their textbooks are designed by some educational committee and there are no requirements to be on it. Recently the head of the committee was a creationist bent on getting creationism into the curriculum.

I'd suggest requiring some kind of education that has to do with developing curricula for being on a board that determines it, but sadly, I know people in that field and most of them are pretty much as dumb.
