3:00 PM
A nation of adolescents is like a nation of grasshoppers with no ants.

I'm saying your "mental age" will eventually have to end with your "physical age" like it or not.

Some people remain adolescents their whole lives long, this is true.

Imma upload you into a computer!

But it is hardly optimal.

Or is the correct spelling ima?

3:01 PM
@tchrist we are not building rockets here :-)

No, we are building a society.
Or some of us are.

this has a lot to do with your gene pool and enviroment

No, I don’t think so.

why not?

An adolescent takes no responsibility for themselves, and therefore cannot be entrusted with others’ responsibilities either.

3:03 PM
5 mins ago, by skullpatrol
so?

A certain amount of social responsibility is necessary for a cohesive family unit and a coherent, functioning society.
In fact, it is even necessary for the simple matter of holding a job.
You have to treat things as an adult to hold a job. For long.

In my opinion, "social responsibility" is a myth made up by rich people.

@skullpatrol a clear sign that you have neither riches nor responsibility

I’m sorry you think that way.

that's a weird opinion

3:06 PM
Call it personal responsibility then.
Start with yourself.

that^ is different

Is it?

completely

Responsibility is responsibility.

one person compared to the entire society?

3:07 PM
The child is not responsible.

social responsibility is acting in a way that shows that you respect society and are trying to be part of the solution

That’s right. It doesn’t mean you are taking responsibility for world peace.

individuals act in a way to maximize their OWN benefit
Darwin's Law

That requires responsibility.
This is why children have custodians.

for yourself

3:09 PM
That requires responsibility for the social context in which you exist, and of which you derive personal benefit.

only if it benefits you

Pay your taxes, vaccinate your children, take out the trash, go to work on time, brush your teeth, vote your conscience, don’t drive drunk, pay your bills, keep your word.
Cui bono?

yourself, in the long run, that's who

Yes, and that’s part of social responsibility.

ok, so we agree :)

3:16 PM
If believing that makes you feel better, then you don’t understand social responsibility.

I believe the glass is not half full nor, is it half empty; it is twice as large as it needs to be QED

@JSBձոգչ That cover looks sweet. That's not for the one that I read, right?

@KitFox no, that's for an older one
the one you read won't be out till next year at the earliest
i suppose i should post it to chat, eh?

If you are so inclined. It is supercool.
Eeee.

Thanks :D

3:26 PM
Who did the art?

@KitFox Streetlight Graphics
i forget the name of the actual artist

I like Trajan.

Is this one self-pub?
Oh, they did Caged Blood too, didn't they?

1) no 2) no

3:29 PM
Well. I thought I had seen that site before.
Hmm.

^ these are the guys publishing the book
and the cover for Uncaged Blood was done by a friend of mine in Romania

I dislike the inconsistency in their bottom quadpanel.
@JSBձոգչ Oh right. And I realized I'm thinking of another something-light-something, but it's a publication, not a graphic design company.
@JSBձոգչ Is that your author pic for the back cover?

@KitFox i think so. i also sent them a headshot which they may use

You look different than I picture you. I think your hair is longer in that picture.
Of course, there was the crazy bushy beard picture.

i've been growing it out

3:33 PM
But that's not the one I was thinking of. Can't quite put my brain on it.

Is that duct tape on your bike?

it's actually my neighbor's bike, and probably

@JSBձոգչ Ah, artistically broody.

3:35 PM
It must be almost as hard to choose a picture as it is to choose a title.

i'm not thrilled with any of these pictures
when i go to romania i'll get my photographer friend to help me out
with some much better pictures

@JSBձոգչ That's a nice picture. But I wouldn't have recognized you!
I thought your hair was red, and you had a beard!

@tchrist Even worse, when you type something, your brain naturally spells it correctly, so you have to go through the extra step (or steps) of remembering which stupid way it was misspelled.

@Robusto Tell about it.

And it hurts to misspell on purpose.

3:40 PM
It does.
Deeply.

It's like deliberately singing off-pitch. Hard to do, and when done successfully it sucks anyway.

@Cerberus i had a beard ~4yrs ago when my son was born

@Robusto Exactly.

i have never had red hair, though

Hmm perhaps it was the lighting. Or my memory.

3:41 PM
My hair used to get red highlights in summertime.

At any rate, +1 for the new look.

Not anymore.

my beard was red, which was weird

@Robusto I bet they were expensive at your favourite salon.

@JSBձոգչ Looks like Hugh Grant surveying the Sunset Boulevard clientele.

3:42 PM
@JSBձոգչ Clearly a sign.

@Robusto just what i was going for

@Cerberus My favorite salon was outdoors; hairdresser: the sun.

I know, I know.

Imagine you have a bunch of method calls involving the word purpose, like get_original_purpose or reroute_purpose, but that sometimes it is spelled purpuse, sometimes purppose, and sometimes perpose. Oh, and now and again it actually is purpose.

The idea of your going to a barber to get highlights is just so amusing.

3:43 PM
@JSBձոգչ That's not uncommon for certain genetic groups, right?

There is no way to remember which is which.

@KitFox that sounds racist

@tchrist Hilarious. But you need to delete "a much".

@tchrist you're making me cry

@JSBձոգչ I didn't mean it that way. I meant like Irish, where you can have black hair and red beard and it's not weird.

3:44 PM
@JSBձոգչ Even Jesus would weep.

@KitFox i was kidding. and i am irish ancestry, so yeah?

@KitFox It's too late, you have offended everybody.

And you cannot fix these.

@KitFox you'll have to go on CNN and apologize

@JSBձոգչ So it's not that weird...?

3:44 PM
It makes you hate the people who have done this to you.

@tchrist I deal with database tables like that.

@Cerberus I'll blame Putin.
He put me up to it.

@Cerberus do you speak for everybody?

@skullpatrol Yes, often.

@tchrist get a god language and ide and you will not even notice

3:45 PM
:)

@KitFox i guess not. everyone in my family except me and my dad is redheaded. i guess i only got the beard gene.
@JohanLarsson don't you dare correct that. much funnier w/ the typo.

@JSBձոգչ I make that typo ~30% of the time on that word.

@JSBձոգչ My brother didn't get one of those until he was mid-twenties.

@JohanLarsson IDEs belong to the problem set, not the solution set.

@tchrist Have you seen this?

3:48 PM
I wonder how well that works.
Especially with video.
Because then you can see the eye rolling.

everybody is an expert >8(

@tchrist so needs to be the Perl mentor.

I'm an expert, I can do anything

@skullpatrol Clearly.

@KitFox It has potential imo, the biggest hurdle is probably ordering it from work.

3:51 PM
@Cerberus and concisely?

If that was easy it could be great for example when starting with something new.

i should sign up to do that. i could mentor.

@JarvistheBot I think you're pushing me away because you fear you like me too much.

@Mitch Oh, it's you again...

@JSBձոգչ lemme know if it works well.

3:52 PM
@JohanLarsson i probably won't try it soon, though.

@JarvistheBot That's less enthusiastic than I expected. I guess you're trying to hold back.

i have successfully driven the errors in this test suite down to ~20 from ~900

@AndrewLeach yeah he probably has a decent chance of being accepted.
@JSBձոգչ whoa, errors must be 0 at all times, broken windows etc.

@JohanLarsson yes. that's why i'm not done yet.

is there a way you can do categories for separate runs?

3:54 PM
@tchrist There's also the second childhood, which, I'm coming to find, is not really much of a metaphor.
I that they act not like kids but outright childish.

@JohanLarsson almost all of them are in one module, which i'm currently looking at

@JSBձոգչ I could send it out to my group that works with your product.

@KitFox strokes chin thoughtfully

Or...maybe just set you up with some consulting work...
Hmm.

problem is that i'm actually not very familiar with the end product
i'm always working on the internals

3:58 PM
Interface, right? iirc.

@KitFox correct.
these days it's javascript

Then I can't pick you brain about the propriety data structures.
:-(

our javascripts are still proprietary!
anyway, meeting

@tchrist but that makes a case for IDEs where it will help you find official labels of 'alternately' spelled items.

@Mitch Band-aides stretched across gaping wounds filled with toxic sewage.

4:13 PM
You say that like it's a bad thing.

Your perspicacity is showing again.

!!wiki perspicacity

Perspicacity (also called perspicaciousness and perspicuity) is a penetrating discernment—a clarity of vision or intellect which provides a deep understanding and insight. In the 17th century, René Descartes devised systematic rules for clear thinking in his work Regulæ ad directionem ingenii (Rules for the direction of natural intelligence). In Descartes' scheme, intelligence consisted of two faculties: perspicacity, which provided an understanding or intuition of distinct detail; and sagacity, which enabled reasoning about the details in order to make deductions. Rule 9 was De Perspicacitate...

OFFS

your silver tongue is showing again :-)

4:16 PM
Tala är silver, tiga är guld.

I was unaware there were ten-year-olds amongst us.

I thought you heard about the ... oh.

@JohanLarsson You know Mayan?!!

@Mitch over my head

@tchrist I have lived ten years
@JohanLarsson haha. any thing unintelligible to me might as well be Mayan.
Speech is silver, silence is golden.
For platinum you have to play it by ear.

4:20 PM
or just stay home?
@Mitch you have that in English? It is a Swedish proverb, might be a translation.

@KitFox gaping wounds do not sound good. but surgical staples and crazy glue will do the job.

@Mitch Skin glue?
@tchrist buzzfeed.com/robinedds/… - although some of the pictures were not.

@JohanLarsson in English: youtube.com/watch?v=n03g8nsaBro

@skullpatrol :)

4:35 PM
@IceGirl Hi!

@skullpatrol Hi

@IceGirl how are you?

@skullpatrol Thank you u?

@IceGirl Fine thanks

@skullpatrol What's up?

4:37 PM
@IceGirl not much, how about you?

@skullpatrol Nothing special

icic

fine

good, good

Zoe
4:39 PM
I'm chewing ice right now

@Zoe Oh, nice

Zoe
@IceGirl and watching legend of Korra

@Zoe chewing ice is not good for your teeth
@JohanLarsson :)

Zoe
PURPLE YAKULT TASTES LIKE MILD COUGH SYRUP OH GOSH REGRETS
2
@IceGirl I know, but been chewing for so long. Slightly addicted to it.

Try making ice cubes with gross flavors.

4:42 PM
@Zoe :D

Zoe
@KitFox That would stick up the whole fridge!

@skullpatrol :(

Zoe
and do not have the resources to make them

@IceGirl what's wrong?

@Zoe Not gross smells. Just gross flavors.

Zoe
4:43 PM
@KitFox Dont have the time nor resources to make them. Water is easy though.

@skullpatrol falling down

If you have time to make ice cubes, you have time to put peppermint extract in them.
Or garlic juice.

@IceGirl while you're on the computer?

@KitFox Hi
@skullpatrol no

@IceGirl Oh, you fell down?

4:45 PM
@skullpatrol While walking then fell down

I'm offering because you were looking for suggestions.
@IceGirl Hi.

icic

@skullpatrol unfortunately yeah
@skullpatrol Did you see me?
:)
:D

Zoe
@KitFox But putting peppermint extract or ginger juice takes extra steps while putting water and chugging it into the freezer is just routine :/

@IceGirl where?

4:47 PM
nowhere

@Zoe Then you don't really want to quit chewing on ice.

just joking

icic

@skullpatrol :)

@IceGirl :)

4:48 PM
@skullpatrol one question

Zoe
@KitFox But the thing is, im not the only one using the ice, the freezer is shared.

@IceGirl askaway

@Zoe You could put beet juice in them.

Zoe
@KitFox I guess not but it would be nice to have this distraction

Then people would know not to use them.

4:49 PM
@skullpatrol what is the difference between "walking" and "go walking"?

@IceGirl not much difference

Zoe
@KitFox :O that would be selfish! what ice would they use if they needed to

@skullpatrol can you use each of them in the sentence?

@Zoe The ice that you aren't eating right now?

Zoe
@KitFox Haha, at night I actually eat all and refil them so it would be full in the morning :P
I do not knw if this is slight OCD but if i have ice in the freezer, i need to eat all of them

4:53 PM
@IceGirl "I am walking" "I need to go walking"
I don't like the sound of the second one

@skullpatrol Oh well.

@skullpatrol OK

You could just go walk instead.
But the other is ok, too.

5 mins ago, by Ice Girl
@skullpatrol what is the difference between "walking" and "go walking"?

Zoe
To me, when people use "I need to go walking." I treat it as singlish. Why not, "I need to take a walk."?

4:55 PM
5 mins ago, by Ice Girl
@skullpatrol can you use each of them in the sentence?

Zoe
Hmm

I can ask it ELL
@skullpatrol ask?

@IceGirl sure

Zoe
Well, I know I can parse "I need to go swimming". However, swimming, running and other such activities are specifics. But walking, playing aren't. I don't like "I need to go walking" just like I don't like "I need to go playing"

@Zoe You may have a valid point there.

4:58 PM
I need to go walking. It's part of my exercise regimen.
I need to go play. I'm feeling wound up.
I think it's the activity.

Zoe
Well, to explain in a way that I understand, "go" is paired with an activity rather than an action?
