You could just upload the image and then make it a text link, y'know
That's how I usually do it

That works?
Oh, nice.
I take it you don't recognize any of those, @GraceNote?

@GnomeSlice C'mon dude, you can do better than that.

@OrigamiRobot What?

I recognize one. Just kinda trying to remember if it actually had a source or if it was just an original drawing by that artist.

11:03 PM
@GnomeSlice Lots of people take serious offense to the word "crippled"

@OrigamiRobot I'm an asshole.
4

@GnomeSlice You don't have to be.
4

What's offensive about 'crippled'?
This one... I don't even know. (Probably nsfw in a fully-clothed kind of way)
@GraceNote Which?

@GnomeSlice Lots of people use it in a demeaning manner, I guess?

@Shinrai ...How?
If someone is crippled/handicapped/disabled... they just are. It's not like they can help it.

11:05 PM
@GnomeSlice Think the way a lot of people use "retarded" and you won't be far off

@GnomeSlice You put down three words there.
They might have the same denotation, but not the same connotation.

@GnomeSlice Do you understand that words can have an impact beyond their definition?

Also, probably @GraceNote's new way of dealing with me:

@ArdaXi This. "Crippled" can sometimes sort of imply that they're unable to do things as well as people who aren't, aka there's something wrong with them

11:07 PM

That's from Manabi Straight, but that's besides the point.

@GnomeSlice Image saved for future use.

@Shinrai There IS something wrong with them. They're crippled. I don't see the point in trying to avoid it.
@GraceNote Which, the last one?
That was quick.

Well, yeah

@GnomeSlice You make me sad for humanity.

11:08 PM
@GnomeSlice There's something DIFFERENT about them, not wrong. I mean, I see what you mean, but I can see how it could hurt their feelings

@GnomeSlice You... don't realise you're being offensive right now?

@OrigamiRobot You're trying to tell me that there isn't something wrong with them? It doesn't make them a worse person, but trying to avoid acknowledging that they can't do some of the things other people can do isn't going to help anything either.

@GnomeSlice I can't play guitar. Is there something wrong with me?

@GraceNote Which was the one you recognized before?
@OrigamiRobot No. But that's not something you're supposed to be born with.

@GnomeSlice Nor is, say, the ability to walk. Or talk.

11:10 PM
I understand how people would be offended, but I just don't agree with that kind of thinking. I'm disabled. I have ADHD and tourettes.
Those are both things that are wrong with me.
They're not what supposed to be happening.

@GnomeSlice I just find it hard to believe you can't understand how some people might find this offensive. You're thick-skinned and logical thinking, clearly, but some people aren't.

@GnomeSlice What's "supposed to be happening?"

@ArdaXi Not ADHD and Tourettes.
I could look for some medical graphs and chemical charts if you like.

@GnomeSlice According to whom?

You're asserting a norm that isn't necessarily a norm outside of being a societal norm.

11:11 PM
Well, either way, I'm damaged.

I wouldn't PERSONALLY be offended by it either, but that's no excuse to say everybody should shrug it off

@Shinrai Saying 'cripple' isn't offensive to anyone.

@GnomeSlice Just because you're okay with calling yourself damaged doesn't mean everyone with ADHD, Tourette's or both is fine with it.

You're not calling anyone a cripple.

gotta love license compatibility between wikipedia and stackexchange :D

11:11 PM
@GnomeSlice That's just plain wrong.

You're not making fun of anyone who is a cripple.
@ArdaXi To a fictional character?

@GnomeSlice You might be accepting of what you consider, but others don't consider that same direction.

@GnomeSlice What if they FEEL like you are?

@Shinrai Then... how could they possibly think that.

@GnomeSlice You can't just assert that nobody will be offended by something.

11:12 PM
@ArdaXi This.

I thought the ability to realize that there are thoughts beyond your own was something acquired very early in life.

Someone who needs a wheelchair is crippled. That's what being crippled means. It's an ugly word, but not necessarily an offensive one.
@OrigamiRobot THERE MUST BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH ME ON NO
ლ(ಥ益ಥლ)

@GnomeSlice Not necessarily, but possibly. In this particular case, probably.

This is an example of why some people don't feel comfortable bringing up what they find offensive in chat. Telling people that they don't have the right to be offended doesn't create an environment where people feel safe.

A cripple is a person or animal with a physical disability, particularly one who is unable to walk because of an injury or illness. The word was recorded as early as 950 AD, and derives from the Proto-Germanic krupilaz. The German and Dutch words Krüppel and kreupel are cognates. The word generally came to be regarded as pejorative when used for people, in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada during the 1960s. Of late, In other English-speaking countries, the term is still widely used without pejorative connotations. Cripple is also a transitive verb, meaning "cause a disabi...

11:13 PM
@OrigamiRobot Admittedly, that wasn't exactly the best angle to come at this.

> A cripple is a person or animal with a physical disability, particularly one who is unable to walk because of an injury or illness.
@GraceNote Ahahahaha I couldn't resist, I'm not actually flipping out.

@GnomeSlice Nobody is debating what the word means.

> The word [cripple] generally came to be regarded as pejorative when used for people, in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada during the 1960s.

@FallenAngelEyes Who said people don't have the right to be offended?

@GnomeSlice I know that, but I'm actually irked myself.

11:14 PM
@ArdaXi Well, that's foolish.

@GnomeSlice You did by claiming the word isn't offensive.

@GnomeSlice You did? Well, you implied it.

2 mins ago, by GnomeSlice
@Shinrai Saying 'cripple' isn't offensive to anyone.

@GnomeSlice Now you're being offensive again.

Not if you're just saying it.

11:14 PM
You're calling the offended people foolish.

I APOLOGIZE.
IF ANYONE WAS OFFENDED.
BY THE TERM 'CRIPPLED'.

@ArdaXi In the 1970s/1980s, in Germany, the autonomous disability rights movement , also called cripples movement, took confidently claim for themselves, this word in the sense of a Reappropriation.

@GnomeSlice I'm not trying to demonize you, nor is anyone else here. I just want you to try to understand.

@ArdaXi What I meant was that it's not inherently offensive.

@GraceNote Yea I was going for more of a statement on maturity, but I see how this looks pretty bad beside this topic.

My las...

@GnomeSlice You don't get to decide that.
Offence is not an inherent trait, it's subjective.

@ArdaXi By that logic, this phrase could be inherently offensive to SOMEONE.

No, because inherently cannot apply to offensive.

@GnomeSlice The issue is that you are arguing that a person is can't be offended.

Anything can possibly be offensive to someone, but you can't deny offence when someone has claimed it. That's disrespectful and offensive in itself.

11:17 PM
@ArdaXi Then explain to me why my 'shut up' flag was validated almost immediately.
@OrigamiRobot No... I said they won't be offended by seeing the word.
I don't see the point of the stigma around the term.

@GnomeSlice And you can't claim that.

It's just making people feel bad about saying it

This is why I try to bring up stuff that I find offensive here. Because you know what? I like this site and I like the people here. And I want other people to like it as much as I do. But other people are less likely to like it too if we have a chat environment where people feel unsafe about speaking up about how words affect them.

@ArdaXi I can bloody try dammit.

@GnomeSlice Because someone who saw it thought it was offensive, and they were fast onto the scene.

11:18 PM
@GnomeSlice You can't assume what other people will feel when they do or do not see a word.

@GnomeSlice It's simply false.

@GraceNote Oh yeah, well... I.... gah...

There's a word you could say to me that you'd think is totally innocuous that would cause me to lose my shit, for instance
regardless of how you say it
(in this case because it's a trigger for a severe phobia, but still)

TL;DR: Cripple: used since 950 AD - considered offensive in CA, USA & UK since 196x - used by cripples themselfes as Reappropriation.

@GnomeSlice That doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

11:19 PM
@Shinrai DON'T EVER SAY INNOCUOUS AROUND ME AGAIN YOU WIENER.

Now, you can argue about the validity of action to be taken on the offence, for example, if I claim to be offended by the word 'Hello', I doubt the message will be removed, but I still have the right to feel offended.

And on that note... gbye, guys!

@ArdaXi So feel offended.

Later, @Raven

@alexanderpas Not everyone agrees with reappropriation though.

11:19 PM
Not everyone who feels offended necessarily has to be accommodated, but it could at least be taken into account, rather than denied.

@ArdaXi That wouldn't encourage me to remove 'hello' from my post.

@GnomeSlice The problem is that you're implying people aren't ALLOWED to be offended. Maybe this is just poor word choice, I dunno

@GnomeSlice I realise, that was the point I'm trying to make.

@Shinrai Where are you people getting this from? That's not it at all.

I would love to stick around and debate this, but I have to go watch awesome TV with @IanPugsley and @spugsley

11:20 PM
@GnomeSlice You're basically denying that people are offended.

Later @Origami

@ArdaXi Just like I'm not really inclined to remove 'cripple' from the relevant message.

@OrigamiRobot enjoy

@OrigamiRobot Whooo third wheel!

@GnomeSlice You implied such when you said that the word wasn't offensive on its own.

11:20 PM
@FallenAngelEyes the word "nigger" is going trough reappropriation too.

@GnomeSlice And that's your prerogative, as it were.

@GnomeSlice When you say point-blank "X is not offensive, period, it isn't offensive, no matter what".

@GraceNote It's notttttttttttttttt

But you can't deny that people might find it offensive.

It implies that anybody who IS offended is Wrong, capital W.

11:21 PM
@GnomeSlice This is what you can't do. Deny it.

@Shinrai I... I never... what?

@GnomeSlice Yes, but you said this in response to people finding it offensive.

You're basically saying to people who are offended: "You're wrong."

That's like saying that 'you don't have the right to say maple trees are offensive!'

@ArdaXi easily offended people are easily offended.

11:21 PM
@alexanderpas You can't make a blanket statement about an entire population though by saying "It's okay to say it because they're taking it back!" Not everyone in that population feels the same way.

@GnomeSlice We all used to live together. It's not so much a third wheel situation when they're both good friends.

@alexanderpas Like I said, they don't need always to be accommodated.

I'm not going to walk up to someone in a wheelchair, and say 'how's it going cripple'?
I was talking about a fictional character.

Yay! I'm a Lama again!

@GnomeSlice The context doesn't necessarily matter.

11:22 PM
@James Welcome back.

@GnomeSlice But, you don't think somebody who is in a wheelchair, overhearing the word 'cripple' in any context, might be sensitive about it?

@GnomeSlice Yes, which we'd probably tell you about the same propsect of respecting what other people who say they're offended think.

@GnomeSlice Thanks :)

A pejorative term can be pejorative regardless of context.

@Shinrai Perhaps, but oh fuck you're right, that's just silly.

11:23 PM
@GnomeSlice You're doing it again.
Insulting people.

@GnomeSlice Well, if you think it's silly, I have to think you're just a little insensitive. Sorry.

@ArdaXi nope. if you describe somebody it might not be.

@Shinrai Hence the oh fuck you're right

@alexanderpas I said can be.
@GnomeSlice It's stricken, in case you didn't notice.

@ArdaXi Oh, I guess that was poor formatting.
There we go.

11:24 PM
You're still calling it silly.
Which is offensive.

I was finishing my thought.

How does that change anything?

Which now seems pretty stupid.

You're saying it's silly to be sensitive about the word 'cripple' out of context. That's offensive and very insensitive.

@ArdaXi ...How?

11:25 PM
Sometimes you have to be insensitive to make your statement. People believing in fairytales, yet picking and choosing what they believe of that fairy tail are delusional.

@GnomeSlice It sounds like you're saying "now that you mention it... oh wait, you're wrong"
@alexanderpas Let's not get into that right now.

Kewl, I just noticed the right side of the screen keeps a list of the starred things people have said :)

@GnomeSlice nope, still raining.

That just sounds like you've given up trying to understand how it was insensitive.
