@badp I've gone to a different carrier, and kept my number. That's law in Canada, that once you have a cell number, you basically get to keep it until you move to a different region.
I'll be doing that again near the end of October as well.

Here I'll probably keep my number unless I move to Canada or something

FAE
When I went to Toronto for the first time, I had no idea that you had to dial the area code when you were within the city to make phone calls.

settles into rocking chair When I was young, we only had to dial 5 numbers.

I suppose you want us to get off your lawn?

FAE
Also all mobile numbers in the Netherlands start with 06.

7:04 PM
@badp what's a home number
(they're increasingly rare in the US)

FAE
@badp in the US, there's no way to tell just by number

Afternoon Bridge

FAE
they're all formatted the same

Also that.

@BenBrocka It is? What platform is it on?

7:05 PM
We literally have a home phone for the sole purpose of having something that our alarm system can use to call the police.

(sorry was in meeting)

And locating misplaced cell phones

@Powerlord oh, I think I'm thinking of a different Zombie game with a different "dead" pun. I remember playing something vaguely like that on Vita
hard to tell them all apart these days
@Unionhawk I just IM someone to call it. I can text my parents via google voice, usually works

This one is the Pikmin-style game.

7:08 PM
surprised alarm systems can't use the internet for that somehow
oh, this was an RTS...that I can't remember the name of

They can, but ours is as old as the house, (nearly 15 years, I think)

FAE
Our phone line isn't actually even a phone line.
It's basically glorified VOIP.

@BenBrocka I actually have a home number (runs and hides)

Incidentally, the TV phone Internet bundle is cheaper than TV Internet from twc here, which is slightly pants on head

I get enoguh spam calls on my cell phone, I can't imagine a home phone

7:14 PM
Yay. One of our websites failed to complete an order due to an apostrophe.
Shoot me now.

@Frank Oh god. You are so doomed.

@frank any preferences on weapon used?

@Unionhawk Nuclear?

we have 3rd financial software that won't accept them in certain fields

@Frank You sure that you don't want deathstar level stuff pointed at yyou?

7:16 PM
Fortunately I think it chokes on itself and dies rather than allowing SQL injection. I can't actually do anything about it though, we just told people not to use them

@Arperum I had to burn through two levels of IIS error handling for it to even spit out a proper error message.

Excellent, my order of a bad game and a bad game console has been delivered
I am good with money

@Frank fun times. I've been digging through database connector errors myself. Got it fixed today. Apparently "server rejected connection" means "we deleted some columns in our tables, didn't inform you that your stuff would break on update, and now your select query is wrong.
Also: the database browser program you've been using for trying to figure out what's wrong is going to try to access random memory where it shouldn't and that'll result in errors too.

@Arperum Ew.

@Frank Yea, fun times were had. Did I mention that I am actually working on some other thing that has a pretty unmovable deadline?

7:41 PM
@Arperum Welcome to IT. Where miracles are expected.

@Frank I'm fully aware.

SERIOUSLY, WHY IS SOMEONE FROM JAMAICA CALLING ME?
IS IT ONE OF YOU?
IS SOMEONE IN HERE FROM JAMAICA?

I can assure you, the caller does not need to be from Jamaica for the call to originate in Jamaica.
(No, that was not a confession.)

SOMEONE HAS A GUILTY CONSCIENCE

@Arperum And the reward for managing the miracle is another one.

7:44 PM
IF I SAW SOMEONE PERFORM A MIRACLE, I'D LIKELY ASK THEM TO DO IT AGAIN

@OrigamiRobot And then another, and another, and another, until miracles become commonplace.

WHAT KIND OF SELFISH PERSON HAS THE ABILITY TO PERFORM MIRACLES AND DOESN'T?

@OrigamiRobot Welcome to IT, where everything we do is a miracle, because nobody understands computers.

Q: Why do some people think online features are necessary for all games?

PhoxxentI've been around the internet lately and have seen people dissing games from companies like nintendo (well, that's the only one I have actually seen often enough to warrant memory) for not including very many online capabilities, arguing that all games must have some sort of online because it is ...

p good question

It's Clash of Clans:Star Wars edition

@Frank not surprised

user3411946Hye there! I am new to this type of question actually I'm so much worried about my town hall because i have recently upgraded to town hall 8 since then whenever i want to attack i get a low level opponent and so much low on loot. 8:02 PM
@badp I swear I read somewhere the other day how to reduce the OS Verification nag screen time but I can't find it any more
@badp Do you know of such a thing?

Working late (by choice) kinda sucks.

@fredley Windows?

@badp Chromebook
The 30 seconds of 'press space to nuke your device' that means I can never lend my machine to anyone

@fredley Unsurprisingly, I didn't unlock my work chromebook, so I'm not sure I can help you.

@badp Bah
bahp

8:06 PM
:(

@badp It's the only flaw in an otherwise great machine

@fredley you can't remove that?

Want root access? Hope you're happy living perched on a knife edge of loss!
@BenBrocka Not as far as I can tell

@fredley Yeah everything about unlocking Chrome OS seems super scary and annoying.

It's a screen that's up for 30 seconds the says OS VERIFICATION IS TURNED OFF, PRESS SPACE TO RE-ENABLE
pressing space wipes your drive

8:07 PM
Does it redownload everything you need once yousign in? Chrome as a browser downloads almost everything it needs

I hate Access.

pressing ctrl-D boots up the machine

It has ghost breakpoints, of all things.

@BenBrocka If you root it, it's probably because you want more than just Chrome.

@Frank Preaching to the choir!

8:08 PM
@BenBrocka Most things. Non-chrome extensions, extension settings, and local files are not restored

Hello, e'erbody.

@badp I just want a flipping shell

@Powerlord You don't have half your applications written in it.

@fredley do you need to root it to use crosh?

And the other half migrated from Access straight into VB.NET

8:09 PM
@Frank well that does sound like progress
somewhat

@badp you can use crosh, which has a just-about functional ssh client

@badp It was a migration. Not a rewrite.

@fredley I thought crosh also did mosh?

@badp eh?

mosh the protocol.

8:10 PM
It was literally, "Grab from Access. Import into .NET project. Migration complete."

@badp I know it not

we still have one COBOL program in use, only by one person though

So I think I just started on the most pointless of stupid projects.

@badp neat
@badp I don't know if crosh can mosh

8:11 PM
Basically while SSH sends over the wire everything the system sends to the terminal, mosh only syncs the actual terminal state

I'm gonna try coding a blog from scratch.

This means that if you accidentally cat a 1 MB file, SSH will "download" that file whereas mosh will only show the final screenful and the next prompt

We did the mosh - We did the manster mosh
@badp I see

On a side note, I got Rune Factory 4.
It's been super-fun.
The crafting system is greatly improved from RF: Oceans and the crop system is surprisingly good and in-depth for a Rune Factory game.

@Frank No, but I was pulled into a project for another division that was writing Access forms and VBScript. Note that the last time I touched Access was in 2004-2005ish and this project was earlier this year.

8:14 PM
@Powerlord Yep, sounds like what I do.
"Hey, it's a programming language! Frank can do it!"

Luckily, I managed to get out of said project (part of it wasn't even my choice but because I had a major illness and this project had a short deadline)

Also, I haven't cleared the plot in a single season, so that's another good thing.
looking at you, RF: Oceans...

Q: how do i conect my controllors to my xbox360

lolsennaOK so my xbox360 remotes wont be to the xbox360 i tried every thing can someone tell me how to fix it i tried unplug it and turning my stuff off it again it was working fine we were on fine

@MBraedley Preach it, Brother!
Jul 16 at 16:25, by Sterno
Attention developers: Putting the first { on the same line as the function definition, instead of a new line by itself, is an awful practice and you should be ashamed of yourselves for doing it. I'm especially looking at you, all javascript ever.

I think VS automatically moves the open brace to its own line.
Maybe?

@Sterno I disagree

@Yuuki In C#/C++ it does, yes. You can disable that, though.

@Sterno I also disagree.

8:33 PM
Eclipse is just the opposite... it does funky indenting if you put the { on its own line.

I can see arguments both for and against.

You guys are allowed to have your own, incorrect opinions. You usually do!

Like most arguments over coding conventions, it's really up to the dev and his/her team.

Sure, your team can choose to be wrong if it wants.

@Sterno The code that was in front of me when I read this:

8:35 PM
Whatever makes it more readable/maintainable for you.

When I see a }, I should be able to follow it up and the first thing I come to be the line with the function.

THIS IS AMERICA. WE ALL HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE AS STUPID AS WE WISH

Having to go up an extra line is just wasting time

Also, a waste of lines.

8:36 PM
THE WORLD IS NOT RUNNING OUT OF LINES

But not necessarily a waste of timelines

I think braces (not just open braces) should be on their own line. It makes reading if blocks much easier.

@JasonBerkan dat censorship

Also, to make your code more confusing but get rid of curly braces, you should just do model.WhateverProperty = model.WhateverProperty ?? new List<whatever>()
Because clearly more confusing is better

PYTHON BRACELESS MASTER RACE
3

8:37 PM
@fredley Can't give away any business secrets, like newing up lists of stuff for the model.

@Yuuki I don't see how.

@Sterno We get it, you're entitled to your own opinion. But your condescending, strawmanning arguments are getting annoying

@JasonBerkan Yeh, I remember when kalina revealed her employer by posting code

Pretty sure any time @Sterno is being condescending, it's to highlight the ridiculousness of being condescending.

8:38 PM
@OrigamiRobot Almost every time I see an else clause in example code, it's sharing a line with a close brace, so finding that else clause is a mite more time-consuming than it is the other way.
Something like:
> if (something) {
> do something
> } else {
> something else
> }

@Yuuki It would help if you indented properly

@Yuuki Were that properly indented, I'd see no problem with it.

@murgatroid99 Dammit, I don't know to code in Markdown!

The tabs are probably stripped by chat.

@Yuuki Try the "fixed font" button
@OrigamiRobot Everyone knows you should only indent with spaces

8:40 PM
I think that's one of twenty buttons I don't have.

@murgatroid99 Now we're in disagreement.

@murgatroid99 I did do that on the assumption that Markdown strips leading tabs. It seems Markdown strips leading spaces too.

Jul 30 at 14:47, by Jason Berkan
@fredley So that all the four space people can configure their IDE to display tabs with four spaces, while all the two space people can configure their IDE to display tabs with two spaces AND EVERYONE GETS ALONG.

if(something){
  do something
} else {
  something else
}
Really?

@murgatroid99 Chat has a fixed font button? Screenshot plz?

8:42 PM
@Powerlord You need to have multiple lines in the chat box

@murgatroid99 This is fine

Since the font is different, I'm assuming you used a different notation than me.

USE INDENTATION, LOVE INDENTATION

@Powerlord Shift-enter

It's indented by four spaces, just like code in markdown always is

8:42 PM
@murgatroid99 Huh, when did that get added?

I don't see the difficulty

Anyways, the identation on the else clause is annoying.

@Powerlord I think it's been there forever

@Powerlord It's been there for a very long time

@murgatroid99 That used to not work in chat.

8:43 PM
@Powerlord It only works if you have no non-code text

Chat multiline markdown is wonky, but the rules are pretty simple: Only code and quote work. And only if they're applied to the whole message.

...including empty lines

I can sorta understand if you do something like...

@Yuuki I don't see the problem

The only thing that irks me about @murgatroid99's example is the lack of spaces in the if line

8:44 PM
if condition:
  doSomething()
else:
  doSomethingElse()

Python lets you be super hipster.

@fredley I prefer something like that, where else has the same identation as if.

@badp You mean like if(something) {?

@badp Python is decades old

@Yuuki My else line had the same indentation as the if

8:45 PM
hipster = {True: doSomething, False: doSomethingElse}
hipster[condition]()

:17276771 SYNTAX ERROR: UNEXPECTED TOKEN '\n'

@murgatroid99 The problem is that it shares a line with the close braces of the if clause before it.

@badp *shudders*

@murgatroid99 more like if (something) {

def eww_snakes()
    if python:
        die

8:46 PM
@badp Eww.

@badp That is a preference I don't share

So else is offset from the beginning margin.

@Yuuki Why is that a problem?

Are we getting into personal coding styles now?

@murgatroid99 Me too. But I get why people add the space.

8:46 PM
@FEichinger This is the Pythonic way to switch! Except of course you wouldn't switch on a boolean.

@Yuuki But the alignment of the braces still lets you find corresponding control flow lines

@badp Yes, but it's still icky. :P

@badp That has to be the weirdest syntax for a ternary I've seen yet.

@Frank I'm just stating why I don't like it. I seriously hope no one's taking this as preaching.
Because if so, I'm just going to drop this here.

fun do True = Something
  | do False = SomethingElse;

8:47 PM
@badp FWIW, I've used it in PHP a few times to avoid some nasty nesting.

@fredley I think want something more like this:

@FEichinger PHP lets you bind functions to variables?
That's good.

@badp $$

That is less good.

@badp Is that actually pythonic?

8:48 PM
@fredley Dictionaries of functions? AFAIK yes.

@FEichinger $$SWAG
@badp ew

fun do something somethingElse =
   fn True => something
      | False => somethingElse
For generality

Q: Replacements for switch statement in Python?

Michael SchneiderI want to write a function in Python that returns different fixed values based on the value of an input index. In other languages I would use a switch or case statement, but Python does not appear to have a switch statement. What are the recommended Python solutions in this scenario?

@badp I also wasn't actually referring to functions there. I had a larger hash that I was processing.

@murgatroid99 My ML is rusty

8:49 PM
So I assigned [0] and [1] and used that in a loop further down the road.

All I remember is the currying

Because that was the easiest way to integrate it with the existing system.
It's awful and I hate it, but it works with what I had.

@fredley I could have done that curried, with a case statement, too

@murgatroid99 Isn't it curryable by default?

@fredley I mean all in one function definition, instead of explicitly returning a function

8:50 PM
fun mandatory = True

on:

ldi temp,0b00100011
out TCCR0A,temp
in	temp,ACSR
sbrc temp,5
rjmp off

rjmp on

@badp plz to ;

@fredley Actually, it would probably make more sense to make the two inputs a tuple

@OrigamiRobot Assembly!

This is the proper way!

8:51 PM
@murgatroid99 That's the usual way to do it

@OrigamiRobot What kind of assembly is this?

Don't ask me what this was supposed to do.

@fredley Now I'm just picturing @fredley hunched in front of a computer with piles of curry dishes.

@murgatroid99 AVR

@Yuuki Pretty much

8:51 PM
And considering my mental image of @fredley is a pork chop, it makes for an interesting picture.

@Yuuki For the curious currying is a thing such that every function f(x,y) is actually a function f(x)(y)

I also have no idea why the in line is spaced like that.

Namely how a pork chop (one made of diamond at that) eats curry.
@badp Is there a reason why it's called "currying"?

FAE
@Yuuki I finally saw Frozen

> The name "currying", coined by Christopher Strachey in 1967, is a reference to logician Haskell Curry

8:53 PM
Haskell Brooks Curry (/ˈhæskəl ˈkɜri/; September 12, 1900 – September 1, 1982) was an American mathematician and logician. Curry is best known for his work in combinatory logic; while the initial concept of combinatory logic was based on a single paper by Moses Schönfinkel, much of the development was done by Curry. Curry is also known for Curry's paradox and the Curry–Howard correspondence. There are three programming languages named after him, Haskell, Brooks and Curry, as well as the concept of currying, a technique used for transforming functions in mathematics and computer science. == Life... ==

@FAE I'm gonna guess you found it mediocre?
Possibly even worse due to ridiculous amount of hype?

FAE
@Yuuki It was better than I expected! I quite liked it, despite being ridiculously bombarded with it for almost a year.

Tangent: I'm looking for songs to go on my "Everything Is Awesome" playlist. I currently have only the main theme for Pacific Rim.
(No, I have vetoed "Everything Is Awesome" from the Lego movie)

Crap. I was just going to post that.

Mostly because playing that song does not make everything I do feel awesome.

8:55 PM
In fact, I still will. youtube.com/watch?v=StTqXEQ2l-Y

FAE
@Yuuki The duet parts were really good.

Basically, if the song makes grabbing some tomatoes to put in your shopping cart feel like you're shutting up and getting in the giant robot, it's a contender.

@badp Mandatory Fun is great.

@Yuuki Check out Two Steps From Hell. I specifically have the songs Heart of Courage and Protectors of Earth

I must have saved the world five times over while washing the dishes to the Pacific Rim main theme yesterday night.

8:57 PM
I know the whole purpose of the code was to turn on a clock on until ADC read a certain voltage, but I don't remember how it works or why I decided to even use Assembly at all.

@FAE Now you need to let it go, let it go, can't hold it back any more.

@Yuuki I would also suggest a bunch of the music from the halo series, up to Halo 3

@murgatroid99 Oh yeah, I think I'm going to grab Finish the Fight from that soundtrack.
I remember that one being pretty awesome.

FAE
@badp I clicked on the Community Hub for that Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae game you're playing and the first thing I saw was a guide on "HOW TO MAKE "PANTSU SHOTS"" >_>

@FAE Oh lol.

9:00 PM
@FAE Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae is... not a good game, even without pantsu shottu.

@Yuuki I'd also suggest (from my own playlist) One Final Effort, Enough Dead Heroes, This is the Hour, Halo Theme Mjolnir Mix, and Behold a Pale Horse

Gotta love the extra quotes around "pantsu shots".

@Yuuki Also, Enterprising Young Men from the 2009 Star Trek movie

So anyone thinking about getting Rune Factory 4 should go do that thing.

Crouton is sick
Like, crazy sick
I'm in love

9:01 PM
@Yuuki And just about anything from Gurren Lagann, if you can find it

FAE
@badp I was like "Oh, what kinda game is this? click Oh.... oh."

@Powerlord This is not true. I was using eclipse when I wrote that, and it handles things just fine.
</late messages because I was driving home>

My highscore for Swing Copter so far: 0

FAE
@badp it looks sorta like a poor man's schoolgirl-themed Dynasty Warriors?

9:11 PM
not sure what Dynasty Warriors is.

@badp Wait, spending levels to save?

New Best: 1!

@badp It's basically a beat-'em-up.

@Yuuki You can also talk to NPCs to save, but I haven't seen any in a while.

@MBraedley Apparently it only does it in the JSP editor (or whatever Eclipse opens .js files in by default).
Which does this:
if (null)
	{

	}

9:13 PM
It's a historical(ish) beat-'em-up where you play characters from China's Three Kingdoms period.

@Powerlord Oh, that's awful

Oh, apparently it's just called "JavaScript Editor" although I think doing inline JavaScript (either standalone or in a <script> block) in the JSP editor does the same thing.
Son of a... weather, why are you nice and sunny when I go into work but dark, gloomy, and rainy when I go to leave?

Quick question, how long ago was inFamous: Second Son?

...my umbrella is sitting in my car.
Which is a 10 minute walk from my office.

@Powerlord An umbrella is one of the things that if you ever remember to bring into the car with you, you need to take with you wherever you go from there.

9:18 PM
@Powerlord I suggest running

@badp I told you it was bad.

FAE
@Yuuki released in March

Literally the only good thing about it is you can see panties some times.

Also the graphics are okay I guess
Every enemy is exactly the same

9:21 PM
@GnomeSlice I know you and TB did, but the cards are selling nicely, so I endured through the first two stages and idled the rest.

@FAE Of this year? And they already have trailers for another one?
Jeez.

Yeah cards are always good money for anime games.

FAE
@Yuuki Yes and if you're seeing trailers for Last Light, it's DLC

I think I made it to the first boss and then stopped playing.

@FAE Ah.

9:22 PM
One Way Heroics is quite fun, however.

@FAE So, did you hear about the rich-man's Zelda-themed Dynasty Warriors?

FAE
@Powerlord It's kinda been all over gaming news, so yes. :P

Good... too bad that genre has never really been my kind of thing.
In fact, I'm not sure what Nintendo has been doing, but it seems like most of their franchises are having stuff done to make me lose interest in them.

FAE
I plan on getting it whenever I get a WiiU.

I might buy Super Smash Bros, but I'm not bothering to get a WiiU as I've seen 0 other games that interest me on it.

9:26 PM
I've never been a big fan of Smash Bros. It makes for a fun party game, but I probably wouldn't touch it in any other situation.

(or is the next title just Smash Bros.... not clear on that)
@Yuuki Well, perhaps I should wait to see if they made Internet play work better than Brawl's.

inb4 Smash Siblings because you need to include women

@GnomeSlice Women can be brothers too.
That's sexist, that is.

My friends really only play games online any more, so party games are no longer "must buys" for me.
Mario Kart lost me around MK Wii because of the idiocy with bikes.
(I was terrible at using them, they're mandatory to actually win in online games)

@Powerlord So bikes > everything else?
That's terrible.

9:30 PM
@Yuuki Yup, because doing a wheelie on the bikes are faster than karts ever are.

@Powerlord That feels like it should be the opposite of true.

Mario Kart DS is best Mario Kart
Well, no, Diddy Kong Racing 64 best Mario Kart

@GnomeSlice Never did play that. Either version, actually.

Don't play the DS one
it's awful

('cause they had a DS version of that as I recall... one of the 3 or so titles Rare produced on Nintendo systems after the MS buyout)

9:35 PM
I was so sad when I played that

Since it's going home time, I should be going home.
Then figure out what to have for dinner....
or do that on the way home

@GnomeSlice I wouldn't say that, they're not really the same.
I mean they're both cartoon racing games.

@RonanForman SHHH
But no, I know what you mean.
They feel pretty different.
I was just being snarky

Speaking of Diddy Kong Racing, I'm taking my N64 to my new house, so I'm going to force my friends to play it.

Yessssss

9:41 PM
That and Banjo Kazzoie and Conker's Bad Furday.

Running VNC on top of RDP is certainly less than ideal
Oh, and through a firewall not located at my office

oh good! i.imgur.com/DdPjzeh.png This is where I die.

9:57 PM
@GnomeSlice Was it not just a straight port?

@RonanForman No, not even.
A bunch of the characters were removed because Rare

Oh man

The genie is American
TT has this thing where you can draw your own tracks now

I wish I recorded the part where I actually finished the boss by stopping time and hitting a few times in a row in a most cowardly fashion

the silver coin challenges are first person from the genie's perspective and you just tap on shit like a rail shooter
And EVERYTHING abuses the touch screen, the game is designed to destroy your DS
Also there's vehicle upgrades and stuff
but the worst thing of all is that the physics are just terrible
The hovercraft is undrivable
I just sent a kick ass email to Dino Polo Club about mini metro
that shit is happening

10:11 PM
@GnomeSlice ?

indiegamestand press email
Gotta get that shit on the site

ooooh.

Q: How can I get multiple anchors to appear at once?

Baked PotatoThere is an application in the app store called twodots. I am currently stuck on level 135. The objective in there is to sink 9 anchors and break 5 ice blocks within 30 moves.
