Q: What Bracha do we say on Mashed Potatoes.

user6781What bracha do we say on mashed potatoes? Does it matter how mashed etc? (I am thinking that it will be either Hadoma or Shehakol and it depends on how mashed but that is just unsourced and a worthless guess.) (My question you could say is: Is mashed potatoes Hadoma or Shehakol? And the reaso...

You always know if a question is from Judaism, because every second bratchl is something you've never hlompered before.

There I posted my skeptic question skeptics.stackexchange.com/questions/22490/…

@Robusto I'm sorry I said Jasper left the site because of you. That was factually incorrect. I am not sorry for saying you were mean, because you were. You were an asshole for pointedly ignoring him and then making fun of him after he left. And I don't think Jasper leaving the site is "dire consequences", but I do think that you are enjoying winding up as much attention as possible from being called out on it.

@kwak a solid question until, I'm afraid, you come to the actual question. I mean, the answer to the question as stated is basically "Why not? Two entirely different things have two entirely different temperatures. No surprises there!"
So I'd add a sentence or two saying "I would expect them to have the same temperature because blah", or "I would expect it to be the other way round because bloompr", or something.
Also, are you insterested specifically in toasters or specifically in cigarettes?
Because in the former case, I'd rather compare it to something comparable, like the wire in a light bulb say.

Because toaster heating elements are made of metal and cigarettes are made of tobacco and chemical additives.

Yeah, or just "cuz different" for short.

1:11 PM
@RegDwigнt ok

@KitFox Also, that should be our next Skeptics question: "do cigarettes actually contain tobacco?"

@RegDwigнt cigarettes, I wanted to compare cigarette ashes to toaster burned bread parts

Are bananas really yellow?

@MattЭллен I've seen a black one on the road this morning

They're too ripe when they're yellow.

1:13 PM
@kwak ah, see, that's a rather crucial bit of information! Totally do include it.
@MattЭллен bananas are made of the same chemicals cigarettes are made of, except the former are painted yellow and the latter white.
@AndrewLeach nonono, you mean cucumbers.
Bananas are too ripe when they are black.

@RegDwigнt I sense a consiracy. So are cigars like freeze dried bananas?

I am smoking a banana right now, will report with results.

Some people used to smoke the dried peels of bananas, remember?

@RegDwigнt Is copper foil really superior to tinfoil for blocking harmful mind control rays?

Copper is a better conductor than tin, isn't it? Supercooled copper is even better.

1:19 PM
@MattЭллен cigars are bombs, smoke bombs
Nazis had thought of using them

That's Nazi's for you. Always up to no good

But when they had no more Zyklon B, they rather used their cars to provide gas in gas chambers and not cigars, more expensive at that time

@KitFox So, basically, you're saying you're sorry I'm such an asshole. Noted. I'm not sure what you hope to gain from such a non-apology apology, but it might be best if you just leave things as they are and move on with your life.

@Robusto No, you read that wrong. I'm not sorry you are an asshole. I'm sorry I stated incorrect facts.
I'm not hoping to gain anything, I just want you to be pissed off for the right reason.
Instead of the wrong one.

You can both be pissed-off at me, if that will make you feel better :D

1:22 PM
Because you are hung up on me saying something incorrectly, rather than paying attention to the part where I said you were behaving incorrectly, which is irrelevant to whether the other stuff was correct.

Is someone really good in WWII history that could confirm what my dad told me, he really said some concentration camps used their truck exhaust pipe as intoxicating gas

Ah, condescension is such an improvement. Thank you. Of course I will welcome you back.

So, Jasper says he didn't leave because of you. That doesn't mean you were not acting like a jerk.

If you persist in addressing me I will have to put you on ignore.

@Robusto I don't want you to "welcome me back" (ironically condescending, cute). I want you to not behave like a jerk.

1:25 PM
Perhaps you have me mixed up with someone who gives a shit what you think.

@MattЭллен that's Nazi's what for me? Don't leave us hanging like that.

@Robusto You don't have to like me, you don't have to speak to me, you don't ever have to be my friend or give a shit what I think. You do have to behave in this chat room and on this site, because I am a moderator here. Whether you like it or not, them's my rules.

@AndrewLeach Neither one is much use on a train.

@Robusto In a Faraday cage, you don't really need a tin hat. Or a copper one. But there's no harm in wearing one.
So I'm told.

@KitFox As I recall, you are the one who keeps badgering me. And it's interesting that you arrogate to yourself the "rules" for behavior here; and here I thought this was not meant to be an autocracy. Hey, you don't like me? Fine. Ban me. Get my account deleted, if you think you have the horses for that.

1:28 PM
I wish there was a similar thing as Faraday cages but for gas and smell

@AndrewLeach I was making a joke involving train conductors versus current conductors.

@AndrewLeach Faraday gave great lectures, So I'm told.

@Robusto Oh. Sorry. I find written jokes difficult.

@AndrewLeach The Christmas lectures at the Royal Institute, have you read any?

Not read any. They're broadcast on TV though.

1:31 PM
@KitFox If you're still hot to delete stuff, can you delete this room? rooms/15496/room-for-c-c-and-medica, please

@Robusto That's so funny, since you seem to think everything I do has to do with you. And that everything that happens to you has something to do with me. I don't get this insanity.

Hello everybody, I need to ask a quick question.

You're the one who keeps talking to me.

@kwak It's already deleted.

Gosh people. You're really going to go down spirals because of Jasper? I could understand if it were because of someone like Cerberus. Or because of a woman. But Jasper?
First-world problems.

1:33 PM
What's the meaning of "often a precursor" in this text?
"What have the scientists learned? Let’s start with arguably the most feared disease of old age. Following almost 1,000 people (age 80, on average) for up to seven years, Dr. Boyle’s team found that the ones with high purpose scores were 2.4 times more likely to remain free of Alzheimer’s than those with low scores; they were also less likely to develop mild cognitive impairment, **often a precursor** ."

Look up often and precursor.

@KitFox oh ok

@RegDwigнt It wasn't because of Jasper. It was because he was ignoring Jasper and telling him to go away, then after Jasper went away, he was making fun of him. I think that's obnoxiously rude.
@Meysam Something that usually happens before something else.

Yes yes I heard that a couple times by now. I am sure Rob heard it a couple times more.

@KitFox that was my google cache maybe :) thx anyway

1:34 PM
Still, it is Jasper. You should take life just as lightly as he does.

lol

@KitFox So I guess "cognitive impairment" is what happens before "Alzheimer" here, right?

@kwak You can probably still enter it if you are a room owner. I can freeze it if you don't want that.
@Meysam Yes.
@RegDwigнt There is a great deal of irony there.

@KitFox Thank you :)

@Meysam no problem

1:36 PM
/o/

@KitFox I know, and you should know that that is how I roll.

\o\

@RegDwigнt Like thunder.

!!youtube thunder struck

1:37 PM
Anyway. I am not even interested in how it began, I'm interested in ending it.

i have been trying for weeks

Well, not that interested cuz I didn't have breakfast yet.

See, problem is that Rob thinks I'm deleting his stuff now, which I had nothing to do with, but he just can't believe I didn't.

I think it's time to quit. There's no more explaining of this.

If he would let that go, I'd be perfectly happy to continue not talking to him.

1:38 PM
Not sure why anybody is deleting anything at all. No deleting anything in this room.

(removed)

There's a whole Meta post about it.
Pretty much explains everything.

Gah, then I'm certainly opting for breakfast first.

You had better.
I plan to take a shower.
I already broke my fast.

18 mins ago, by skullpatrol
You can both be pissed-off at me, if that will make you feel better :D

@skullpatrol Tried that. Didn't help.

@Robusto Right, the ironic retro thing. I get why it's funny to wear a shirt from the 80s to a party once, but I don't get why they will eventually begin wearing it daily!

I noticed.

As to Harvard, somehow "Harvard 2002–2006" does not seem very ironic.

Hi @Cerberus

1:44 PM
@Cerberus When everything is ironic, nothing is.
2

isn't that ironic?

Alanis Morissette

That's a non-irony.

That is star-worthy because true.
@skullpatrol Hi!
Meanwhile, I see someone has been trying to improve something while seemingly doing the opposite.

I tried :(

1:50 PM
@Cerberus My bad. I should have kept to my policy of refusing to interact with those who wish me ill.

never again is what you swore the time before?

@Robusto Oh, well, it happens to the best.

@Robusto What makes you think Kit wishes you ill?

@Cerberus Like me! Oops, I shouldn't say that.

ill wishes?

1:54 PM

let the skeptics handle it

yes :)

I'm skeptical of that site

Does it really exist?

they are skeptics at heart

1:55 PM
@MattЭллен you can't be skeptical about Science
or if you are, I'm worried

The only way to be in science is skeptical

@MattЭллен A seemingly never-ending pattern of antagonistic behavior.

I hope Kit is not marabouting you then

Haha what is that?

!!wiki marabout

1:57 PM
A marabout (Arabic: مَربوط‎ marbūṭ or مُرابِط murābiṭ, "one who is attached/garrisoned") is a Muslim religious leader and teacher in West Africa, and (historically) in the Maghreb. The marabout is often a scholar of the Qur'an, or religious teacher. Others may be wandering holy men who survive on alms, Sufi Murshids ("Guides"), or leaders of religious communities. Still others keep alive syncretic pre-Islamic traditions, making amulets for good luck, presiding at various ceremonies, telling the future, and in some cases actively guiding the lives of followers. The common practice of receiving gifts...

I preferred the French article.

Haitian Vodou (/ˈvoʊduː/, French: [vodu], also written as Voodoo /ˈvuːduː/; Vodun, or Vodoun /ˈvoʊduːn/, etc.) is a syncretic religion practiced chiefly in Haiti and the Haitian diaspora. Practitioners are called "vodouists" (French: vodouisants [voduisɑ̃]) or "servants of the spirits" (Haitian Creole: sèvitè). Vodouists believe in a distant and unknowable creator god, Bondye (likely derived from the French language term Bon Dieu, or Good Lord). As Bondye does not intercede in human affairs, vodouists direct their worship toward spirits subservient to Bondye, called loa. Every loa is responsible...

@Robusto That seems greatly exaggerated. There are a couple of heated exchanges since the mistake about Jasper.

@kwak Yay!

@kwak i knew a person named Kwak once

2:00 PM
!!wiki alfred j kwak

@MattЭллен I think her behaviour was weird, but I don't think we can help here and now...

Alfred J. Kwak (小さなアヒルの大きな愛の物語 あひるのクワック, Chiisana Ahiru no Ōkina Ai no Monogatari: Ahiru no Kuwakku/Quack) is a cartoon television series based on a Dutch theatre show by Herman van Veen and was co-produced by VARA, Telecable Benelux B.V. and TV Tokyo and first shown in 1989. It consists of 52 episodes. The series characters were designed by Harald Siepermann. There are also toys and a comic based on the animated series. The series has been broadcast in many countries and has been dubbed and subtitled in Dutch, French, Japanese, Greek, English, Italian, Spanish, Hebrew, Arabic, Hungarian, Finnish...

we often say "marabouter une personne" means actively influence her either negatively or positively, with "sorcery"/magic means

Yay Alfred!

@MattЭллен Why is she sticking-up for jasper anyway?

2:00 PM
@Cerberus I disagree about the weird part, but you're probably right about the helping. I'll just butt out

I always watched Alfred Kwak as a boy.
You have come back!!
How is your black girlfriend?
She was kind of cute.

@skullpatrol why should someone stick up for another if they think they've been wronged?

@MattЭллен Haha OK.

you'll force me to change name again

Black girls can be nice, you know.

2:02 PM
@MattЭллен true, but don't bring your mod powers into it, imo

KitFox is black?

@skullpatrol she didn't

she looks pale on here avatar

Kit said something. she didn't do anything with mod powers.

nvm, I'll just butt out

2:04 PM
@MattЭллен She threatened with her mod powers.

小さなアヒルの大きな愛の物語 means something like "Little Ahiru's Big Love Story" . . . ahahaha

@Cerberus when?

check the transcipt ....my rules..

@skullpatrol I have. there is no mention of any use of mod power

Never mind.

2:05 PM
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 no fun

@Cerberus Thanks pal

I shouldn't get involved.

@Cerberus that's not what that means at all. athough I agree that making the rules out to be @Kit's alone is wrong, it's not about ignoring

2 mins ago, by skullpatrol
nvm, I'll just butt out

it's about being rude about someone

2:07 PM
W'evs!

about insulting people

again with the jasper thing?

I'm going to ignore the subject hehe.

he can take care of himself

@Cerberus Cerb, that's not what their argument was about. it was about what Rob said about Jasper
it's about asking people not to be jerks to one another

2:08 PM
That was weeks ago.

that will never happen^

@Cerberus yes.

@MattЭллен The point is, if someone had objected to my use of jasperlol in the beginning, and said, "Hey, please don't be rude like that," there would have been no problem. But in one's capacity as a moderator to accuse me of causing someone so much harm that that person actually deleted his account, and to persist in that even in the face of such a claim being patently false and later proven to be untrue, that is quite something else again.

@Robusto I think Kit dropped that accusation quite quickly

why are you talking like this is Law.SE?

2:10 PM
Jun 22 at 19:12, by KitFox
@Robusto OK I can't prove it, but I still disapprove of "jasperlol".

Trying to drive one's point home once again is not an "apology".

what's the big deal his last name is "loy" anyway

@MattЭллен "I can't prove it [but my accusation stands]" is what that reads to me.

it reads to me as "well maybe I'm wrong about that, but I still don't like the name calling"
but of course, I'm not caught up in it

You're not the one who was publicly accused. By someone with mod powers.

2:12 PM
Why couldn't she drop the subject already?

@MattЭллен You know, it's one thing for a citizen to say "You committed a crime" and quite another for a cop to say it.

let's all drop it
like it's hot

I keep trying to drop it. But somehow it keeps getting brought up, over and over. What is this, Groundhog Day?

!!youtube drop it like it's hot

2:14 PM
@Robusto That's true. It's diffiicult for mods to not be seens as mods, even when they don't want to be.

@Robusto Just ignore her.
A proven remedy.
Recommended by Alfred J. Kwak!

:D
It's my opinion that Kit wanted to tell you as an equal about how she felt about what you were doing.

Let's drop it.

How about them Palestinians?

@Mitch Have you seen "An Honourable Woman"?

2:18 PM
I hear another plane has disappeared, this time above Africa?

I'm not sure if it's being shown in the US

yea there are bigger problems like my use of commas and planes.

It's quite good

I've seen a couple.
Ha ha. What's it about?

Not commas!!

2:21 PM
@MattЭллен In my opinion she wanted to do me harm without accountability. And still does. My policy is not to associate with such people.

let it go
NOW

That would be outrageous!

8 mins ago, by Robusto
I keep trying to drop it. But somehow it keeps getting brought up, over and over. What is this, Groundhog Day?

Semicolons are as far as lll go.

@Mitch Well, there's a Jewish woman, living in the UK, who runs a multinational corporation, and is made a Baronness in the house of Lords. Then a Palestinian business man whom she is about to award a multimillion pound contract to is found dead, an apparent suicide. Then her life gets filled with all sorts of political intrigue and there's ssome back story about her being kidnapped in Gaza
@Robusto understood.

2:23 PM
@Robusto true dat

'Apparent'

Haha yes.

It's probably in the art theaters.)not the commercial ones$

@Mitch They should call that "absolutely not a" in films.

Uh they're all commercial.. The big brand theaters

2:24 PM
@Mitch it's a series, on the BBC at the moment, with Maggie Gyllenhaal in the lead

@Mitch You shouldn't go there.

Hi @Mahnax

Hello.

Go to small cinemas and watch non-mass-culture films!
Hello there.

@Mahnax have you given your speech yet?

2:25 PM
@skullpatrol Yes, back in June.

how did it go?

Well enough, I suppose. I sounded a bit nervous, but other than that it was okay.

Oh. It's probably non tv here too I just haven't noticed. My tv viewing strategy is. When I get the remote, to cycle through all the channels til I get to the least objectionable action movie and or animal documentary and switch between them.

Sounds like fun.

interesting strategy

2:28 PM
Cerb, I prefer the less commercial movies but lately they've been simply depressing
Or 'Fashion Police'.
Action movie, animal documentary. Same plot.

@Mitch Hmm haven't seen it.
I don't see films very often.

!!wiki Fashion Police

Fashion Police is an American television program airing on E! Entertainment Television. That's not a film?

2:37 PM
he did say "or"

@Cerberus it's annoying in police reports when they say 'alleged'. cuz everybody really believes that they did it (whether they did it or not)

Hehe.
I wouldn't say that.
It clearly indicates that he has not been convicted yet.

@Cerberus some 'mass culture' is actually entertaining

It is possible.
But the more mature films will also be shown in smaller cinemas.

'mature'...some really do come out like mass culture but for old people...
what was that movie with the four retirees visiting India? stop right there, don't tell me.
Wes Anderson movies, might be annoying but at least they're trying not to be stupid.
on the other hand they was some really clever dialog in Transformers. but most of the movie just hurt my eyes.

2:47 PM
Yep, the animated version of the transformers was better, imo.

ha ha. I missed that altogether .

what the cartoons?

yeah

too bad, they got me hooked
they did an animated movie also

they did 4 movies!
still doing more!
!!afk

2:52 PM
@Mitch Just go already!

@Mitch Some people never mature.

like me :D

@Robusto Tell me about it. The last job had dozens of spelling errors in the public API, much worse than HTTP_REFERER, because they would spell the same word one way one places other ways other places. You could not predict it.

there is a difference between "mature" and "grow-up"

@skullpatrol Wine matures, whereas corn grows up. People seldom do either.

2:55 PM
or they may choose one over the other

I’ve known plenty of adolescents who are in their 30s. Mostly unmarried.

but in the end we all die anyway, so it doesn't really matter what you choose

Actually, it does.

we don't all die?

Adolescent is a person who is between childhood and adulthood.

2:58 PM
so?

They still want the carefree irresponsibility of a child and have not yet accepted what it means to be an adult.
Without accepting that responsibility, they are not a fully functioning member of society.
