@JourneymanGeek When I do eth0, it brings up the DHCP client message, then can't find it
@JourneymanGeek then eth1 doesn't work
So I did dhclient and dhclient -r and rebooted

@TheLordofTime Has a nice answer now.

12:24 AM
@geezanansa You seem to be saying I need 4 partitions just for Ubuntu? I myself don't need /home on a separate partition. That was for someone else....

@Seth No not telling you what you need as making partitions for any Ubuntu directory is optional. Sorry to jump in on a conversation that you had earlier regarding partitioning. In that conversation you were asking if you should.. "So shrink from Windows, and then create Ubuntu's from the LiveCD?"

@geezanansa Ah, sorry. Misunderstood some of that then. Jump in all you want though :)
I've never done a full regular install (the partition way), so its kinda new to me.
Not quite ready to start though.. Still waiting on Windows to finish it's stuff.

@Seth Here is a better link than the one i gave earlier help.ubuntu.com/community/CategoryInstallation
@Seth do not know what architecture your hardware is to narrow search down for you

AMD64
That's a pretty interesting link.
I don't expect trouble, but it's best to be prepared!

@Seth just basically work out sizes before starting !

12:39 AM
Yes.. I need to do that. I was thinking of shrinking 100 GBs and setting about 10 or so apart for SWAP.
I have a TON of RAM, but I never get close to using much of it so I think I'll be OK with that much.

So I was poking around on the Nexus7 via ssh and there are loads of i2c endpoints in /dev. That explains why half the peripherals aren't working I suppose...moving on.

@Seth i've done a thousand partition operations
want help?

I might later, but ATM I'm not ready to begin.
Windows is still taking it's time doing its thing....

hehehe
i can write up a basic guide to installation if you want
/me has to load Raring into a VM anyways

That would be good :)

12:46 AM
so i'll load Quantal as well :P
IT WILL BE A SCREEN CAPTURE WITH ME TALKING

I'm actually doing Raring this time around..

i assume Ubuntu only, no Windows?

that would be handy

or is windows being included?

No, dual boot. Alas I still need Windows for some things.

12:47 AM
OK, are you installing Windows first?

Yes.

how much space are you allotting?

Windows has whole drive and I was thinking of giving 90 GB to Ubuntu and 10 for SWAP.

overall disk size?
(and type)
(also RAM specs and other system specs.)

450 GB'ish. Laptop internal SATA I think.

12:49 AM
SATA/PATA is irrelevant
SSD or not?

No.

RAM
Processor Speed.

:P
16GB
I don't ever use near that much though.
So I was just going to do 10GB for SWAP.
I don't care about hibernation that much.
I don't know why you need to know my processor speed.

because :p

"Because" isn't a good reason :P

12:51 AM
UEFI or BIOS?

2.20GHZ
@geezanansa UEFI off, so legacy BIOS.

wait...
windows 8?

No.

(did it come preinstalled with UEFI off?)

yeah it did.
I don't plan on turning it on ever either :P
I don't think I need any help though. Just make free space in Windows and turn it into a logical partition though the LiveCD right?

12:55 AM
erm...
no.
you have to resize the partition
from within Ubuntu's LIve environment
to make free unallocated space for Ubuntu's partitions
then you have to let your computer resize the Windows partition
then the system will create the ubuntu partitions you specify
then it'll install GRUB
one tiny problem though:

Make free space in Windows, turn it into partitions in LiveCD (through installer). Sounds like the same thing to me.

during resize, if your computer is turned off or loses power...
the resize fails
and the data is lost.
so BACK UP DATA FIRST

@TheLordofTime Yes yes I know. I'm doing that right now.
I'm not that new to this kind of stuff :P

better resizing windows using windows disk mananagement

Right. That's what I plan on doing.

12:57 AM
if you just defrag first and back up your partition table, you should be able to recover from a power outage without data loss

yeah, I am just finishing up a system image.

1:26 AM
@geezanansa can you do that while the system's running though.
safely that is.

1:36 AM
It's so annoying how HP decides to use 4 primary partitions.
Is @JorgeCastro around?

So I added an answer here:

A: How do I quickly switch between workspaces in unity?

SethIn 13.04 workspaces are disabled by default. To enable them, open "Appearance" from the dash. It looks like this: Switch to the "Behavior" tab and check "Enable workspaces". After that the normal shortcuts will work: Super+S for the workspace overview and Ctrl+Alt+Arrow Keys to sw...

And was wondering if I covered everything you expected.
Because I didn't find a whole lot that was different in 13.04
Gotta restart. BRB

is that on a clean install?
think ctrl-alt-arrowkeys isn't the default anymore

No, it was a LiveCD. I'll have a clean install in an hour or two.
I'll check that link out in a minute here.

I think that plus a link to how to change them back to ctrl-alt-arrowkeys outta do it
there's an existing keyboard shortcut modification answer somewhere

2:33 AM
@JorgeCastro Hmm. That might be the case. Those keys didn't work for me either until I turned workspaces on from the settings.
I'll try it on a clean install ASAP.
Right now Windows absolutely refuses my password out of the blue.. so no clean install for a little while. (I need windows before Ubuntu)

2:45 AM
is @Oli around?

Hey guys, trying to install ubuntu on a custom build, and I keep getting busy box. Googled around a fair but, no to avail. Can someone help me?
@seth?

Sorry, I'm afraid I don't know anything about that..
What do you mean by "custom build"?
(BTW, you've hit the room right when it's quiet..)

3:43 AM
@JorgeCastro you there?

@LuisAlvarado Whats up buddy?
Is this a bug?

Just wondering if anyone could recommend any screencast video editor software, I'm testing out Kdenlive and OpenShot right now

<-- likes Openshot a lot.

9:06 AM
for screencasts?

No for editing them.

What do you use it for?

Never made any screencasts but edit family videos with OpenShot.

cool well I'll give it a go
just looking for something to speed certain areas of the video up with
ah, managed to crash it already

yeah it crashes occasionally :/

9:14 AM
Oh but I do like the easy splicing tool, that's just what I was looking for.

boo!

@Greg ppa:openshot.developers/ppa my get bugfixes
@Rinzwind mew

@Rinzwind :[

I see an influx of questions of the type "I installed Ubuntu with the erase all and it erased all; now help me restore my documents" :-P
thing is: the answers range from "you are screwed" to "use testdisk"
so who is correct? >:-D
and of course no-one ever makes a backup ...

My answer is that for the effort involved in getting the files back, screw them.
Any file that isn't backed up in 4 physical locations is dead to me.

9:29 AM
@Rinzwind had you ever tried to recover files from PhotoRec? This makes you make backups twice a day :P
20.000 files of different sizes all named with a random number....
It recovers thumbnail pics from the web temporaries too \o/
Folders? No go... But the important files are still there, somewhere.

@Takkat no MY important files ARE backupped

Q: Moved from windows lost all my files - Any File recovery Tools

user151010Previously i was using the windows 7. When i try to replace the windows to ubuntu i lost all of my other drive files. Is there any way to recover these files. I have my project files and some important files in one of my folder. Anyone pls help... Ok Is there any chance to recover a single file....

I kept my comment eh sorta friendly >:D

9:45 AM
I try to make sure not to have any important files in the first place. Way easier than keeping backups.

10:09 AM
so true :-D
My movies and music are already backup on isohunt and tokyotosho >:)

Q: Xorg.conf 2 identical monitors one VGA one HDMI different quality

George KatsanosI have two identical monitors connected on my pc but only the one connected via HDMI is "fully" recognized inside nvidia-settings. I am trying to manually "decrypt" the xorg.conf file to make the necessary changes. There is "Sony" monitor which is disabled (that's correct) and I have two identic...

vga and hdmi... by definition the vga will always be of lesser quality. or am I missing something!?

VGA ==> analog ==> poor
HDMI ==> digital ==> issues
@Rinzwind it may be my eyesight but I can't see a difference from the two shots.
(which makes sense as the shots both are digital)

yeah also was wondering about that.
I was: ehmmm what is the vga and what is the hdmi one? >:)

Q: Recursive shell script

umpirskyI made a typo and run my shell script recursively. https://gist.github.com/umpirsky/5415963 This caused system to become unresponsive and all I can do is hard restart. Tried same on MacOS and it was able to detect this problem and terminated the scripot with an error. I think operating system...

@Rinzwind I experienced the same problem
I have two monitors, one is portrait one is landscape, the portrait one looked like the one in the screenshot with weird antialiased text

@Rinzwind sudo anycommand -r is bad.

proprietary drivers fixed it all though, or you can fiddle with xorg.conf

10:31 AM
@Takkat stop intefering you >:)

A: Ubuntu 12.10 User interface

RinzwindAs of this month you can install the official derivative called Ubuntu Gnome (previously called Gnome Remix). You can download it from here.

takkat is quite correct - its a dupe

fossy! help me!
I added 13.04 to the one Takkat linked to

no help for you ... you know everything already.

but how do I create the link in the question?

click "share" on the question/answer, copy and paste

10:39 AM
whaaaaaaaaa I probably did it >:D
and marked the other one so get to work fossy >:)

can you pad out the answer - a sort of "how to" guide with screenshots on how to switch from gnome-shell to "gnome-classic" ?

is there a how to? >:-D

anyone used ffmpeg to stream with before?

wait... how to about what? >:)

... like "use software center - install the package, logout, use this option, login and you see this"

10:41 AM
ehm. Gnome is plain old gnome with nothing extra me thinks

I presume the "gnome-extensions" you need to install to make it look like gnome-classic is packaged?

noo it is a complete new derivative ;)
well old but now official >:)

<-- was now reminded of that he always wanted to try out the new Ubuntu GNOME

LOL

... so you install plain old unity ... you cant install a package like "gnome-session-fallback" to get 13.04 gnome-classic ?

10:44 AM
no no you install plain old Gnome 2.something. So you get classic as it is w/o any Unity

fallback is still packaged for 13.04: packages.ubuntu.com/raring/gnome-session-fallback

oh :*

But I did not try out if it works.

ok brb... lunch >:)

11:06 AM
@fossfreedom how the translations on launchpad are approved? I did some translations on your project CoverArt Browser, and I'd like to know when they will be approved.

which language?

Portuguese
@fossfreedom I translated the coverartsearchproviders all 16 strings and 2 need a review.

I can approve myself ... but if you are looking for a confirmation ... need to email the launchpad.net/~lp-l10n-pt group ... or ask a fellow speaker such as @brunopereira to help.
BTW - thanks!

Ok I'll ask Bruno when I see him

@TheLordofTime Personally i would not resize a partition when booted to it. Diskpart is a Windows Disk Management tool which can be run from recovery options at boot time i.e. before system is booted. So no i would not either.:p

Can someone help me on this question?

Q: Streaming pre-recorded video as webcam source in 13.04

GregThe source video can be encoded into virtually any format. Let's say it sits in ~/Videos/Test.webm. The end result is simply to stream the video, with sound, directly through a 'fake' video device, so it can be picked up by Google+ Hangouts. The video was created with ffmpeg, and reading around...

@Greg not really ... are you looking to create a loop-back device such as my answer here? askubuntu.com/questions/54032/compiling-avld-on-11-04/…

@fossfreedom I thought "loopback" meant there had to be an existing /dev/video* source to use? I don't have an existing device, and want to 'fake' the video device by pumping the raw video somewhere

as per the answer "This will create a /dev/video0 or /dev/video1 (etc) device." - i.e. a fake video device.
may not be what you are after though after re-reading your Q

I'll have a look into it, but I have a feeling AVLD has been attempted before.
@fossfreedom Ah, it looks like that might be the answer... managed to get a video loopback device recognised, but now I've got to figure out how to stream the video to it... any idea?

not sure ... let me have a look for an answer.
this has a bunch of record/play options with devices - noah.org/wiki/video_4_linux_2_notes
thats the end of my googlefu

11:34 AM
:)

@Zignd ... how similar is Brazillian Portuguese with native Portuguese? - pt_BR is 100% translated. Dunno if that helps?

Really? So I think I translated the wrong one. Sorry I think.
@fossfreedom They look pretty much the same, but there are some different writting conventions
@fossfreedom I so sorry for messing this up, I'll make some modifications to fix the grammar to native portuguese.

hey - no worries ... thanks for your interest and time. Everything helps!

@fossfreedom I just checked my translations and there was only one string that differed from pt_BR to pt_PT and I just modified it so it's all good now.

11:49 AM
excellent - lets hope someone from the pt_PT team does the other 173 strings :)

yeah

12:29 PM
hi folks, I have seen askubuntu.com/questions/248682/… which is a question about how to run a game on ubuntu. Can I ask questions on how to optimize primusrun for steam?

1:06 PM
@fossfreedom the cover art plugin has a ppa now?
link, im bored...
@Private That question is for a issue while running and that is totally on topic, I would also see no issues with you asking if there are any optimizations / recommendations to run Steam with primusrun

1:46 PM
good day to you all.

2:00 PM
Quick question: Does anyone think this should be on the n7 ubuntu wiki? docs.google.com/document/d/… seems legit and it might give driver modders a jumping off point...

@BrunoPereira hmmm ... has had a PPA for a while ... askubuntu.com/questions/112148/… for a manual install ... this for the PPA install (package rhythmbox-plugin-coverart-browser) - askubuntu.com/questions/147942/…
@BrunoPereira dont believe you :)

A: Can I keep my files intact while upgrading ubuntu

The Lord of TimeThere is no guarantee all your files will be intact. There's no way to give such a guarantee effectively. You can upgrade-in-place (command line: sudo do-release-upgrade -d, i think) once Raring is released, but there's still the risk of data loss, either because the upgrade fails and your syst...

o.O
is that all it takes to get rep nowadays...? :/

@fossfreedom but I can do the translations on the PPA now, right? I would rather do it there directly...

jrg
guess so.

Wow this new Update Software icon looks silly.

jrg
2:16 PM
i will say that i didn't notice it.

@BrunoPereira launchpad doesnt allow that - you update the translations, then install (manually) the translation on your PC with the software. Thus this current translation is for v0.8 - where the software will be made available in a PPA next week. Until then, you install manually from the github release-0.8 branch.

no - create a new question on SU

hey @jrg

jrg
da?

2:19 PM
did you add the AU section here?
I figure it's either you or jokerdino

jrg
i don't remember doing that.
@jokerdino: Is the above you? ^^

anyway, they are working on a new "community" page
so if someone wants to go over the AU section and make sure it's awesome
looks awesome so far

Is there anything new in 13.04? (Downloaded the daily testing image but I notice no differences since 12.10. Except the ugly icon. But nothing else... o.O)

@Shiki check the release notes?
@Shiki also define "new"
@Shiki because "new" is overly broad.

switch to qt5 by default right? so that's a big one

2:27 PM
Qt's been in main for a while
since at least 12.04 iirc

i had to add a ppa to get the dev kit on 12.04, either way though.

oh oh, for app devs
yeah I think that's still fast-moving

@TheLordofTime : Well, as in 12.10 had TOYS (IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN) when you searched. (Got fixed later, though.) Or had a "snappier" Unity. More Unity options. Uhm... "Files". Things like that...

yep. i'm focusing on the ubuntu-touch stuff and full-on ubuntu on nexus7 wants his device to work completely

2:31 PM
Oh, thanks Jorge! Now we are talking.

@Shiki "snappier unity" is irrelevant - that's usually hardware dependent, besides Lubuntu is lighter if you don't want the strain of Unity.
@Shiki "Unity Options". Overly broad, can't answer.
@Shiki "Files". Also overly broad.

Lel

@Shiki as i said read the release notes once it's released
then you can know what was/wasn't changed.
at least the general things.

Yeah I will. The OMGUbuntu article was quite comprehensive though.
By the way...

@Shiki ... omgwat there's more?

2:32 PM
Mark announced those "ninja features"..
!
Will there be anything like that in 13.04, or that will come for a later version?
@Lord Wanted to check the Launchpad page but it's dead m8.

"snappier unity" isn't irrelevant
it's faster on the same hardware
it's finally fast for most people

i think that conversation just got started wrong and started to spiral. anyway. moves along

spiral?

just the "doesn't matter" general malaise bit.

everything matters!

I wonder if Ubuntu will ever have an agreement with Oracle again. It was awesome to have Oracle Java from the partner repo.
