Q: Can't boot after kernel upgrade to 3.2.0-27

IncioDevI've a new Dell Inspiron special edition with Intel® Core™ i7-3612QM and Ati Radeon HD 7730M. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 in dual boot with Windows 7. Yesterday after a kernel upgrade from 3.2.0-26 to 3.2.0-27, Ubuntu doesn't boot anymore. I see the grub and when selecting "Ubuntu with Linux 3.2.0-...

A: Can't boot after kernel upgrade to 3.2.0-27

DexI've experienced a similar problem after upgrading to 3.2.0-27 kernel. I could select which kernel to boot from in grub but can only boot completely via recovery. What I did was boot up into 3.2.0-26 recovery, removed 3.2.0-27 as well as the graphics driver. After rebooting, I picked 3.2.0-26 ge...

Hey guess what... Now i have to reinstall Ubuntu xD i think im going to go for 11.10 or 10.04 xD which one do you guys recommend

i'ld just stick with 12.04 and use the default DE or if you don't want unity go with xubuntu or kubuntu

I like xubuntu myself

7:07 PM
i like xfce as well
R-click on desktop "start" menu and open terminal here options are epic

does xubuntu offer great customization options?

if you don't mind doing the customizations yourself, then yes

egh that kinda sounds scary lol I am not very good with linux xD if that isn't apparent

yep, adding icons in the panel, making the panel's look how you want. running compositing (effects)
It was much like gnome 2

yes...it's more "linux-y" with being able to modify just about everything from a text file just my opinion

7:09 PM
oh i can deal with that xD
son of a ***** deleted my freakin boot loader for windows xD it all goes downhill from here xD

you could always just try it in a live environment just to be sure, and you can always add the other desktops once it is installed

^-- that. and you probably want the xfce4-goodies package

goodie!
@MatthewKaulfers looks like it's not your day, If you get too frustrated take a coffee break and research some options
2

well it feels more like a desktop and less like fluxbox when you add that

found an option

7:17 PM
i really think coffee in sufficient quantities could cure cancer...just saying, it fixes everything else

lol that is duct tape

duct tape and wd40. if it moves and it shouldn't (a) if it doesn't move and it should (b). problem solved

everything that duct tape doesn't fix coffee is there, wd40 was originally used on bombs (water displacement attempt 40)

that too

reinstalling windows 7 i guess... :S

7:21 PM
Would anyone have any ideas as to why password reset emails from my site end up in my spam folder?
(This is in Gmail, by the way.)
I checked the message headers in Gmail:
Received-SPF: pass (google.com: domain of do-not-reply@quickmediasolutions.com designates 50.19.248.254 as permitted sender) client-ip=50.19.248.254;

All you need to do is mark it as not spam a few times and it should stop sending it there

@MatthewKaulfers what? just do a boot repair with the install disk and install whatever linux you want after you've had some time to become not irritated

idk how to do a boot repair

well i can't use the repair option.

7:23 PM
I'll try that.

hm, no windows disk?

yes I am using a windows disc

i've never seen the option grayed out. you're having a day of weird...just back up and do a rain dance

It says something about not having the proper version. (It is the same version as was installed on this machine.)
HAHA

oh, the whole sp-version thing

7:25 PM
yeh

blah

and unfortunately in my PC's current state there isn't any way for me to get to cmd to remove the sp1 and if I did then I would have a whole boat load of registry issues to repair. xD easier to reinstall. Wasn't anything important on this machine anway
I have one lol I run a computer repair business xD

@mateo_salta there's a legal stripped down iso that only has boot repair on it
i've seen it work on mult service-packs

oh, that would be nice

too late xD for that @aking1012

no lol it was a joke look at the error code xD

you should note that i find certain language in that "error code" offensive.
be glad i havent flagged it for mod attention yet
bad things happen when i do that

I think it needs some more 000's quick!

That error code is not valid hex.

@GeorgeEdison plz do so :)

please edit it
i can't

7:33 PM
Done.

thank you
and again, be glad i'm not using modflags

0xD34DB33F would be an appropriate error code i think

then Moderator craziness would erupt into here.

No, I have much stronger passwords than that.

I will repost no more...
My passwords are longer than my username.

@GeorgeEdison even on a honeypot, you'd have a much stronger password?

I am simply trying to pass the time while I am waiting for this thing to install then I have to reinstall drivers. Then to install ubuntu I have to completely remove Nvidia graphics card <--- anyone know why I have to do this?

@LordofTime What did you say to me then remove?

7:36 PM
I'd just generate one.

It would be right for the public part of an pgp key?

on a honeypot, i'd assume you'd put intentionally unsecure pws there

I don't have any honeypots.
(There's a joke in there somewhere...)

@MatthewKaulfers some nvidia cards work fine
i've been lucky

@GeorgeEdison honeypot's an ITSec term for intentionally-insecure area for hackers to go into

7:37 PM
@ObsessiveFOSS thanks for not saying "it's 15 characters"...people don't realise that grossly reduces the brute space

@aking1012 I wonder why I have to remove it completely from my system to install Ubuntu though..

@LordofTime I know. I just don't have any.
I have enough trouble keeping everything secure.

yes. it has even been meme-ified

Can you answer this? My computer ejects the CD while loading Ubuntu for install http://askubuntu.com/questions/166399/my-computer-ejects-the-cd-while-loading-ubuntu-for-install?atw=1 #installation

7:41 PM
i don't know if you know it, but the 0xd34db33f thing is actually used by safari as an error code if you're debugging sometimes

And if you use Safari, you will be debugging.

i was working on something random, not using safari just for the record

That is why xD

@MatthewKaulfers in point of fact i think it was a stack exhaustion thing. you can't load huge XML files in most browsers...they all crash

um.. I believe I am out of the loop.. xD

7:55 PM
oh, that would be funny if it was something specific Microsoft Office did that made safari do that

heh...that would have been funny, but no

Why is there a delay until one is allowed to create a bounty?

i suppose it's to encourage only bountying worthwhile questions
you know...keep people from bountying things as a way of saying "answer me now!" instead of "someone needs to get points because this is hard" subjective opinion

anyways, If is something like that, you are just going to get mad about wasting rep when someone makes a "you can't" answer, and gets two upvotes

8:02 PM
@mateo_salta great point

@ObsessiveFOSS You may want to ask this on meta. But I think this explains the reasoning behind that Stack Exchange design decision. "Give the community a chance to answer your question normally first." Questions should start out equal. A bounty is something to use when the system doesn't work otherwise.

I get rep points if someone edit's my post?

you get 2 if you edit a post and some conditions are met, but i never got rep for being edited

Oh I see.

@JorgeCastro I accidentally made a room with the wrong site, can you please migrate it?

8:09 PM
I don't have migration powers

Does anyone?

anyone here use geany?
nvm I found what I was looking for - the documentation is horrible :)

i think you're in a room with eclipse and sumblimetext2 folks

ewww eclipse
st2 is nice
I wont pay for it: so I wont use it - i'm fair.

8:31 PM
Listening to the Guardian Legend main theme on repeat in VLC...
Maybe I'm going insane.

idk I listen to Icarus dance remix on loop sometimes

@rlemon If you need an API to play with... quickmediasolutions.com/api/docs :)

OMG about to break 50rep lol

@whoever starred that, you already knew what i was talking about or you youtube-d it?

@MatthewKaulfers I have four more to go before I do...

8:37 PM
When did you start?

@aking1012 Already knew.
@MatthewKaulfers 21 days ago.

awesome, so i'm not the only weirdo that listens to game soundtrack remixes

Wow.. @Flabricorn better up your game.. I just started yesterday xD

@MatthewKaulfers if you just want fast global rep do the SU thing. I nailed down 100-rep there in a couple hours
it's a little harder here, but nothing in comparison to something like serverfault

Global rep? Clarify Im interested @aking1012

8:39 PM
click on my icon and view my chat profile...then view my AU profile. you'll see a substantial difference. notice which one shows up in chat?
15.6k vs 8.2k
(and a couple thousand global rep is b/c i joined a bunch of sites to drop comments)

@MatthewKaulfers I never edit, only posted three questions, I don't have a lot of problems, I know how to do everything I NEED, and a lot of what I want. Now answering wise, I just don't have those problems, nor do I have an immediate solution, and my ideas I feel are better spent at work than spending my entire day answering posts that other people will in the end answer or at least bounty. I also use an entire different architecture than most, PowerPC.

@Flabricorn what about the newbies who can't bounty?

@MatthewKaulfers Other's bounty it for them.

@Flabricorn fair point...but sometimes a question prompts an app. like lenstoggle for a question here... or bumping the version on aircrack from universe to get it to a precise repo

I like answering questions to help the community. I can't figure out how to get on the development team so I help how I can xD

8:44 PM
The one's with many thousands rep, and @aking1012 See? I'm not experienced enough to answer that question, I could probably look it up on the Internet, but then I think that the people I work for would feel I'm wasting my time.

one of the things i'm goofing with now is getting a ppa up with an android-reversing-tools package that pulls in apktool, dex2jar, and jdgui
it stimulates me trying new things like smh packaging java. despite the headbangs, i think i'll be better for it

@aking1012 I feel as if you're mocking me. :) I only halfway understand what you've said, and that's why my rep doesn't help me climb the ladder of open source success.
I AM learning, however at a slower pace than some.

no...i'm certainly not mocking you.

@aking1012 One day there will be the ability to convey sarcasm over the Internet without sending mixed messages in italics.

i was shaking my head at how odd packaging java is and how it shouldn't be necessary

8:48 PM
Physically or did you simply write that you were shaking your head?

quite literally. at least a half dozen times in the last 24 hours

@aking1012 Sounds like quite the predicament.

java isn't built to be managed properly...and the java things that are like autotools or setuptools stray even further.

@aking1012 Have you tried restarting it? (Jokingly)

think of the ruby railscast with "gather up all your jars" and the fact that you're supposed to dump jars wherever they're needed with java. now look at repositories. you're supposed to do source only builds and manage file dependencies so things get added and removed properly. they're opposite ways to manage things. trying to make them agree can be difficult

8:53 PM
That's ridiculousness.

i'm not sure to take that as agreement or disagreement

Agreement.

I already figured out a couple ways to slip compiled binaries past debuild, but I shouldn't have to. Anyway, you see my point. It's an internal conflict. Do I make things easy to install? Or do I help impose limitations on users for ideological/stability reasons?

This is a bug and should probably be closed as off-topic:

Q: MAME crashes on a fresh new installed Ubuntu 12.04 with illegal instruction core dumped

nikeI have just installed Ubuntu 12.04, along with the updates, and then installed Mame via apt-get. The installation went fine, but now when I run it I get "Illegal Instruction - Core Dumped". Any ideas?

There should be a tree-view for AU as a wiki-ish thing. Think distribution, application, issue/configuration/installation, tree-items. It would be way easier to navigate

9:03 PM
boo navigation
search ftw.

i take your point, but it would be relatively easy to set up with tags if we had really descriptive tags
example: treeview -> 12.04 -> issue -> MAME -> bug closure wow that was easy. both have strengths and weaknesses though

I have almost 400 KB of code powering my website.

@JorgeCastro just a note. i prefer to DO it your way, but i think it would help people seeking information the other (possibly people that aren't very good at searches or google-fu)

make an index page I guess
but those always end up unmaintained

Q: Tips and Tricks for Unity

VishWe have the new Unity shell in Ubuntu, what are the fun new stuff we need to know or look forward to?

as an example

good point. that's not magic tag maintenance though
for it to work, every indexed question would have to have either an issue/configuration/index tag, a distribution or universal tag, and an application tag. it would be a lot like a tree-view for launchpad bug-trackers i guess. anyway. lots of ideas on how things could work.

Q: "Avconv" tag does not exist!

Chirag VoraI just asked a question related to "avconv" and I was surprised that the tag for it did not exist. I do not have enough reputation to create a tag. I posted the question with "ffmpeg" tag instead. Would request anyone who is reading this to create a tag : avconv. You may even consider to make ff...

@AskUbuntuMeta you're late. also @Bruno is fast

Q: Can not install Synaptic Package Manager in 12.04: Package dependencies cannot be resolved

Al HughesThe following are the details when I try to install Synaptic Package Manager. The following packages have unmet dependencies: synaptic: Depends: libc6 (>= 2.4) but 2.15-0ubuntu10 is to be installed Depends: libept1.4.12 but it is not going to be installed Depends: libgcc1...

@MatthewKaulfers i would consider that a survival trait

lol what do you mean?

9:40 PM
some really smart people are displeased with nvidia and they recently lost a MONSTROUS contract to AMD/ATI

searches for reference, but it's true for sure

Either way if i plan on continuing to use ubuntu i am going to have to get rid of the nvidia

anyone want to put up a bounty? I am maxed out

Q: Add custom command in the open with dialog?

tapanIn earlier versions of Ubuntu (10.10-) there was an option in the "open with" tab in the properties window, to add a custom command to open a file. However, this is no longer the case in Ubuntu 11.10. Is there any way that I can add these file type associations with a command of my choice rather ...

9:44 PM
@JorgeCastro what number are you looking for?

shrug, I dunno, 50? oh wait.
let's wait for the merge first
I did it backwards the other time and screwed it up

I can't afford it lol xD
I just hit 58rep xD that would leave me with 8 :(

I don't think it'll let you bounty until 75 or something isn't it?

ok just give me the parameters you want when you need it, but i'll be incommunicado for a couple days starting tomorrow morning

yeh that too

9:46 PM
i only get 50 and 100 and up

/me waits for a merge

ping me with the reason and the bounty and i'll do it

What does rollback do?

@Mitch revert an edit
say someone changed something in your question that modified its effectiveness or meaning. rollback
@Jacob long time no see

9:54 PM
But what does it means resetting any offensive votes?

if someone edited in profanity

@JorgeCastro what merge is needed?

@aking1012 Thanks.

it's in the queue
the one with the nautilus mimetype how to open
etc

@JorgeCastro what bounty is it needed, attention?

9:57 PM
yeah, one sec
something like "don't forget the screenshots!" would be nice
then we'd be woo!

Aha i know why I was having so many issues with ubuntu now. It was because I used the wubi installer and it wouldn't work with graphics card in and then i went ahead and removed it from the PC and installed. Now this time I used a USB stick and didn't use the wubi did a clean install and now the installation looks waaay different. Cool beans xD

@JorgeCastro done:done

wubi, grrrr....
<3 thanks bruno!

yeh don't recommend it lol

@JorgeCastro so rep = 50 or 100 and reason code = current outdated?

10:02 PM
bruno already got it
he is fast
like the wind

okay i thought you wanted me to bounty it after the merge. i'm not complaining though.

isn't that one on the same content as this one: askubuntu.com/questions/72535/… ?
@JorgeCastro want to get 50 rep back from me?

Q: Is there such a thing as a Ubuntu Certified Engineer?

Bruno PereiraI am looking for certification on Ubuntu server technology or possibly Debian (as long as its supplied by Canonical, is that even possible?) which Ubuntu is based on. Is there such a thing provided by Canonical? In what regions are these services available? Can someone get Ubuntu training and ce...

yeah I have no clue on that one

force someone who does!

I didn't even know we did that

10:10 PM
@BrunoPereira there was a recent link/question on that one, but it linked to a wiki page that noted the information was out-dated and black-holed to a general page
link:

I R IS LOVE UBUNTU on my cv without certification is worth noting :(

to me that says take the LPI exam

I can certify you, granted no one will recognize the certification, so certifications are only as good as the company that offer them, and If the company you work for wants the certification. certification.comptia.org/getCertified/certifications/…

the wiki-page notes it was modeled after that and now "up to date" directs you to purchase support
@mateo_salta LPI has tiered certifications if you go directly to them afaik
i think the issue is that L+ and tier 1 aren't even at the RHCT level

@mateo_salta well, I am fishing at the moment for a new work environment and I can tell that most companies will be looking for a RHCE as a pre for working with RH / Centos, I know that certification is only worth something to those who seek it (your right on that one), but why the heck not?

10:16 PM
it's a solid exam. i sat a RH hands on a long time ago

It would be cool, and one more thing to make the resume look good "Certified Ubuntu Professional" sure sounds nice

@mateo_salta yeah, I am sure that what you said is true, I have found only a few companies that ask for "debian" experience, but to proof that you are at least familiar with different distros and are able to work alone, via a certificate, would be nice ;)

I think that thing is just another level on top of LPI (the certification thing)

like a "working with graphical shells" type of thing... (pure speculation)

LPI not available in the netherlands :( do they have online activities and courses?

10:19 PM
afaik LPI tried to focus on agnostic stuff and it led to a bunch of crap questions...maximum ram for x86 with and without PAE, maximum number of processors and the like

at least at level 1
it was just my impression

ffs, methinksthatisridiculous!

just like the windows certification, How man usb devices can you "theoretically" attach to one port

lol
oh well, everyone needs a start somewhere

10:22 PM
here's installation media and an internet connection. in 4 hours we need a mail server with 10 email addresses, 3 booting workstations where you can't change system settings, and nfs shared home. good-luck
my idea of an entry level certification

What's an installation media?

CD/DVD, unless you were being facetious
tier 2 could have kickstart/ltsp
@Bruno you have what i think is an accurate answer. might not be what you want to hear, but as far as i know it's accurate

okay. want me to delete it? i'm not sure you're finding a canonical sponsored certification

@aking1012 oh, w8, did not read

10:36 PM
I hereby certify you, by my own power, as a Ubuntu Magician, ($50 for certificate by mail)

@aking1012 oh, well, its sort of the same. If there is no better then there is none :/
@mateo_salta lol

aw, wait, I don't think I can use the trade mark

@mateo_salta I'm happy if you use Ubunto and Canonicale :P

all I can do is call you a Magician, good luck at the children parties.
well later

I always found the similarity between Ubuntero and Palero quite amusing. I'm no linguist though.
suppose ero denotes advanced practitioner of in the male form

10:43 PM
yus, it is used by most professions (in some sort) in spanish and portuguese adding meaning that the person exercising that profession has some knowledge of what he is actually doing (not an amateur). era will be the feminine form.

Hey @BrunoPereira
can you update the maintainer field in the teamspeak charm?

Does anyone know why I can't get the easy partition utility when I am trying to install Ubuntu?

@JorgeCastro arrrrrgh, so much to do, not enough time...
@JorgeCastro If I want to maintain it, what needs to be done? fork the current code?

the testing is done automatically
you just need to add a maintainer field
but it works fine in precise, etc.

@JorgeCastro Sometimes you talk to me as if I knew what I was doing here... Goes an look for a way to add an maintainer field...

oh
one sec

11:05 PM
i only know how to do it on source/deb-src. no idea about "official packages".

@BrunoPereira in environments.yaml in the charm ... (finding example)

@BrunoPereira: Are you around?
Oh slaps forehead.

I think I'm in here to ask the very thing Jorge is talking to you about.
(Being a charm maintainer.)

see maintainer: you@you.com
that's all that is
also in case you didn't see, we have 90 charms!
10 short of the magic 100!

11:11 PM
kk, need to setup a working environment again and I will be doing it, so add 1 to those 90

it's in there already
unless you want to finish off the folding one for 91. :)

I do!
(just remove all the futile crap from my life atm :( )
@JorgeCastro to make my branch up to date with the code there is in the charms branch I have to propose a merge from mine in to the charms one?
or the opposite?

yeah
I have the steps right here:

@JorgeCastro <3

lmk if that's easy enough, if it's sucky I can fix it

11:28 PM
@Jorge you said you might be able to fix things on that page:
typo:
