6:00 PM
@skiwi piece starts with a consonant, so it's "a piece of advice"
And no, it isn't "an advice" because advice is not a discrete noun.

@Donald.McLean Then that's my bad there on the latter one, and I've always been confused on whether the adjectives counted or not for the consonant-rule.
@BenVlodgi You mean not knowing whether it is C or C++? ^^ It looks like C to me, but I still got no clue

@skiwi that indentation... my eyes are bleeding

@skiwi There's no adjective there - it's a prepositional phrase. Adjectives do count though, you would say "a large onion" or "an ugly painting".
It's the word that comes immediately after the article.

Actually just now I saw that indentation, that's really uncommon
@Donald.McLean Thanks for clarifying that up :)

6:06 PM
And technically, it's the first sound of the word, you would say "an honorarium" because the 'h' is silent.

This switch statement hurts...
    switch (((const unsigned char*)buf)[0]) { /* ... */ }
You mean like anonorarium? (in spoken language)

@skiwi Exactly.

I planned to do other stuff exactly one hour ago.. Well, it's never too late.

English isn't really a language so much as a giant, mutated and heavily armed monster that lurks in dark alleyways looking to terrorize, intimidate, and humiliate anyone who tries to speak it.

@skiwi There have been some scathing reviews on OpenSSL code that have been published recently.

6:11 PM
I find german worse.

@Morwenn I'm not sure how, since a significant portion of some of German's predecessor languages have been part of English for centuries. :-)

At least, English does not have declesions.
And the verbs conjugation is quite easy.

Thanks for removing that comment, I was about flagging it

@Morwenn True, but English also has large slices of French too, just to completely muck up the spelling and pronunciation rules.

@Donald.McLean I have to admit that spelling and pronunciation are the main problems when learning English. But French pronunciation isn't always more consistent and the conjugations are plain horrible.

6:16 PM
When you hear "giant" and "mutated" used to describe the same thing, you're supposed to run in terror.

I tried to learn Chinese once.

@Morwenn Au contraire. French pronunciation is quite regular, but you're right about verb conjugations - that was one of the parts of French in school that used to give me nightmares.

English > Flemish/Dutch > German > French in my mind
easiest to hardest

Chinese tones, writing, and quantifiers are hard. Most of the other aspects of it are surprisingly simple, though.

Anyone ever study lojban?

6:20 PM
@Donald.McLean Well, even as a native speaker, if I don't know the words, I can't tell whether "ch" will be pronunced "k" or "ʃ".
@200_success I didn't have a problem with writing, but tones were too much for me.

As a native english speaker, I didn't know there were other languages
besides well you know.. programming languages

@Morwenn Well, I didn't say "perfectly regular". I don't think any real world language is completely regular in any way.

Esperanto?
Well not really a real World language though...

Yes, I was deliberately leaving out Esperanto, Klingon, and Lojban.

@BenVlodgi You obviously never tried to program in Linotte.

6:25 PM
@Morwenn nope

@Morwenn so what does a Celtic metal band sound like?

haha

Q: Class that handles header and footer includes looks like a mess but is it correct (OOP)?

Kid DiamondI tried making a class that handles my header and footer of my site. It looks like a mess, because I like to preserve the indentations as is. But I'm wondering if there maybe is an even cleaner / better way of writing this Class? <?php class HeadFoot { protected $title, $scrip...

@Morwenn it google corrects me. its not
linotte programming language
it is
linotte programming langage

6:26 PM
You are overly pedantic.
@Donald.McLean Basically metal with some folk instruments and sometimes traditional tunes.

@BenVlodgi ha, I think I've been there.

@Morwenn it is just interesting to see google realize that the only people searching for that, dont spell language in english

@Morwenn Love the melody, not sure about the vocals.

@BenVlodgi Of course, Linotte is in French.

@Undo really? I grew up 15 mins from there, everyone went to the Airway bowling ally accross the street for fun... small world

6:29 PM
@Donald.McLean Haha, the vocals are often criticized. That's death/black metal singing for you :p

@Donald.McLean You may be right ;_)

@Morwenn indeed I used da googles... but as an english speaker you don't often see that

@BenVlodgi It's the one that has that SR-9x plane, right? The big black one?

@Undo dude... no idea :D

heh
anyway, I bet it's the same place

6:30 PM
@Morwenn I don't mind metal singing as a general rule, but it has to follow whatever standards my subconscious mind has for "melodic".

@BenVlodgi I don't think anybody uses this programming language anyway. And it only exists for educational purposes :)

For example, the guy in Linkin Park who does most of the screaming (for songs that have screaming) is somehow able to "scream on key" (for lack of a better term).
2

@Undo Its in Kalamazoo Michigan.. if you've ever been there

That's because it's scream, not growl.

Ah, yup. Same place, @BenVlodgi
Grandparents live like an hour from there.
SR-71. Now I remember.

6:34 PM
The same rules apply to growls - they have to be sufficiently melodic. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.

^ You can just about reach up and touch this thing. It's awesome.

Most of the time, they don't. They often do the whole song on one note anyway, so the key problem kind of disappears x)

The stories about those leaking fuel while on the ground are great.

They were designed to leak fuel while cold, IIRC :P
Say, @rolfl, whatcha planning to put in such a blog if you were to get one for SR?

Well, technically, theywere designed to not leak when they were hot! But what happened when they were colde was besife the point.
We have a meta post about that ... ;-)

@Undo oh very cool, whereabouts? Gradrapids, battle creek, saint joe?
I don't remember seeing that... I should go back someday

6:37 PM
@rolfl sorry, my bad

@BenVlodgi BC, yeah.

@Morwenn Yeah, that's why my "like rate" for metal is probably only about 1%. Still much higher than country though.

@Morwenn Linotte reminds me of a French dialect of AppleScript.

@Undo hah, man seriously small world

@Undo - a number of things have seen interest. Personally, I would like to see blog content on good resources for reviewers ( @palacsint has a library of great books an references he uses for his answers), as well as what makes for a great review, and what makes for great questions.

6:38 PM
@BenVlodgi Yup!

@200_success I find that Linotte is more poetic. Your don't write a "program" but a "book". You don't have "functions" but "paragraphs"... That's clearly designed for education.

@rolfl Sounds viable. Interested to see how you fair with that.

There are more mundane things that would be very useful, like how and why mugrations should happen to/from Code Review.

I hit the rep cap! D: I'm gonna be losing some rep today.

Then there's also the more colourful things about the community, and touchy-feely things.

6:40 PM
@Jamal Let me give you some more upvotes today.

@Undo - like many things, it risks losing momentum, but I think we can pull it off..... right @Mat'sMug ?

@Morwenn Nah, you may save them. ;-)

@Undo - considering one for SR?

I've never rep-capped on this site.

meh, not really @rolfl.
and if we were to I wouldn't be the one heading it up :P

6:41 PM
Talking about SE blogs, I wrote a post for the Arqade.SE blog (that's actually why I brought up the blog idea here).

@Donald.McLean you should try it, it is awesome

@Morwenn Now this youtube.com/watch?v=UVTl9GnpX9g#aid=P-jHUHdMQRY reminds me of The Dropkick Murphys.

@Donald.McLean That totally sounds Irish :)

Irish are Celts too.

If you want to know more about celtic metal, the most well-known band is currently Eluveitie.

6:45 PM
@Morwenn I don't care what's popular, I only care about what I enjoy.

@Donald.McLean They are popular because they're really good :)

@200_success Interesting article you linked about OpenSSL there

@Undo - you ony have 60% answered on softrec .... you need to rally your troops ;-)

@Morwenn Yeah, he's "growling on key". This song is giving me goosebumps - the melody is just fricking outstanding.

^^

6:50 PM
@rolfl well that's kinda a byproduct of us closing everything that isn't specific.
When you make people be specific, they are specific. And often software simply doesn't exist that fulfills that specific need.

I had to share that with my metal-loving child.

Ahh, that makes sense... (not you, DM, but Undo).

yeah. Scared me at first too, until Gilles explained it :P

You should come up with a way to say .... nothing exists that will satisfy those requirements.

Like a close reason?
We have a policy that 'uhmm nothing that does that exists' is an answer, but people tend to search like crazy then give up and move on :P

6:53 PM
We have this issue where occasionally people post great code.....
what do you say..... when that's the case... we decided that an answer of "That's great, nothing to do better" is a valid answer.
So it is an answer, not a close reason.

yeah
we say people can do that, but they tend not to

I remember having seen a piece of the core of libvlc. The guys were converting pointer to unsigned long they did converted the unsigned long to a string, passed the string to a function which converted back the string to an unsigned long then to a pointer before using it.
We definitely could blog about that.

A: Tag synonyms ([error-handling], [exception-handling], [exception])

Mat's MugI find error-handling encompasses all others, in a more language-agnostic way. For example VB6/VBA doesn't have exceptions, but that doesn't stop anyone from handling errors. Therefore, I'd make error-handling the "master" and exception-handling the synonym. The tag wiki for exception sadly doe...

I've voted on too many answers, so I may never reach Electorate.

I haven't written a single line of code today and in 45 minutes the workday is over... BUT I posted 2 new CR answers, and I'm 70pts short of capping (not expecting it to happen either), so... gotta get to work (starts the copy+paste madness I'm being forced to do)

wow @Mat'sMug, not a single line? :o

7:57 PM
not a single one.

Do you feel bad?

I also haven't written a single line of code today, and I haven't written a single CR answer either.
I haven't even started Eclipse!

I wrote code in an SO answer, does that count?
And I made Netbeans auto generate some code for me and then removed it again

and I don't consider copy+pasting the same set of 2 instructions over and over again (got like 70 blocks of code to replace with these 2 instructions, with just a few parameters tweaked), as programming. But hey that's what I'm getting paid to do, and I was explicitly forbidden to refactor anything in this piece of crap, so... +...

@Mat'sMug Are you not allowed to write a program that does the job for you?

nope. and the sad part is that I already have a near-complete rewrite of that crap waiting on a shelf, with full-blown MVVM and separated concerns (and sooooooo many bugs fixed, including a massive memory leak!!), but I'm not authorized to tweak it any further until I'm told to do so. I think I hate my job.

@syb0rg i just un downvoted that answer.. it is semi useful the other answer was useful that someone said this one is similar too

I agree it is useful, but all it did was take some advice from the comments and rephrase it.
@200_success Put it best:
Arguably, @tokland should have written an answer instead of a comment. I think this is OK as an answer, but could be better with a bit more detail. — 200_success ♦ 30 secs ago
Aww, second declined flag...

@syb0rg: Do you have anything else to address in that question, or is the other answer sufficient (since it's reinventing the wheel)?
@syb0rg I was tempted to decline as well, but I wanted to see what 200 thought. When it comes to "answering" in comments, posting an answer based on that is fair game. The real advice given shouldn't stay as a comment.

On SO, posting the contents of a comment as an answer is pretty much encouraged. Is it different here on CR?

I think it's the same. It is especially important as we're trying to get more answers and voting activity. That can't happen with comments.

@Jamal A few minor things that aren't really worth putting in my own answer, such as declaring i inside the for loops, and maybe using memmove instead of memcpy.

@syb0rg Okay

Q: Is this a correct knockout ViewModel setup?

Graham TThis is my first time using knockout. I'm reading/writing a JSON file with a fair bit of nested data. I had no problem creating the ViewModel to just write to the file, but now that I'm reading the data into my model also, I've had to write a few if/else statements to handle the different cases. ...

@Jamal memmove is slower but safer, link to this if you put it in your answer: stackoverflow.com/questions/1201319/…

Is this answer of mine approaching eligibility for Populist?

A: Is this a proper doubly linked list?

JamalLinkNode Assuming this is not an internal class: A huge problem (probably the biggest) with this is that everything is public. The three data members should be private. Data members should always be private, otherwise any outside code can access them. This defeats the need of using a class a...

off-topic question here: the code is actually not working as intended.

@Jamal Accepted answer must have a minimum score of 10, are you asking all of us to upvote the accepted answer?
Hello @Gamer

@syb0rg Oh no. I was just confused by the description. I thought the score of 10 would apply to mine.
Santa, save your upvote for the reload!

@Morwenn Questions with buggy code should be closed swiftly. Once it has been answered, though, it gets awkward. Closing it brings questionable benefit, and editing the code in the question would invalidate the answer.

@200_success Feels like there is no good solution.

codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/46685/… is one vote shy of being reopened. (Takes 5 votes, right? Or is it more?)

@nhgrif Yep (already got mine by the way)
question is ready for posting; I'm finally putting up my old Windows keylogger for review.
I think I'm going to wait till reload though.

Is there a way to see how frequently I've edited a question to remove a specific tag (Xcode)?

Monking CRitters!

Hello @rolfl

Hm. I still have votes. Let's see what I could find in the One Vote Short.

A: Custom indexOf() without String methods

rolflComplexity Pedantically, the time-complexity is O( m * n ), where m is str.length and n is substr.length. This matters when abs(m - n) is large. The Space complexity is O(1). You do not allocate any size-based memory structures. Safety It all looks good. There are no threading issues, no leak...

^^^ my closest Populist candidate.

Already voted for it.

I figure most people here have ... preaching to the choir and all ;-)
I guess I should have expected the bling .... but noone expects the syb0g blinquisition...

@rolfl If you want, you could use \dot instead of \times in the Big-O notation formula. I just thought you might want \times

@Morwenn Sometimes, a good answer makes a good question. =)

A: Python and Exception Handling IOError

200_successThis is actually an interesting question. @RuslanOsipov has provided a solution, but technically it is vulnerable to a time-of-check vs. time-of-use race condition. In other words, there is a brief window between the isfile() call and the open() call where a things could go wrong. Depending on...

@200_success codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/46685/… Regarding this question... it may be okay to close one or the other versions of it as duplicate... but this raises a question... are the defined scopes of CR and SO such that an identical question could be on-topic at both sites?
If yes, then should questions posted identically to both be marked as duplicate and closed on one or the other?
If no, then how do we close the SO version of the question. I think the defined scope of CR is such that this question is clearly on-topic.

@syb0rg: I have an answer for the RingBuffer question awaiting posting after the reload.

phew I got very scared for a minute!
[...]those exceptions weren't significant at all when it came to performance That's the conclussion of the article you gave me, for what I understand, it tells me it would be good to use exceptions cause they are not that expensive. — Luis 35 mins ago
