12:00 AM
Or maybe it's 50k, I don't care about money.

Terrance and Owen is gone?!?

@TheXed this question is way OT askubuntu.com/review/close/633712

I didn't say they were "gone".

i'm blind :P

But yeah it's kind of like a "Who is John Galt" moment from "Atlas Shrugged" movie trilogy.

12:18 AM
@Serg why exec gnome-terminal -e bash instead of just exec bash?

@Zacharee1 why is it ot?

@TheXed "any Linux distro"

@IanC because you won't see anything if you just exec bash. Shell will run but without any terminal attached to it

I don't know what cigarettes cost in your country but here in Canada they are $115 per carton. Some nazi fascist tolatarium deep-state hidden regime sets the prices and Canadians aren't allowed to vote in a referendum. Sorry watching US elections review and getting frustrated about everything just now.

@Serg makes sense, I never notices it because I usually call bash from a terminal :p
let me try it on the custom shortcut now, maybe that's what was wrong with the shortcut after all
calling sh or bash without a gnome-terminal
it worked!!!
thanks @Serg
perfect, you guys have any way of separating the stuff you add on /bin from the stuff that is installed? I thought about changing the owner to the my user instead of having it root:root, but I'm wondering that might not be the best solution

12:41 AM
@IanC if your user ID is the only one with root privileges I don't see the point.

@Zacharee1 which means it still applies to Ubuntu?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix my user doesn't have UID 0, it has root permissions through sudo. The point was just to have a quick way to see which scripts/binaries on /bin were added manually by me. So when I typed `ll` there would be a bunch of files with owner:
root:root

and then the ones added manually would have
user:user

@TheXed OP doesn't seem interested in getting Ubuntu to work, rather finding out what the problem is, which is unrelated to Ubuntu.

Fair enough.

@IanC what do you mean ? stuff that's installed ? as installed from PPA ?

12:47 AM
@Serg yeah, know which ones were added through apt/apt-get or by source code and which one were scripts/binaries added manually by you (just in case I forget in some time)

@IanC my User ID is 1000, systemd is 1, I have no clue what root's number is or indeed who root even is.

@IanC there's no real / systematic way to do it. You could look in apt logs, to see what was installed and on what day. You can use grep 'package-name' /var/apt/history.log , but keep in mind those logs are rotated , so eventually that info will be lost

@WinEunuuchs2Unix roots UID is 0, on ubuntu the users with root privileges actually are not root users, they use sudo as an interface to run commands as root
@Serg for now I'll keep using this small trick of changing the owner from root:root to user:user on the ones I add then, I think about something later
maybe I'll do an app to control the programs I install? including the ones I write :)

@IanC if some guy walks up to me and says "I am root I'm taking control of your personal laptop" I'll say "This isn't Guardians of the Galaxy movie, get out of here you over-grown tree!"

That's Groot...

12:57 AM
yeah I know... artistic licences :)
you must admit it sounded good :D

lol

I need five points to reach 3456 rep... sings "Uh uh oh it's magic you know, never believe it's not so"
Holy crapoli I just made 70 points in 2 minutes and missed seeing 3456!

1:12 AM
lol
Scandolus...
now you are going to have to wait for 4567

pffttt... you guys are up-voting me to mess with my mind.... thanks but I'd rather earn the points honestly.

who was upvoting?

I don't have powers yet to see up-voters

sigh . . . .maybe one day I won't have to beat my head against the wall and try to answer the question "Why am I doing this crap?"

I am to busy making a photo book to be upvoting people

1:15 AM
@Serg because shit flows down hill and you are at the bottom of the EE ladder :D

^ looks like it
@TheXed same here, busy trying to figure out how to do root locus sketch for control systems

Is a photo book like a facebook?

No, on shutterfly.com

Oh I used the EnhanceIO HDD to SSD software before based on FlashCache that Facebook used to use.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I don't even know what that is supposed to mean.

1:19 AM
500 GB slow HDD, 30GB fast mSATA (read SSD)... you cache Ubuntu, Chrome, frequently used programs and Data to 30GB... it worked great for a year until I bricked Intel RST which held Windwos 7 on the same mSATA caching the same 500GB HDDD.

Why did you brick it?

@Zacharee1 how about we trade places ? you go do control systems, i go sort all the merges and do java ?

nahh

dangit

One day I forgot to decelerate Windows which was using 19GB of the 30GB before doing something with grub... Can't remember now 18 months later exactly how. Anyway moral of the story is don't put Windows and Ubuntu on the same HDD in different partitions and caches them to the same SSD in different partitions.

1:23 AM
git dang
git dang --hard

@Serg PLC is where it's all at! stay with it young man.

question. how do you get the firmware for b43 module?
My info:
02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11a/b/g [14e4:4312] (rev 01)

@DmitryKudriavtsev Broadcom and B43 stuff is like every second question in AU, you can't miss it.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Studied those too. We played with one of Rockwell's PLC, can't recall the model though. PLC are fairly easy, it's just boolean logic throughout

oh ok found it
fwcutter huh?

1:27 AM
@DmitryKudriavtsev run lshw -c network
it will say driver

fwcutter? sounds like a swear word

zsh: command not found: lshw

@DmitryKudriavtsev ah, wait , you're using bsd aren't you ?

Ok, so . . . that's not normal. lshw is standard command on any Linux

1:29 AM
dmitry@DmitryE6410: ~ % uname -a
Linux DmitryE6410 4.8.2-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Oct 17 08:11:46 CEST 2016 x86_64 GNU/Linux

that doesn't tell much, only kernel version

an Arch user.... shrieks and runs

is there a way to get nautilus to show a preview of jpgs?

 dmitry@DmitryE6410: ~ % lspci

@TheXed you mean like thumbnails of j pegs?

1:31 AM
Yes
exactly that

@DmitryKudriavtsev install lshw and save yourself from trouble

of course there is, I just don't know how.

Also, uname -a isn't telling OS , it only tells kernel version
normal way to do it is cat /etc/os-release

use 'uname -r' for OS

1:32 AM
Oh I see...

what next?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix uname -r is kernel release
and it is in man page by the way

@WinEunuuchs2Unix because I am looking at pictures on a NAS, I have to enable thumbnails for remote locations...

@Serg thanks for reminder... what about lsb-release?

1:33 AM
@DmitryKudriavtsev good ! That's proper . Now once you have lshw installed, do lshw -c network

@DmitryKudriavtsev also , please don't post images. It's just text and easier to read for people if you copy it directly. Thank you

sorry :(

you're OK :)

It was a bit easier for me

1:35 AM
Did someone just ping me?

no, at least wasn't me . . .

Oh my computer made the pint noise...
odd...

@DmitryKudriavtsev you look like 12 years old. Don't you like the way Vladmir Putin waits 7 days before saying something but Obama says something in 15 minutes and looks like an idiot 3 days later/
Oops so sorry , you're all grown up now... my bad!

what is the age limit on this site anyways? 13?

1:39 AM
Also I am in the USA and I don't follow politics

I think that is what CIPA dictates...

And that's why you don't post pictures of yourself on the internet . . .
unless you want employment

Owen Hines was 15 too and he was from Houston... before he dissappeared.

(Children's Internet Protection Act)

changed it

1:40 AM
haha Serg only hookers post pictures for employment, the rest of us post our works.

can someone get a mod to refresh it?

what is "eleven"?

oops
sorry inside joke on ppcg

/me deletes facebook

so eleven = refresh on ppcg?

1:42 AM
no

@DmitryKudriavtsev it will refresh over time.

just general mod powers abuse
yeah I know, it just refreshes immediately if a moderator triggers something

It might take some time because it is stuck in peoples cache...

@TheXed must be the mod in disguise!

well if @Seth would come out of his slumber...

1:44 AM
I used to get @Seth and @Serg mixed up.... those four letter words starting with S

speak of the devil.

snow :)
In Edmonton (where I live) snow is a four letter word.

@Seth how's it going ?

lol...

1:45 AM
@Serg I have a migraine, so not that great :(

@Seth in that case go back to your slumber, we will just wake @NathanOsman up.

it's okay. What do you need?

@DmitryKudriavtsev actually needed you...

@DmitryKudriavtsev are your ancestors from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, etc?

@Seth try massaging soft spot between thumb and index, helps me

1:47 AM
so I've heard that there's a way for moderators to clear the thumbnail cache?
@WinEunuuchs2Unix yes

mm, I think so.

@DmitryKudriavtsev Kind of hard to be from three different slavic speaking countries at the same time!

Just Russia

@Serg I will give it a shot.

I love Russia, my new favorite for the last couple of years. Moscow or St. Petersburg region?

1:49 AM
My ancestors came to America on the Mayflower...
and so did my wives...

@DmitryKudriavtsev did you want me to refresh your chat profile?

yes please

I hope our families didn't have any secrete affairs going on on the ship...

@DmitryKudriavtsev okay, done. It will still take a little while for individual browser caches to update.

1:50 AM
yeah, I jsut refreshed and it appeared. Thanks!

Now Dmitry looks like a Ukranian throw blanket or easter egg.

please stop

his icon here i mean.

@DmitryKudriavtsev why are you using Arch, if you don't mind me asking ?

I like Arch. Just couldn't find any information on where to download b43 firmware on the arch wiki and totally forgot about google

1:52 AM
NOOOOOOOOOO Serg don't go to the other side!!!!!

Arch is pretty awesome
It allows you to customize every aspect of your system fromthe ground up

Actually I plan to try Arch next year after Ubuntu 16.10 and EnhanceIO.

The base install is just a command line, you have to install and configure graphical things yourself
It's a rolling release system so there are no versions to upgrade to, you just get the latest versions of the packages as they are added to the repositories

Arch is OK. I just don't like the fact that you have to spend hours of tweaking it before you get Arch working. I've had it in VM. Took me hours to get GUI working

I'm not much of a graphical guy in the first place... I just think Arch documentation rocks.

1:54 AM
The package manager is also very nice.

Anyone have a raspberry pi?

pacman?

@TheXed i do

There is something called the AUR which is the Arch User Repository. It contains pretty much every piece of software in existence.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Yes
@TheXed I do

@Serg @DmitryKudriavtsev what version?

1:55 AM
Raspberry Pi 3 with Raspbian (newest version)

Raspberry Pi 2, Ubuntu snappy

Okay I have Rpi2 (x2), both Raspbian Jesse Light, I am trying to decide if it is worth while to upgrade to a pi 3 for my latest project...

Meh, i wouldn't bother
but if you have money, sure

What's the max size micro SD RAM thingy you can use in Raspberry Pi 2016 vs. Banana Pi?
16 gb?

sd card can be any size , iirc
ram in pi 2 is 1 gb i think

1:58 AM
@Serg well here is the thing...

Are you sure, my alcatel phone has a max micro or min sd ram card size of 128GB

my project is, project catch the pumpkin smashers...
So I am going to use a rpi2 for that...
but then I lose my test pi

Oh I used to listen to the "Smashing Pumpkins" and then I saw hundreds of smashed up pumpkins on a road in Nanaimo BC... weird actually.

so I have this
and I am going to buy a outside/night vision camera
and put the rpi in my garage...
drill a hole through the wall and mount the camera...
but I have to figure out how to get power to the pi...
So that is my real question...
I could run a extension cord to to the pi.
or???

um . . . if you want it to be on 24/7, extension cord. For a few hours at night, maybe use a battery pack

2:03 AM
I was thinking solar...
but I don't know if it would get enough sun...

battery charged by solar panels on the garage roof

that could be done too, but extension chord is more reliable

I can't get it to the roof

A little ole'pi wouldn't draw much.
I'll sell you a ladder.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix and a extension cord? I am into bundle packs...
another thing I am a bit concerned about is how much dust it will collect out there...

2:05 AM
We buy ladders in bulk from Louisville USA and extension cords from China... np to sell 1 of each to USA.

Hmm...China...I don't want to burn down my house...

Shipping might be 4 grand, but money is no object when it's yours.
I could rip off the made in China sticker and put on made in USA, ULC approved for an extra dollar 50.

lol...
I have a ladder, and an extension cord...

$4,001.50 all together... plus price of the ladder and extension cord... lets say 400 bucks for that.

I just need a day worker, to mount, run cable, and stand in front of the camera to set of the motion detector for testing, can you ship me a day worker?

2:07 AM
Yeah, I can find you 11 millions, do you speak spanish?

No, they need to speak English, or at least Spanglish

You just need to say "undelah, undelah, ariba, ariba" or something like that.

or el bano....

sounds like a dirty word.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix uh well I guess it can be...it means bathroom.
or the bathroom

2:18 AM
@TheXed baño
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Andale, Arriba

@Zacharee1 I am not the Spanish speaking person here :=P

Andale literally means "walk to it"

I only know what I know from going to Mexico 10 years ago (before the drug lords took over)

2:32 AM
@Zacharee1 thanks for spelling of Andale and Arriba... they mean hurry right?
sorry for delay just finished my 20 CV's :D

CVs?
And should I read a book before bed, or watch some tv episode of something on netflix?

@TheXed implement quicksort in C

I don't know what that means, but sounds like fun...

"walk to it"... fascinating phrase.
@TheXed are you sure you're not a mod from twitter that got grandfathered into AU with 12k rep and mod powers?

@TheXed quicksort is a sorting algorithm. Sells well because of the name :) It's quite popular in Universities, not sure how popular it is in the real world.

2:38 AM
@Serg now that you mention it I think I remember quicksort discussed in school, but maybe not programmed in it.
well time to say poof

@WinEunuuchs2Unix no, why would you say that?

3:14 AM
umm
i just used this site (have I been pwned)
I typed in Serg as a joke

@Edity lol what?

wait
serg has been pwned

wat ?

I don't understand

just see

3:19 AM
O_o

type your name or email

And I have not visited any of those sites

it will show up red if you have been pwned
I've not been pwned

hmmm just about every site i have ever been too!

3:43 AM
sigh . . . .

@Serg whats up?

@TheXed same thing, trying to understand why am i doing engineering . . . . and why in the world we need matlab yet aren't required to take class on matlab

@Serg I see...

also somebody asked me when do i graduate again , which is the worst question and i hate it with fierry passion

@Serg tell them "when I feel like it"
I suppose it is about equal to when people ask my wife "when are you having kids?"

3:50 AM
I said " I don't know, because my college doesn't wanna let me go"
in chinese it sounds a bit milder
like a relative visiting and you don't want them to go

@Serg I don't know I am pretty much good with whenever my relatives want to go...the sooner the better :-P

lol , ok . . .let's assume it's actually the relative you like we're talking about and you enjoy their stay actually

@Serg I don't think I have any of those...they're all exhausting...but that might be more my problem then them...
that is to say not because they aren't likable people, but that I am an introvert...and a little bit of human interaction goes a long way...probably the same reason I don't like my kids...
just joking about the kids, of course i like them

i sort of oscillate between being introvert and seeking interaction

4:06 AM

@Serg this is totally me. Too little interaction and I get really stir crazy and depressed. Too much and I get withdrawl and depressed.
I'm not a good social person heh.

neither am I. Humans by nature are social creatures, plus we constantly seek validation of our own selves in the environment . . . I enjoy spending time with friends, but once it gets to the topic of college and when anyone graduates , or politics - i feel uncomfortable then
so . . .to some extend it's all about certain level of comfort you can find with people . . .

@Serg @Serg I am good with close friends...sometimes my wife...sometimes the kids if they are not being annoying...but other then that just stay away lol

also , woo - hoo, at least something starts to make sense in this whole root locus and control system stuff . . . So I might not fail as hard on the exam . . . still might fail, just not as hard

Time for me to go bed

user227867
4:14 AM
@Seth Hello Seth, lol. I am here to give you some interaction, lol.

@TheXed well, good night then :)

cya tomorrow most likely

definitely

@WillHunting haha, hi! What's up?
Install Ubuntu MATE 16.10?

user227867
@Seth It was disappointing cos it could not even shut down properly! I had to manually shut down each time, so now I am on Mint.

4:15 AM
That's not good :/
I wonder if Arch breaks this much..

I think Arch is "broken" from the beginning , and you put it together piece by piece

user227867
@Seth Anyway, because Debian cannot start up properly and Ubuntu cannot shut down properly, I think I will stick to Mint forever. And because Mate cannot disable the recent documents list in the menu, I will stick to Cinnamon forever. So it is Clement Lefebvre's work all the way from now. Oh, I am still waiting to see your pic, lol.

@WillHunting That's just a bummer. But at least Mint works :)
haha, still no pic :p
Maybe someday, when I'm less insecure ;)

user227867
Yeah, maybe ten more years, lol.

user227867
I finally watched 'Jason Bourne' last week!

user227867
4:20 AM
And last night, I watched 'Good Will Hunting' again!

was it good?

user227867
Yes, all Matt Damon movies are good.

haha, fair enough.

user227867
There is no need to even suspect they are not good. It is not possible.

user227867
The only question is whether it is 9/10 or 10/10.

user227867
4:23 AM
Hmm I bet you look like Matt Damon @seth LOL.

LOL

AHH
ITS ALL BRIGHT BLUE

user227867
I like these movies: Blue Lagoon, Blue Velvet, Blue Desert, Blue Car.

user227867
My gmail theme is blue, my desktop background is blue, and my coffee mug is blue.

would you say you're feeling . . . blue ?

user227867
4:27 AM
It is not relevant if I feel blue or not. I am suffering from much worse things...

understandable

user227867
This morning I watched 'A Beautiful Mind' again. I like the line 'I need to believe that something extraordinary is possible.'

a really blue addiction

user227867
My favourite line in 'Good Will Hunting' is 'It's not your fault.'

user227867
And my favourite line in Mariah Carey's songs is 'There can be miracles when you believe.'

user227867
4:33 AM
You all enjoy yourselves, bye.

see ya

5:26 AM
@Zacharee1 Actually, I have nothing to say to you but an apology. Last time I was in the room I was talking about you, and I @ you I guess you saw all those messages already, so you know what it is about. @WinEunuuchs2Unix mentioned the old posts again and I directed him to our meta post, and he answered it meta.askubuntu.com/a/16279/527764 and I wrote a comment which I now am ashamed of and want to delete, but I can't delete it without allowing you to read it first
I was also talking about the same thing with @edwinksl here chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/33089683#33089683 - I didn't @ you because you haven't been in that room so it wouldn't work, but you can see what I said mentioning you
now I think I was completely out of order to put any blame on you for either that comment on your own meta post, @WinEunuuchs2Unix's meta post, or his comments here

I'm back now. I had a really nasty headache. Went to bed after supper and woke up three hours later feeling a lot better.
Now I won't be able to sleep. :P

@NathanOsman you had a cold?

Nope, just a headache.

ah okay

@Zacharee1 In that conversation I was talking/thinking about how we are not all the same and we all make AU better in our own ways - you have been fantastically supportive of our cleanup efforts and your mission to reduce the CV queue has had a huge positive effect on our efforts
you are totally not responsible for how other people feel about what I and others are doing to expand the queue
I'm apologise unreservedly for saying negative stuff about your work and trying to blame you for stuff that is my problem and my responsibility to deal with
oops I not I'm???

5:41 AM
?

(I'm done, sorry folks, resume!)
I'm apologise not I apologise
I can't even say sorry grammatically!!!

oh fat finger people problem
i understand

spam!
Aims lasers...
Pew pew...

@edwinksl <3

Lol.
> "An npm package to check if a number is equal to 13."
Because that's totally something we need to often do.

5:54 AM
#justnodejsthings

6:10 AM
@NathanOsman totally useful for superstitious devs

I suppose...
I'm all for code reuse but that is ridiculous... even for Node.

Wait till i make app indicator for that
in C
with inline assembly

goddamnit
Netflix blocks Hurricane Electric.

O_o
edwinksl is glitched from my pc

6:38 AM
@KazWolfe netflix started blocking a lot of things, especially proxies
on the same topic . . . HMA list seems to be still empty
