12:21 AM
Morning gentlemen
(and ladies. And anything else i might have missed)

12:44 AM
ooh
I was looking at this, kernelhacks.blogspot.sg/2012/06/arch-linux-on-wm8650-netbook.html . Looking at what i think is the vendor page, i think he might have actually paid that much for the lot of crappy netbooks
erg. mucked up the link

3 hours later…
3:24 AM
@JourneymanGeek Vendor? You mean manufacturer of these notebooks? Oh yeah, 256MB of RAM, 800MHz processor and 2GB NAND storage seems to be very weak.

@Borisyo: but if he paid 60 bucks for 5 of them? they're pretty cheap for a tenner a piece

@JourneymanGeek if I build a system here in the US with US parts, will I have to worry about different voltages, say in Europe?

er
only the PSU
and those usually switch

oh? how does that work?

but thats about the only thing you need to worry about

3:30 AM
for example, my cousin is building a system and is using this PSU:

either its a fixed voltage PSU (in which case you need to switch) a switch mode PSU (which dosen't give a crap), or it has a little switch for changing the voltage

ahhhh, okay
> How about the ability to auto-sense your input voltage from 90Vac to 264Vac, 50/60Hz?

@studiohack studiohack! haven't seen you in forever!

look at specifications - input voltage
it should be fine

@KronoS KRONOS!! :D

3:31 AM
how ya been?

@JourneymanGeek so the Corsair 650TX works fine in Europe?

it would

@KronoS I've been busy! working a lot (archaeology - hiking, etc)
how about you?

archaeology (o_O) didn't know you were doing that...
I've been good. just working at my internship mostly

@KronoS - my future degree is still IT/IS but that's my summer job... my 4th year, so I know quite a bit about native american archaeology :P

3:33 AM
@studiohack: also, with that range, it would deal with under-overvoltages i suspect

@JourneymanGeek really?

yup
the range is wider than the common voltages i know of

I'm not sure if my cousin has the 650TX Enthusiast or such...

lowest common house voltage is 110, highest is 250

@studiohack that's pretty cool

3:34 AM
@studiohack: it should be on the label

@KronoS yeah... pretty dry subject :P

no pun intended eh ;)

@KronoS hahahaha good one! I didn't even think of that lol
thanks man! yeah I enjoy landscape photography
@JourneymanGeek found the exact PSU:
> The universal AC input from 90~264V offers maximum applicability and flexibility, eliminating the hassle of flipping that tiny red switch to select the voltage input!
So it looks like it will work in europe... thanks! (my cousin wanted to know - doesn't have enough rep to chat)
@KronoS yeah... it is a lot of fun! If you ever visit where I live or the state above me - swing by! :)
or if I come your way

ya for sure!
in fact... i might be up that way... but maybe not... I get you and @nhinkle mixed up on locations...

@KronoS Remember what state the avatar is?
By the way, this a guide to visiting stuff in WY, especially if you drive in from the east (which doesn't apply to you, IIRC) - you're in AZ

A: Thinking about a road trip out West

studiohackI recommend visiting Yellowstone National Park (and Grand Teton National Park - they border each other and for $20 USD, you get a 1 week pass to both parks!). Here's what I recommend: Take Interstate 90 across South Dakota (or go up through Wisconsin/North Dakota, then drop - much more scen...

@KronoS are you interning for MS or what?

3:51 AM
@studiohack sorry had to go away for a sec. yes I do.
@studiohack that's correct

@KronoS so are you still confused as to which way you might be? MS is in WA, of course

@studiohack no with a company called performance software
are we not fakebook friends @studiohack?
I'm going to have to fix this...

@KronoS ohhh yes! headsmack you told me about that
@KronoS check fb

Hello, can i ask a question?
0
Q: Does upgrading RAM also upgrades Graphics memory?

Anwar ShahI have asked this question on Ask Ubuntu, and I was suggested to Upgrade RAM from most voted answers. But I got a point about my graphics card. Since, I can upgrade RAM and not graphics card, Does upgrading RAM also cause graphics memory to increase. To clear the point: My specs are given below:...

4:51 AM
@AnwarShah you asked it well but still you have any doubt you can see FAQ section.

Hi, just a really quick question: Why does this jsfiddle not work? jsfiddle.net/cnPKX

does that help?
and this probably isn't the best chat to to look on
that's probably better @KevinDuke

5:07 AM
thanks kronos

@KevinDuke np

5:24 AM
Anyone have any experience with "master file table has been corrupted, chkdsk aborted" errors?
occured due to an incomplete partition resize

@soandos not yet, but you can tell us from the beginning

@avirk I tried to resize my disk at boot time using Acronis disk director. It booted into it just fine, started the resize, then blackscreened. After waiting a bit (this was probably a mistake) i retarted the machine. The windows partition was then gone. Attempting to run chkdsk from a recovery disk gave the above error message

@soandos that doesn't sound good

Have you tried testdisk/

@Sathya, yeah. @avirk I am trying testdisk now, but to be honest, I have no idea what options I should be using
The thing is, I know all the data is still there

5:33 AM
never been in that boat, @soandos

First time for me too.

@soandos step by step testdisk
FAQ of testdisk

@avirk, thanks

@AnwarShah for what?

@avirk, your last comment to me

5:39 AM
@AnwarShah Ah! I c np buddy.
@Sathya check vtc section.

@avirk, running deep search now.

@soandos Hmmm. Running it prior or Quick search shows nothing

@avirk, there is a good list from when I click analyse (urrent partition structure) but after I click quick search I seem to lose some partitions

@Sathya, thanks for the answer. How do i know, whether i have GMA 3000 or GMA X3000.

@soandos keep searching it works good

5:46 AM
@Sathya probably i have X3100 electronics4india.in/2011/08/…

@avirk having some trouble picking the right structure, one minute
The structure only appears OK if my windows partition has a deleted flag
Is that potnetially correct, or will it delete that partition if I continue

@soandos Screen shot please?

@soandos looks like it's marked as deleted/will be deleted
try making the fat32 as primary bootable?

@Sathya, yeah that is the issue. And when I try and select the config in the second pic, it tells me its a bad structure

@AnwarShah yea looks so

5:54 AM
@Sathya Still no good

@Sathya, can we conclude then it may increase graphics memory?

This is the other valid config (though it is also bad for other reasons)

@soandos seems strange no "Write" option which recover the partition table.

@AnwarShah it might but doing so is pointless. More graphics memory doesn't mean better performance

@avirk, the write option is later

5:57 AM
heading to a meeting, back later

@Sathya, good luck

@Sathya Good luck

@soandos heh, you'll need it more than I do :D

@Sathya, thanks

@soandos proceed next with logical or extended.
and see what happen

6:00 AM
@avirk, what is logical or extended?

thats not an option, its a 'legend' telling you what the letters mean

@JourneymanGeek going to ping you now
master of testdisk

why? ;p

@JourneymanGeek, having an issue

naw, i'm just vaguely familiar with it
hasn't needed it in ages

6:03 AM
How can I recover a partition using it?

@soandos he has good experience with it and will help you sure

have you read the walkthrough?
ahh

yes, but I am not sure what I should be doing at/during the quick search stages

gimme a sec while i get up to speed on the issue

k, thanks

6:05 AM
oh, just go to the next stage
unless your partition is totally not found

no matter what is says?
(i am seeing 3 deleted, and one primary which the linux swap)

Well, thats what i normally do. It won't do anything until the last stage

got it
now it only shows the swap partition
I do a deeper search?

got it

6:07 AM
generally if anything bad happened, deeper search is needed

and now, I wait
after this what happens?

if it dosen't find the partitions you are missing, nothing.
if it does, then go on

The first list had all the partitions

I just could not progress without marking one as deleted
ok

6:09 AM
ugh. you did deeper when it found the partitions on the shallow scan?
is out of touch

I can always stop it
but yes, it found all of the partitions in the quick

@slhck Morning
Good morning to the rest as well ;)

i seem to recall you can recover off the shallow scan

my problem is it won't accept the structure unless I mark some partutions as deleted
If it did, then I would be set

@OliverSalzburg morning
@soandos copy the data and delete it if no other option is there.

6:21 AM
How can I copy the data if the MFT is toast

why not delete the swap partition?

hm.
I am forgetting something

@JourneymanGeek, will not help. Still is a bad structure

what partitions did you mess with?
What tools and OS?

@OliverSalzburg Morning! Have I been shown online? Just curious :P At that point, I was still sleeping …

@slhck I saw your avatar flying in

Haha, weird!

6:27 AM
ok. I had one situation where testdisk and chkdsk on windows 7 didn't work
my windows xp partition fixed it right up

Must have been the bird gravatar flying in.

@OliverSalzburg lol
@slhck and typing in your dream lol

@JourneymanGeek Using what?

@avirk Probably! I'm sleepwalking in order to visit Super User :P

@slhck lol

6:30 AM
@soandos: the xp version of chkldsk
I have NO idea why it worked

Any idea where I can get a copy?
(deep scan is at 15% and found a partition that I did not know about)

well, you;d need an XP cd to run it, presumably

I think I still have one lying around, but ill have to see

should be finished in 2 hours

6:35 AM
Give me the link of you worst answer if you can
@soandos recovery is not so easy

Wait wait wait. @Kronos you got the MS internship? Why didn't you tell me!
I was at Microsoft literally this Monday. We could've said hi!

@avirk, im just hoping here
If this does not work, im posting a question with a 500 rep bounty as soon as possible

@soandos You will eligible to set bounty after 2 days of posting the question.
BTW I don't think it will disappoint you.

@avirk i know (been here a while...)

@avirk Heh! If I thought I had a really bad answer I'd already have deleted it now. Although there are some particularly short ones from a long time ago >_>

So, I guess I missed my chance on that . Damn :D

6:47 AM
@nhinkle damn. mind goes into overdrive he had said no -

@OliverSalzburg you can always make it better

3 hours ago, by KronoS
@studiohack no with a company called performance software

@nhinkle I realized it might be a Taxonomist candidate ;)

@Sathya IDK, I'm confused now.

@nhinkle "that's correct" is for "are you in AZ?"

6:48 AM
And I want that badge! :D

Ah, well that explains that then. Sorry, folks.
Well that's weird because Arizona is neither particularly near where I am nor where studiohack is.
ok now I understand.

surprise of surprise, studio no longer leads the "leaderboard" for the month

@Sathya which one? /admin?

@nhinkle yep

Q: What is the correct term for the mouse pointer/nipple/joystick thingy in the middle of a laptop's keyboard?

Doug T.I want to call it a "mouse nipple" or maybe a "joystick" although I know these are not correct. Its different from the touchpad which is below the keyboard and has dedicated click buttons. Instead this sits smack in the middle of the keyboard at the bottom right corner of the G and bottom left co...

Q: What is the difference between Windows 8 Pro and Windows RT?

gsharpI was reading the specs about MS Surface and saw that there are two Models offered. One with Windows RT and one with Windows 8 Pro. I'm wondering what's the difference between those two OS?

@avirk thank you! I had been planning on writing something like that anyhow, but he asked the question before I got around to it.

@nhinkle you mean blog......You should

No, it was going to be a self-answer Q&A. style.

I really hate to have to pass on a question when at a clients office :D

@OliverSalzburg and when you have answer ;P

7:09 AM
@Sathya that avg flag resolution time is pretty good these days

@avirk Well, yeah. I don't feel the same way when I have no clue ;D

@OliverSalzburg lol

And... the first VM is fully recovered \o/
Awesome

@OliverSalzburg congrates

@avirk This is a horrible case. Multiple hardware failures in a Hyper-V host.
Leading to data corruption and whatnot

A: Turn firefox window dark when out of focus

iglvzxIf you have a dark wallpaper and there are no windows behind the Firefox window, you can use AutoHotkey to make the window transparent when it loses focus, and opaque when it gains focus. I've come up with a simple script that should also be light on resources: SetTitleMatchMode, RegEx Firefox ...

I should start using AutoHotKey for real, at least now I know how to program, so I should be able to do something interesting

@iglvzx I've seen that and 1st +1 was mine ;P

@avirk Thank you.

@iglvzx ah no need of that +1 for the good answer.
@OliverSalzburg hmmmmm so get back the data successfully

Q: How can I darken my computer screen even more?

ekajI use my computer a lot during the day... and also at night, because it's quiet and I can be more productive. @avirk Second was mine :D

7:23 AM
I suppose I could figure out a way to place a black box directly behind the transparent window, so it will fade regardless of what's behind it. :)

@OliverSalzburg yup

Anyway. I'm off to bed. See you guys later!

But good that you quoted the most important parts

@slhck letme check
@slhck almost but as you figured out my 1st one is diff
@slhck now I'm feeling very bad its a kind of piracy :(

@avirk Where's piracy here?

@slhck I mean the same copy of answer I'm using

@avirk No, I mean, yours is better since it provides context. And nobody can accuse you for "stealing" the other answer if it's really just a matter of Googling for the error message and looking what other people did to solve it

7:55 AM
is waiting on his two actives ;p

@slhck yes its just matter of Googling when I've not the Mac to check it. And yes updated it with "uninstall and reinstall" request
@JourneymanGeek only 1 active bounty he has.

@avirk: I have two questions with a bounty that i've answered

@JourneymanGeek, so far 63% done, and it has found two additional partitions, and an invalid FAT boot sector. Should I even have a fat boot sector?

the T bird recovery, and the one from video card
@soandos: I would think not

oh, by his, i was referring to myself in third person

No man, the feature you are asking still not exist on these 3rd party tools but I'm sure they are much handy. However I use most of the time batch file, its very handy. — avirk 13 secs ago

Q: How to Disable Hovering Selection Block in File Browser?

BGMI am changing from Windows XP to Windows 7. One thing I cannot stand about Windows 7 is that whenever you mouse over files in Explorer (or other file-browser), it highlights the files with a semi-transparent block.
