1:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek are you there?
Someone is there I need help

2:35 AM
@Bob ping me when you are around.

Bob
@jokerdino hi
something happen?

No. not really.
Regarding that locale / language question, does he only want to set it up in the installer?

Hi guys.

Bob

Q: Setup Ubuntu with differing locale and language settings

a1anWhy is it during a setup of Ubuntu / Debian, it is not possible to select a locale that is not strictly related to the selected language? Are there any drawbacks to using a locale setting different from the selected language? As an example, I'd like to use an international language for the inter...

You'll have to ask him...

He is kinda asking a design question. Is it ontopic here?

Bob
2:47 AM
I only had language and time zone options, I never actually got locale options during the installation :\

@Bob have you any experience with Task scheduler

Bob
@jokerdino Design?

Yes myself too.

Bob
@avirk Some. You'll have to be more specific than that.

@Bob Design as in choosing what is shown and what is not.
You can change the locale after installing though. That's what I have learnt.

2:48 AM
Idle condition bothering me

Bob
@jokerdino I think he might be asking why there isn't an option for the locale during installation? Windows does have that.

@Bob it could be a design choice, I might say.

Bob
@jokerdino Asking if there's a reason there isn't such an option, like it's not recommended or something.
@avirk In what way?

@Bob I'll check the installer design specs then.

Bob
Programs can use a Windows API call to tell Windows it's not idle...

2:51 AM
@Bob I'm finding a solution to run a shutdown task through batch file when system is idle and when it prompts me that your system is about shutdown in idle mode as I again use the PC (idle to working) the task should be aborted.
@Bob If the Stop if the computer ceases to be idle condition is selected for a task and the task is running while the computer is in an idle state, then the task will stop running when the computer ceases to be idle. The task that is stopped by this condition will start running again the next time the computer enters an idle state if the Restart if idle state resumes condition is selected.

Bob
@jokerdino I think that question really boils down to this:

So I'm bother that this will stop the running app or launched task by scheduler

Bob
> Are there any drawbacks to using a locale setting different from the selected language?

@Bob if that is the question, I don't see any drawbacks.

Bob
@jokerdino Then perhaps you can answer? :P

2:53 AM
huh, but he is talking about setting up and what not.

Bob
@avirk I've never actually tried that myself...

@bob I'm working for this superuser.com/a/439586/86550

Bob
You could probably set up a task on becoming "not idle" to abort any timed shutdowns (shutdown /a)

@Bob will you check out if you got any success?

Bob
@jokerdino I personally see that more as context for the actual question, i.e. the reason he's asking...
Of course, that could be a completely wrong interpretation :P

2:56 AM
@Bob Hmm I see. I'll think it through a bit later. I am kinda muddled right now.

I'll Come back soon and join you guys! @Bob if you can check it then please

Bob
@avirk I'm thinking this might be easier with a custom program, actually...

3:41 AM
@Bob Have you any

@avirk: yes?

51 mins ago, by avirk
@Bob If the Stop if the computer ceases to be idle condition is selected for a task and the task is running while the computer is in an idle state, then the task will stop running when the computer ceases to be idle. The task that is stopped by this condition will start running again the next time the computer enters an idle state if the Restart if idle state resumes condition is selected.

hmm
deeper level than i'm used to, i'm afraid

any custom program that warn me to shutdown also built in abort operation, after abort it should warn me again to shutdown as a loop
@JourneymanGeek do you have any idea?

nope
though having notepad opened up would sort of do it i think

4:03 AM
@avirk, I don't recommend this, but you could replace shutdown.exe with a program that can call the old shutdown.exe but with some parameters changed

@soandos how to achieve it?

rename shutdown.exe shutdown1.exe
then write a batch file (or a full program) that takes all of the same parameters (and maybe some more) and does some replacement
like -r could be forwarded as -r -t 60
If you were writing a full program (and not a batch file) it would be trivial to have a message box that will expire after 30 seconds, that has an abort button, etc
and to get it to repeat would also be trivial

@soandos interesting
I've to spent the time to understand about that program ;P

What do you mean?

@soandos Write a full program

4:12 AM
@avirk PING

@Luke yes.

Do you still need help?

@avirk, it would be ~100 lines or so

@Luke Ah! I really need now I'm in curiosity now to achieve this task
@soandos sound very simple though ;P

@avirk Link again please?

A: Automatic shutdown prompt on Windows 7

avirkWithout 3rd party tools You can read this article on How to : Schedule Computer Shutdown After Specific Period of Time if you don't want to use third party software. Also MS Support will help you regarding this. You can create a batch file like this @echo off shutdown /s /f /t 600 /c "Y...

Ah you can set your answer if you achieve it I've no problem though just need a solution

Bob
@soandos I definitely wouldn't recommend this...

Hey guys howz about set /p command line in bacth file

@Bob, that is how I led off

Bob
Windows 7 doesn't like people playing with system files :P

13 mins ago, by soandos
@avirk, I don't recommend this, but you could replace shutdown.exe with a program that can call the old shutdown.exe but with some parameters changed

Bob
4:16 AM
anyway, it's not necessary for the question.
The question wanted a scheduled task that started a timed shutdown with a GUI option to postpone...
Making that kind of GUI program isn't that hard :P

@Bob can you refer me any link for c# for achieving this kind of task and surely I'll implement it

@avirk, you will need the process class, and you may want to do this as winForms
Nothing else really

@soandos Ok guys have to go now I'll see you all on this topic later.

A: Keyboard shortcut to cycle through programs (rather than just the alt-tab switch)?

avirkYou can use Windows+numeric keys to select the task and if there are multiple instances of a single app you can easily swicth with the arrow keys with holding the key combination I told you. Like if you press the Windows+2 it will switch to the second open app in the list of taskbar.

A: Automatic shutdown prompt on Windows 7

LukeGoing off of everyone else's answers that don't seem to be getting accepted, I decided to make a full walk through. This will assume you have Administrative rights, or at least enough rights to shut down the system, and create tasks using the Task Scheduler. Click Start, type Task Scheduler and...

@Bob AHK to the rescue!

Bob
@iglvzx I'm doing one in C# right now :P
I forgot AHK can do this :P

(I edited the wrong chat message...)

Bob

@Bob AHK can do most things that can be done by a human. Oh, you need to sit around for 30 minutes? Done.

@avirk My suggestion list have some another suggestion. i.imgur.com/pZIX3.png I think they are also based on previous searches.

@Sathya where is your answer dude?
;P

@Sathya I don't get it. Is it just a new look for the existing tools?

@OliverSalzburg new look + some extra tweaks

@Sathya OK. Can't really play with it. I only have like 100 rep on meta :D

5:32 AM
@OliverSalzburg ^^^

The improvement is not immediately apparent to me
Yeah, those are the parts I've seen. I thought there's more :D

I need to play with it when I get home. Everything feels weird when used on this laptop :D

@OliverSalzburg inline editing for improving, one-click-flag for deletion, yes/no/Idon't know
all these are pretty neat

@Sathya Indeed. That could shave off some time while reviewing.

Bob

git it installed?

I have a Google+ tab and a GMail tab open and my phone next to me. Someone just commented somewhere and I got a notification on the G+ tab, the GMail tab, got a mail notification on my phone, got the G+ notification in the G+ app...
Seriously... I got it :P

Bob
@JourneymanGeek lol

@OliverSalzburg Are you sure you got the message?

Q: Super User mid 2012 tag/question cleanup

SathyaDuring my course of reviewing, editing & general janitorial cleanup, I ran into few tags that were pretty much useless. Cool. Work

Bob
Ok, I just lost 40 tabs :\

How?

Bob
I have no idea :P

Where'd they go?
@Bob do you use chrome?

Bob
6:12 AM
Nope, Firefox
With Tabs Mix Plus, so I normally have two layers of session restore
Both failed :\

Ah. Dang. I use this extension: chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/…
Wow. That sucks.

Bob
TMP restored tabs from a couple of weeks ago for some reason
FF just forgot everything

@Santosh was what me?
@Sathya you around?

que pasa hombres?

anyone know if GParted usually shows a progress bar when copying a partition?

6:25 AM
It's a progress bar, but it's crude. It's more of a "what stage are we on" than a "you are a total of 45% done"
although it does report an estimated time remaining IIRC

It did that for the resize, but for the copy it just has a bouncing bar
and no ETA

Well that sucks.

Yeah. I want to know if that means that there is something that is wrong with the copy
or if this is expected behavior

Hmm

Bob
6:48 AM

Maybe it's the new thing to do?

ugh, anyone want some editing rep?
is slightly sick of questions that primarily need some spellcheck and a tiny bit of TLC

I don't understand this user's "example"

Q: Personal name on the laptop screen in Windows 7

T A H RamaswamiCould you pl help in getting my name on the laptop screen in Windows 7 say on the right side bottom corner Er. TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT BE., mmmm. The suffix Degree after the name to be in smaller font

TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT?
3.14 .......... ?

7:06 AM
Basically he wants his name on the login screen
Er = Emeritus i think
Old chap ;p

@JourneymanGeek Where did you get login screen from?

TTTTT = name
@iglvzx: its part of the mouse without borders program
oh, the windows one?

@JourneymanGeek You lost me. Where is that mentioned? I thought this was just a simple question on placing an image or rich text in the bottom right corner of the desktop?

basically this lets you set anything as a login screen
@iglvzx: so.. replace the whole login screen with an image with that info

That is a very weird question.

7:09 AM
@iglvzx: i can't think of any way to 'just' do that

@nhinkle Reminds me of the setting to show the Windows version, etc in that corner.
@JourneymanGeek Oh. Okay. I have some ideas. However, it is unclear if they want it to always be visible or if they want the absolute corner of the screen....

hm, there's an easier way to do this is seems ;p
well, not easier, but without third party software

@JourneymanGeek Well, you can be sarcastic and advise the OP to place a sticker on the edge of their screen.

lol
its my OQOD

OQOD?

8:13 AM
anyone know how to repair a windows install if windows does not detect it, and sfc /scannow says to reboot windows?

Hello guys

Bob
@soandos ...again?!
If Windows does not detect what?

The OSes
by itself

Bob
@Nima Hi
@soandos You've completely lost me :P

On the bright side, the bootloaders all work, and the partitions are all good

Bob
8:17 AM
Oh, multiboot?

in the first stage, where you can click start up repair, it does not show the operating systems

Bob
how many OSes?

Are you using original Windows?

There are now two windows OSes that should be thre

Bob
What are they?

8:18 AM
@Nima windows 7

Bob
Both Win7?

yup
and they should be identical as well

Bob
I'm assuming msconfig only shows one?

not in msconfig
repair disk

Bob
..
bootrec /scanos

8:19 AM
bootrec /rebuildbcd shows both

Bob
So you can boot into one but not the other?

nope
get error 225
last night, when I got it, it showed up as an OS under startup repair, and it was automatiicaly fixed
Here, it does not show up, but I think there is a simple command/set of commands that can fix the issue
and sfc /scannnow does not want to work "system repair pending, restart windows and run sfc again"

@soandos Can you access safemode?

@Nima, no

hmm

Bob
8:24 AM
I'm feeling an odd sense of déjà vu here :\

me too
least the partitions are good
and I can get into ubuntu if that will help

Bob
Wait.. you can get into Ubuntu..
So is GRUB your primary bootloader?

yes
but it sees the windows OSes
and can boot into them. Windows then tells me "error 225"

Bob
what, just the error code without any additional text?

1 min, ill get it again

8:28 AM
@soandos try to disconnect all your external devices other than mouse and keyboard and boot again

windows failed to start ... status c0000225
@Nima, there are no devices connected

Bob
c0000225 is very different from 225...
:P

true, sorry, I missed the c the first time around

Bob
Is it a blue screen or black screen?

black
it is clearly a boot time error, not a BSOD

8:32 AM
I would say backup your data using your ubuntu and reinstall that thing :D

Bob
..sounds like the time I tried to install a 64-bit version of Windows on a 32-bit VM..
:\

I am sure there is more than one way to get the error

Bob
Is this a UEFI system?

@Nima, that would be silly, all the data is still intact
@Bob, nope

Bob
is this the same computer as yesterday? :P

8:33 AM
Are you using SSD?

@Bob, yes, @Nima, no

@Nima the best idea ever.

:D

@jokerdino, why? It kills all my installed programs

@soandos one-conf it and one-conf (hopefully) will take care of it.

8:36 AM
@jokerdino, sorry, don't follow
@Bob, I have half a mind to nuke GRUB, get the windows bootloader back, then the repair disk should recognize it
@jokerdino, does that work with windows?

@soandos hmm no. only for Ubuntu.

@jokerdino, figured

Bob
@soandos you might want to try reinstalling GRUB

But I am getting to windows just fine...

Bob
reinstall the Windows bootloaders first, then either leave GRUB out or reinstall it

8:39 AM
It's not grub fault
that poor thing is doing its job fine

I can do that
just bootrec with all options :)
repeatedly

Bob
Well, the first thing to do is get Windows' bootloaders reinstalled

was there any other command that had to be run last time?

Bob
did you end up completing that partition resize?

@soandos you get the same error if you try booting into safemode?

Bob
8:40 AM
umm.. had to set the Windows partition as active

right

ok now, what's the problem again?

Bob
also did bootsect /nt60 D: /force /mbr or something

@jokerdino, I cannot boot into windows
sucsessfully

because?

8:41 AM
windows throws an error

oh, it shows up in the grub right?
probably you resized the windows drive which had the bootloader?

typ
yup

ah, the bootloader might have been damaged.. ;/

@jokerdino, yup

hmm.
installing the bootloader might possibly fix it. but i have no idea how to proceed that far.

8:43 AM
@bob, was was the disk utility called (to set it as active)?

Bob
@soandos diskpart

got it

Bob
list disk
select disk=#
list partition
select partition=#
detail partition
active

forgot just the last part, thanks
windows bootloader is up
much faster time two
repair now sees the installation
and now all fixed :)
@jokerdino what is the best way to get GRUB back in place?

re-install it?

8:49 AM
@Bob, it also found the other windows partition and fixed it

or what do you mean by get it back in place?

@jokerdino, yes, but how?
I mean get it so that it sees all three OSes

you mean there is no grub at all?

Right now? no, it was nuked

ah that. you can try sudo update-grub

8:50 AM
I can no longer access ubuntu

or install osprobe and check if it can see.

Bob
@soandos LiveCD :)

if there is no grub, install grub / lilo using live cd.

I have a live ubuntu CD, but it makes me do an install to get grub
very annoying

@soandos chroot
chroot to the existing partition and then install grub.

8:51 AM
@jokerdino, I need a CD that can do this (or from windows)

you can use the live cd and then chroot
if you don't have one, hm

Is an alt ubuntu install disk also a live disk? or not?
(I think not)

no. alternate is not.

and regular won't work (graphics driver issues)

not even tty?

8:53 AM
what is tty?

the ctrl-alt-f1 thing
terminal

oh, I can get to terminal, good point
actually, the alt disk also has terminal no?

i have never tried the alt disk.
but since it is not live, I don't think you can do much.

got it
time to download the regular ubuntu live CD

have fun.

8:56 AM
no, iirc the alt disk throws you into a classic terminal based installer
there really should be a pure cli ubuntu live disk

@JourneymanGeek, not the case (least not now)

Bob
Does it even have to be Ubuntu?

@bob, I guess not, I also have the debian install disks

@Bob: not really

not sure. i think you only need a live Linux cd.

8:57 AM
I seem to recall they were more forgiving about going out of order

Should be easy to build one

@jokerdino, any idea if debian is GRUB or GRUB2?

grub2 most probably.
let me check for sure

k

OOH, looks like chrome remote host has a task of its own

8:58 AM
@JourneymanGeek, what is that?

$ rmadison -u debian  grub2
