10:10 AM
I just found a new bug in GNOME 3.22! :D

user136984
At least most of the bugs from 3.20 seem to have been fixed.

what's the bug?

user136984
Nautilus doesn't show a folder as containing any items if when it previously checked there weren't any. Even if there are now. A small bug, but still an annoying one for me at the moment...

Ah yes knowing things are there but being unable to see them would make me a bit paranoid.

Q: How do I message another user here?

veranediI'm new here and would like to ask the user of this question Running caffe gives error Check failed: error == cudaSuccess (30 vs. 0) unknown error if they have checked this link http://docs.roguewave.com/totalview/8.14.1/html/index.html#page/User_Guides/totalviewug-about-cuda.31.4.html because it...

10:22 AM
I guess that's indeed one way to message another user ...

10:34 AM
Now to find the 6.5 version of cuda for ubuntu 16.04...

11:00 AM
And now to recompile everything (because new compiler)

hahaha

pff it takes more then an hour to compile
And if it worker I have another problem with what to do with the bounty
ugh
I suspect my drivers are now going to fail when I reboot

11:25 AM
@Thijser that sounds reassuring.

yhea well I just got an error that the nvidia drivers crashed
But we must press on!

After some troubleshooting my /var/log/messages, secure, spooler, maillog and cron are still empty. Anybody has some ideas?

come over to the coyote's den

11:58 AM
@muru If you consider Braiam and me the two ends of the scale of the answer "How many tags should I use?", that'll go some distance to explain that edit. I was on there for another flag and noticed he'd bombed all but one tag. I agree that not all of them are [completely] necessary but they're all relevant to the problem. And for a folksonomical system to work, having too many is vastly more useful than missing relevant tags.

@Oli Ok, but you just recreated the header tag. Does that need to be here?

Oli
Sort of. It should probably be "linux-headers" and I don't really understand why there isn't already a tag for that.
Ah, because "the linux tag isn't allowed" tag blacklist exists.

There's a blacklist banning linux-* tags?

Oli
Seemingly

kernerl-headers, then? :D

Oli
12:07 PM
That'd be better. I'll just go with kernel for now.

@muru I'd remove the blacklist >:)

Oli
@jorge ok, I am adding ^linux|unix$ as intrinsic blacklisted tags then — Jeff Atwood ♦ Sep 26 '11 at 21:37
That's when it happened.

aha

Oli
Is that just a bad regex? Is that just nixing things that start with linux and things that end in unix?

yes it is that

Oli
12:09 PM
Should it be ^(linux|unix)$?

@Oli hmm. I'd doubt the $ is needed (is that not "ends-with"?
you are looking for "begins with either linux or unix"?

Fixed. My problem was Systemd Journal Rate Limiting

And no mods involved!

I guess when you have lots of 3k+ users looking at the recent list, spam gets burned with fire quite quickly.

12:17 PM
You don't need 3k to flag spams.

No, but spam flags alone won't delete an answer, will they? Don't you need close votes?

@AndroidDev 7 spam flags
will delete a post, and get an instant -100 rep loss for the poster (if they have any)

6 flags should be enough.

I've always seen the post get deleted at the 7th downvote, though.

Oh. That's a harsh penalty!

12:21 PM
@muru maybe someone added a downvote

Could be, but most times it's 7

@jokerdino - Did someone have to review it --^ , or the system deemed it helpful?

@AndroidDev 6 flags

The system, automatically, once it gets enough flags, or a mod also agress with a flag

I correctly selected a dupe for this, right? askubuntu.com/questions/841223/…

@jokerdino - Lol, just remembered you asked me to make it inline next time :)

@AndroidDev No, not me.

Q: Fix the Linux tag blacklist

OliA million years ago (in Internet years), Jeff put a tag blacklist in place to stop people tagging things with linux or unix. Probably makes sense but I think his regex was bum: ^linux|unix$ I suspect (though it's been a while since I've meddled with .NET regexes) that it's interpreted as: ...

@AndroidDev well OP agrees at least :)

@Zanna Yeah, I just saw that :)

12:31 PM
I hope that was not a misclick..

hmm good point hahaha

@jokerdino You think it's not a dupe?

it's totally a dupe imho. Could not be more dupe than that

when an OP agrees that quickly, though..

user136984
What is the link to that Q&A or help documentation (I don't remember which it was) which talks about X and Y and how it's not always about answering the question exactly, but providing a better solution? It was something like that anyway.

12:36 PM
Can you be more vague? You are being too specific ;)

user136984
@Zanna: Not sure...

It's what Zanna posted.

@ParanoidPanda the XY problem is more about answering the actual problem instead of whatever the OP has arrived at while trying to solve that problem

idk

12:40 PM
We might have XY problem here then..

i hate Mondays

user136984
Right, not sure if it's exactly what I remembered about... But to give an example, let's say there is a person asking about how to install a really old and dangerously outdated version of some software in order to run a specific thing. And although you could answer the question to explain how to do this, it would be better to instead explain a better more safe way of doing this like a special mode in the latest version in the software rather than doing exactly as the user has asked.

user136984
@muru: Or maybe that is the XY problem?

yeah, that's XY problem.

@ParanoidPanda ah, yes. Sort of like blog.codinghorror.com/the-php-singularity?
Solution to burnt fingers: Hold a can of beer, slowly sipping it. :D

user136984
12:49 PM
:D

user136984
@muru: Oh dear! That's one funny article! :D

Atwood has some pretty awesome articles in his blog. :)

Hmm I updated my video drivers (selected a different one actually) and now I get a different error, anybody willing to have a look (my bounty runs out tomorrow)

Q: Running caffe gives error Check failed: error == cudaSuccess (30 vs. 0) unknown error

ThijserI'm trying to get caffe to run such that I can use it via python. To do this I have followed this tutorial. I'm on Ubuntu 16.04. When I get to make runtest I get the error : $ make runtest CXX/LD -o .build_release/test/test_all.testbin src/caffe/test/test_caffe_main.cpp .build_release/src/caff...

@Anwar good morning.

@TheXed morning :)

@Anwar so you say it is evening, thus this makes me wonder where you are?

Q: Build Pango for Windows

000 000I need binary distribution of Pango for Windows. I have limited experience with using cygwin and I wasn't able to build Pango from source. Links for Windows builds of Pango on this page http://www.pango.org/Download are outdated. I need either: (1) Windows binary distribution for the latest vers...

eh

is pango for windows still maintained?

doubt it

@Anwar so the Middle East?

cygwin is off topic anyways

@TheXed South Asia.

1:50 PM
@Anwar Oh, I see...
Bhutan or Bangladesh

?

@TheXed Bangladesh.

smokey! :)

Cool.
@Anwar I rather do it the hard way, figure out your time zone, and figure out what countries are in that time zone, then guess....

user136984
Yay! My impact has reached ~1.0m on AU now! :D

user136984
They better not all be Trump supporters. :P

2:03 PM

user136984
@Rinzwind: Thanks! :)

I have a 1 in my "reached" amount too >:)

@ParanoidPanda are you too lazy to Thank me? :)
6.9 only

user136984
@Anwar: T...s! ;)

2:07 PM
^ was expected that :D

@ParanoidPanda maybe if you weren't so racist...or rich...I haven't determined which yet...

user136984
@TheXed: What?

@ParanoidPanda your 1 million trump supporters...

user136984
Right...

user136984
I think it's the wording that's tripping me up.

user136984
2:10 PM
Hmm... Maybe I've figured it out, not sure yet.

you are paranoid enough to be a trump supporter yourself >:)

It's not that he want's to be...he has to be...

user136984
Right, now I am very confused... As usual.

Everyone should flag this as low quality or something...and there is probably a duplicate out there too, but I don't have time to find it.

Q: Ubuntu 16.10 | Wifi Network Authentication Required

XJamesWhen i want to connect to my wifi with password pops up a window with the information: enter image description here I Enters the correct password. This is my network card enter image description here

@ParanoidPanda confused panda :=)

user136984

@Rinzwind: Sounds like it should end in ".com". :P

confusedparanoidpanda.com

Firefox can’t find the server at www.confusedparanoidpanda.com.

Check the address for typing errors such as ww.example.com instead of www.example.com

Do you know what this means? >:)
you can register it

@ParanoidPanda do it!

confusedpanda.com shows a page from a domain host

2:23 PM
@Rinzwind no issue with Internet Explorer in my office windows...

user136984
:D

@Takkat you must be on the deep web then...

user136984
Sorry to bring this here, but I am very confused, is that the real Donald Trump in this making a fool of himself or is it just an actor? Because it looks a lot like him, but I can't imagine he would say things like that. So I am now very confused.

@TheXed naa - it was all tightened up from paranoid IT department... so no wonder it always is confusimationed.

user136984
The guy in the mirror clearly, not the other one...

2:27 PM
@ParanoidPanda it's an actor, but it wouldn't have surprised me otherwise...

user136984
@TheXed: Right, it just totally confused me... :D

user136984
It looks a lot like him! :D

user136984
How did they make the face so realistic?

@ParanoidPanda that doesn't seem to be hard today...

user136984
Has Trump got a comedy double?

user136984
2:29 PM
Maybe the double tied the real Trump up in his Trump Tower and it is the double who is running for president. :P

@ParanoidPanda they found it on the black market...that was his face prior to having a face transplant/plastic surgery...

user136984
:D

My internet was just freaking out, what was the last message you got from me?

Q: When will there eventually be no questions left?

DavidOver time, obviously more and more questions are asked on this site, and such, many people have the same questions, which are then considered duplicates, but eventually by way of law, eventually we will run out of questions to ask. Now obviously I do not see this happening anywhere in the foresee...

besides this one obviously..

user136984
2:31 PM
Yes, I think that when they were doing his hair they accidentally shaved a guinea pig instead. :P

user136984
This was the last message I got from you @TheXed:

user136984
1 min ago, by TheXed
@ParanoidPanda they found it on the black market...that was his face prior to having a face transplant/plastic surgery...

@ParanoidPanda okay that was it then.

@ParanoidPanda lol, that's Jimmy Fallon
and Trump

user136984
@Zacharee1: What? I am very confused now (veryconfusedparanoidpanda.com)... :D

2:33 PM
It's a fake mirror. Fallon is on one end and Trump is on the other
it's just a window space
if I'm thinking of the right one

Oh the other guy!
Yeah that is Trump

Actually, the one redeeming characteristic Trump has is that he does seem willing to take the piss of himself.

@terdon unless it's not on a TV show or is in a debate

@terdon would you punch yourself in a fist fight?

@TheXed huh?

2:35 PM
WRONNG!

If you wouldn't punch yourself in a fist fight, then you shouldn't make fun of yourself.
Thus he has no redeeming qualities...

@TheXed what?

Think about it.

@TheXed Why in the world not? The ability to make fun of yourself is one of the most important things one can have. Taking yourself too seriously is never a good idea.
Everyone should be able and willing to be the butt of a joke every now and then.

butt

2:38 PM

yay on my way to 200

October 13 was a bad day for you :)

2:54 PM
@terdon I don't know I don't make the rules of being a public figure...I just follow them.

3:11 PM
That has nothing to do with being a public figure, it applies to everyone.

@David - You're not the grammar police anymore?

@terdon oh right...the moral of the story is, don't punch yourself in a fist fight, it won't turn out well for you.

Um. OK

LOL! How does one "accidentally" install GNOME???

Q: My windows doesn't render properly

Viktor Hundahl StrateI accedentially installed gnome with theese commands. sudo apt-add-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3-staging sudo apt-add-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3 sudo apt-get update After I rebooted my computer, some of the gui parts like the outlines of buttons were gone. Screenshot I have tried ...

I don't think they meant they accidentally installed it..I think they meant they installed it without realising the potiental ramicfications.

user136984
3:21 PM
@AndroidDev: That's not installing GNOME, that's just upgrading currently installed GNOME packages.

@ParanoidPanda No, it's adding repos. There's no installing of packages that I can see.

@ParanoidPanda yeah you are right...
He didn't install anything...
at least not from what he has there.
But according to his screenshot, he has it installed...

@Zacharee1 Quick, new Ubuntu misspelling!
@Zacharee1 - "Unbunto" - askubuntu.com/questions/841289/…

I envison hamburger buns in the logo....
Here I took a scren shot incase someone edits it.

@TheXed I already did edit, but it'll live on in revision history.

3:31 PM
Well there is a screen shot anyways...
I just noticed the Microsoft ad too lol

@TheXed How dare you bring a chromebook in here without crouton!? (JK)

@AndroidDev uh...its my work computer...the head of the IT department kind of frowns on unauthorized Operating systems on Chromebooks... I just wish the head of the IT department was more accessaable to me...
So I could tell him about all the benefiets of Crouton...

@TheXed Just kidding...

Me too, I am the head of the IT department...

user136984
He's just commented to say that he did run sudo apt-get dist-upgrade.

3:34 PM
But it really is my work computer...

@TheXed Ummmmm...
So you frown upon unauthorized operating systems on a chromebook?
@chili555 - Wired this time: askubuntu.com/questions/841296/…

3:57 PM
gosh . . . i feel awful

@Serg What's wrong?

@AndroidDev only if they are work devices, I could care less about their personal devices.

4:18 PM
Hello Byte Commander -- you are the only person who partially answered my question (askubuntu.com/questions/840456/…) but I am still stuck. I have added more explanations in my original question. Would be grtaeful if you could give me more help to install this java applet -- thanks

@ByteCommander --^

@terdon same as usual. lack if sleep n college stuff

hello

hey everybody

4:32 PM
@AndroidDev not sure, I don't know much Java haha
not much meaning basically nothing, since I forgot must of the little I knew

That looks like a simple case of using something that's now depricated

@Thijser Which is why I left the comment I did.

Simply rename the file might well work.
Why not simply rename the one file (or move the class out?)

Sushi!

The Twitter bot is running out of stuff to tweet.
In other words, nobody has said anything interesting here lately.

:P

5:05 PM
anybody used conky before ?

@Serg a long time ago.

@TheXed so . . . does it take output from a script that runs continuously ?

Okay so by a long time ago, I meant it has been so long I don't really remember anything about it because it has been about 5-8 years :-P

-_- there's a question, i have half the answer to it, but it requires knowing how conky works. Well . . . i guess I'll have to go with something else

@Serg sorry man.

5:17 PM
that's ok
I've no energy for answering today anyway

@ThomasWard sup?

i should havr slept through first lecture

@Serg you need to come to IL, to the winter wonder land...oh and we are the densest area per person for mirco breweries...

@TheXed maybe one day when I've enough salary to afford travel

I hear walking is cheap...and couch surfing :-P

5:24 PM

relevant comments are already flagged
I can't clean up reliably on the mobile interface though

Too many?

probably requesting too many certificates too frequently

5:37 PM
Yeah, 5 per week per domain.
...apparently.
This throws a blanket over my current setup.
I'm going to have to do some hacking here to get this to work nicely.

@NathanOsman multidomain cert, in one go.
every subdomain in one go. too bad wildcard isn't a LetsEncrypt thing yet

Well, I have two options.
I actually have a wildcard cert for *.quickmediasolutions.com from Comodo.
So I could try my hand at getting Traefik to use that for the quickmediasolutions.com subdomains.

Or... I could give Traefik a list of predefined subdomains to include in the certificate (which hopefully just requests one certificate with multiple SANs).
If I go with #2, I have to wait a week.
(Well, 5 days or so, whatever.)

6:05 PM
O_O
Now I see how I hit the rate-limit.
How did that happen?

yay random broken cron

\o

@ThomasWard It's not cron and it's not Traefik.
O_o O_o O_o
I think I just found a live security hole.
Oh... maybe not.

easy with those claims are people will start laughing at you.and pointing

Never mind.
I misinterpreted something.

Turned out not to be the case.

user136984
Does anybody else have Gmail here?

ofcourse
both a business and private account

user136984
Right, then could you please send a YouTube link to yourself and let me know if the normal little preview image is shown at the bottom of the email which allows you to watch it in a built-in player? Because I had that feature yesterday, but today I don't get it. I briefly get a big white space where it should be, but then it just snaps up.

user136984

I just want to know if it's website-wide or just me.

user136984
So that I can know if it's likely to be their end or mine.

Tasks for this week: finish up the new version of QHttpEngine and get initial SMTP server support into Hectane.

does not seem to work @ParanoidPanda

user136984
@Rinzwind: Well, at least it's not just me then! :D

:D

user136984

Could you please report it to Google? I would but the bug reporter seems to also be broken... :P

user136984
And I'm hoping that that's just me.

user136984
There should be a "Send feedback" button under the cog in the top-right-hand corner.

user136984
If you wouldn't mind. :)

does theming not work in filezilla?

user136984
If you wouldn't, I'm sure that someone else will.

user136984
6:21 PM
In fact it probably doesn't matter too much actually.

6:33 PM
@Seth there may be root hope for your S3 xda-developers.com/…

@ParanoidPanda, Google adds and removes features like I add and remove underwear, so it wouldn't suprise me if it was there one day and gone the next...

user136984
@TheXed: Well, I hope that you at least consult someone about your underwear changes first. :P

Just my dresser drawer...

pointers are convoluted in C
that's for sure

@Serg as well as life...

6:38 PM
@Serg I concur.
Pointers in Go are much nicer.

200 \o/
@Serg pointers in C are disappointers :=)

@NathanOsman Go has pointers ? Surprised
i thought all modern languages kind of stepped away from them

Yes, but they don't work the same way as in C.
Objects have a reference count and aren't destroyed until the last pointer goes out of scope.
So pointers still point to the address of the object but are always valid.
Kinda like Python but with the explicit syntax.

7:02 PM
@Rinzwind that post could be a twitter candidate :D

One more vote and I'll add it to the queue...

feel free to come to the coyote's den
CoyoteBot and I are hanging out

What's with the wolfy/coyoty theme here ?

By the way, @KazWolfe released a beta version of WolfBot that I am trying to merge into CoyoteBot
I picked Coyote because it is similar to Wolf
awooo!
@ParanoidPanda I have gmail.
possibly off-topic, but anyone having trouble using Cloud9 with Chrome?

7:36 PM
Which part?

I can't even get to the terminal.
It's stuck at loading

Hmm... I can't check for you. Signing up requires way too many permissions from my account.

It's okay.
As a shoutout to everyone, (especially @KazWolfe), if you wish to be a contributor on the CoyoteBot project, send me an email (yisrimark@gmail.com).

user136984
@MarkYisri: It's fine, I already found someone with Gmail who was able to confirm what I was asking.

What is CoyoteBot?

7:53 PM
@TheXed is a fork of WolfBot

@MarkYisri which is?

CoyoteBot is

user136984
@MarkYisri: It's a chat bot.

user136984
I think.

7:57 PM
Yes. I'm trying to add my own features to it. Now, I am preparing to merge in the latest features from @KazWolfe so we get a preview of WolfBot

user136984
Right, then know already what it is. So why did you ask?

user136984
I am so confused...

@ParanoidPanda why did who ask? I am confused too.

user136984
@MarkYisri: You asked to who what?

user136984
Oh!

user136984
7:59 PM
I pinged you accidentally! I meant to ping @TheXed! :D

Ha ha, lots of who what where when etc.
@KazWolfe I need your help
It gives me this error:
Updated room ID 47256 to new prefs format. It is now Active.
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "WolfCore.py", line 97, in <module>
print("Joined room " + str(room.id))
AttributeError: 'unicode' object has no attribute 'id'
Aw man I really messed it up now.
All right it works now
but we are using the old version still
will have to wait for more info from @KazWolfe

8:37 PM
@MarkYisri pretty sure 'room' is a unicode string and not a dict

I see though that @KazWolfe is doing his fine over here: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/1/sandbox
and he should be using a similar codebase, he just shared it with us today

amazingly, this diagram I made 2 years ago for VM virtual networking explanation of how VBox exposes 'hardware' for networking to VMs is still usable... I'm amazed it's still fairly useful/accurate heh

@Seth yours?

I wish.
