Back
@Rinzwind For the sake of nothing, I'm chmodding everything to 777 on my VM. XD
proceeds to fire up DigitalOcean VPS
:(
I can't chmod /proc, even as root
root@killitnow:/# ls
-bash: /bin/ls: No such file or directory
I deleted everything in the root dir XD
However, the server has yet to crash

7:33 PM
I take it @rinzwind is back
or not :P

It will crash :=)

Is it best to create the Ubuntu partitions from the LiveCD or from Windows beforehand?

when /etc is 777 or deleted ssh does not work. mysql is dead (/etc/my.cnf) ssh is picky about permissions because you gave public
read access to your private key files.

@Seth best is to have free space on the drive to not accidentally overwrite the wrong partition.

So shrink from Windows, and then create Ubuntu's from the LiveCD?

7:39 PM
Windows can't create an ext4 partition

@Seth best is to not make mistakes ;-)

You can shrink from live CD too - one go.

I am used to gParted so I use that always.

I buy a new drive when I need more space :P

Hmm. I'm more used to Windows Disk Management.

We'll see what happens :)

7:41 PM
@Seth lol - I had a look at it recently... its sorta - weird.

Yes it is.
And old.
It could use a rewrite.

@Seth well if it comes to that I download Partition Magic :D :D (a cracked one)

As soon as you want to create a Linux filesystem you are completely lost on Windows.
They just dont support it.

Yeah I bet.

nathan!! :)

7:43 PM
As you propbably want to partition from a live session anyway I do believe Ubuntu + GParted is the easiest.

yakkk - commands from hell!

#1 is wrongly worded

@Takkat I'll report what I end up doing ;)

rm -rf / probably will stop after it deleted rm
and #7 does not f*** up your system.

7:46 PM
#6 wget http://something_bad_for_you.com :D

Q: Unable to burn ubuntu 12.04 LTS on CD

user151095I have tried many burning the ubuntu 12.04 iso file on to a dvd but it always fails to do so. The windows burner displays an error while burning. No problem with the iso as i have checked its integrity. Please someone suggest an alternative way of installation. i tried installing from a usb but i...

:=)

8:38 PM
@Seth If not using WUBI - which 13.04 does not... because it can not... then make unallocated space using Windows Disk Management. After booting to live cd make your partitions for Ubuntu using the unallocated space.
Which would be root, boot, home and swap if not using the default installer. thingy.

9:03 PM
@Seth this should be helpful for deciding partition sizes help.ubuntu.com/13.04/installation-guide/index.html

Whats the current stance regarding ubuntu+1 questions?

Allowed, unless it's a) very likely to change until release or b) related to the nature of an ubuntu+1 (f.e. "when will the next beta be released?") - afair.
This obviously changes back to what it used to be, once 13.04 is released.

9:20 PM
@FEichinger thx

@guntbert Please do take opportunity to clarify. Basically OT. "This obviously changes back to what it used to be, once 13.04 is released" and the viewing the amount of questions in main and meta may indicate there is no stance!?

Q: Is there a login for humans available?

MarturI have not been visiting askubuntu for a while and was now confronted with OpenID. I will never be able to remember a password from 8 unique digits with upper and lower characters and special characters! I am sure I will ask them to reset my password every time I want to login... Is it possible ...

Q: Is that possible to have account using more than one login options?

Aryo Adhi Wibisono LegopermonoIf you login for first time, you should see alternative options for login instead registering. Is that possible that all of alternatives (OpenID, Facebook, etc) synched to one account?

Lets try. What about

Q: Ubuntu 13.04 Suspend not working

DawdieMy sony vaio VPCEH27FD (E series) will not sleep after I close the lid, it stays on i can hear the fan and hard drive on, when i wake it up sometimes it wont respond and I have to force power off. Please help ;'( I really want to stay on ubuntu.

@FEichinger ^

Usually the stance is "It's off-topic, because it constantly changes and it is unlikely to be helpful in the future (because these versions will never exist again)"

As 13.04 is ubuntu+1? right?

9:23 PM
Shortly prior to a new version, we allow questions on those - because they are now unlikely to change that much, and they're essentially released already.

@guntbert This is an issue that existed before. There is probably both an old Q on it and a bug on Launchpad.
And, in general, it looks like a bug - in that case it's off-topic regardless of version.

@FEichinger thx for the advice - flagged and commented
Also a bug?

Q: Youtube video useless after the last update

Jocky BurnsAfter some updates recently, Youtube videos now run extremely jerkily. Almost like they are swimming in superglue. It also slows my computer down to a speed akin to a snail on diazepam. Running Ubuntu 12.04.01 and using Google Chrome Version 26.0.1410.63. Firefox seems to run videos fine, but it...

Looks like it. But on that one, the question could just be looking for "what causes this?" rather than "how to fix this?", so I, personally, would keep it. Would need an answer along the lines of "apparently there is a bug in Chrome, as reported [here]".
"How to fix {bug}?" is bad. "What causes {problem}?" with answer "It's a bug." is ... well, not good, but should only be closed with a bug report located, if at all.

Can anybody confirm how it could be possible for unity version 7.0 to be running in 12.10? ref askubuntu.com/q/283953/102029

@guntbert Thanks, I was hoping that someone remove my dubt.

Q: Someone please explain why I want to use Ubuntu!?!?!?

Nathaniel S MarvoshStory: I was given a couple old pentium 4 computers so I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on one thinking (this is where i go wrong) it would be "fun" to add a file server to my home network, while I enjoy a challenge this endeavor has just become a joke and a total waste of my weekend. I am not looking ...

@TheLordofTime Maybe give an answer to give examples of how hugely advantageous it is to be using Ubuntu? Make a negative a positive. ? Maybe explaining open source is not free (in cost) as it involves a lot collaboration, time and effort as well as resources which are openly shared. Shift it to meta?

Shifting to meta's not appropriate
meta's about the site
not Ubuntu
you should read the FAQ again

lol just rying to be devils advocate

"You should only ask practical, answerable questions based on actual problems that you face. Chatty, open-ended questions diminish the usefulness of our site and push other questions off the front page."

Why you asking here then? . Get it flagged

i didn't ask.
i siad that because sometimes closevoters are here
if I don't have a ? on the thing, it's a statement.
