12:01 AM
@mateo_salta Oh, for a moment there I was thinking the opposite. I thought the fan was to help keep the computer cool :P

@NathanOsman silly Osman no. The computer is there to keep the awesome power of the fan down.

Keeps the basement toasty...

P.S. I am having a nasty time figuring out why my SSL socket implementation isn't receiving any data (or letting me know that it is... if it is).

@NathanOsman for nitroshare, or the gitdroid project?

@LuisAlvarado Parts of my notebook get too hot to touch sometimes, especially around the vents.
@mateo_salta NitroShare.

12:04 AM
Really. You should write a book. Every time you have a problem is some important thing. Next time I'll be reading "Damn it, could not connect to the Curiosity Robot via SSH tunneling".

One of the unit tests caught it... which in some ways is a good thing.

@LuisAlvarado \o/

@LuisAlvarado I probably should... I have a blog though. Does that count?

Yeap hehe

Hi everyone.

12:06 AM
Damn!. Got hooked on --> quickmediasolutions.com/blog/16/…

@RolandiXor Hi!

I knew I should have not read Nathan's blog
@RolandiXor Hi Roland.

@Seth wazzzzzzzzzzzzaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap?
@LuisAlvarado hey :D:D:D

@RolandiXor: Hello.

@NathanOsman oi!

12:07 AM
@RolandiXor Reformatting computer... pulls hair out

@Seth e_e

@RolandiXor: I take it you got my message about 2buntu?

@NathanOsman not yet
I have to check my mail
was out of the house

No, not an email.
I pinged you here.

And I'm reformatting the Windows part... doubley bad. pulls more hair out

12:08 AM
Oh?

I published it.

@Seth yikes

Is that okay?
It was sitting in the review queue for a couple of days, so I just went ahead and published it.

Sure!
I have not checked the queue for a little while - I have some drafts to finish myself actually.
Work gets in the way sometimes, along with writing.

Speaking of really great Android games... Bad Piggies (from the makers of Angry Birds) is awesome.

12:09 AM
aahhh, yeah.

But don't start playing it if you want to get some serious work done.

It is

Because... you won't.

Oh btw, how much can we do with theming? I'd like to make some improvements to our theme.

It Happens
It did.... ;(

12:10 AM
@RolandiXor How extensive?

Making pigs fly is much more important.
6

@NathanOsman not sure yet.

We can move "elements" around the page very easily.

I'd basically like to utilize the features of bootstrap and see what I can come up with.

Changing colors will involve tweaking the LESS files used by Bootstrap.
If it's not a really major change and affects one or two items, you could always use plain CSS and stick !important on the end of declarations as needed.

12:11 AM
Developing the sites for work has been a breeze with bootstrap ^_^

I know, it saves so much time - and looks awesome.

So, would I need to touch the Python code to make changes as well?

O_o

(Cause I don't want to mess it up)

@RolandiXor No, you don't need to touch any of the Python stuff to change page styles.
The site is divided into "apps".
...and each "app" has a "static" directory.

12:12 AM
@NathanOsman cool

6/2(1+2) = ?

The global site styles / images / etc. are in 'common/static'.

I will be mighty busy with the TV part of my job this month, but after things settle, I'll take a look.

The site itself doesn't actually use LESS though - the files are pre-compiled. I just pulled them (without any modifications) from bootswatch IIRC.
So you can get the original LESS files there.

Cool
I tend to do the same, and then just tack on custom CSS on top where needed.

12:15 AM
We are, of course, using the United theme :P

Can I also move elements around using this method?

@RolandiXor Yeah, that's what I've done for my own website. Just add a few additions in a CSS file to tweak things a bit.

Like for example, if I want images to be centred.

@RolandiXor To a very small degree, yes. Generally, no.

Oh okay.

12:15 AM
@RolandiXor Oh, that can be done with CSS, yes.

If necessary, I'll look into what is required and make any changes carefully.

If the image is a block-level element:
margin: auto;
Otherwise, use text-align: center; in its parent element.

or webkitboxblablabla (forgot the thingy).

@RolandiXor Oh, you mean the styles with vendor prefixes? :P

BTW the reason I'm asking so many questions is cause I don't know how Django manages all this :)

12:17 AM
Like --moz-box-model, for example.

(The CSS/HTML - I get :P)

Oh, I see what you mean.

@LuisAlvarado 9 unless you mean 6/(2(1+2)) (be careful with some calculators they don't do the order right)

What you're referring to are the template files.
Each app has a templates/ directory in addition to a static/ directory.

@mateo_salta Correct. Be careful with some people, they don't do PEMDAS right ^^.

12:18 AM
The templates use a special language specific to Django but it's a lot simpler than Python.
It's basically HTML with some special tags thrown in.

@LuisAlvarado did I do it wrong? ehh, math class was too long ago.

@NathanOsman oh that sounds easy.

@mateo_salta no no. You are correct.

Example:
{% block element %}
    <div class="something">Hi, I'm an element!</div>
{% element %}

I've taken a peek at those before - but that was months ago lol
@NathanOsman Ahh.

12:20 AM
Django does a terrific job of separating the application code from the view (the page markup).

indeed
Oh btw, I might have to leave home soon,
so,
I'll show you guys some stuff I did for Mission : Illumination - in a rush :P

Okay.

All made with open source software from the bottom up :)!

The logo in the first image (to the left) is just... so... awesome.

lol the last one

12:23 AM
I like the logo in the first @RolandiXor

Inkscape for the text + logos, and Blender for 3D objects of course.
@NathanOsman :D yes, only sad thing is - they are the most evil people... ever!

Make them give up their creative graphic designers :P

lol
@LuisAlvarado :D

@LuisAlvarado Hey

@IanCarroll hey ok did you see the images?

12:28 AM
Yeah

Okay guys I gotta run!
They are coming for me :O!

It dosen't show the HDD, just the live USB.

@RolandiXor take care

Tell my children I love them! They haven't come along yet, but uh... yeah. Tell them that.

Run!

12:29 AM
hehe
@IanCarroll are you able to change the Sata cables of the drives?

Nope, the cables are fixated into position so the hard drive can slide into the bay.
The HDD boots fine, but it's 32-bit

a ok yeah you told me it was a rack
@IanCarroll Is this case similar to your hardware specs - en.community.dell.com/support-forums/servers/f/956/t/…

Not really
1) The OS has successfully been installed, and the BIOS can find the HDD

but the installer can not

2) The OS will boot on the HDD, I need to make it 64 bit
I suspect that the installer's ignoring this for some reason

12:43 AM
aren't there separate downloads for 32 and 64?

Yep

might be a bug, or maybe something the Bios needs to change in order for the OS installer to see it, I wonder did you try the 32 Bit version also?

or is this about something different...

I'm a tad embarrassed to say this as a sysadmin...
but I, being sleepy, decided that amd64 only worked on AMD chips
and that i386 only worked on intel chips

12:45 AM
I don't blame you - it's confusing.

@IanCarroll don't worry, If I told you the stuff that has happened to me, you would say I don't know anything about Ubuntu or computers.

Intel originally developed the x86 instruction set (which is basically what the i386 represents).

Yeah
Ian wants x86_64

Then AMD developed the x86_64 instruction set and licensed it to Intel (after Intel licensed the x86 instruction set to AMD).

Yeah. Java doesn't support 2GB+ RAM instances without 64 bit

12:47 AM
Basically both companies have Mutual Assured Destruction :)

There is also some other one right? which is why they stuck with the names, instead of simplifying to just 32 and 64.

effectively result in the complete, utter and irrevocable annihilation of both the attacker (Intel) and the defender (AMD)
XD
so
Any ideas on how to do this?
For ref, this is a SATA Dell F1C server
Luckily, this is one of the most non-documented servers in the universe

@IanCarroll just noticed the part about really being the most non-documented one

Yeah

Q: delete file with name --help.tgz

capolucaI have file with name --help.tgz. I want to delete but don't know how. I tried rm "--help.tgz", rm \-\-help.tgz and it did not work. How can I delete a file with such name?

1:01 AM
@IanCarroll While we try to help you, you should file this as a Bug. You might not be the only one with this case.

1:12 AM
Ok
Launchpad, right?

@IanCarroll yeap. Let me see in what section

Well that was not tough launchpad.net/ubuntu

could not find an specific server only option

1:17 AM
*bugs.launchpad.net
"Microsoft has a majority market share in the new desktop PC marketplace. This is a bug..."

Yeah. Am suffering from that bug too
It's horrible! ^^

I know! It haunts everyone
I have a question related to linux
Who would pay for RHEL Desktop???!!!

people that need support from the same company I guess. Am actually amazed.
Between the cloud, juju, ubuntu server and the whole speed process it's having, I would not get off Ubuntu for RHEL any time soon.

Is "ranting about other Linux/*nix distributions" on topic?
:P

1 hour later…
2:23 AM
@IanCarroll Of course :P
@jokerdino I am starting a UTT answer to How can I configure Unity. I don't know whether @fossfreedom has started one or not...

1 hour later…
3:32 AM
@JorgeCastro Here atm?

I asked this question a couple of days ago:

Q: using the home directory for partitioning

JohnMerlinoMy understanding of disc partitioning has always been that you partition a disc to install multiple operating systems so you can boot from multiple operating systems on a single disc. However I'm reading a ubuntu server book and it talks about partitioning the /home directory of a ubuntu installa...

OK?
Did that answer answer your question?

still a ltitle confused about something. Lets say I install the entire ubuntu os on an ext4 filesystem on a partition on my hard drive.

Alright.

Now what the book appears to suggest is that you can install the /home folder in a separate partition on the hard drive.
if thats the case, then what is the /home folder in the other partition doing?
is there some kind of symlink between partitions

3:45 AM
@JohnMerlino There would be only one /home. The one on the separate partition.
@JohnMerlino Good question. I'm not sure myself as I've never used a separate /home.

and that is specified during the ubuntu installation process? I dont recall being given that option.

I'm afraid I don't know ;)
I think I do know someone who can answer your question though. He's not here at the moment.
@Takkat --^

when I installed Ubuntu 12.04 it says "we detected you have windows 7 os, do you want ubuntu installed on a separate partition?" And then there is a custom option but what that custom option does is allow you to specify which partition to install ubuntu os, not a particular folder.

Just a sec.
OK, I can't find a question about it on the site.
I myself don't have an answer unfortunately.

so launchpad tells me that e17 is build number 0.16sdfASFsdfs for precise but .... what version of e17 is that?
do the launchpad ubuntu repos have version 2.0 of e17 yet? I think the latest is 2.0 right

3:59 AM
I really don't know.

4 hours later…
7:49 AM
@Seth wrote something to the Q ;)

8:14 AM
Takky :-D
I could not sleep last night so I started coding in python :=D

8:41 AM
@Seth feel free to add an answer ... I'm a little snowed under at the moment with other stuff so I dont have enough time to make a great answer that I'm sure you'll be able to do even better :)

8:57 AM
@Rinzwind coding does not help as it finally makes you sleepless :P

9:35 AM
sighs - so many questions of the like: "I won't tell you what but why does it not work?"

fossfreedom: I'm here to talk about cleaning up askubuntu.com/questions/163184/…

hi ... step by step - I dont see the association with your answer and the "master" - askubuntu.com/questions/208146/…

What do you mean by "master"?

This one you've linked to askubuntu.com/questions/163184/…

Same symptom. He has the same message in motd that won't go away

9:57 AM
@Rinzwind - do you concur? if so we should merge these.

He did accept a different answer, maybe his situation was different, but I doubt it.

ho I missed something? concurwith who?
and by default I follow you >:D
here a dupe:

Q: Different Wallpaper per Workspace - Ubuntu 12.10

VardonirUbuntu newbie here. I want a different wallpaper for each workspace. I tried CCSM and gconf-editor, and neither worked. And Compiz seems to crash on occasion. I'm using Ubuntu 12.10, and I can't find a single tutorial for 12.10 specifically.

one thing at a time ... too early in the morning to do several things at once...

tskl

9:59 AM
I already coded a program in python today and the last time I did that was in '08

... there are several similar

there are 10 questions that mention "will be checked for errors at next reboot". At least five of them are asking the same thing

merge'm :D

@Rinzwind I will ... if you are serious with that reply.

I've been going through them and answering them with the solution that worked for me, and then flagging them as duplicate of the one with the solution that worked

10:02 AM
well the 2 I saw are basically the same... heck: the linking IS proof they ARE.

That link was what I created
which is what fossfreedom is asking about, is it appropriate?

Well... basically you are saying "look I found a dupe"

soooo 2 options: close'm or merge'm

some of them have other answers that are accepted, so its not completely clear that they are dupes.
which is why I was adding another answer

10:05 AM
glad I am not a mod
6

@StephenOstermiller - my thoughts on that is that perhaps an edit to the accepted answer linking to the other would perhaps be more appropriate than a copy & paste answer.

hmmm

except that the accepted answer in the case you were talking about is completely different
its talking about fstab options and forcefsck
which is what I'd tried to solve the problem for a long time
without success

@StephenOstermiller ... so then the copy and paste answer is perhaps not a good fit with the question asked?

I believe that the copy and paste answer is the correct solution to the problem
regardless of whether a bad answer had been accepted

10:08 AM
well merging would mean someone could un-accept the bad answer(if it is bad ;-))

yes
(I would assume)

merging will indeed unaccept an answer

I bet fossy is happy I only post dupes >:-D
or spam

spam is nice ... can eat spam all day

I have not seen Miss June the last few days :(

10:10 AM
Miss June is probably playing cricket :P

London marathon <3
a wheelchair dude ran over a female runner at a drinking post :-X

ok ... serious now ... I'm going to have a close look Stephen with your answers - if appropriate I will either merge the whole question or I'll edit the accepted answer with a link to the "master" - in that way you'll have one answer to maintain rather than several.

I personally don't like it when something is marked as a dupe and it has other answers, none of which are helpful
I google something and I land on it, then I have to decide whether the answers on it are the ones that I should pay attention to, or where I need to look at the dup.

I would still mark it as a dupe; but then someone also needs to insert a good answer >:)

which is why I was answering in multiple places

10:15 AM
I'll do my best tidying ... bbl

bbl need to watch Hunter x Hunter and Shingeki no Kyojin

good luck. :-)

Q: "Ask question" left border visible on main site

green7I've been noticing this for the last few days, and it seems like a bug. Here is what the link currently looks like: Notice the dark purple colored left border which shouldn't be visible. Below is the zoomed image: While hovering, the border disappears. There is no such border on meta. ...

11:18 AM
@fossfreedom Thanks @fossfreedom, that looks pretty good. There some answers now that were merged in that don't make sense in this context: askubuntu.com/a/249292/53750 askubuntu.com/a/283821/53750 Can they be deleted? I think they were answering other aspects of merged questions.

@feichinger @Rinzwind hahaha you took too long >o<''

@fossfreedom Looking at askubuntu.com/q/208146/102029 the asker is asking about the motd bug but adds his system is not shutting down cleanly. He then comments after rebooting has noticed the motd bug is not an issue. unsalvagable through editing = ask another question? or just change the title?

@Mochan YOU!

Hey guys
know of any not too expensive ADSL routers with white listing?

@geezanansa probably content to leave as is ... unless you have a better suggestion for the title to reflect the final outcome?
@StephenOstermiller agreed - tidied.

@fossfreedom Suppose asker asked a question and got an answer which was accepted = leave as is

agreed

When should I change a question to a wiki ?

Make a post a wiki if: A) You want people to be able to edit it easily at any point in time or B) You deem it unethical to receive reputation for it.

@FEichinger aha, thanks

@fossfreedom I'll try :)
@geezanansa Yes I saw most of those, but didn't find a good Q/A on how to set it up during installation. it might be simpler than I thought.. I'll find out soon ;) (help link looks great).

5:31 PM
Can anyone upload a picture? It's not working for me...

oops Works for me

Lemme try again.
Works now.... (@FEichinger --^ maybe.. if you want)

Q: What is the proper procedure when dealing with posts written in other languages?

NilFirstly, let me point out that there is some mention of the top on this post. But I am still confused on how to deal with some of these posts. It's assumed that the community will handle the situation appropriately, but I see conflicting actions taken in incidents involving non-English posters. ...

5:49 PM
@FEichinger IKR XD
He actually got me a deputy badge on MSO.
Don't submit that one, just thought someone might find it funny.
(Yes, I'm going through all my files...)
@FEichinger You can do that one --^

where is my spam?

you scared them away.

Shog fixed it \o/
@FEichinger Last one --^

what shots are these?

Mine. I'm reformatting Windows and upgrading to Raring so I have to go through all my files ;)

6:02 PM
right. fun times

Yep.
I downloaded Ubuntu Gnome via torrent.. There were only 20 seeds :(
Well, I've finished my backup. Hopefully you'll see me next on Raring. hopefully.

There can be issues with the ubiquity. Good luck.

Hey

Hmm, I hope you are not the Carroll I know.

?
If I used boot and nuke, do you think I could re-install Ubuntu?

6:17 PM
no idea.

joker Is this Carroll you speak of older than 13?

@IanCarroll why? Just choose "erase HDD" when ubiquity ask you during the install.

@foss It's either a bug or a little glitch.

@IanCarroll i suppose so

@IanCarroll what bug? Whats the issue?

6:23 PM
Sorry, back
@foss It won't show the HDD so I can overwrite it
However, it boots fine and shows in the BIOS

weird - RAID?

Nope, normal 250GB HDD
although, I'd like an SSD :)

UEFI?

help!!! windows user alert

Nope, normal Dell BIOS
This is a Dell F1C Rack Server, BTW
It's the most undocumented server in the universe, luckily
Almost as bad as the mysterious F1D

6:26 PM
@IanCarroll no its not >:-D

@Rinz Have you found documentation online???!!!

Nope. But we have 1 at our company with documentation so I know where to find it

That's neat

(we got 14 dell's in our own rack and 12 in a datacenter)

Nice
I just buy F1C's for no reason. They're $130 with shipping on eBay

6:28 PM
hmm probably less (some are 2 or more units) :P

Well, I buy them for hosting clients
They are fed up with me ATM :P

yeah we are switching to ibm's :X the hdd fail rate on our dells is way too high

Really?
What HDD?
We're on 7200 Segate's

HEEELLP

OEM though

6:29 PM
this is going to go SOOOO wrong

Q: Directory and File permissions

DavidI recently installed Ubuntu 12.10. I am the only user, and would like to be able to drag files from directory to directory. 1) How can I open up permission to do this? Do I do this from root? 2) Is there a command that I can enter into the terminal? If so, what would an example command be? ...

Perfect answer:
3) You can set privileges on each file to rwx for everybody (which is really dangerous). The commad for this is something like chmod -R 777 run in the /.

that deserves downvoting for just saying that!

Somebody should just edit it out :P

oh man Windows user :-X :-X

See bug 1
bs=1m for the win

Time to potentially screw my dell server

6:35 PM
ah bug 1 <3
MS is doing there best. I want 2 or 3 more bad OSs like W8

@Rinzwind hardware sales drop because of W8 they say... \o/
Nobody wants tiles on their desktops.

@Takkat yeah, people do not want to get rid of the start button so the next update for W8 (8.1) will get it back

lol

BUT hardware sales do no drop due to W8.
otherwise apple would not sell anything

I just quit a web-based OS project because they are going to use Metro
GAH, can't DD mark the stupid drive active for me :\

6:38 PM
people see what desktops are. Compared to a notebook/ultrabook/pad and a large screen a desktop is a big log.
