12:15 AM
@PotatoCat Have you tried _not_ killing them? :P
Seriously, though, what brand? What do you do with it? o.O

Maybe they possess the hands of death
"Bob is an american...." 0_0

Bob
@Aibobot can't watch right now
still waiting for cgw live chat to come online :\

@Bob tis ok. I mentioned the joke. Assuming I remembered the lyrics correctly

2 hours later…
Bob
2:43 AM
@JourneymanGeek Seems like all of cgw's staff has buggered off for the day o.O

My Brother laser printer can't accurately give me toner levels. It seems to be low—but one moment it flashes low, another moment it goes back to normal!
The printer's internal server indicates that there's 20% left on the toner cartridge but my experience shows that there's likely to be less than 100 pages left.

@Bob damn. They've always been reliable for me :/

Bob
3:03 AM
@JourneymanGeek Well, they don't seem to have live chat anymore as of last night...

Bob
3:13 AM
...
oh great NOW it works

3:31 AM
So, with the hurricane coming and absolutely slamming Florida and potentially even causing power outages and deaths up and down the East Coast of the US, bringing with it power outages and all kinds of nonsense, does anyone have any ideas for getting cheaper GPU acceleration in the cloud for playing MMOs like SWTOR?
Basically I have friends who are either without power now, or will be soon, but the cellular infrastructure is relied on for emergency services in the US, so it's super reliable and is usually up even when everything else is down
And people have phones and backup batteries so they can go sometimes a day or even a week depending on how much they have, but they might have no cable or DSL Internet, and/or no power
And there's a possibility that I'll be without power at some point, but I have tons of batteries and unlimited cellular data
Just looking for a way to play SWTOR over the Internet without paying an arm and a leg, that's it - currently the best solution I know is TeamViewer with Amazon EC2 using a GPU spot instance

if thats the best, i would rather fire up a good (offline) 3d phone game and ride out the storm :-)

3:44 AM
@Bob you complained. The universe listened :p

Bob
3:55 AM
@allquicatic When does it hit?
@allquicatic The other day, I think it was @Freedo who posted liquidsky?
@allquicatic Ask/Pay a friend nearby-ish who has a spare machine? :P

looks like thur (today now), fri, and sat , buzzsawing the coast cat4

Bob
@JourneymanGeek O_O apparently they've sent some emails to me that I never received
Ok, all seems to be fine now.
Yay three days of pointless stress.
Hm. They did leave me with some credit, which is nice. As long as I avoid ordering chargers apparently.

4:36 AM

@Bob Florida? Tomorrow / now-ish. Here? A couple days.

Bob
@allquicatic Ouch, it's going to hit you too?
I only found out there was a hurricane... two hours ago? -_-

4:54 AM
@Bob possibly; they don't know which way it's going to track
unfortunately the Anker Powerhouse is sold out

thats cause it is going to hit melbourne fl. not that other one :-)

high-demand item, driven even higher by the hurricane :P

Bob
@allquicatic s/high-demand/unshippable/
dammit.
@allquicatic Wait, didn't you get a generator after Sandy?
Can you run your PC off that?

@Bob nope.
@Bob all I have is a UPS -- but since it's lead acid based and designed for extremely high drain rate and mainly outputting power at 115-120 VAC, instead of 5VDC, just running the UPS into a USB device like a phone wouldn't be very efficient; it might just barely be able to eke out a single charge to my Macbook Pro
the UPS has two 51 Wh sealed lead acid batteries totaling 102 Wh of energy; unfortunately it would deliver that energy at fairly low efficiency to either one of my laptop or my phone, and drain quite quickly
what I really need is the four times bigger, lithium ion, PowerHouse, which isn't really designed to pump out the sheer wattage needed to power my desktop -- which is fine -- but would be able to give me days on my phone or at least a day and a half on my macbook pro

Bob
5:15 AM
@allquicatic ah

@Bob O_O OH SHIT the Nvidia bug is eating my RA tab in Chrome
that one

Bob
I think I have enough power to last... hm... (16000 + 10400 * 2 + 5000 * 2 + 10400) / 3600 * 0.8
Approx 12 full charges of the S7E
Which is at least 5 days of usage non-stop.

HAMMERTIME!

Bob
@allquicatic o.O

@allquicatic aggggg, that sucks, what is the Nvidea bug? I am getting closer and closer to buying a 1070

Bob
5:18 AM
@allquicatic Oh yea that's happened to me a couple more times since.
Not sure if it's actually a nvidia problem, whether it's the driver, hardware, or win10 itself...
seems to only happen (very occasionally) in the browser, never in other programs (games)

same
could be a Chrome / ANGLE issue

Bob
@allquicatic I use Firefox...
which might also use ANGLE, not sure

i was almost going to get a 480, cause i am familliar with ATI, but even at 1080P type resolutions, there are some poorly optomised high end games, that will not maintain a constant 60FPS with the 480. Enough, but not as long term.

Bob
> WebGL Renderer Google Inc. -- ANGLE
yup
@allquicatic Actually, I wouldn't be surprised. Google's put out a lot of bugs in Chrome recently :\
@allquicatic but, wait, most webpages wouldn't use WebGL?

does this "bug" show up ever at any single time when playing games? Cause my present card, i can play for months and months, and nary an issue.

5:21 AM
@Bob definitely not RA
@Bob true - they introduced, then later fixed, a horrible flickering bug when typing text into the address bar on Mac OS X with Iris Pro graphics
it affected me for about 2 weeks solid on Sierra before a Chrome update fixed it

Bob
@Psycogeek I've never seen it in a game
@allquicatic There's an ongoing scrollbar bug (extra scrollbars where there shouldn't be) that's affecting me right now
@allquicatic Assuming Firefox uses raw D3D, then it's probably an OS/driver issue :\
I doubt it's hardware... I hope it's not hardware...
@allquicatic I'm running such an old version of the AMD drivers at work that VBox crashes :P

@Bob if it's hardware then it's affecting both of our 1080s
@Bob wow
on a Mac?

Bob
Radeon HD 7470... the Intel HD 4000 (i7-3770) on the CPU is better :\
@allquicatic The drivers? Nah, Windows.
Come to think of it, I haven't checked the scrollbar bug on mac. Probably should.
I wonder if I should just rip out the dGPU and use the iGPU
except there's no DVI ports on the iGPU... just 2x DP and 1x VGA. Only one monitor does DP.

5:37 AM
can't you do DVI-D to DP passive passthrough?
thanks for mentioning Liquidsky; the value seems about where I want it to be, but it's currently got a broken SMS verification system so I'm not able to make my account :P
also, appears to be Android-only, no iOS

Bob
6:07 AM
@allquicatic IIRC, no, you can't
and I'd have to get a cable anyway :\
@allquicatic don't they do RDP?
@allquicatic Also, GeForce Now?
Oh, no, shield only
and RDP isn't a good idea either :P
@allquicatic ah, damn, they do one of those referral things
well, I do have half a dozen SIMs, if you need... :P

7:09 AM
@Bob, we need to stop the shoe daves... There was only 1 shoe dave, but, there shouldn't be so many Dave's

7:35 AM
my pc is up for 24 hours and I still haven't finished the conversion of 24 video files
if I use a VPS for that
would be faster to get a 8-core single VPS or 2 VPS with 4-core

I guess the issue will disk IO... You can only write to the disc at once, so even if you have 2 machines doing it, they'd still have to wait until it's free... So, I'd consider either 1 VPS with 2 hard drives or 2 VPs

lol...SSD bro...

Ahhh
:)

The bottleneck is the CPU
I'm using handbrake , it says it is multithreaded
but I also read that converting videos doesn't use multiple cores very well

My god

7:39 AM
IT'S FULL OF STARS

One of my co-workers.... And not the total noon called. She had an issue with our drive docks....

if the app is multi threaded then it should use the cores as it's intended... I say should!

Drive wasn't inserted correctly....

it's not something that can be greatly paralleled

Noon? Noon.

7:41 AM
I think its something like that one cpu needs to wait one block from the another and so on

Noob damn autocucumbers...

seems like you have the answer then :)

I think 8 VPS with 2-core each would be able to convert 8 files simultaneously faster right?

Bob
7:54 AM
@Freedo u wot
*cough* QSV/VCE/NVENC *cough*
*cough* OpenCL/CUDA *cough*

Ah, here' s a question for you people... the world of the web. Is any one noticing if people (may be the youngsters) dropping the www.

morning
i haven't noticed that

I'm in a debate that the world still prefixes www. in adverts/promo stuff (search results in Google) but they're convinced it's old fashioned
No, I have'nt noticed it either

Bob
@Dave www isn't really a thing anymore

i always thought the people adding the www were younger people

8:00 AM
I don't think www. has actually been required for a long time
but, their argument is it's old people who do it out of habbit

depends on the server config

if I go to this site, i'd always type www.superuser.com
not just superuser.com
so a website I'm working on redirects from www.website.com to website.com

i always type superuser.com

hmmmmm
am i getting old...
that's good to know
oddly, this site does it

i'm 33 btw so i'm not a good cross section of society

8:02 AM
type in www.superuser.com and be redirected to superuser.com

@Dave my reasoning is that its 4 characters i don't have to type

hmmmmmmm may be I'm incorrect here ?

superuser.com redirects to www.superuser.com

... no, other way round @Burgi
let me double check

you are correct

8:04 AM
nope. www.superuser.com directs to superuser.com
does it not for you?

i was mistaken
make a note on the calendar ;)

phew
:)

Bob
I don't think I've typed a www in... I can't even remember. A decade?
afaict it's mostly kept as a legacy artefact for older people trained to expect a www
there's many many sites where it makes absolutely no sense
ever used bit.ly? goo.gl?

Oops. What was that URL...

hmmmmm, this is a great conversation. And ironic because when I asked at webmasters they didn't really know or answer :)

Bob
8:07 AM
@JourneymanGeek no-www.org, iirc
and there was one for the other side, yes-www.org

yup :p

it seems more like a "movement" to me.

Bob

Q: Should I include "www" in my canonical URLs? What are the pros and cons?

Andreas BoniniWhat are the pros and cons of having http://www.example.com/ vs http://example.com/? For example a problem I'm aware of is that if I use a domain without www I can't set a cookie for the current subdomain only (since there is no subdomain), and the cookies I set will be sent to all subdomains.

oddly, I've just done loads of searches and I can't find SuperUser in the Google results

Bob
2010 though so it's a bit old

8:09 AM
in regards to printing it on artwork i think it is an aesthetic thing
i can ask the designners when they get in the office

indeed. I'm more concerned about SEO to be honest. If you search for anything in Google, you'll see the indexed pages. I'd say from my research that 95% of them show a subdomain, be it es.website.com or wiki.websites.com or www.website.com
Twitter is the only one I found which shows no subdomain

Bob
@Dave "es.website.com" and "wiki.websites.com" are not "www" - that should tell you something, yes?
end of the day it doesn't really matter

Bob
accept both, redirect in whichever direction. there's some technical advantages to redirecting to a subdomain. that's all

@Bob, what it shows to me is, Google prefers the website which has a subdomain
the debate is subdomain or no subdomain, sorry if I made it sound more like www. or not

Bob
8:12 AM
@Dave nup. Google has no preference.
"example.com." is merely a subdomain of "com."

@Bob what is the technical advantage?

You see, and this is where the complexity comes in. Most sites which do well are established. And therefore could be considered old fashioned and have a www.

Bob
@Burgi see post above

but if you do some Google searches now, search for anything you like, you'll see the results. it will show the domain and I think 95% of them have a sub domain
so that's what makes me think Google could actually prefer it...

Bob
@Dave In fact, Google webmaster tools apparently specifically let you choose your preference (and Google will consider all results for the other domain(s) to be equivalent to the canonical one you specify)
@Dave that... is entirely meaningless

8:14 AM
Go on @Bob...

Bob
? I've already told you why it's meaningless.
It's purely the site owner's choice.
Google does not care

Oh I see, in the webmaster tools...

i did put a bid in for xxx.xxx when it came out

ha ha ha

Bob
Including or excluding a subdomain should not, will not, affect your search rankings.

8:16 AM
i think it sold for $100k
i just wanted the address xxx.xxx.xxx
:P

Bob
@Dave in fact, I can also say this statement is incorrect.
it's obviously heavily skewed depending on what you search for
search for anything remotely tech-related and it'll go straight in the other direction
git.
svn.
slashdot, even

are there any RA regulars from florida that we need to keep an eye out for?

@Burgi @allquicatic is close enough to the projected hurricane track to be worried, although I don't think he's in Florida.

interesting @Bob...

Bob
@DavidPostill he's not even in the tropical storm warning zone, so... yea
probably gonna miss him by a state or two, unless something drastically changes for the worse
there's some threat of power outage, but nowhere near a direct hit from wind

8:33 AM
What the hell am I doing with my life

@PotatoCat you were hugging girls outside mcdonalds last night

@Burgi Yeah that was weird

sounds like a plus to me

Still weird

it wasn't clear if it was them or you that was wearing the lederhosen

8:46 AM
Them
We have some imitation oktoberfest thing going on here

@Burgi What is really weird is that Ledehosen is normally worn by boys/men. Girls/women normally wear Dirndls
Lederhosen (German for leather breeches; singular in German usage: Lederhose) are breeches made of leather; they may be either short or knee-length. The longer ones are generally called Bundhosen or Kniebundhosen. The German pronunciation is [ˈleːdəɐ̯.hoːzn̩], and the English pronunciation is /ˈleɪdərhoʊzən/. == Traditional Bavarian men's clothing == Formerly, lederhosen were worn for hard physical work; they were more durable than a fabric garment. Today, they are mostly worn as leisurewear. Today, lederhosen and dirndl attire is common at Oktoberfest events around the world. Lederhosen were...
A dirndl (German: [ˈdɪʁndl̩]) is a type of traditional dress worn in Austria, South Tyrol and Bavaria. It is based on the traditional clothing of Alps peasants. Dresses that are loosely based on the dirndl are known as Landhausmode ("country-inspired fashion"). A dirndl skirt generally describes a light circular cut dress, gathered at the waist, that falls below the knee. == Description == The dirndl consists of a bodice, blouse, full skirt and apron. While appearing to be simple and plain, a properly made modern dirndl may be quite expensive as it is tailored and sometimes cut from costly hand...
@PotatoCat Are you sure they wore Lederhosen? ^^^
In other news:

"President Barack Obama declared a federal state of emergency in Florida where the Category Four storm is expected to strike early on Friday morning with winds of up to 145mph. "

9:30 AM
Hi!
How much trolling, anti-Asian racism can you pack into one news segment? More than I ever thought possible: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PJmnLzw8NA4

10:03 AM
So www. on urls - for a few versions firefox has hidden it if it IS there. On the radio here they don't say www. they just say the url, or 'google for...;
IIRC Tim Bernards Lee hates the www. too

I had one of those days when I realised why tech workers from the old country have a bad rep. Of the 4 newbies, the lady from the old country probably has the same or even better experience than me. She went on a new machine install and got stuck cause the dock we use for data transfer failed.... Went over and found the drive was not seated correctly. Then she proceeds to ask me what to copy over.....
I have a checklist I share with the others with all that....
well I need to do a ore deployment checklist too

Hi, anyone home?
I Have a question regarding Apache Tomcat 7, can anyone help?

@JourneymanGeek The old country?

@DavidPostill place my parents are from. :p

10:10 AM
@JourneymanGeek Ah. I thought you might be referring to the UK for a minute :)

bub
\I Have a question regarding Apache Tomcat 7, can anyone help?

@bub Ask away. If nobody answers then ask on the main site.

bub
cool!

Tech questions (unless they are very simple to answer) are best asked on the main site Super User. If you do that everybody (future visitors) gets the benefit of your question and any answers.

@bub chat culture here is we typically talk about things.if it's a super quick embarrassingly simple question... Maybe. If you know someone specific who knows maybe. Else we encourage people to ask on the main site or maybe sf.

10:14 AM
That is some amazing research...

so... there is is a girl across the road being photographed for "glamour" shots....

bub
So the issue I have is with tomcat clustering - The node name in the sessionId is not being updated to the correct node name.

I have two nodes set up, with the session replication config (uses sticky session). From the tomcat Manager, I can see that sessions are being replicated accross two nodes.

But, when one of the nodes goes down, I am expecting the sessionId in the backup node to be updated.
Ex :
When user logs in :
Node 1 - Primary - jsessionIdSample.node1
Node 2 - Backup - jsessionIdSample.node1
@JourneymanGeek , @DavidPostill , thanks guys, will keep that in mind, anyways, above is the question.

that totally feels like a decent start for a serverfault question

might be considered NSFW imgur.com/6lX63kS

By DavidP standards?

10:27 AM
lol yeah :)
you see some odd stuff working here

@Burgi She must be getting a bit cold - goose pimples are not good in "glamour" shots :)

you are old if you think "she must be cold".... ;P

@Burgi Well I would be dressed like that today :)

@DavidPostill in a boob tube, short shorts and heels?

10:34 AM
@JourneymanGeek dei mike

lol. I suppose I missed an "if I" from that last comment :)

Hi folks

YOU. YOU! oh, never mind, Hi!

Ell
:3
Am I alone in forgetting what all the different RAIDs do?

yes. FOREVER ALONE...
(I just remember 1, 0 and 5)

Ell
I'm trying to remove a device from my btrfs filesystem
clippy surprises me every time XD
but I have no idea how it is configured at the minute
because I've forgotten what raid0, raid1 and "single" means

@DavidPostill really? I don't see any spammer ;)

Ell
11:08 AM
welp, I started btrfs balance start -dconvert=single anyway, let's hope I don't lose all of my data vOv

11:36 AM
@JourneymanGeek How about 6?

and 10

11:51 AM
10 is 0 atop one. Maybe 1 atop 0

Q: What are the different widely used RAID levels and when should I consider them?

MDMarra This is a Canonical Question about RAID levels. What are: the RAID levels typically used (including the RAID-Z family)? deployments are they commonly found in? benefits and pitfalls of each?

"RAID 10 is a combination of RAID 1 and RAID 0. The order of the 1 and 0 is very important. "

@DavidPostill Maryland. One of the possible tracks of the hurricane would be right up the east coast, but in any case, by the time it hits me, it would be worst case a category 1 or 2 hurricane -- which, while that's pretty nasty and might mess up my yard, is unlikely to deal severe damage to my house (shatter windows etc). I MIGHT lose power/Internet. Hard to say.
Basically I think my personal safety is squared away, but I might have damaged property and/or inconvenience
a category 1 hurricane is extremely survivable for a modern freestanding structure
Category 3 would start to cause structural damage (ripping off siding and roof panels, maybe shattering windows); Category 4 would definitely cause structural damage for anything not "reinforced" specifically to withstand damn powerful winds; and Category 5 would be basically an enormous tornado
it's going to hit Florida as a Category 4 or 3, then either immediately turn around and go out to sea, or keep heading north x northeast and leaving moderate to severe destruction in its wake as it weakens rapidly

"The BBC's Laura Bicker in Florida says the eye of the storm is now just a few miles off the coast of Daytona Beach and the wind and rain are relentless. A buoy in the water near Cape Canaveral has measured 17ft (5m) waves. "There is no electricity here - hundreds of thousands have lost power," she says."

@DavidPostill urgh
there's NO reason to have people on the ground there (the media I mean)
@OliverSalzburg It's just 5 plus a redudant copy

@allquicatic hm. most of the maps I've seen suggest it'll probably head out to sea around southern-North Carolina?
'course, you'd definitely have more accurate info :P

12:50 PM
Hi guys.
I wanted to ask.
Does the "loader" remember the programs last memory address location.
And is the "loader" a part of the Kernel?

what is the loader/

Loader software?

...

The one that loads libraries and software into the main memory?

What does it do/link/help
The kernel?

12:52 PM
Apparently, it is a feature of an OS.
I'm confused, because yeah, it is a feature of the Kernel as well.

You likely want one of the programming orientated rooms.

I see.
Thanks.
My school notes are the most confusing notes ever.
I have to end up Googling all over with even more complex explanations.

@djsmiley2k it does surprise me that they issue an evacuation to all the locals and then the journalists show up

Bob
@HassanAlthaf gonna need more context. what OS are you talking about?
usually, yes, the core OS (kernel) is responsible for allocating the process object, setting up some core structures, and then calling into user-mode code
but the program itself is often responsible for loading libraries (perhaps with OS APIs, not in kernel-mode)
usually you'd go through a fairly standard framework that would do some of that for you. e.g. if you use C the C compiler actually generates code that sets a lot of stuff up before main() is called

i remember watching a tv show about extreme weather and the wind was so strong it was blowing electricity out of the power lines
very odd
