9:00 AM
@soandos: chrome has a pretty nice remote access function I use, I can host on windows 7, its fast, but it turns off aero for best performance. I need to set it to deactivate and reactivate aero automatically

@JourneymanGeek, how do you access it?

@soandos: through an app on another chrome system

has a passcode, and is associated with your chrome account, or you can send an invite

@JourneymanGeek, I mean where in chrome is it?

9:02 AM
oh, you need to install that, then its under apps

extension I think.

The link I posted, or something else?

Bob
@soandos have you considered using Windows' bootloader as primary and GRUB as secondary (chainload using bootmgr)? :P

that link

Bob
I don't even know if that works, but EasyBCD has quite a few options for that :S

9:03 AM
@Bob, I think that it works, but I might also involve some windows overhead (its why some people do not like wubi, among other reasons)
honestly, bootloaders are these things that I never really want to see
so long as it works, I don't particularly care

Bob
chainloading GRUB shouldn't have any overhead?

No idea. When I boot into windows (after chkdsk finishes) i'll see if easyBCD can pick up ubuntu

Bob
I always thought Wubi had to mount a virtual filesystem, while chainloading GRUB should be the same as booting directly through it :\
:P

if it can, that would be the best of all worlds
@Bob, that too

Bob
A possible problem with your setup is that you have your bootloader on the same partition as the main OS installation.
You probably could have avoided this mess entirely if you had it on a separate, hidden partition like Windows (and Ubuntu) do by default :P

9:07 AM
@Bob, the OS partitions all move. That is guaranteed to mess up bootloaders
and my primary OS is going to be all of win7,win8,ubuntu
now to see if easyBCD can work its magic

Bob
:P
I just realised EasyBCD is full of options for adding new boot entries

yup
any chance you remember where the one to add grub is?

Bob
Visual BCD Editor still wins when it comes to modifying existing and hidden ones, though
Add new entry on the left
Linux/BSD tab

For some reason I did not see that
thanks

Bob
Hm.. I never noticed, but Visual BCD Editor can also add a Linux/BSD entry

9:13 AM
Now to make sure that all three OSes can boot
Ubuntu is good

Wubi? don't use that ugly beast.

Windows 1 is good
@jokerdino, I couldn't even if I wanted to ;)

it's been particularly buggy recently.

Why is it not possible to install Ubuntu from windows properly (set up a partition, etc)?

you always needed a cd of sorts to install separately.

9:17 AM
Why though?
(windows 2 is good)

not particularly sure. you could only install a Wubi inside Windows.

I mean, why doesn't someone create a new program that will install Ubuntu from windows without a boot disk

Bob
@soandos Perhaps not many have enough unpartitioned space..

someone might do in the future.

Bob
They would also need to have ext drivers for Windows, I guess?

9:19 AM
that too.
Windows doesn't properly support ext partitions IIRC

@Bob, the drivers can come with the program, and the space issue can be solved the way that is now with a ubuntu install disk
show a graphic, etc
windows can repartition

At this rate we'll own the entire sidebar

Just a couple more. Almost there.

Bob
9:22 AM
@soandos I didn't know there were any good ext drivers for Windows :P
@soandos Yes, yes.. but you can't do it from within Windows, as you well know :P

What do you do when someone trolls Ubuntu too much?

@Bob, they don't need to be that robust, they are basically one use only. And the partitioning is supposed to be doable from within windows, it just messed up with me :P
@jokerdino /dev/ignore?

Q: Using Ubuntu isn't worth it for me, Windows works best.

user72475Welcome to Ubuntu and the lack of support( 12.04 LOS ). If I say Ubuntu 12.04 is a so so broken OS, I will get flamed. But if I ask for help, I can here the crickets chirruping. @soandos haha that might possibly work ;)

@jokerdino, who created that tag?
and just delete the question

i think it just got created.

9:25 AM
he had 1 rep, he can't do that

the editor did. probably.

yup, lol

Bob
Why create a tag for this? :\

having fun I suppose ;)
funny finally it got closed.

I was going to say

@jokerdino no

anyhow, I unpinned the older one, since that's decided now
oh. ivo already pinned it. oops.

Right. Let me suggest changes.

Further suggestions should go as answers, feel free to use CW as you see fit.

Almost as good as our tag , for feature requests that get ignored indefinitely

@IvoFlipse did... that exist?

Oh right :P

@nhinkle It does in AU atm.

That is funny.

@soandos I appreciate AU appearing in the proposed FAQ.

That's the point @jokerdino, we're not out to overrule our sister-sites
We're one big family and we love them all :)
Except that bully SO, which gave us a lot of crap when we were young, but he's starting to come by now that he's getting more mature

Spread the love and the unicorns!

lol
@IvoFlipse: I think we're gradually getting over the send EVERYTHING over to SU mentality

You guys should thank Programmers for that.

@jokerdino: and better inter site communication

and perhaps, the "don't migrate crap" rule.

9:43 AM
Thats been implicitly in place for quite a while

@iglvx why do they think so...................

/dev/ignore for the win!

@jokerdino, the don't migrate crap rule should go under vote to close privileges, not the FAQ

Good point. It could also be listed when you are casting close votes.

It also occurs to me that the close vote for off topic will also have to be changed to include home networking (this should be done now, as that is currently part of the FAQ)

someone wants to install packages on an old version of Ubuntu :\
@jokerdino you got any expertise here? :P

depends on whether they want a new package or just install the package.

Q: Unable to install software on Ubuntu 8.04

mathematician1975I have recently installed 8.04 Ubuntu onto an industrial board and applied the vendor kernel modifications to it. I need to develop applications on another desktop to run on this board in C++ but I am unable to install any software (specifically build-essential) on it so I am left with gcc 4.2.4 ...

Just upgrade to the latest version really.
It's a pain using 8.04.

Bob
lol

ask him to follow this instructions, modify properly and upgrade to 12.04. askubuntu.com/questions/22265/…

Bob
10:22 AM
probably best if you tell him :P
I know nothing about Ubuntu besides how to mess it up every few days

heh :P

Bob
One of my most visited sites is one on resolving broken dependencies :\

I've never had dependency problems with ubuntu :D lucky i guess

If you haven't broken your dependencies, you haven't been adventurous :p

Bob
Adventurous? All I try to do is update my packages :\

10:25 AM
it won't break that way would it?
it only breaks if you mess up the architecture, install third party debs etc.
@jokerdino The installation is made onto a compact flash card that is acting as a hard drive on the board. Thus far using ubuntu installation discs 8.04 is the only version that installs successfully. Also according to the vendor the board only supports up to 10.04 version of ubuntu. — mathematician1975 2 mins ago
He also needs to upgrade the hardware then.

Bob
@jokerdino Or use the GUI software centre things
they always break something :P

It never happened to me that way.
this guy has complications further than the software issue.

Q: Not able to copy or delete items form pen drive

Tanveer AhmadWhen I want to download any file from Internet and try to transfer it to my pen Drive I'm unable to do so. Also I'm not able to delete the files form the pen drive as well.

Bob
That's a nice solution for the help files.
@avirk Slight mistake
Not able to copy to would be more appropriate; i.e. he's having issues writing to it.

@Bob mistake?

Bob
@avirk Your title edit..
I would go with "Not able to copy to or delete items from pen drive"

@Bob ah yes that is
BTW nice program of autoshutdown.

Can you tell me how can I check hardware brand, ID etc through C#

Q: Can I extend my total RAM by buying more, and what kind do I need to buy

Xeon06I currently have 4 GB total RAM and I would like to get some more, to bring it to a total of 8 GB. Is it possible to simply buy another 4 GB and bring it to 8? If so, what kind should I be buying? There is a lot of different possibilities, DDR3, DDR2, clock speed, etc. I am kind of lost among all...

@JourneymanGeek @Bob vtc

3:03 PM
> Note that I am not looking for shopping recommendations. I'm worried about the hardware compatibility.
:\
The question doesn't read as looking for recommendations either
This is a somewhat localised question, but.. I dunno :P
I wonder if anyone has enough time to write a canonical answer/blog post about RAM? :P

hmm
superuser.com/questions/376784/… closest thing to that i can find. Might be a good starting point
@avirk: please use the VTC room

@Bob check out this

A: Can I extend my total RAM by buying more, and what kind do I need to buy

avirkNewer DDR2 and DDR3 modules are physically incompatible due to the notch being in a different location:

3:19 PM
@avirk: why would you VTC and answer?
and that dosen't seem a bad question since he has an anomoly - his system is DDR2, cpu-z reports ddr-3

> Note that I am not looking for shopping recommendations. I'm worried about the hardware compatibility.

I almost said cpu-z is on crack, but i didn't want to offend anyone

Bob
@JourneymanGeek But the RAM part number matches DDR3..

@JourneymanGeek have you won the bounty
@JourneymanGeek have you won the bounty

It doesn't help that I can't find the motherboard specs anywhere :\

3:27 PM
@Bob ACER EG43M mainboard

Bob
@avirk can't find specs for that!
Gah
It's a Gigabyte one
bloody OEMs rebranding their motherboards
It may well be DDR3

@Bob lol

Bob
running something like memtest is a nice way of verifying SPD data

@avirk: One of my suggestions didn't work, the other one i don't know yet
@Bob: the rest of the features don't make sense, hence my recommendation of a memory scanner, looking at the physical characteristics of the chips, and the slik screening

Bob
@JourneymanGeek you did? refreshes page
@JourneymanGeek the chips are often labelled with a model/part number that can be looked up too
@JourneymanGeek The Intel G45 chipset apparently has DDR3-1066 support
and also DDR2 backwards compatibility

3:35 PM
lol
i looked that up MOMENTS before and added it to my answer.

Bob
Of course, this might be the G43
his CPU-Z results say G43/G45

CPU-Z isn't on crack i suppose
still
physical inspection would solve the issue

Bob
lol
true
hm
well
Intel has their own board with a G43 and DDR3
the only one I could find, but that's good enough :P

Bob
3:57 PM
@JourneymanGeek what the...
I can't imagine using anywhere near that much
I have a powered 7 port hub, and it's unused most of the time. Heck, the only reason I use it is because my front USB ports are unstable with any real power draw

According to our records, you have registered yourself on http://whatpulse.org on 2006-09-21. Unfortunatly, our records also show that you have not pulsed since 2007-08-02 12:05:26.

WhatPulse accounts expire when they have not been used for 24 months.
Obviously, the term "24 months" is quite flexible.

Bob
lol
hm
with GitHub, what's the difference between HTTPS and SSH mode?
Would I be able to use tokens rather than having to type my username/password every push?

4:14 PM
BTW guys, in case you didn't know. Don't try to use 3TB drives with Windows Server Backup.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg ?

@Bob It's not supported.

Bob
Not that I have any 3TB drives, nor any copies of Windows Server, but why not? :P
oh

Also, you can't backup volumes larger than 2TB :P

Bob
o.O
Is this a MBR/GPT issue, some artificial limit, or just something weird?

4:16 PM
@Bob It has to do with the block size or something like that

Bob
ah

3TB drives can only be that large because they use 4096
And that is a problem for Windows Backup somehow.
It's mind-boggling
The server threw all kinds of errors at me. First, because I wanted to backup a 4TB volume and only 2TB max is supported.
Then I told it to backup the volume contents, which works
But it kept stopping the backup due to some weird VSS errors.
So my co-worker looked some stuff up on the net and found out about the 3TB Windows Backup dilemma.

Bob
:\

So I went back to the store, returned the 2 3TB drives I got an hour earlier and got 2 2TB drives instead.

Bob
this is where you start using third party backup software :P

4:19 PM
Plugged them in, reset the backup, and, voila, works.

Bob
I don't trust Windows backup anymore

Neither do we.
We never planned on using it.
But this years budget did not allow us to implement the backup solution we want.

Bob
My system image and all my backups over the past year mysteriously disappeared (disk space still taken) after my failure to boot a month ago...

Next year...

Bob
:\
lol

4:20 PM
Then we'll use Data Protection Manager, most likely.

Bob
how much does that cost?

That's the whole 3TB drive story, if I'm not mistaken.

Bob
:\

And, some if( disk.sector.size > 512 ) alert( "This disk sucks!" ); would have been real nice!

Bob
Even better, a warning when formatting, hmm? :P

4:25 PM
@Bob Well, part of the processing of it becoming a backup volume is a format process. So, yeah :D

@OliverSalzburg look up 'Cobian Backup' or something like that
freeware and quite good

Bob
massive wall of text
he's also posted this twice

no shadow copy, but way better than windows backup

Bob
Oh, it's been deleted already :P
@mods work fast!

4:28 PM
@HaydnWVN That's kind of a contradiction in itself :D

lol, shadowcopy is full of problems
we actually replicate a server here rather than using it
then backup the copy

You think I'm gonna install my client some freeware app without support to backup his enterprise?
That's simply not an option unless I would live next door.
Don't get me wrong, after today, my opinion about Windows Server Backup isn't the best either ;D

The amount of problems with windows backup through the years (NT4 onwards) i'd never consider using it
"some freeware app with no support" is a better option lol
heard of some of the issues with the built in windows 7 one?
1TB volumes taking more than 24 hours due to some file check and the backups never completing as the schedule doesn't end the previous before attempting to start the next?

We never planned to use this solution at all, so I'm not really happy about it either :D

talk about idiotic
i always loved seagate backup exec
not even sure who owns it anymore
one of those great bits of software that got bought out and passed around so much it got ruined :(
OMG I WANT!
hometime now anyways, cya next week :)
have a good weekend o/

Bob
4:46 PM
@HaydnWVN cough see above, disappearing backups cough
@HaydnWVN And then there's the backups just randomly failing for no apparent reason, even for relatively minuscule amounts of data...

anybody know how to do strike through in markdown?
nvm... just used <strike></strike>

superuser.com/q/440338/79358 What could I missing on my explanation to have less votes that the other 2-lines question??!?!?!?!

@Diogo, people are silly

I like both answers
One if a good summary the other provides the details. Don't understand the vote difference though.

I understand this that I don't need to explain or detail anything when answering...
Just type a few words without details or explanations and people will like it...

You're oversimplifying
He answered the question fully in 2 sentences and he is correct.

Yeah, brevity is a virtue.
They're both good answers, but his is way easier to read.

7:07 PM
So, everyone who find this question on google and open to see it will understand what is being exchanged?? I mean, everytime I answer a question I think on another people than only who are questioning...

That's why it's still a good answer, and certainly deserves to be on that question

not everyone will understand why the constant 7200rpm have to do with unconstant performance...

And those people will upvote your answer :)

k k.... I understand..... but again... I think answers here would give all details as possible due to people that don't understad exactly all the technical reasons involved...
Its my point of view.... by the way, it looks like people don't have the same view...
