Q: Why don't you connect unused hot and neutral wires to "complete the circuit"?

SkoantOk so I'm new to home wiring and had a question I'd like explained to me. I removed a vent hood over my oven and I thought I had to complete the circuit so I tied the hot and neuteral wires that were powering the hood together with a wire nut, but all the lights on that breaker in the house didn'...

O_O

it is questions like this, that make me think i am a qualified electrician, even though i dont have a licence :-)

I was just thinking
stoned, watching cable tv which is so obsolete

whats scary is knowing someday they will (have a licence)

and i thought...why cable tv companies can afford to deliver hundreds of HD channels but a ISP struggle to deliver netflix if everybody in a neighborhood is using it

it is amazing the ammount of crap they shove down that one wire. but most of it is "broadcast" the same stuff to everyone, not 2 way , no different stream .
the direct and pay to watch stuff, and watch in different times uses a rather small portion of the available bandwidth.
from looking at the frequencies available for the personal stream kind of stuff, it seems to me it could get overloaded very quickly, if lots and lots of people Paid out the nose for that kind of demand viewing.

3:32 AM
So you are essentially saying that they can do that because it's one way communication ?

and similar to fiber being capable of sending tens of thousands of different light frequencies down it , which is how they will and do expand the fiber capability, the cable has a ton of radio frequencies they can pipe down the same line.
and cable unlike over air broadcast, is not (as) limited to the vast array of frequencies they can use.

Is there any kind of estimation of much data a cable tv transmit ? Just curiosity

i am sure there is that info available. it must have some limitations in the frequencies they use, because people indicate that even cable companies compress stuff.
I have an antenna, but dont really watch tv, and the dude who does, claims the picture looks much better.
but it could be due just as much to any processing, de-re coding, to add local advertising, and processing to get it back and forth and all the distribution and all.
@Freedo you know i asked you if you wanted bounty on your question, dont know if you saw it. but i got bounty for good questions, that are answerable and explained well and all.

All my past questions I believe I found my own solution later
so it's not necessary anymore thanks

and then didnt Self Answer them, naughty naughty :-)

3:45 AM
I think I did on some
don't remember

they were supposed to have like 500 channels down cable someday, about 13 that people would actually watch (thats how many there were in like 1960)
i counted ours once a few years ago and got about 330

Bob
@Freedo Broadcast, so you're limited by the number of channels regardless of the number of users. Netflix is limited by the number of simultaneous streams, not the number of shows (which do count towards storage space).
Also, IIRC in a single cable there's a lot more bandwidth allocated to TV than the data channels on the same cable.

hmm I see
but I wish it was the other way
but I'm not aware of any cable tv offering 4k content
could they stream multiple 4k channels with current technology ?

4:38 AM
they could. even now the breakdown on bandwith had HD and SD channels, 4 SD cHannels can be wedged into the same spaces as a HD channel. so 4 hd channel spaces or 16 SD could make up one QHD space. Be fine with me if they had only 50 channels and they were all 4K, I dont even have a 4k monitor :-) they could remove the 3 food channels and the 17 shopping channels the 8 preach2me channeLs and have lots of spaces :-0
If bob would take Rupert Murdock back to AU , i am sure they can find some crime to pin on him :-) fox news could go away and the IQ of the states would go up 2 points.

@Bob Yeah I still don't get the "the ol' potato poop.ws", never heard of it before
@Bob Want server with 3TB+ HDD and redundant SSDs. Can get either for about $30 but to get both in the same box is $150+

The alternative being getting a server with 2/3x SSDs and using NFS for the 3TB+ bulk storage. But ironically I need STR more for the bulk storage than the SSD storage.
Interestingly managing about 0.2ms latency from virtual machine => host => network => router => two more routers => openstack network => openstack host => vps over NFS

Bob
@PotatoCat o.O
sounds like the kind of fragile setup I'd spend days failing to get working

Funny enough it's been far more stable than I had expected... and spawning a new SSD NFS box is really three commands and one line in /etc/exports...

@PotatoCat the domain name is emoji of pizza and poop. that's all

I was talking to the bank about a loan, they said I could make payments on a 10k loan and have a reasonable interest rate , IF i would secure 10K in thier bank , which they would hold for the life of said loan. What-A-Deal
They say that to you with a straight face, and you start busting up laughing , you still have to explain to them why your laughing.

they will only loan you 10k if you have 10k collateral?

Hm. That went badly. They should be clearer when they tell me to bring computers.... I got 10 boxes of unopened ones when they needed the opened consolidated ones that's hidden behind the new stuff in the store....

@DavidPostill It's good to see the ICO is finally using that fining power it has to implement some actual good fines
tho, 400,000 customers
so each customer worth £1?

> 156,959 customers including their names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers and email addresses. In 15,656 cases, the attacker also had access to bank account details and sort codes.
That's roughly £2.55 per customer

12:37 PM
ok, yeah
still
Meanwhile, in the year that the ICO taken to concider this case and level the fine at them

Some customers were scammed 1000s of UKP after the breach. I presume they got their money back but who knows ...

they've made what, £100 per customer?

On the Pixel: The unlocked version will work on all major networks, but I doubt Verizon will provision new service on an unlocked model. AT&T and T-Mobile, as usual, will have no problem.

wtf
Version refuse to give service to a unlocked phone?

it goes on to say that it was actually tiscali's fault as the insecure pages were part of tiscali's infrastructure

12:39 PM
Max fine is £500,000

The bootloader on the Verizon model is locked and it may not get updates as quickly as the direct-from-Google units.
Blame Verizon's draconian certification requirements for that.

@Burgi On 30 June 2009, Tiscali sold its UK subsidiary to Carphone Warehouse following regulatory approval from the European Union. The service was rebranded as TalkTalk in January 2010.
They had plenty of time to fix it.

agreed

(Same issue with the 2013 Nexus 7 and several other Nexus devices: Verizon won't provision new service on it but existing Verizon SIMs will work.)

SQL injection
Any major web facing company should know about SQL injection vulnerabilities

12:42 PM
even in 2009?

hmmm pretty sure I did
and it was 2014
wasn't it?

Only Verizon customers will be able to get the Pixel from their carrier. Everyone else needs to get it from Google.

@djsmiley2k No.

@DavidPostill Ah it's the EU's fault!

@djsmiley2k the attack was 2014 but those pages had not been updated since 2009

12:43 PM
@Burgi The first public discussions of SQL injection started appearing around 1998; for example, a 1998 article in Phrack Magazine.
SQL injection is a code injection technique, used to attack data-driven applications, in which nefarious SQL statements are inserted into an entry field for execution (e.g. to dump the database contents to the attacker). SQL injection must exploit a security vulnerability in an application's software, for example, when user input is either incorrectly filtered for string literal escape characters embedded in SQL statements or user input is not strongly typed and unexpectedly executed. SQL injection is mostly known as an attack vector for websites but can be used to attack any type of SQL database...
They had 16 years to fix it ...

@Burgi So those yearly pen tests etc...
@DavidPostill Herein lies the problem, I bet they don't think of themselves as any kind of 'web facing' company, even as an 'ISP'

> IIS is not too bad as a web server. It still doesn't compare to Apache
LOLOLOLOLOLOL

@djsmiley2k I bet they do now. It will be interesting to see if the MD personally pays the fine :)

> Pixels purchased from the Google Store can be used on Verizon flawlessly

Mind you the fine is still peanuts at 0.4 million.

12:49 PM
Not so sure, though...

the hack cost the company £60 million and lost it 95,000 customers, it has admitted in its financial results.

(A SIM from an existing line should work but it may not be possible to provision new service on it.)

You'll probably need the Verizon version to activate new service on the Verizon network.

why are the telecomms companies in america so..... uncompetitive?

12:53 PM

@Burgi Land of the FREEEEE

@bwDraco how does he stop people just dropping the DB and breaking his demo?

It's probably a read-only database.

Do an injection attack to see what commands have been run against it, or what the setup is

Anticompetitve conduct has been implicated before.
This is despite the fact that someone could just insert an already-provisioned Verizon LTE SIM into the device and get service.
*anticompetitive
@jeffjarvis I'm excited you got your Nexus 7 but not all LTE tablets are created equal. It's not part of our line up & can't be activated^JH

1:14 PM
i thought the nexus 7 was WIFI only
at least mine is...

There's an LTE model.

is that new?

Hi guys! Could you help me with an assignment about installing Operative Systems? Thanks.

@QuicoLlinaresLlorens What are trying to install?

I have to install some OS

1:23 PM
Any OS?

@QuicoLlinaresLlorens Tech questions (unless they are very simple to answer) are best asked on the main site Super User. If you do that everybody (future visitors) gets the benefit of your question and any answers.

but my question remains on the profiles that every OS have to had

So Im having more computer problems...with Family Safety this time. I reinstalled Windows and it works like a charm except for Family Safety. Web Filtering is not working...I said only allow sites on allow list and use that list only but I can still go to any site on the account...any ideas?

I have to do 3 profiles:
-Programmer
-Media
-Office
So, what do you think are the most appropriate packages for every profile?

@QuicoLlinaresLlorens What do you mean by profiles? Create separate accounts with programs related to those categories?

1:25 PM
Yes that is

what OS?

there are 9 OS I think

9!!!

like.. Windows server 2016, MacOS sierra, FreeBSD

@QuicoLlinaresLlorens That is too broad to answer here and also on the main site.

1:26 PM
OS Linux Debian: Programmer Codeblocks, g++, gcc, python, java
Im not sure I understand the question...you have to write an essay about what you would but for those categories on 9 different OS types? What class is this?

I think it will possible to use the same programs in every OS. Or not'
?*

no

Depends some things like Codeblocks work on Windows and Linux

@QuicoLlinaresLlorens Maybe. But mostly not. It depends on the programs and the OS.

you need to go away and try it

1:28 PM
Other things like MS Word only work with MS

Aww i missed the fun conversation about ARP yesterday
and arp tables and mac addresses and routers

@NULL MS office is available on all OSes now

man.... feels bad bro

including android and iOS

Really? we can talk about that @GuitarShoeDave

1:29 PM
Yes, but the idea for a programmer would be what you said @NULL I think

Lets talk about arp poisioning =)

Codeblocks as editor, and some compilers

Ok! Well to be honest I am not as familar with arp as about MAC spoofing and routers etc...whats arp spoofing?

Actually I have a busy day today.
I would assume arp spoofing is spoofing other peoples mac addresses on a network to attempt to evesdrop packets.

oh ok yeah
Well does anybody no about what I posted above? :
Family Safety this time. I reinstalled Windows and it works like a charm except for Family Safety. Web Filtering is not working...I said only allow sites on allow list and use that list only but I can still go to any site on the account...any ideas?

1:32 PM
But arp poisioning is essentially a race condition when a router sends a broadcast across the network asking who owns a particular local address and expects a mac address response and you have a 2 machine's respond but you're hopeful that the drone machine answers first.

ooooh.... horizontal fracking.... plays smoooooth jazz and turns on the soft focus

what?

because the router has to know which mac address it needs to rebuild the packet to send the packet to.

Yeah but so what I got last time we talked about this was that that was impossible b/c packets are encrypted
you would have to know the key to unencrypt packets?

hmm not sure
only the data portion is encrypted
not the actual headers
ie: mac / src, dest, / src port / dest port / seq num / MSS, etc.

1:36 PM
Oh right
Have you ever tried cracking WPA handshakes?

I got me one finally but I have tried at least 10 million paswords via dicts and still haven't go it
got it*

Havent attempted to do any WPA cracking

oh

I know WEP can be done in minutes.

1:38 PM
Pretty darn hard...yep I wish people used WEP still lol

A lot of mobile hotspots still use WEP (quite funny)

yeah
So maybe you could explain this to me:

Possibly, i donno.. Whats the question

Why can I not get MAC of already connected client, spoof it on my PC and connect to router...router wouldn't know the difference...I could deauth the other client if needed...but it dont work
And I cant find why

You can spoof it, but if its not a bound interface the packet will be ignored when its sent to you by the nic.

1:42 PM
@QuicoLlinaresLlorens Programmer depends on what kind of programmer. A web developer for example would need a web server and may a database ...

I know but how does it know its not bound since it cant tell diff between one that is already bound?

remember, before we had switches and used hubs all machines would recieve packets, and nics that werent intended to recieve certain packets would ignore the traffic because it wasnt bound for them ( lots of broadcast traffic )

@GuitarShoeDave See my answer
1
A: How does ARP Poisoning work if the IP address is wrong?

DavidPostillHow does ARP Poisoning work if the IP address is wrong? It's normally called ARP Spoofing, but also referred to as ARP Poison Routing (APR) or ARP Cache Poisoning. ARP Poisoning doesn't change the IP destination in the table so why does spoofing the MAC under another IP address help to redir...

You should still be able to see the traffic if your interface is set to promiscuous mode
@DavidPostill: been quite familiar with arp posioning for about 15 years or so.
Thanks though

@DavidPostill So if you got ARP Poisoning working you could use the victims router right or only intercept trafic?

1:46 PM
Ill read it anyway, just to critic you =P

traffic*

Bob
@PotatoCat Hm. Google Pixel. Compared to the S7, it's... kinda meh. Especially since it's actually priced higher, almost a year later.

@GuitarShoeDave You said "I would assume arp spoofing is spoofing other peoples mac addresses on a network to attempt to evesdrop packets." My answer covers that as well :)

pfft =P

@NULL "The attacker may choose to inspect the packets (spying), while forwarding the traffic to the actual default gateway to avoid discovery, modify the data before forwarding it (man-in-the-middle attack), or launch a denial-of-service attack by causing some or all of the packets on the network to be dropped."

1:48 PM
"forwarding the traffic" is quite common if you're gunna be doing any arp posioning. Ideally thats what you would only be doing with arp posioning.

Yeah but so he cant just use the network like a regular user?

Bob
also these review sites are worthless
one claimed the S7 has USB Type-C
*looks at phone*
NOPE

@Bob: have you seen the moto z play? I just got one of those.. Its type C and the dev kit is amazeballs.

@GuitarShoeDave pretty sure they don't sell em here, but I could be wrong
Annnnnd the Pixel is only IP53. bleh.
