12:10 AM
Morning

12:45 AM
@msPeachy @aking1012 I eat more than once a day, but I can never keep weight. Swimming is kind of a gateway to myself staying skinny.

@msPeachy oh i don't get weak or pass out or anything...then i'm not horribly active either
@Flabricorn with a name like flab-ricorn i'm a little surprised to hear that

Of all the... Gedit doesn't even do syntax highlighting for x86 assembly.

Flabricorn is a username I've used since I read the "Ask A ninja: Ninja Handbook"
The page reads with an image of a morbidly obese unicorn, "A flabricorn basks in the sun daydreaming of fried sticks of butter", or something along those lines.

@GeorgeEdison and that surprises you?

It's not like x86 assembly is uncommon.

12:50 AM
fair point

Got a free MacBook yesterday. As soon as I have a MiniDVI to VGA I'll add another Ubuntu computer to my workstation.

@Flabricorn I have one I don't need if you're going to be at defcon if you mean mini-displayport (which i think you do if it's a mac)

@Flabricorn What did you have to do to get it free?

@GeorgeEdison yeah, i was looking at tutorials on adding gedit plugins...somebody even tried to turn it in to a full-on ide once
afk for an hour or so...

12:57 AM
@GeorgeEdison Well the Screen is totaled, and I'm currently in a relationship with the person who gave it to me, and @aking1012 I'm not actually, in fact I will be away from my home for about a month as we near the end of the summer, so I'm going to be renting an apartment in Montreal Canada, within the French Quarter. A true SAFA (Super Awesome Fun Adventure)

Canada is awesome (and I'm not just saying that 'cuz I live there).

@GeorgeEdison Well, I'll enjoy all I can being that cheezy tourist that photographs everything and while I'm away I can't fit any of my computer stuff into the car, (Driving up, living in Ohio, so not too far away... 2, 3 days at MOST.) because I only seem to own towers, and I'm just to lazy to really bring a G5 all the way up, IF I could fit it. So, Ubuntu-less for a month.

You can install Ubuntu on a Mac :P

1:14 AM
Screen Totaled, no MiniDisplayPort to VGA and no room for monitor either. :(

1:27 AM
I'll see what I can do though.

1:45 AM
@aking1012 someone should feed you often
:P

2:02 AM
@Takkat Regarding your bounty here for an alternative to ppa-purge while bug 831768 prevents aptitude from resolving multarch package conflicts: Is there any reason ppa-purge -i ... won't work (the -i flag makes ppa-purge try to use apt-get instead of aptitude)?

How to know which network is connected? http://askubuntu.com/questions/166902/how-to-know-which-network-is-connected?atw=1 #wireless

2:19 AM
@msPeachy :p

2:34 AM
This is a Windows or BIOS/hardware problem that's not really related to Ubuntu, so I think we should close this as off-topic:

Q: I want to remove Ubuntu 12.04 and want to install Windows XP on my laptop...but there's a problem

A SharmaI want to remove Ubuntu 12.04 and want to install Windows XP on my laptop; the problem is that whenever I try to install my Windows XP from my CD the setup says: Setup did not find any hard disks drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly con...

@EliahKagan agreed added another possibility in the comment

HI

long time no read

@aking1012 Do you mean XP may not support SATA (without added drivers), or that it might not support the particular SATA controller in the OP's machine (without added drivers)?

2:47 AM
@EliahKagan i should have been more specific...but i take your point

sudo help me

@aking1012 I'm not sure it's too important--the OP will likely take your meaning, and if it gets worked on elsewhere, the details can be fleshed out. But if you think it should be more specific, you could always replace your comment with a new one.

i just added a tiny new comment
@tachyons does the file exist and the software is just being silly? did you check?

I checked , file does not exist

2:52 AM
I saw that

evidently they know it's missing a ton of models and don't particularly care...if you want to start a ppa for holding these things i'll google look around for it a bit

they included less than 10 m0dels out of 2053 models :O

i'ld ask on a relevant usenet group...someone that has loads of them will probably crop up

is it legal to add them to ppa ?

idk are they patent encumbered? there are more models in the rpm on rpmbone
nm, i thought there were but it may only be +1

it's not the 7400b it's the 7400, but it's in the beige bag trial and requires extraction if i'm reading it right

7400b means second set of pins pin ic 7400

okay idk...i haven't done anything with that. but there's the link

It is a windows executable file :(

yes. it's windows software you have to extract the model from

their model copy protection IS ... microsoft access database
womp womp womp

I won't download 60mb file just to get 100 kb file :(

if you ask on meta if it's okay to post links to models extracted from free trials and community consensus is yes, i may do it

you mean meta askubuntu ?

yep
it's a gray area...so i'ld rather know the consensus

3:16 AM
can you write a meta post for me , my english is too bad :(

o/
@aking must now be calculating the probability that this is a hibi session. :P
@tachyons whats wrong?

in fact i was

Does anyone know if 1ah in x86 assembly is equal to 0x1a?

he wants a model. the only place we've found it is in a free trial of some windows software. posting links to models extracted from free trials, good or bad? -- ask meta -- write the question for me please

there...you're up to speed

Is it basically another way of specifying the same thing?
(I've almost finished writing a bootloader that prints a message on the screen.)

3:22 AM
iirc it may be. you could just assemble both then objdump them and compare

@aking1012 umm.. I have a class in few minutes, so I'm running away.
Windows, and trail versionsof software.. and whatever.. anything not opensource is evil!!
Flash is evil... and.. and... everything is evil

@aking1012 Good idea.

ok, not everything, umm.. time to close my eyes and count numbers....

SO says 1ah == 0x1a

Ah great, thanks.
I prefer the latter - it looks "cleaner".

3:26 AM
me too

I've got a binary image. Time to fire up VirtualBox and see if it works.

X fingers crossed doing the widdershins dance

Lol...

stolen directly from a Linus rant btw

BBL

3:29 AM
I guess I need to create a floppy image with dd...

may be the case...did you just dd it to the fake sda ?

I really don't know what I'm doing :)

heh. there was an interesting course online somewhere on writing a bootloader - video thing - if you want me to look for it

I need to figure out how to get my raw binary image into a floppy image. You would think that would be easy :P
Hey - I figured it out.
dd bs=512 count=2879 if=/dev/zero of=padding
cat bootloader.bin padding >floppy.img

\o/

3:39 AM
Something is wrong with the code.

it was supposed to print what?

@aking1012 A small message (but the message did end with the letter 'n', so...).
^---- Compiz just crashed and this came up.
???

wait what? my compiz crashed, but i think i have apport set to "stop bothering me i know my video driver is a blob"

What's this about Precise not being under development?
And it says "filing a bug here". Filing a bug where?

3:43 AM
launchpad integration for apport i guess

Q: Backup an OEM Windows installation disk

Peter JankuliakI would like to buy a new laptop in the near future on which I would like to install Ubuntu. The sad truth is that most of the laptops - including the one I'm looking at - come with an installer of Microsoft Windows for which I'll have payed. There is an option to try and ask for a refund as exp...

^^ He will install Ubuntu in near future
So, answer me

selling your OEM copy? where are you going to sell it and to whom? just eat the windows tax

Awwww yeah!

cool beans. was your offset to start of string wrong or something?

And How many dupe we have for this question askubuntu.com/q/166918/61218

3:55 AM
@aking1012 I was using the wrong BIOS interrupt 10 function.

Turns on Ruroni Kenshin ovas to understand how awesome @George feels

All it does at the moment is display the message and halt the CPU.

well it's a start
oddity, did you know @ plus a letter and an asterisk is interpreted by autocomplete as matching everyone?

No, I didn't.

4:01 AM
@GeorgeEdison I'll give you my own bootloader

It isn't really a bootloader yet since it doesn't boot anything :)

We created (I actually) a simple bootloader which loads another simple Os

askubuntu.com/questions/154460/…. This question is closed , but the duplicate link is not answer my question. The answer from @izx already hidden that's the best answer for me. Now, I can't see the answer.

yep, which approach are you thinking about taking? limiting the size of your kernel to tiny or getting outside of that limitation?

this and this is created by same OP as dupe. 2nd one get closed as the dupe of 1st one. I think those should be merged or reversed

4:16 AM
@klox @izx Maybe you could re-post your deleted answer in the master question.
@AnwarShah I'd go with merging. There's an accepted answer on the other one too.

@EliahKagan He accepts all answers may be!
there is a comment from fossfreedom also for this

@AnwarShah Yes, I don't think that user know/knew how to use the site properly. On yet another duplicate, I commented with some tips.

And when he finishes writing his OS RSS bootloader/kernel, he'll feel like this:

@EliahKagan thanks, I think that will be enough for his education :P
nice work

@EliahKagan good job with the comment

4:23 AM
@EliahKagan I saw, my answer also didn't help him much.

@msPeachy Thx.

He commented a method which works

@AnwarShah Well, a merge may still be a good idea so people can better know what's going on.

I feel, I need to edit the answer to include that
sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/libgtk-3-0_3.4.2-0ubuntu0.4_i386.deb
^^ that worked for him

is it okay to ask hardware related problems?

4:27 AM
I think, yes
But in that case, A detailed information is almost always necessary

depends i think...they have to find a way to tie it to ubuntu. like my bios boots some exotic os fine, but it won't boot ubuntu. some thread [link] indicates that if i flash the bios with this image from the manufacturer it will work. what steps can i take to do this?

or i'm having weird issues under heavy memory utilization, how can i check my ram and hd for faults

@AnwarShah I commented asking him to post an answer with the method he found that works. He probably will. If not, we can post a community-wiki answer and get 2 upvotes for it so the question no longer appears unanswered.

I edited that already!

CWs need two? or all answers need 2?

@AnwarShah Oh I'll just remove my comment then.

4:29 AM
I actually want a suggestion
What will be better?
You can check my edit

@msPeachy I think if you're trying to use Ubuntu to figure out a hardware problem, it's on topic. I do agree it has to have something to do with Ubuntu, but Ubuntu doesn't have to be what's causing the problem. For example, I think this question of mine is on-topic.

I agreed with you !

@aking1012 To appear answered, a question has to have at least one answer that is accepted or has 2 or more upvotes (or both).
@AnwarShah Sorry, I pinged you instead of @msPeachy by accident. I edited my chat message to correct it. If we're talking about the same message. Maybe we're not...

@aking1012 My monitor froze - i saw something on the screen lines and colors then it froze, mouse and keyboard does not respond, restart button did nothing either, now the computer just powers on, the fan is on, but nothing else.

@msPeachy was it under processing load? sounds like heat or power issue to me

4:33 AM
I was watching a movie with totem, then it just froze but the audio was on, keeps on a loop, when I pressed the restart button, it restarted but nothing boots, the power indicator of the monitor turns to orange

@AnwarShah Looks good to me. You may want to also mention that the OP then used Synaptic to remove broken packages.

@EliahKagan thanks for the suggestion

@msPeachy laptop or desktop?

desktop

@EliahKagan did you mean I must repost same question ?? how if my question was closed again (it's make duplicate)?

4:35 AM
@msPeachy unplug it and do like you're trying to boot it a couple times, then plug it back in and boot. see if that doesn't fix it at least temporarily

@klox Sorry for the confusion. No, you should not repost the same question. I was suggesting @izx repost his deleted answer in the question yours was closed as a duplicate of.

@aking1012 I've opened the case and saw that only the fan is on, i've tried to let it rest for the day, but the next day same issue, it powers on but nothing boots. I've restarted it several times already.

yeah, but did you do it with it unplugged? and do you see any bulging capacitors? the little cylinder things, are any of them ballooned out

yes i did, i always unplug after i power down my computer. didn't notice any bulging capacitors, could it be the cmos?

Bounty offered: How do I open .jar files without using terminal in manually installed java? http://askubuntu.com/questions/159612/how-do-i-open-jar-files-without-using-terminal-in-manually-installed-java?atw=1 #nautilus

4:40 AM
i would suspect not. it should just give you some message about applying defaults or pressing f1 to enter bios in that case. you're down to probably power supply

guess so, since nothing appears on the monitor

last ditch is try reseating everything then swapping out the power supply (with a friend's) to test

i've read somewhere on the net about re-inserting the cmos
haven't tried it yet

welcome to try it. it's really unlikely, but you could try it
it certainly won't HURT anything to try it

god reseating everything? i'm not that good with hardware
will try that later when i get home, but it will not mess up anything?

4:44 AM
well if something wiggled loose it can fix it, just hold on to the metal part of the case right before you touch ram/memory parts (poor-boy's ESD wrist-strap)
if you're not relatively comfortable doing it, don't do it. you can break some of the plastic parts...

A quick answer needed. How to go to broken package state?

oh i see...gotta call a technician then\

really thinking it's probably power supply though. sometimes you can smell electrical burn if it's fried

I fried a hard disk!

@AnwarShah use the -f option with a package from Q then try and update

4:47 AM
After foolishly unpacking the power supply Box
Don't ever do that!

you opened one? you can kill yourself doing that

I unplugged power sources first

@aking1012 is it that dangerous?

those are some big temporary power stores though. same with old CRTs

Yes, opened one, cleaned, repacked, reassemble the pc, plug power source, start computer, and....
smelt electrical burn
from Hard disk
It was at least 3 years ago

4:50 AM
if you don't know which parts to stay away from yes...it can be bad for you. it'ld be like saying guns/knives are or aren't dangerous. if you know to stay away from the pointy end it's not as dangerous

Yes,
I didn't know, unpacking power supply box is too bad
But i think, all other parts are easy to handle
sometimes reassembling RAM fixes big hardware problems

yes. you usually get beep-codes or led indicators for that though

After that accident, I became little non-technical about hardware
I fear doing Hardware now ;P

by comparison hardware is much easier than software (as long as you're not going any further than swapping out parts)

hmm. but only swapping, building a hardware is still as hard as building software (IMHO)

4:57 AM
well yes...but i know people that are great on a soldering iron that can't boot from CD
it's just a completely different discipline

Oh, in earlier days at chat, I thought IMHO is an international Organization !
6

Well... we're getting there.

gj

what is imho then?

it ends in opinion

4:58 AM
@msPeachy IMHO is In my humble opinion, IMHO

@GeorgeEdison sorry one custom boot-loader star per day sir

@msPeachy You also thought like that?

yeah lol

@aking1012 Lol.

bootloader that plays ascii packman would be made of unicorns
ascii pong might be an interesting exercise anyway...
minimum score of X to select your kernel type of thing. GAH Y does it take ten minutes to boot!!!

5:15 AM
@GeorgeEdison just out of curiosity what assembler are you using? nasm? masm? (prefers nasm and Intel over masm and AT&T)

nasm.
I prefer Intel over AT&T as well.

from a logical perspective AT&T makes marginally more sense, but it's SOOOO ugly

It's ugly. For sure.

and this is why i should only have one coffeecup. i just refilled an empty one only to notice a full one on the other side of the workspace when i sat back down smh at myself

hah
How many cups do you need in a single day?

5:26 AM
of coffee? i've never really counted, but i think i brew about 3 pots
(8 "cup" pot that's more like 3.5 human cups)

In litre?

no idea...i'm an ugly american that could eyeball it in gallons
gallon and a quarter maybe...
well the rest of the world is on the more logical metric system...i just grew up that way

Q: How Do I get back the Login Sound? (Playing in Guest Account Though!)

ARUNMy Ubuntu 11.10 was having login Sound after I installed it. But, after few days, the sound is not playing! However, the sound is heard when logged on using Guest account, the sound is being played! I could not hear the sound on Administrator Account.

@EliahKagan thanks for editing that answer. I was feeling lazy and also had a hurry to put the link of that question to another answer :)
I voted that already
@aking1012 I just used gallon on google and get amazed with the result !

yeah probably an autoconversion if you search with a number attached

5:35 AM
5.67812
try it

yeah, i saw

there was also input box

i know. i've seen it before.

Yay - I successfully instructed the BIOS to read a sector from the disk that's going to contain the kernel image.

@AnwarShah i don't like using it though. makes me feel lazy. if i had to do the conversion more often i might remember it instead of typing it in the magic answer box

5:36 AM
(P.S. This is fun.)

@GeorgeEdison \o/

\o/

@GeorgeEdison can you give the code to load the kernel image?

i really should start playing with some embedded micro-controllers or something

@AnwarShah In a moment.
The good stuff happens on line 28.
Note that I'm reading the second sector (sector 2) because the first sector is the bootloader itself.

5:39 AM
thanks
yes

I am so screwed.

Today was my first class of DSp course

digital signal processing or something else?

@jokerdino o/

@jokerdino that's kind of funny

5:41 AM
@aking1012 yup, Digital signal processing..

you don't know how much i get annoyed when people tweet nonsense.

@jokerdino just unfollow them

have you seen how many tweets i have? i'm quite sure i do

umm.. is context bot for real?

@AnwarShah it isn't that easy. they are like my RL buddies.

5:42 AM
@Mahesh We have DIP

@Mahesh no it replies with search terms from the previous 1-4 AM window instead

@jokerdino then re-tweet them all you get

bah

to every one

@aking1012 I didn't get you.. where can I see it in action?

5:45 AM
It was a joke

it was a joke's joke.

1-4 AM search terms are most likely to be the most embarrassing
I wonder if a certain number of removed posts in sequence raises a "look at these deleted messages" flag for a mod...
if only i had thought to make another account by the name of contextbot

xD

Can we close this as a dupe to my first answer? askubuntu.com/q/166915/61218

@AnwarShah Close-voted.

Thanks.

I think one of these should be duped to the other, but I'm not sure which is a better master question. After duping they should be merged. I can't really see how they're substantively different.

Q: MySQL GUI Tools

richzillaDoes anyone have any good ideas as to native MySQL GUI clients for Ubuntu? I guess, you have some super script installed in your pc to notice you whenever a "dupe" word is messaged. ;P

I guess I'll just close-vote the newer one as a dupe of the older one.

I am reading those
wait a bit.. if you want my opinion

Sorry, already close-voted (this one).

6:10 AM
when doing/proposing a merge of two questions like that i tend to vote in the direction towards the higher point value if they're substantially different so if someone has a search term and sorts by votes it's easier to find was already true in this case
2

very good point

@aking1012 In this case, the one I selected as the dupe target (master) both had more votes and was older.

highest voted or highest views?

@EliahKagan i think age and votes typically correlate on non-poor questions
@AnwarShah votes. views will still get nudged in the right direction
they're finding that one already anyway...why not rank another one well?

@EliahKagan this may well be - haven't tried it out (for obvious reasons) ;)
Hi all

6:13 AM
o/
@AnwarShah the thinking there is if a lower point question has more views, it's more found...not necessarily more helpful. the closed banner will get them to a possibly more helpful question

@Takkat Sorry if I'm missing the obvious ...why can't ppa-purge -i ... be tried?

he would be throwing the points away. someone ought to have them

Because in case it does not work it may make a mess? Well, I may try it in a VM later on (here at work its Windows all over the places)

@EliahKagan you proposed the idea...i propose you get the bounty points :)

@aking1012 I'm talking about testing it to see if it works, not who would post it.

6:20 AM
oh... yeah there is that.

@EliahKagan: it does not say anything on opiton -i in the manpage - so its worth a separate answer on ppa-purge options

@Takkat Ah, I understand. I thought you meant that it would be difficult to test effectively. I didn't post it, because I haven't tested it myself. I'll try to do that ...but it will probably be tomorrow. If someone does the work of testing it and posts about it first, I would not have a problem with that.

Come on, @EliahKagan post it, we'll test it and in case it works your get +100. What ppa-purge version is in the repos? We mqay have to download a newer one for option -i...

@Takkat You're right--the manpage doesn't list it. If you run ppa-purge with no arguments, you get much more info than is in the manpage. A bug should be filed about that if one hasn't already. I'll try to look into that (and file the bug if appropriate) tomorrow too.
@Takkat OK sounds good I'll post it now, I'll just make clear I haven't tested it yet.
@Takkat I'm using the version from the repos, and this is on an Oneiric system. Let me check on Precise.

\o/ good idea! You may add what ppa-purge says in addition to the manpage, that'd be useful

6:24 AM
@Takkat Yes, I'll do that.

dishes...somebody needs something put a ping on it so i can find it

i don't know. it was meant to be understood as "I voted too!"

@EliahKagan cool!!! looks great

Most people do not realize that the English language roots are really Danish or Jutland. Huh!?

There is an option in synaptic to see all packages from a certain repository.
Can that be used to remove them all?

izx
@AnwarShah What's the context?

7:13 AM
Removing all packages from a repository

izx
You can certainly give apt-get all the packages from a repo to remove, it will only remove the ones that are actually installed

@izx because abbreviation of thanks all was too easy

Using caps for abbreviations is oh-so-quaint :/
