 I think Smokey already does what you're describing, in that it pickles the queue containing posts to be scanned on shutdown and reloads it when it starts
@CaffeineAddiction eh
Art gave me just a regular repo

6:26 PM
@quartata NG or Regular? Because we where talking about it as due to watching and more blacklisting, Smokey is restarting a lot these days, potentially missing spam posts.

@CalvT븃 regular
NG stores it in a database

I suppose any posts while Smokey is restarting would be missed

@CalvT븃 Yeah but that would be pretty freaky timing. Plus it would be scanned when bumped

True, just general consensus seems to be that we are missing a bunch more posts now due to restarts

It is?

6:47 PM
eh?
Reboots are super tiny.
Also, my post-ID-inference thing is going to take care of missed posts from a timeframe that small
Should probably persist that list

Sweet. @Undo, could you send me the pickles that Smokey currently has running? I'm seriously considering doing this and would like to know the current data the pickles store

really, getting the kind of uptime we get without dedicating money to it is pretty good

hint: salt

Folks donating time and hardware is awesome, but fragile. Making it work as well as we have is hard
@Andy Can try. Never actually SSH'd in from my work machine

@Undo Maybe SE could provide some hosting
Hint hint pops

If you can't now, that's fine. Just sometime :)

6:57 PM
No I know and I'm not complaining, it's just odd that we've been running into a lot of problems lately in particular

@Magisch Highly unlikely
and probably unwanted.

I think it's because we lost Aurora

@Magisch They don't need to do that. We have multiple instances and complete coverage.
If it really is a big deal, I can fire up some instances too

@quartata True, although it'd be good to quantify those problems
At some level, each of us only see one timezone, which is going to skew our perception differently.

J F
What if we had a system to !!/pull a standby instance and make it the active one whenever a commit happened?

6:59 PM
the question is
do we really want to rely on user hosting for the long haul

we've had a pretty long haul
