7:00 PM
I think I missed a meme

@randal'thor : Continents are obsolete in a sleepless world. :-)

I googled for "anything about sci fi", here's what I got:

@Praxis What about overnight? It doesn't always take long for things to heat up.

20th Century Fox has renamed "Alien: Paradise Lost" to "Alien: Covenant"

COUGH COUGH

7:01 PM
So...
anyone else looking forward to Mockingjay Part 2 this week?

@randal'thor : The most problematic hours are perhaps not when you think they are. 8 pm to midnight GMT is the worst, if you look at when major eruptions have happened.

guys. take it to your magical secret mod room, hash it out there, and if necessary, bring it to meta

@randal'thor : Basically, the evening UK time has been the time with the most clashes.

it's really hard to move on from a topic when the room owners are the ones bringing it up.

@phantom42 : With all due respect, I was asked to come in here and make a statement because YOU GUYS were discussing room owner appointments here.

7:02 PM
OK, time to stop. Topic change, now.

@Praxis Which is when most people other than you and Slytherincess are around :-)

just. stop.

OK. Star Trek, anyone?

So I am filling you all in, in the place you are discussing it, so that you know what is not on the table and what could be on the table for the very near future. :-)

Anyone play GuildWars 2?

7:03 PM
i'm out.

@ryan Nope. Any good?

@ryan i did a bit, i had a max level left on my account by a hacker

no... i played GW1 but never GW2
that was forever ago

@ArtOfCode yea, I played it when if first came out, but I just started getting back into it
it's pretty fun

7:04 PM
as in i got hacked, they leveld a char to max, and i recovered the account and had a max level lolol

Um. What is it?

it's an MMORPG
GW1 was a no-subscription-cost thing; you bought the software and there was no monthly access fee

You forgot the scare quotes around "RP" ;)

I'm also out. For RL reasons though, not because of anything in this room :-)

@MikeEdenfield GW2 is the same

7:05 PM
it had a campaign that was really just a thinly-disguised excuse to level up your skills for PVP

What about Rift? Anyone else play that?

so I just finished reading a complete list of all the changes Lucas made to the Star Wars movies between releases

played rift as well
and startrek online
and star wars the old republic
ect

among other things, I find it hilarious that they felt the need to remove Jango head-butting Obi-Wan in episode 2 only in the UK

I really liked Rift, it kept my attention the best after WoW

7:07 PM
the only MMORPG I played since I quit Guild Wars was Elder Scrolls Online.
which I really liked but not enough to keep paying for it.

Aaand I'm also out. No house-burning.

Well, I'm out for now too. I came to said everything that I wanted to say / what I was asked to say, but I didn't exactly get the "respect" that elected room owners for Mos apparently command. Bye guys. :-)

I'm a huge fan of the TES lore, but there was only so much new stuff in the MMO

@MikeEdenfield I love TES games but I haven't played TES online

@Praxis it's not that we don't respect you, we're trying really hard to do what we've been told.
oh, nm.

7:08 PM
If TESO was just an elder scrolls game with lots of people, it'd be awesome fun for the first five minutes.

Running around in Skyrim/Oblivion has sucked up many many of my hours

@Praxis I, for one, really appreciate you making a statement and clarifying the issue and would like to let the matter rest there for now.

Then we'd all be stuck with dead characters, crap we couldn't sell because the vendors had no money from being robbed blind with a jar on their head, and guards swarming the place.

@Praxis sorry it felt that way, hopefully you understand that we've been given some contradictory directions and that was our best guess about what compromise would be least catastrophic

@Axelrod and former guards with arrows in their knee
but yeah.
making the storyline on TESO work where you're simultaneously special and also one of 1billion people was a bit quirky

7:10 PM
@MikeEdenfield @Ixrec : I understand that, but we're not machines, are we? When I'm coming in to make an official statement on the matter, I think we can put aside the directive for a moment.
I was done making it a while ago. You guys seem to be having a good chat, so see you later. :-)

@MikeEdenfield How's the crafting in TESO?

it's pretty good.

Similar to Skyrim?

So, my memory's all mixed up. What MMORPG was it with the dark elves and good graphics?
For research purposes.

@ryan you have to find the crafting stations around the world.
@ryan there's some in the various towns but there's also crafting stations in hidden locations that let you craft sets

7:13 PM
@Axelrod WoW, TESO, Neverwinter, and D&D Online all have "dark elves".
@MikeEdenfield huh, interesting. so is TESO worth 50 bucks?

if you're a fan of TES games, and MMOs, then yes.
the PVP is pretty cool, it's a capture-the-flag type things.

I have heard about the jankyness of trying to shoehorn a TES game into an mmo, which is why I've stayed away from it.

kind of a capture-the-flag/tower-defense hybrid.
it works out pretty well.
there's some issues with the fact that it's set in a time period where the races didn't really get along.
especially the beast races

Oh? it's set before oblivion and morrowwind?

oh, yeah.
way before.
Second Era
pre-Tiber Septim, I believe

7:16 PM
Oh, yea didn't know that
My biggest problem with MMO's now is that I Raided in WoW, at a crazy level, like 30 hours a week, competing for world first boss kills level. Since then everything has seemed sorta 'meh'.

> The game is set on Tamriel in 2E 582 during the Interregnum, a period of time between the assassination of the Last Potentate, Savirien-Chorak, and the rise of Tiber Septim, where there was chaos, bloodshed, and no Emperor on the Ruby Throne.[2]

@ryan after wow everything is Meh

the problem with the setting is that you get to choose to play as any mer race... including the Khajiit or Argonia

@ryan until blizzard makes a new mmo

which, according to the lore, would basically have been treated like animals if they wandered into some of these regions in the 2nd Era

7:20 PM
@MikeEdenfield but they hate each other... and the humans hate them even more before Tiber...

so like, there's a zone set in the Argonian swamps but it's full of Dunmer and Altmer.
and there's Khajiit in Breton etc.
the NPCs are treated like dirt but the PCs are treated like heros.
it's jarring
if you're in it for the story, that is. if you just like PVP, it's not bad.

@MikeEdenfield Is there any end game PVE?Or is it all PVP?

there's a good campaign.
in fact I only went into PVP once.
the endgame is one of the Daedra Lords, I think. I never got there.

So how do they deal with the items that normally sit everywhere in TES games?

@ryan So why not WoW?

7:26 PM
Is every bookshelf just empty?

Q: A brief statement on room owners for Mos Eisley

PraxisThis is just to let everyone know that, after some discussion with the moderators, we feel that new room owners should be elected by meta, rather than in real time during chat. If such elections happen, they will not be right now. There are still issues to be dealt with before moving forward. ...

Q: Question about dealing with multiple relevant tags

RadhilI've spent some time trolling through the tag system (been bored) and updating any blank entries I might be a fan of. Found myself eyeing the Mistborn section and trying to presume "how it should be working" with the author tag, the series tag, the subseries tag, etc.... led me to search and fin...

Sheesh. I go away for the weekend for a ballroom competition and the site gets nuked from orbit. I guess that was the only way to be sure.

I'm with you on that, Tango. shrug But it's no huge skin off of my back. I just need to remove the old chat site from my address bar history so that it doesn't keep suggesting it.

Q: Force to stop Fire

Hannover FistI was looking at some crap quality merchandise on Amazon for our IT department's Cutthroat Christmas gift. I noticed there was something called a Force Awakens FlameTrooper. This seems to be a Storm Trooper with a Flame Thrower (awesome). Is there a Jedi force to thwart an attack of fire? It s...

@SeanDuggan I would hold off on that for a couple of days.

7:44 PM
@MikeEdenfield you didn't answer my question about bookshelves :(

I missed it.
oh.
no, those things are mostly static.
there's not nearly as much immersion
no spoons either, IIRC

@MikeEdenfield what!? you can't mess with everything?

not so much
the game does change state for you as you progress
but that leads, for example, to you watcing a bunch of lower-level people stand around talking to thin air where an NPC used to be

Wow, that sucks. I love coming back to an abandoned fort weeks later and looking for where I hid all the stuff I thought might be useful, but I didn't have room to carry.

you still get to rob houses

7:47 PM
Oh good

that's actually your primary source for crafting materials
and other related goodies

They just instance the houses so everyone gets their own copy to rob?

basically.
everyone gets to rob the chests once every so many hours

guess that's the best you can do considering just how much you could steal in regular TES games.

^ how i feel chat feels

7:52 PM
So, I'm a programmer, but I work next to a bunch of sales guys, gah I hate listening to sales calls.
"You're the very first person I've ever done this for"...
Really...

user132126
Smarmy!

user132126
I once had to do a "first" on a customer service call

user132126
Person called in because they didn't get their LEGO order, but it looked like they'd screwed up and given us the wrong address. It was being shipped to their work, so kid wouldn't see it.

user132126
But they failed to verify their other address correctly (it triggered a possible fraud flag)

user132126
So, the order was essentially cancelled, right before Christmas.

7:56 PM
@CreationEdge that sucks.

user132126
This was an escalation, so after I took the call I dug a little deeper, and found that one of the agents didn't release the order after verifying the address :0

user132126
I sent them the $130 set overnight free of charge, and let them know in a voicemail (couldn't reach them)

200
ewps.

i did not say anything in a mean spirit, if anyone was offended feel free to remove/flag anything i said

Ana
Be Nice and don't ruin this space for everybody else.

user132126
7:58 PM
@MikeEdenfield 500!

NO. NO FLAGS
please.

@MikeEdenfield Don't use magic numbers!

@Himarm I think if you just apologize and promise not to do it again we'll all move on in peace.
which you did. so moving on.
sheesh. look away for 5 minutes...

It's because you used magic numbers, they ruin everything.

Q: looking for name of two movies

bat prime1 one movie is two nerd teens stumble upon alien suits suits make them superheros, while dealing with real problems being bullied in highschool, nerd boy and girl use alien suits to fight off aliens who want there alien suits back to take over earth,. what is name of this film? it was in year 80 ...

7:59 PM
its not a magic number.
I was testing data entry software.
10-keying

@MikeEdenfield gross.

i concur

I don't think "peace" includes having a gun pointed at your head.

user132126
@Axelrod Take it to meta or somewhere else.

testing data entry is the worst.

user132126
8:01 PM
@MikeEdenfield Data entry killed my hands :(

user132126
@ryan No, doing data entry is the worst!

user132126
Low wages, high repetition, all boring

@CreationEdge I will. Enjoy your occupation in the meantime.

@Axelrod It should be obvious to everyone here by now that this particular community has a fairly strict set of standards that we should all adhere. Disagreeing with them does not justify violating them.

@CreationEdge I've avoided doing that so all I have for perspective is testing data entry

user132126
8:03 PM
@Axelrod I don't do that anymore, thank goodness.

@MikeEdenfield That wasn't the case three days ago.

but again. no rehashing 3 days ago.
forward progress

@CreationEdge I meant military occupation, but I'm glad you got out of that.

@CreationEdge I only have to do it for ~half hour, I just need data to run reports against.
unfortunately that means I'm not very good at it
a real data entry person could probably breeze through these things in minutes

I only know how to 10 key because I used to be a manager at a pool and did employee schedules with 10 key.

8:08 PM
the worst is when you're sitting there going "man this software is terrible, who wrote this garba--- oh. right, me."

user132126
@CapyStenchbeast Why, hello.

user132126
@MikeEdenfield Haha. At least most data entry specialists don't know who to shift the blame to.

user132126
I once figured out a way to make a process go from 17 entries an hour to 41 entries an hour, all by changing the order the data was input and tabbed through.

@MikeEdenfield I've had that unfortunate occurrence happen as well.

user132126
Pretty redonk to get a 240% increase just by changing the order

8:11 PM
@ryan have you ever said it out loud while doing a demo for the CEO?
<---- did.

@MikeEdenfield haha, no I've avoided going that far...
I have said it out loud to myself
but you win for embarrassment levels.

I believe my exact quote was something like "Man, I don't remember this [censored] being so hard to use back when I wrote it."
so 1. swore in front of CEO, 2. call our flagship product a bad name, 3. took blame for it.
and I still work here.

lol, that's the most interesting part of the whole thing.

arrr

@MikeEdenfield did anything at all happen to you for saying that?

8:18 PM
our CEO is super chill. and no customers were around.

ah, gotcha

and I volunteered to fix it.
:)

Ah, there's the key

@MikeEdenfield Can't imagine you being the guy who wrote said thing isn't a big part of it.

Just FYI, Capy is just lurking, so don't expect a response.

8:21 PM
Can he respond?

@Axelrod Nope. He's respecting his suspension. If you really need to talk to him, he's hanging out with us in the M&TV room. Please don't bring any drama there, though :D

Aw man... I saw this and I got so excited, thinking it was SF&F...
http://stackoverflow.com/election

Anyone who wants to read my spoiler-free review of "Sleep No More", Saturdays found-footage style episode of Doctor Who, can now do just that.

@DrRDizzle I was wondering when you'd get round to putting that up :-)

@randal'thor I was busy over the weekend, so it's somewhat delayed. I'm sure both of my readers will be heartbroken ;P

8:25 PM
[goes to read]

@Catija Which one? There's 3...?

Q: Removing flagging (and thus relieving mods of the need to babysit)

AxelrodEveryone has seen what happened to Mos Eisley. The mods have better things to do with their time than sitting in our chats, and we'd all have a much better time if they didn't hover around and censor speech in rooms where "off topic is the topic", as it were. Essentially, the only people who s...

@Axelrod Screening Room is our primary room.

Gotcha.

@DrRDizzle You're so negative... :-P

8:28 PM
@randal'thor It wasn't very good though!

user132126
I've been watching this D&D/Pathfinder session on YouTube, and it really makes me want to get into tabletop...

user132126
But I want to use my LEGO minifigs for miniatures

@DrRDizzle That's not an objective fact! :-) I thought it was excellent.

@CreationEdge There's nothing stopping you from doing that.

user132126
Well, really, the first barrier is finding a group to learn/play with that works with my school/work/parenting schedule

8:31 PM
@randal'thor I just couldn't muster up the effort to care about what was happening, why, who these characters were, what the monsters were, why it was found-footage etc. It just lost me from near the start.

@CreationEdge If you know anyone that plays, talk with them. Otherwise, maybe talk with friends in similar situations and if that fails there's always game places that have groups.

user132126
I know no one! But I've wanted to get into for years, but never really saw a good session to get an idea of what it's like. Now I'm more motivated.

user132126
There's 2 card/comic shops in town I think I can connect with though.

Go for it, man. But be aware that Pathfinder may be rougher on the wallet than a previous edition.
3.5E, for example, has nearly everything online. Pathfinder is based on 3.5.
I believe they refer to it as "3.75"

user132126
No idea. I used to have a lot of 3.5 stuff that I acquired...

8:34 PM
Then you know that D&D books are prohibitively expensive.

@DrRDizzle although I tend to be more forgiving, I'd agree this was not one of the better episodes of the season so far
it entertained me at least

@DrRDizzle Admittedly it's quite hard at the end of the episode to understand exactly what happened, but it puts a great twist on the found-footage genre and the underlying concept puts it up there with "Are you my mummy?" for DW scary greats (IMO).

Welllll not so much now that you're gainfully employed for real wages.

user132126
@Axelrod I never said that, lol. I am poor, by the books. I'd have to borrow books or find a way to get them cheap.

user132126
I'm a non-traditional student now, so I work a low wage, low hours, and mostly subsist on debt.

8:37 PM
@randal'thor Concepts usually work better if your audience understands what they are BEFORE the end credits have finished though. Gives you time to actually play with it.
@Ixrec I think its probably the second worst so far.

@CreationEdge Then my previous statement stands.

user132126
Yup.

user132126
My wife would be down to play, but if I DM'd it'd be just her, not much fun.

Why just her? Get a group going first.

user132126
Only person I know that's immediately available, lol

8:43 PM
oh my GOD
my SSRS has a virus
how does this happen?!

Go to one of those groups!

Thumb drive killed the office I worked at a few years ago

@MikeEdenfield When you connect on the internet, you're connecting with everyone the internet's connected with.

user132126
@MikeEdenfield That sounds like it's going to be time-consuming.

@CreationEdge I'm not looking forward to it. somehow, the auto-generated pages used by the ReportServer for managing report have had javascript injected into them.

user132126
8:53 PM
o.o

@MikeEdenfield I blame php

it's .NET

Same thing
ruby/node > .net/php
:)

@MikeEdenfield still blame PHP
are we talking about code now

9:14 PM
sure, it's relatively safe

is hackers on topic?

user132126
@phantom42 What a terrible movie, lol

(i dont have a question, just trying to gauge)

@phantom42 it's about as fictional as harry potter so sure.

@phantom42 My usual answer to that is 'go ask a question, and we'll find out'

9:17 PM
i was mostly just trying to bring coding to on-topic

It's Sci Fi, specifically.

and also because we were talking in AoN about what the tech limits are when it comes to on-topic

Hypothetical future tech level coding.

@Axelrod And technology? I think the specs for Acid Burn's laptop weren't feasible for something that size at that time.

@Keen Bingo. Solid sci fi, just low grade.
It's like comparing Middle Earth to the Forgotten Realms.

user132126
9:21 PM
What about Masterminds with Patrick Stewart ?

what about sneakers

Also yay for me getting that character's name correctly by memory. Boo to IMDB for having a useless cast listing. It completely lacks their hacker handles!

sometimes I'm tempted to try writing some story involving programming to see if I ca make it interesting without throwing out any semblance of realism

@phantom42 Well, since in the modern day we still don't have boxes that can break any and all encryption, I'd say so.

@CreationEdge Has Patrick Stewart been in anything that wasn't sci-fi or fantasy?

9:22 PM
or do we?

:O

technically, they still haven't proven that one-way functions exist
so maybe

@Axelrod terrible itv police series

user132126
@Axelrod Good point. Patrick Stewart is on topic.

user132126
Even his appearance as himself, like in Extras

9:23 PM
robin hood men in tights

@Pureferret If it's fictional, it's fantasy. If it's fictional with advanced tech, it's sci fi.

Q: suspensions with no notice

HimarmI was recently Suspended with 0 reason or notice on chat. I would like a mod response to this. As far as i know the only issue ive had was with a simple,"thats what she said joke", which after reading the recent mod posts about whats applicable in chat, meets those requirements. It is also someth...

For other series with this name, see The Eleventh Hour. Eleventh Hour is a four-part British television series developed by Granada Television for ITV by writer Stephen Gallagher. It follows the adventures of Professor Ian Hood (played by Patrick Stewart), Special Advisor to the government's Joint Sciences Committee, who troubleshoots threats stemming from or targeting "scientific endeavour." He is joined by Rachel Young (played by Ashley Jensen), a Special Branch operative who acts primarily as his bodyguard, as Hood has made powerful enemies through his work. The first episode was broadcast on...

@phantom42 Fantasy. Have you seen Cary Elwes?

moby dick

9:24 PM
I suppose it may have had some Sci fi

i claudius

@phantom42 Fantasy entirely. White whales biting off limbs and hell's heart being the location of stabbings.

lots of stuff from his early career

@phantom42 Historic fantasy

ignoring stage work, of course
voice of napolean in animal farm, which we have specifically deemed not sf/f

9:29 PM
All court rulings are enforced until overwritten by another court ruling.

user132126
@Axelrod I guess our policy is that historical fiction and the like, such as Robin Hood, isn't necessarily fantasy?

@Axelrod I'm pretty sure he was in some Shakespeare, does that count?

user132126
Himarm and I would talking about Redwall last night, and since it's just medieval fiction with animals instead of people, it might not be on topic?

animals are on topic unless they are in Watership Down

user132126
@MikeEdenfield I dunno, some Shakespeare has magic and ghosts, ie Hamlet

9:34 PM
this is true.

user132126
@MikeEdenfield Haha, nice.

and Tempest ?

All of Shakespeare's work is fiction.

well, yes, but is it science fiction or fantasy fiction?
some of it is clearly fantasy.
but not all of it.

user132126
Right, but I think for the stack we're not inclusive of all genres of fiction

9:37 PM
Historical Fiction & Fantasy SE: For all your "why did Shakespeare make X this way?" needs.

@MikeEdenfield pour quoi?

user132126
@Pureferret Because @Himarm wants to ask Watership Down questions.

@CreationEdge and if I do too?
😝

user132126
@Pureferret Not my policy! Check with Mike.

How am I ever going to know what Watership Down is about if you guys won't answer my questions about it? /s

9:46 PM
@Axelrod only started reading it at one of those book exchanges

@Pureferret Is it fairly sci fi or fantasy? I only ask because if I googled I'd be putting more effort into it than asking on stack exchange. /s

@Axelrod fantasy, along with made up language

user132126
Is Watership Down about the rabbit farm Lenny would have had?

user132126
Is it actually a fantasy world inside his head?

@CreationEdge Lenny?

9:52 PM
@Pureferret Of Mice and Men

user132126
@Pureferret Of Mice and Men

@CreationEdge jinx

user132126
@ArtOfCode Jinx, you owe me a soda/pop

user132126
OH!

jinx again
:D

user132126
9:53 PM
*is jinxed*

Speedy typing is worth it occasionally.

That should keep things quiet in here...

Heh.
It's ok, I'm not that evil. I don't prevent people from talking unless they're being annoying.

@Pureferret Ferret pics in a sci fi setting or it didn't happen.

user132126
I tried to type too much

9:55 PM
heh, I just threw it out

user132126
Then I hesitate because I couldn't decide what you owed me :( It was my undoing.

user132126
@Pureferret Is that a ferret?

@CreationEdge yes

9:56 PM
@CreationEdge Nah, definitely a furret.

user132126
Furret just sounds right.
