@fredley @Ebongo was wondering why this was closed

Q: Assassin's Creed 3 runs slow continuously and voice is out of sync

yogeshWhen playing Assassin's Creed 3 the game is sluggish and audio often gets out of sync. This is a continuous problem that I experience during cutscenes and during regular gameplay. Sometimes it gets better temporarily, but only for a short time. I have run Far Cry 3 and Mass Effect 3 on my rig,...

1:20 PM
@badp Too localized?

@fredley ...could you elaborate?

@badp It seems to be specific to him and his rig, and an answer is unlikely to help others. There's also minimal evidence that he's actually researched or tried anything himself to begin with. This kind of thing can be duked out in chat.

@fredley okay, thank you.
I don't feel strongly either way

@badp The length of the comments thread on that question already suggests that it needs chat not a question. If a user posts a question about a very specific technical problem that they've researched, fine, but a general 'Why doesn't my system work' question is hard to answer without a load more information.

Is there a "read this to see why we can't help" link.
for the "why doesn't this game work correctly" question?

1:26 PM
@EBongo ^^

which will basically list what we need to help diagnose the issue.

Q: Extremely low FPS in Dwarf Fortress

dmay5 FPS. 5 (FIVE)!!! After two weeks of playing with 40-60 at least. Kind of slow motion movie. What can cause such effect? 160-height tunnel to magma sea? 40x40x6 designated dig area? Pets(but most of them already caged)?

@djsmiley2k I don't know if we have one of those, but we should - and the active users should regularly reference it.

This for example, the guy gives his hardware spec and misses out what OS he's running. As I point out in teh comments, if hes running x86 XP then he can't even use his 12Gb of ram
@EBongo It'd help this "your question is unhelpful but instead of helping we've just closed it for you, feel free to try again" problem that seems to be recurring in the small tiem I've been here.

I think it's normally considered a best practice for technical questions, to have such a list of required information.
@djsmiley2k Exactly....

@djsmiley2k Closing the question is right, but how we deal with that and communicate with the user is vital. We should be either telling people how to proceed and ask useful questions in future and/or invite them to chat with us here.

@fredley Indeed, I think this is a large part of the reason we've seen issues in here.

Guess that's it for blocking used games this generation. If Microsoft were the only one doing it, they'd be slaughtered

@fredley I think there is a little bit of Stack intertia here, in that the user may not be able to participate in Chat, Meta, or comments at this rep level.

Everyone isn't disagreeing about closing questions, they are disgreeing in the fashion in which it's done.

@EBongo This, plus some requirement that they've done some actual research, not just GAME IS SLOW HALP PLOX
@EBongo Can't remember what the rep barrier for chat is, but it's low. Low enough that one decent question or answer will get you here.

1:30 PM
@fredley I think it's 20.

10.

@StrixVaria Well quite. Find me a good question/answer that's earned less than 10 rep.

But, if you've just got one question, and it doesn't get answered, your not going to stick around to get into chat.

Especially if it rapidly gets downvotes and closed...

@djsmiley2k You might if we let them know in the comments of their bad question.

1:31 PM
While some might not stick around even if they DO get the answer (or at least some help), no one sticks around when there is no help at all.

This is why we should be nice.

@fredley exactly :D

Is it technically possible to have a chat room besides the bridge, which requires less rep?

There is plenty more forums/places they could spam their unhelpful question.

@djsmiley2k As in the comments on that AC3 question, there is help.

1:32 PM
A "guest" chat if you will?

@EBongo No. And honestly, less than 10 == 1, so it'd be an open chat room to the whole internet. Bad idea.

No wonder they haven't spent any time actually improving the game. They've been wasting their time on bullshit.

@fredley It's 20, actually.

@StrixVaria bullshit == $$$$$$

Are we arguing about closing questions again? Mods are nazis, new users are idiots and old users are stuck up mic drop

1:33 PM
@GraceNote Oh ok.
Still.

That said, no, rep privilege levels are static.

@BenBrocka .... no

@BenBrocka Welcome to the conversation :)

@BenBrocka we are agreeing about fixes.

@djsmiley2k $$$$$$ from a new market at the expense of the trust of their loyal fans.

@StrixVaria Loyal fans are dumb, Why be loyal to a company who's only ever shown you contempt?

@djsmiley2k They were fine before they merged with Activision.

@djsmiley2k Dunno, ask Apple fans.

Time to head for work.

@fredley hahaha

1:35 PM
@djsmiley2k Well that's much less fun to mock

@BenBrocka Sorry :/

@fredley I'm interested in brainstorming a technical way to engage better. I agree comments are not great, the site even tells you so after a few in a row. Chat would be better, but have to upvote their question to get them here seems pretty undesirable too. Having them locked in a place we can't actively talk to them does somewhat compound the problem..

I figured I'll try and be the saviour of the bridge

@EBongo Closed questions can still be commented on.

@EBongo Too localized might not be correct, but it should definitely be closed. As NARQ, preferably.

1:36 PM
NARQ?

@fredley I thought we were discussing why comments were not the place to teach a new user about our rules (at length).

@djsmiley2k Not a real q

Otherwise, it will garner guesses as answers, which helps no one at all.

@EBongo Oh. I thought a helpful comment on a closed question was encouraged?

There's not enough information to properly answer it.

1:37 PM
Need a "Please read this" page

@fredley Absolutely. The issue is if one (or a few) comments are not enough, and it needs to be more of a discussion.

@EBongo FWIW SE is going some rehauling of the closure system, so new users should get much better feedback from the system
But that's not finalized or elaborated on much yet

@EBongo We can't dicuss things on SE, it's not allowed!

@djsmiley2k It might be a good addition to the FAQ. That's probably the best place for it.
@YiJiang'sEvilClone Come on... He said "god bless you" at the end. That makes any edit allowable, doesn't it?

1:40 PM
@EBongo Achoo

@YiJiang'sEvilClone I'll be the first to admit that my DragonVale brethren can be a bit of a mess at times. I wouldn't oppose a blanket 10 rep rule on all DragonVale questions- but the questions (and good answers) are very helpful if you play the game.

You know, I've never asked a question
I'm sure there's hundreds I could come up with if I wanted to, but most of the time I find answers faster than anyone else :S

Time for work - later all.

A: Is it possible to install Steam games to two different locations?

badpYes, this is now possible in the current Steam beta. You'll see the option at install time.

@badp your answer is outdated and overlaps with other answers now. The question already has too many answers IMO

1:54 PM
@YiJiang'sEvilClone sure, but my answer's from September and kotekzot's from three months later :P

You should accept defeat honorably *sagenod*

On behalf of the community I accept the defeat in clearly giving my answer the votes it deserves

I gave it a vote :/

Accursed thing!

1:56 PM
/me falls down

I clearly need to find an animated facehoof, because this still image cannot clearly express how hard I'm slamming my face against the table right now

@StrixVaria Cards away!

If you scroll up a little, you'd find this answer

A: Is it possible to install Steam games to two different locations?

kotekzotAs of the latest Steam version for Windows, it is possible to install games to arbitrary locations. To do so, click "Install" in your library or the store and choose "Create new Steam library" in the "Choose drive to install to" dropdown menu. This option will only be available for games using th...

@YiJiang'sEvilClone sure, but my answer's from September and kotekzot's from three months later :P
If you read a little you'd find my comment

@badp Which makes no difference to someone visiting the question now

Q: Does the Wii U use HDCP copy protection on its HDMI output?

Ben BrockaI'd like to record gaming videos via HDMI on the Wii U, so I wonder if its HDMI output is protected by HDCP, which would mean I'd need to use another output method to record. I've googled a bit and found extremely conflicting reports of whether the Wii U has HDCP or not, and none of the people st...

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Flag it for removal then, I for one am not going to remove an answer because somebody else repeated it three months later :/
