There should be a note somewhere on the site stating that people are more likely to have their library components reviewed if they also provided some minimal example of how it is used.
Generally speaking, that means "provide a main".

even better: provide unit tests
which can then be reviewed as well

Reminds me about these two meta questions:

There is of course practical reasons to add them. but I much prefer the minimalist life, and I don't add things until I need to
@skiwi wat

@BenVlodgi I don't say that not having them is always a bad thing, I would rather abstain from saying "add them" or "remove them" in a code review since it's highly opinion based.
@BenVlodgi That's like saying "use Allman indentation" in a code review. That's highly opinion based too.

@Morwenn you are probably right, but they just hurt me so deeply

@BenVlodgi hard to tell - it does look like some "implement this with your best code" question, but the OP's code can be reviewed - when in doubt, use exploding bear traps keep it open.

A: Select evenly spaced subset from array

BenVlodgiYour math was wrong, but don't worry it was a simple fix. And I have provided an easier way to do it on top of that. The key to this review is that we're going to take advantage of the .Net libraries, which you should remember can practically do anything you want them to. That is IF you know how...

2:47 PM
@JeffGohlke: Or be faster. Or simply dare to answer, usually you will get upvotes even if you are the 5th answer as long as you make valid points.

@Nobody Yeah, I actually thought of that and edited it into my post on the "Hi!" Meta thread. That the general feeling is that if a post already has one thorough review, there's no point in adding more to it.
It would probably lead to more involvement if people still felt like they were contributing meaningfully, regardless of how many other answers there were.

we could also make a policy of "only one review bit per answer" to max out the number of answers :D
then you can always add another answer without duplicating (as long as you don't actually duplicate :)

True. It's an interesting idea, but it might lead to the opposite problem -- 10+ answers on every question, haha.
I know the very thorough answers make quite a few points.

it would have the advantage of seperating the concerns
if you make a long answer with 5 good points and one shitty, then the good ones drag up the bad one (or the other way around), separating them would allow for the best ones to rise up by voting

That's actually a really good argument.

2:53 PM
On the other hand, some answer could be broken down into 10 no really relevant points.

A: Random Generation From Sequences

MorwennOverall, your code is clean, well written and seems very consistent (and the comments also seem relevant). There is not much to say, so I will focus on some details since I don't see anything else to review: First of all, Loki is right in his comment: your header guards names (UNIFORM_SELECTION...

For example, almost none of those points is relevant enough to write an answer.

@Nobody But I bet there's some solid middle ground which would really improve the site and the experience. It's worth thinking about or mentioning on Meta.

so lets formulate an algorithm:
add parts to your answer until it is enough for an answer, then start a new one :)

"When your answer is more than 30k characters, start a new one."

2:57 PM
when your answer on CR is that long, the code in the question probably does not even work :)

@JeffGohlke There has been some questions on meta about when to split up an answer or not. I have on some occasions posted two answers to the same question. I would encourage you though to post an answer even if you feel that others have covered "everything". Elaborating on a specific thing or just describing something with different words often give you up-votes.

@Nobody I don't know about that. I've seen some pretty ugly code. I remember working on this one project where there was a procedure that was 2000 lines long.

@Donald.McLean: That in itself would be reason for me to believe that the code is probably incorrect

@Malachi - You're an odd-ball sometimes ;-)
Why are you looking at a post that has not been touched in ... 6 months?

@rolfl lol. yep
@rolfl because @JeffGohlke answered it and I was checking his answers to see if I knew enough to vote them up

4:10 PM
@Malachi Aww. I appreciate it, but I don't need rep I don't deserve, haha.

OK, the answer is 6 months old too ;-)
Right, the post was closed as not working, then edited, and then re-opened by the community at the time (including 2 who are now moderators.... ;-)
You've edited in some white-space now, and removed a brace '}' (not sure why...), but I don't see anything that's change in the last 6 months that changes the community decision from back then.

@skiwi What CCG idea do you have?

The brace-change has altered the program logic.

@rolfl Do you have some experience with XOM? I'm revisiting the XML-reading part of an old project soon, and I might want to switch it out for some better library.
@SimonAndréForsberg I was thinking about giving the players a fixed amount of hp. All cards have a certain damage stat, and a certain amount of HP. They can attack eachother and if the player's hp is on zero, then they lose. Was thinking about adding a bunch of cards with like 1 damage, then fewer with 2, fewer with 3, etc.

I'm thankful that Scala has it's own built-in XML support.

4:16 PM
Need to keep it simple for my AI

XOM changes the way you think about XML, and it does not use any of the standard JAVA API/Collections for XML navigation....
So it has custom iterators/collections/etc.
This is a specific design decision of theirs.

That would my Java 8 I guess..

Hah, scared my self, WTH?? I lost 50 points?? Then realized I had set a bounty
2

@rolfl I'll consider using JDOM ;-)

4:18 PM
The author of XOM (Elliotte Harold) was a big contributor to JDOM in the beginning.
He started XOM as a result of his disagreement with some of the design decisions in JDOM.
In principle I agree with many of his 'issues', but the pragmatist in me says people need things to be consistent with expectations.

Ah okay
What's the deal with too many checked exceptions?

You will find that JDOM has better maintenance, etc. ... ;-)
(I am releasing a new version tomorrow.
@skiwi context?

@rolfl It was said somewhere in the slides that he thought JDOM had too many checked exceptions, in one of the older versions
Probably I'll visit the XML section of my project within a few weeks, it's the next step that I'm redoing
(Dinner now)

Ahh, JDOM throws JDOMException for a number of things. Since then the JDOMException usage has been reduced a lot.
Remember that this was all happening early in both libraries life cycles.
(12 years ago .... crap).

@skiwi Keeping it simple is a good idea. It becomes so much... simpler that way.

4:23 PM
JDOM throws regular exceptions for regular issues now ....
There are a couple of places where JDOM specific exceptions can happen....
They make sense to me, and have complicated, but real reasons.

@skiwi Overall, I like your idea. And it also sounds like a great starting point for a CCG, which perhaps can be extended on later.
@rolfl Now that you're a mod, you know if anything have happened with this? Can it be marked soon?

Q: Can/Should our short site description be changed to better reflect what we are about?

Simon André ForsbergI shared a link to Code Review on Facebook and noticed what the description said about our beloved site: Q&A for peer programmer code reviews I got the feeling that this includes questions about Code Reviews, which is not on-topic here but on Programmers. So I was thinking: How can this be ...

For example, when you can use SAX, StAX, and DOM parsing for things (and each of them has different checked exceptions like SAXParseException, ConfigurationException, etc....), and you want a simpler library, then you declare only one checked exception JDOMException, so that users of the library do not need to know that they have to catch these complicated things....
@skiwi .. this is the example code for parsing with SAX:
String xmlFile = "file:///xerces-2_11_0/data/personal.xml";
try {
    SAXParserFactory factory = SAXParserFactory.newInstance();
    factory.setNamespaceAware(true);
    SAXParser parser = factory.newSAXParser();
    DefaultHandler handler = /* custom handler class */;
    parser.parse(xmlFile, handler);
}
catch (FactoryConfigurationError e) {
    // unable to get a document builder factory
}
catch (ParserConfigurationException e) {
    // parser was unable to be configured
catch (SAXException e) {
That is 3 checked exceptions......
And DOM has different exceptions...
JDOM exposes just IOException and JDOMException.... regardless of the implementation underneath.
Anyway, back to Mod duty.... @SimonAndréForsberg - looking.

@Malachi yah, I've been here since like 8:30 and it is 12:30, that does not mean i am awake :D

This is why I prefer XStream for XML parsing.
Pretty simple. Just annotate your classes, and you're done.

@JeffGohlke - the same stuff above, in JDOM, with exception handling, is:
try {
    Document doc = new SAXBuilder().build(xmlFile);
} catch (JDOMException badparseisrare) {
    .....
} catch (IOException morecommon) {
    ....
}

So, what is the difference between memset(hash, 0, sizeof(hash)); and hash = 0; My C knowledge is spotty, I would think it is the same
uint8_t hash[20]; ( never mind )

cool @rolfl, does JDOM have Path support btw?
@BenVlodgi That thing is awesome
@SimonAndréForsberg Glad you like the idea

5:08 PM
@skiwi Nope, it runs on Java 1.5

Hey, @Undo!

@rolfl So basically we need more answers to the question, and something we can all agree on is best?

@skiwi I kinda want to cook on it

Yeah, and someone to drive it....
I have an idea, but I am in the middle of a presentation

@rolfl Are there any future plans for making it Java 8 ready? I'm suspecting Java 8 to become a major building block in the future, I do also understand that it would mean to maintain two codebases. But the Java 8 part could be just an interface bolted on top of the real core.

I'll consider it... ;-)

Though I'm really wondering what they'll do with Java 9, I still have to figure out how they are intending to implement actual typed generics (no runtime erasure) and value-based classes without breaking older code

But, in reality we hit java-5 support 2 years ago.

I bet they are going to break backwards compatibility one day.
I see that it can take time
Yet at the same time I cannot really see Oracle breaking backwards compatibility

on SO, my rep history for my answers is
0 0 3 0 1 0 1 0 0 1 1 3 1 0 0 0 1 2 -1 0 0 2 0 0 0 -1 2 0 2 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 2 6 0 1 0
some of the 0s were even answers

You can't expect anything high
Though something strictly positive would've been nice, yes

just atleast a 1 on my answers would be almost worth

@200_success You should never run a query in a loop, especially a loop where the number of queries issued scales with the size of the data. -- please, tell that to my colleagues! (nice answer BTW)

that sounds horrific

@BenVlodgi And you're already in the 93rd percentile for SO reputation this year. Think of the lower 93%!

5:20 PM
wow

@200_success that is just sad =\
I don't know why I continue to answer questions ther... I just keep getting pulled back in
</rant>
tnx for upvote @santa

I'm in the top 0.44% this year on SO :o

@skiwi there is this place called the Air zoo near where I live and they have....
3d enclosed airplane simulations
but even better... they have full motion pods, where you play a flight simulator

Damn, that post was actually from a Warthunder subreddit (3D flight arcade/sim)
wow, this logic deserves a printscreen

Q: Application of Composition Inheritance and Interfaces Model

ruediFor learing oop I opend a little project by myself. I like rollplaying so I choose to build a character generator. I guess it is quite similar to a online game character generator. II cannot explain every property but the idea should be easy to grasp. I build a Character. Since a Character 'has ...

How can they count users if they are not counted?!
and those sims look pretty ;)

@skiwi they are fun... and the image you posted, imagin using those with an occulous rift

I want the Oculus Rift, if FB doesn't mess up badly..

5:32 PM
wow, I forgot about that... hopefully its just going to be them pouring money into it, and not making it crap

@SimonAndréForsberg beat me by a few seconds..

I'm first to 10K and first to comment, are you getting slow, Mug?

@SimonAndréForsberg tss.. my comment is more warmly welcoming :p

@skiwi

The Crystal Cove version's 1080p OLED display is amazingly sharp and bright. However, what really sets it apart is its positional-tracking capabilities, accomplished thanks to an array of sensors mounted around the edges of the unit, which are monitored by an external camera. It's no longer just your head that controls movement; lean forward or back, and the virtual environment moves in sync, providing an unparalleled, fully immersive experience.

Q: How's this approach for game rendering

2013AskerI'm writing simple 2D games in order to learn more about how they work. For tetris, rendering was pretty simple. But now I'm making a platformer and I feel like I need more abstraction. My idea is to have a render queue and use the following structures to allow every object to draw itself. Are t...

github.com/openssl/openssl/commit/… I'm sure these people all do very valuable work, but the C (or C++?) code just hurts my eyes and soul.

> Something that does bother me though: can't the [on hold] questions be removed from the overview? It irritates me a lot that basically half of my result page has been put on hold which makes it harder to see what questions still need attention.
Do we have that many off-topic questions?

A: Hi! What brings you here today?

Jeroen VannevelI feel like most things have already been said here so I'll just add a few small things. What brings you to Code Review today, and why do you keep coming back? I like the teaching-nature of reviewing code. In certain tags on SO like unit-testing it takes a few minutes before the first answ...

@Mat'sMug As of now, it doesn't seem to be too bad.

Q: User Input and Reading Contents of File

jal3524For full disclosure this is an assignment for my programming class and I just want tips or advice on some of the code. Assignment details just for background information purposes. Write a program that will read a number 1-100 from the user, and the name of a data file, and will tell the user wh...

I think @rolfl needs to get a life.

I think @rolfl needs to get a banana.

@skiwi that is unforgivable
if that was some C# I would press + + (fixes poopy formatting)

command-option-l

@BenVlodgi What's unforgivable?
Quick question, is it A piece of advice or An piece of advice? (I know it's An advice)

A: Hi! What brings you here today?

skiwiI'll also contribute my bit here. I started on CR not too long ago by sometimes putting up interesting pieces of my code on this site in order to get more interesting views (answers) upon them, such that I could improve my own mindset. Then I got a very kind invite to the chatroom, and I decided...
