can I not italicize the end of a word?

Probably, yes. And you can probably use HTML tags within a word.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 great models there, but it really takes a SW fan to appreciate them. I mean, I now sort of recognize most of the vehicles, so it's cool, but show them to me just a couple years ago and I wouldn't've been anywhere as impressed.
I don't think HTML tags work in chat.

<strong>here's how to find out</strong>
yeah.

@GeorgePompidou are you suggesting they say "grammatical correct" instead? Wut?

no, I'm not sure what my problem with it is.

2:02 PM
@RegDwigнt You're probably relatively unique among AFOLS for not instantly recognizing Star Wars ships.

it's just unusual. don't people usually just say grammatical

@GeorgePompidou cool, now there are two of us. The club is growing.

also, correct sounds so strong.

@GeorgePompidou Probably.

well, you're wrong.

2:03 PM
@GeorgePompidou actually on the main site you will find no shortage of comments from passersby who would never use "grammatical" that way, and insist that no one else does, either.
Strange folks.
But anyway, that's what the outside world looks like.

So your beef is that "Grammatical" implies "correct"?

kind of like that "had" vendetta man.
no no, my beef is that correct is really strong, and most situations don't call for it
say something is incorrect. is it really incorrect? or is it just awkward sounding/not standard/weird/poorly worded
etc.

Yeah correct is useless clutter when you've already specified it's grammatical, which is more precise anyway.
@GeorgePompidou inverse jinx.

can none of us talk until someone touches a doorknob or something now?
or do I have to punch you 30 times?

29 will do. Or 31. But never 30.

user116848
2:06 PM
@GeorgePompidou But when you are mean to people here don't you think that's strong?

beats you up with his 60lb hippo footies

@Arrowfar I don't think you've really seen him mean, he can do better.

^(Oo)^

So mean is a bit strong. :P

mean people should not teach

2:08 PM
That's why all teachers are below mean.

user116848
@RegDwigнt So you both are allies. I see. Helping each other :D

bullshit; my best professors are mean.

or above mean

well, define mean first

@Arrowfar I am not helping anyone. I simply don't have time to be helping, because I am too busy not helping.

user116848
2:08 PM
Yeah, mean people are bad teachers. I hate mean teachers.

ahaaa. that took me a while to catch on.

@GeorgePompidou Merely average.

@GeorgePompidou seven.

yes yes.

> Unionized vs Unionized
I've read that title eight times trying to find the difference.
Then I clicked through to the question and it's about pronunciation.

2:10 PM
gets dizzy

Facepalm.

pronunciation vs. pronounce really annoys me.

user116848
I heard the saying once: "Love promotes knowledge"

I always feel like pronunciation was spelled by an idiot.

@GeorgePompidou If something can be "grammatical" and something else can be "ungrammatical" can those not be synonymous with "grammatically correct" and "grammatically incorrect"?

2:11 PM
@Arrowfar that's hillarious

no!
I mean, fine, if you wish.
correct is too strong to me.

user116848
@JSBձոգչ :) You think?

with how annoyingly liberal Englishists are.

@RegDwigнt but there are 9 letters to compare

and just in general too.

2:11 PM
@GeorgePompidou correct => it conforms to the grammar

and just on what authority do you define the word as such?

@Arrowfar love promotes ignorance. shees.

you're crazy, man.

@GeorgePompidou what else could it mean?

it means the opposite of what you are right now.

2:13 PM
Ignorance does not promote love.

words mean what we want them to mean

@skullpatrol But they also mean what other people want them to mean

but I say what I mean

Congrats, you have just found out how language works.
With that done, we can finally talk about chinchillas.

YES. CHINCHILLAS.

2:15 PM
30
A: If I invent a word, what language is it?

Mr. Shiny and New 安宇Language is a consensus between the speaker and listener. Lots of English words (arguably most of them, but let's not get too technical) originate from other languages. Words like "orange" or "beef" or "feng shui". Because the speaker and listener are speaking the same language, and the words ...

Awwwww.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 thanks for sharing that.

morphemes is a drug. they gave me morphemes at the hospital once for my migraines.

@JSBձոգչ That looks like some anime-obsessed Japanese geneticist was screwing around with mouse-rabbit hybrids

2:16 PM
I don't know what that guy's on about.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 that is what all chinchillas look like.

@JSBձոգչ That must be how they came about then.

Pika-pika-pika-chunchulla!

my friend dragged my fancy laptop across a table and now its little rubber footie pads are worn out and it's slipping all over my desk.
these are my problems in life.

2:18 PM
This day is a great day, I must find a way to celebrate. I made JSB use not just caps, but ALL CAPS.

CHINCHILLAS
srsly

Hey BTW I'm not buying your book if it has no caps. I was already let down by e.e.

oh, my book has caps. i promise

Aww.
@GeorgePompidou That sucks!
Maybe you can replace the pads?

makes a small fuss
those are really cute, but baby hedgehogs are cuter.
is getting a baby hedgehog

2:26 PM
@GeorgePompidou You should murder that friend, then grind up their body, and extract the useful chemical compounds from it, then synthesize new feet for your notebook.

@Cerberus I'm making a fuss because while I can replace the pads, I will not on principle because they will probably cost like $3 billion.

oh! now there's critical thinking.

Or just mummify your dead friend's feet and attach those directly to the notebook.

I'd hire you Mr. Shiny. you're good.

But if all you want is the feet, you can just amputate them without the murder.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Then again, human skin is great material to prevent slipping.
@GeorgePompidou Perhaps not! It should be fairly simple: get some non-slip material, attach with super glue.

2:28 PM
@Cerberus Sure! Why not. Use whatever parts you find. Bonus points for elegance or rube-goldberg-creativity.

Rube-goldberg?
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 But why not murder when you have an excuse?

user116848
What are some alternative ways of saying “You understand me?” and “You hear me?” as a rhetorical question that we say when we are angry and pissed. After a sentence that is.

Do you get it?

@Cerberus In this case, the friend can serve as an object lesson to all your other friends.
A Rube Goldberg machine is a contraption, invention, device or apparatus that is deliberately over-engineered or overdone to perform a very simple task in a very complicated fashion, usually including a chain reaction. The expression is named after American cartoonist and inventor Rube Goldberg (1883–1970). Over the years, the expression has expanded to mean any confusing or complicated system. For example, news headlines include "Is Rep. Bill Thomas the Rube Goldberg of Legislative Reform?" and "Retirement 'insurance' as a Rube Goldberg machine". == Origin == Rube Goldberg's cartoons became well...

I feel kinda bad that my text editor of choice keeps prompting me to pay for it, and I never will. and it will keep letting me use it for free.
I want to pay it but I simply cannot bring myself on board with spending the absurd $70 on a text editor
my operating system costs $70 less than that.
am I a horrible immoral idiot?

2:30 PM
@GeorgePompidou You could just switch to one of the free ones.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 But what is a better example to set, murder or amputation?

no no; I like this one.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Ah.

@Cerberus The amputation lesson lasts longer, as the friend will stick around and serve as a warning to new friends.
Assuming you have any.

@GeorgePompidou No, they are idiots for not understanding price elasticity.

2:31 PM
right?
cretins. is that an English word?
my mother always says it but she's Romanian so it may be wrong.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Well, you can have your murdered friend "stick" around on a stick.
Like in the old days.

@GeorgePompidou Yes. It's those crunchy things in soup.

ah yes, it is. good one, Mom.

Even carry him around.

no no, those are Cretans.

2:32 PM
Tsk.

Cretinism is a condition of severely stunted physical and mental growth due to untreated congenital deficiency of thyroid hormones (congenital hypothyroidism) usually due to maternal hypothyroidism. == Etymology == The term cretin was once used to describe a person affected by cretinism, but, as with words such as spastic, and lunatic, it is now considered derogatory and inappropriate. Cretin became a medical term in the 18th century, from an Occitan and an Alpine French expression, prevalent in a region where persons with such a condition were especially common (see below); it saw wide medical...
> The etymology of cretin is uncertain. Several hypotheses exist. The most common derivation provided in English dictionaries is from the Alpine French dialect pronunciation of the word Chrétien ("(a) Christian"),

interesting. in Romanian the two are a single letter apart.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Are you calling me a cretine?

I wonder how many other derogatory words are etymologically related to "Christian"
@skullpatrol What's a cretine?
Maybe I'm calling you creatine

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 The term cretin was once used to describe a person affected by cretinism, but, as with words such as spastic, and lunatic, it is now considered derogatory and inappropriate.

2:40 PM
@skullpatrol Uh. yeah, I do know the word and did just read the wikipedia article I just posted.
I'm not sure why you would think I was calling anyone a cretin?

2 mins ago, by Mr. Shiny and New 安宇
Maybe I'm calling you creatine

@skullpatrol Um. That was a joke? because you misspelled cretin? And I said that after you accused me of calling you a cretin(e)? But cretine isn't a word? And when I googled it, Google suggested creatine, which is "a nitrogenous organic acid that occurs naturally in vertebrates and helps to supply energy to all cells in the body, primarily muscle."

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Probably more.
Especially in Antiquity, when the exotic cult was rapidly expanding.

guys, guys, everyone
I am hereby taking credit for the word cretin
I invented it in this here chat.

@Arrowfar "do you read me?" "Habla usted inglés?" There's a zillion. It really depends on how pissed off you are.

2:44 PM
@Cerberus It's not really fun if the word isn't used by traditionally Christian people, though. Sure, I bet, eg, the Muslims, have lots of words for insulting Christians.

@Arrowfar English, motherfucker. Do you speak it?

Also, I think you do mean pissed off. Pissed alone means "drunk".

@RegDwigнt In North America it can also mean angry

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Haha I have to agree...

I always say pissed to mean pissed off @RegDwigнt

user116848
2:45 PM
@RegDwigнt So any others can you give me?

and everyone I know as well.

See, so many people are wrong in here.
Especially George. He is wrong grammatically. Mwuahaha.

The extraordinary New World and its fascinating customs!

user116848
@GeorgePompidou It's my secondary language Motherfucker :) (Well, you used the swear word!)

@Arrowfar What ain't no country I ever heard of. They speak English in what?
it's a movie quote man.

user116848
2:46 PM
It's okay

I can't remember from which movie. it wasn't terribly impressive.

Q: "Pissed" vs "Pissed off"

ianjsIn Australian English there has always been a distinction between "pissed" (intoxicated) and "pissed off" (angry, irritated). I've noticed a trend towards the American usage where "he was really pissed" is now much more likely to mean the latter. I'm aware of the futility of resisting the nat...

@Arrowfar No, that's a quote from Pulp Fiction, and a thing you can say when you're mad at someone who doesn't appear to understand you.

ah, yes.

I guess the transmarines don't use pissed to mean "drunk".

2:47 PM
nope. we just say drunk. unless you're a meathead, then you say the likes of hammered and fucked up.

@RegDwigнt In fact I have heard people say pissed drunk

@GeorgePompidou nice trolling. I give you a 6 out of 10.

because they want to use pissed, but by itself it more often means angry

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 hey drunk people have to piss, too.

@RegDwigнt a lot, usually

2:49 PM
Q to the E to the something.

Then there is wasted...

also for meatheads.

My friend from Trinidad used to say stoned to mean drunk.

that's just wrong.

And what's a non-meathead word for "meathead"?

2:49 PM
Not in Trinidad it isn't

*ain't

I don't think I've ever heard meatheads say meathead

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 well George right here is using "just wrong" to mean "just right".

"Should I use 'or' or 'nor' in the following case?"
without looking at it, probably xor.

Everything is possible.

2:51 PM
How would you define a "meathead"?

yeah, I'm ironic
a guy who says hammered and fucked up to mean drunk

@Cerberus a head that is only good for meat, not thinking.

a guy who thinks intoxication of any sort is in general a virtue.

Basically like Meatloaf but without the singing.

Meatloaves don't sing, Reg

2:52 PM
@GeorgePompidou 1.1 Very drunk

@skullpatrol I see.

1.1 is after 1 though, is it not?

@GeorgePompidou about hot patooties they very much do.

@MattЭллен Ah, would you use it that way?

depends on how you order them

2:53 PM
you mean heat pateetoes?

And good morning!

depends on how I order them?
then I am correct.

@Cerberus no. I only use it to mean high on weed. My parents probably use it that way. My grand parents certainly used it that way

second line in that thumbnail looks like "soul, I really love that cock"

2:55 PM
@MattЭллен Ahh OK, so it is old! Funny.

Please post more of your Freudian slips and knickers.

@Cerberus :D

@GeorgePompidou Freud will be pleased.

it wouldn't be freudian if I did it intentionally.
so patience, Reg

@MattЭллен Drunk old people are funny.

2:56 PM
yeah :D

They even smell funny.
That's how funny they are.

the older you get, the funnier you look

I've gotten so old lately.

Eww.

I've gotten old last year but then I decided to stop.

2:58 PM
I think it'll be a while before I'm too old to get old

So I converted myself to LEGO and now you will have to endure me for at least another 600 years.

Only 600?
I thought Lego was hardier than that.

Well, that's when you die, silly.
Meanwhile on the main site not one but two people think that "the mid point of the diagonals" is plural.
I think I need a drink.

make it a double

Sorry, I of course meant to say they think that "the mid point of the diagonals" are plural.

3:02 PM
Two people is singular, and therefore inconsequential.

My bad. English is such a difficult language.

*are

Yes, yes, okay, English is such are difficult language.

Perhaps Matt's double drink are not such a bad idea.

Gosh.

3:03 PM
Correct!

doubledrink
it's like doublethink but when you're drunk.
much easier.

I can't wait until Tuesday. I'm going to buy one or two of these:

and stage an invasion of the USA?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I was just going to ping you about how tomorrow is AFOL Day and I'll be getting the suit.

@RegDwigнt what. You and your AFOL day.
I want AFOL day!

3:06 PM
The suit, Ghostbusters, the Mini, and whatever Mixels they still have (they pretty much sold out and no new are coming).

@RegDwigнt Unfortunately, all of the potential duplicate questions are ambivalent on the matter.

Adam's Full Of Lard day

Hah.

Also from the August catalogue it appears that I'll still be getting Worriz's bike and the mini Mini as freebies.

I'm getting the suit(s), the Ghostbusters, the scientists, and my daughter is doing the monthly mini model build

3:07 PM
@AndrewLeach you don't have to close it. You can answer it correctly.

Oh. Effort.

We have tons of questions on notional agreement but that's the whole point that I don't think notional agreement is an option in this case.

@RegDwigнt When I bought the mini I didn't get the other freebie that was on at the time. But it was some lame minifig so I didn't care... until I later saw that those freebies appreciate in value a LOT and I can potentially sell them for big bucks.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 the science lab is out? Not here it is not.
The exo suit, on the other hand, has been on the shelves for weeks.

@RegDwigнt it launched today, along with the suit

3:08 PM
Presumably if you sell a freebie, its value has increased by a factor of infinity.

what. no. The suit JUST launched today!

While according to Brickset it is only officially released today.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I myself held it in my own hands two weeks ago.
Then put it back to wait for the AFOL day.

@RegDwigнt madness!

controversy in the LEGO kingdom

The internet is all abuzz about the suit's launch

3:10 PM
Well. Good thing I don't live on the Internet, but in the suburbs.
Nobody was buying the 41000 Crawler in my local store, either.

I wonder if someone at your local store put it on the shelves by mistake

I could have gotten five.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 even so they'd have at least two weeks to notice.
Also, why would TLG send them out two weeks ahead of time? Storage space is very precious in these tiny stores.

huh.
Well, I dunno. But all the info I've seen has said it was an august launch.

all the Lego stores I've seen are giant.

Seen the same info myself. Shrug.

3:11 PM
Hell, there're even people making jokes about staying up till midnight last night just to be able to place the order on SaH

@GeorgePompidou not if you have to keep two hundred of each set in the back. You wouldn't believe how fast you run out of space.

Anyway, the suit is out today and so is the lab

Well I hate the lab and probably won't be getting it.
But if it's really out today I guess I must hurry and make my mind up till morrow.
Or just wait till November for the next AFOL Day.

wow on SaH the Exo-suit is out of stock
I wonder if I shouldn't go tonight to the lego store to try to get one.

Also, I have 85 Euros worth of VIP points. I am thinking of making it a clean 100 before spending.

3:13 PM
in my Lego store they have a wall at the back with bubbles of various Lego pieces sticking out of it.
it's nice.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I heard it was a single production run. When gone, then gone forevah.
Then again it was the same sources who said it would be released only today.

@RegDwigнt That's why I'm thinking of buying multiples

@GeorgePompidou that's what they have in every LEGO store. It's called the PAB wall.

are you a Lego store expert?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I actually don't know, are there so many rare parts in there? I think it's just a couple. And in bley to boot.

3:14 PM
makes a little fuss

@GeorgePompidou to the extent that I know what a LEGO store has to look like, yes.

@RegDwigнt The point is that people will pay big bucks for the set once it's not available.

and how much space there is in the back.
that's more suspicious.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I gave up on that thinking a long time ago. I have yet to resell a single set. Too much hassle.

@RegDwigнt I tried to avoid thinking like that. Then I discovered that the mini VW polybag is selling for $30
It makes no fucking sense

3:16 PM
steeples fingers everyone has a price

So I'm trying my luck at selling my high-value new-in-box sets

Also, I am not sure how attractive that set really is. Some AFOLs might drool over it, but they'd be getting it themselves. To the average customer it's probably meh. And there's no shortage of very similar bots TLG bring out every year.

@RegDwigнt Nah, it's way better than any mech/suit TLG has ever made.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 oh cool. I have that one. Sealed.

And far more complex than what's normal for a system build
I wonder how many suits like this they will ever make.

3:18 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 see, you say that as a mech/suit aficionado. But most people are not mech/suit aficionados. I for one couldn't care less. It's exactly the same as the others to me.

@RegDwigнt Well, I'm not really an aficionado. But I can see that the complexity is like 50x what lego usually makes. I have a few mech-like sets. They are so-so.

I think the mini VW polybag has a printed logo tile in it. Exclusive to that one set to boot.

I mean, look at the Lex Luthor mech from a few years back. Or the Sentinel in the latest x-men kit.

I don't think the mini polybag has anything of that kind, so it will not get anywhere close.

@RegDwigнt I think it's a sticker.

3:20 PM
K. Still sorta limited, though.

I looked at the parts list for the mini VW bus and I honestly cannot understand why people pay more then $5 for it.
I wouldn't even pay $5.

Aye, a sticker it is.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 well, polybag collectors.
I am not one myself but I can see the seduction.
Seductiveness?

But most people don't know about bricklink, or can't be bothered to track down pieces from various vendors, so I can see paying a bit more for the set. But check the BL price guide. It's nuts!
Even people on BL are paying high prices.

I mean, to get these polys you typically have to buy stuff for 55 bucks in the first place. So.

3:23 PM
And I myself am pretty much at the point where I'll willingly pay to not get more LEGO.

Most of the other freebie polys are not so much $$ in aftermarket.

I mean, that's what I'm doing on Rebrickable and Bricklink: figuring out how to pay X bucks for not an entire set, but a small subset of it.
In the end it's quite typically the same price.
So I'm literally paying for getting less.
Because no room left at all.

heh
I'm currently finishing up my restaurant moc then disassembling everything: the cinema, the haunted house, my moc, maybe the sopwith. I need to gauge how much storage space I actually have left, as well as make room for new display things

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 well clearly a VW camper is of a broader appeal than Stephanie's market stand or what have you. No surprises there I would guess.

@RegDwigнt I guess I just don't understand why people like the VW camper so much? They are paying $20 for a single sticker.

3:27 PM
No idea. But the whole point of the large set was to appeal to people who were not into LEGO at all. So maybe the same is true of the smaller set. VW lovers, not just LEGO lovers, are after it.

It's just so bizarre to me.
@RegDwigнt But how much do those VW lovers love their VWs?!?!

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 yeah I am afraid to take any of the stuff on display apart, for fear of realizing how much less space I actually have than I'm already thinking.

@RegDwigнt Let me spoil the surprise: you're screwed.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I dunno, but what's the going price for an oldtimer? The polybag is a drop in the bucket.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 oh I am so screwed.
And I still have like 20 sets unopened in the cellar, and around 80 more at work.
That's actual sets, not polybags.
Of polybags I easily have another hundred.
This has been getting out of hand for far too long.

@RegDwigнt When I started putting my lego into my storage bins, that was also when I finally got around to parting out all my old SW kits that had been on display. That made such a huge difference that I had to rethink my whole system before I'd even started buying bins yet.
Yeah that's a different problem. Why even have those unopened sets? Set up a BL store and sell them.

3:30 PM
Ah no, they are for myself.
I will build them.
I just save up the pleasure. Prolongue it.
Had I built them already, I'd have none left, and then I'd have to buy even more new stuff.

I have 22 unopened sets, excluding one unopened CMF that I'm saving for Christmas. I will build two or three of the unopened ones, give some of them to the kids, and the rest I'm going to sell.

This way, I can sort of contain myself because I know if I want to build, there's always a fine selection I can choose from, so I don't need to buy new stuff.

@RegDwigнt Um. You are still buying new. You need to work through the old, or else declare inbox bankruptcy and just start over.
@RegDwigнt ha. Does that stop you from buying? be honest

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I am not sure it does, but something does. Looking at the cold numbers I've definitely slowed down, and by a lot.
Which is a good thing.
I can't wait till I finally stop buying and start moccing.
I mean, that was always my whole point: collecting as many parts in as many colors as possible so I could build anything at all in any color at all.

3:34 PM
I mean, yeah, I keep some sets aside for building later. Or buy some sets for parts, then decide that I don't need those parts right now. But eventually I forget I had that box of parts, and I just build without it, or accumulate those parts elsewhere, and then the kit becomes old. And more valuable to sell than open.

It's just that I never started with the building. Still only just collecting.

@RegDwigнt Yes, I had to do force myself to actually complete a moc. I almost completed it. I wanted to build a modular building before I built the parisian restaurant. I made myself get a lot of it finished.

Right. A modular seems like a good project.
I should do that.
Cuz otherwise the inspiration is just never coming.

It helps if you know what kind of building you want to make. I'd started a modular a while back but wasn't sure what kind of store/building it would be.

I am sitting right next to the Parisian Restaurant MISB, by the way. Was meaning to build it this week before my wife returns on Saturday.
Now it's sort of too late. I'm wondering if I should rush it and build it tonight, or save it up for later.

3:37 PM
A modular is also good because a lot of them are basically dollhouses. You can build a basic "home" and then spend a lot of time furnishing it.
@RegDwigнt It takes a while to build. Maybe 30% longer than the cinema

Yeah the cinema was dull.

LOTS of little pieces
I liked the cinema. I wish it had a bit more interior detailing though.

Not quite as repetitive as the Grand Emporium, but still.

Q: Indefinite Plural VS Indefinite Singular for stating general facts, properties, etc

cp_nonameIs there any nuance in the two sentences below if I want to state a general fact about cars ? A) Cars have 4 wheels. B) A car has 4 wheels. The question above is also a question to itself. So can I say "...if I want to state a general fact about a car" instead of ".....cars"?

This is totally a dupe. But good luck trying to find the original...
