@msPeachy Yes. That's just my slightly modified version of the pro-forma comment written by others. I do recommend using the version with text linkified, though. (Of either mine or the default one or your own or whatever you use.)

@jokerdino good night

@EliahKagan thank you

good night @jokerdino

4:04 PM
@EliahKagan FYI @JorgeCastro has flagged to open this again with an answer pending.

Hello all

hi @AmithKK

Hello @msPeachy
@jokerdino Good Night

@fossfreedom Cool. I did not think a concrete answer would be possible (or I would not have close-voted the original question as not-constructive).

We seem to be getting a lot of Ubuntu on a embedded system type questions lately.

Q: How resilient is Ubuntu to uncontrolled shutdowns?

mathematician1975My company is considering the use of Ubuntu as an OS for use on a hardware device. It would be installed on compact flash drive - apparently this is not standard flash drive but a specific type of memory that is supposed to "cope" with immediate power shutdown (I am not sure how this is achie...

@EliahKagan how do i install that proforma script, when I clicked on the install button my browser just opened a file like this

jrg
Chrome or firefox?

@msPeachy Chrome or firefox?
@msPeachy Install Greasemonkey

jrg
4:11 PM
Install greasemonkey.

@jrg and @AmithKK thank you
It says: "After you install pro-forma comments, you can click "remote" and then paste this in:" where is that "remote" button?

jrg
Go to a question, prepare to leave a comment.
there will be a button that says "auto" next to it
click it, and then there will be a button available that says "remote"

BEHOLD! THE ABSOLUTE POWER OF ICED COFFEE!

@jrg got it, thank you again

@LordofTime absolute power corrupts, absolutely.

4:20 PM
@jrg maybe that's why coffee makes me evil-ish in insane quantities xD

Heh... silly people drinking coffee. We all know it's iced tea that really makes the difference.

With jom, compilation is fast in MSVC++ 2010.
It runs circles around g++.
(I bet my SSD doesn't hurt things either.)

hello all

@GevorgHindoyan Hi.

did anyone hear about web socket?

in terms of...? in what context, @GevorgHindoyan?

@LordofTime html5, js

@GeorgeEdison anything you want me to do for the bugs in stackapplet's ubuntu package? this

hello @user1330492
@LordofTime no i love xml

4:48 PM
@user1330492 i dont think you have enough rep to chat. you'll need at least 20 reputation to chat, i think.

@user1330492 how you came to chat with 1 rep?

@GevorgHindoyan you can come and watch
but cant actually chat
(the chat box doesnt show up unless you have 20 rep)

aaaaaah
you mean it is hidden
or there is no box
if its hidden we can make it visible
if no then no
@LordofTime

you can't make it visible
unless you have 20 rep
so you need to have 20 rep to chat here
or anywhere on StackExchange
so he'd need to ask questions or post answers and get upvotes to get the 20 rep

@LordofTime please one time, i understand from one time
boooooooooooing :O :-|
@LordofTime or answers :D

4:55 PM
Can one vote on locked questions?

@ObsessiveFOSS no

or it is closed questions???

OK. I must leave. Goodbye.

Q: Automatically sleep and wake-up at specific times

drnessieHow can I hibernate or sleep my Ubuntu 10.10 desktop and have it "wake up" the next day? I have seen software that can do this on windows, so it can't be hard on Ubuntu!

@GevorgHindoyan i cannot unlock someone's rep. nor can any moderator.
i'm out of votes today so...
also busy with something

@LordofTime need help???

I normally use subway, but... yeah.

@jrg apparently people are noticing that i'm starting to track ubuntu packages as bugcontrol... now i'm stuck with twenty emails asking "Can you check this bug?" or "Can you check this bug?" or ...

markdown diff link
fixed capitalization in excerpt; in full tag wiki, info strongly resembles top of ADSL wikipedia article (though is probably not copied from it), so added attribution, expanded and changed wording, and also added suggestion about when this tag is appropriate to use (since we already had a dsl tag)
O_O
@EliahKagan edit reasons don't need novels :D
(you're a funny dude)

jrg
YES THEY DO

5:28 PM
Lol!

jrg
JUST LOOK AT MY EDITS. I'M VERY MUCH THE NOVELIST WHEN IT COMES TO EDIT SUMMARIES.
sarcasm

I usually make my tag wiki edit summaries bigger than usual summaries, since tag wiki edits should possibly have stronger justifications than most other edits. Also, if I do a tiny edit in the excerpt and a big one in the full tag wiki, and they end up getting reviewed by different users, I want it to make sense. (The same edit summary is given for both, if they're submitted together.)

Fixed capitalization. Capitalization is necessary when writing a concise question, especially when the question will be viewed by multiple readers, on an open forum such as this. It would be preferred that one use proper grammar and punctuation, so as to make it easier for readers of all jurisdictions to be able to easily read and understand what is being asked in the question, in question, no pun intended.
Pun would have been intended had this been a jovial statement, but this was not a jovial statement, therefore...

@RolandTaylor Nice. :-)

:D
My point is, we tend to look at the actual edit. The summary should be simple, but concise, of course.
Something as simple as: "I fixed the capitalization and spelling of the word "Ubuntu"." is enough in most cases.

5:33 PM
@RolandTaylor Finally got my Windows SDK installation fixed.

Usually when I fix capitalization I say "capitalization" or "fixed capitalization" or "improved capitalization." I do occasionally say something longer if the author has a habit of capitalizing every noun in every sentence in every question, or using capitalization for emphasis.

Now I am compiling Qt.

For each edit, there should be a separate reason (Even with tags).
@GeorgeEdison awesome!
Did you get the console back?

Yup.
I uninstalled the entire SDK and the MSVC++ runtime and then it worked (after re-installing it of course).

@RolandTaylor I will endeavor to be less verbose in my tag wiki edit summaries. (In particular, less verbose than in my summary when I proposed an edit for ). ;-)

5:33 PM
@EliahKagan LOL
@GeorgeEdison these use MSI installers?

@RolandTaylor Oh actually I haven't submitted that yet. I'll make its summary non-verbose.

@EliahKagan Congratulations, I officially can't understand what you're saying.
@RolandTaylor Yes.
Speaking of MSI... NitroShare should offer MSI installers.

Indeed
Also, Microsoft should make MSI work more like Linux package managers do ;)
It can get confused way to easily in my experience.
Brb - my stomach is having a conversation with me and it doesn't sound too happy.

@RolandTaylor In theory, it's a very robust format.
If any step of the installation fails, it can rollback the installation perfectly to the previous state.
(Now whether this actually happens in practice is another story.)

@RolandTaylor Should I submit excerpt and full tag wiki edits (on the same tag) separately, so they can have different edit reasons? I've been doing them together when editing both, but perhaps this is wrong.

5:53 PM
@EliahKagan It's not a matter of right and wrong really, just best practices so to speak.
There's no written rule or anything, so I won't tell you "this is how to do it", just "it's better to do this or that".
brb again

umm.. can I make my lens search mails in thunderbird?

jrg
@EliahKagan either works.

@GeorgeEdison bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/stackapplet/+bug/643385 <-- we closed this bug, its a Maverick bug on stackapplet.
(old bugs are old)

Ah, okay.

we meaning bugsquad and bugcontrol
normally if we see maverick stuff it gets "Invalid"

6:04 PM
@EliahKagan at the end of the day,
what matters most, is that you like pie.

but we comment making a note they're free to reopen it if it shows up i na later release

In the words of President Obama,
"I like pie. You like pie too?"

I do like pie!
3

Man, that just brings tears to my eyes...
I'm so happy right now :'D

Now I must simply avoid doing anything before the end of the day, that would diminish my love for pie.

6:05 PM
Give me a hug!

@EliahKagan free donuts?

@EliahKagan words to live by!

@LordofTime Free donuts would not reduce my like for pie, but if I eat enough of them, it might lessen my ability to act on it.

@EliahKagan there's free donuts here, there's six boxes of em. :P
want any?
(did i mention they're FREE)

jrg
@LordofTime how much is shipping to Cleveland?

6:09 PM
@jrg from here, not much (Pittsburgh)

:O
How dare you attempt to pull us away with donuts!

cat @LordofTime > /dev/urandom

jrg
@LordofTime Sweet. Please send one box, i'll pay the bill.
(watch. He's going to find out where I live, and then ship me one box of crushed donuts.)
2

How much is shipping to New Delhi? :P

@Mahesh > $250
@jrg lol

6:14 PM
@LordofTime Cool, pay that and send me a box too
:P

@Mahesh shipping costs of over $50 require payment in full of that shipping cost prior to sending the shipment.
@Mahesh Lord of Time Industries will not cover any charges over $50 for shipping
@RolandTaylor its working though, isnt it xD

@LordofTime nevah

@LordofTime What about brokerage fees?

hmm... okay.. send all six boxes, and consider it as if you sent them individually. Like $50 per box.

lololol

6:16 PM
@GeorgeEdison also not covered xD
@Mahesh um... no thanks.

:P

@LordofTime Do you even offer a guaranteed time of arrival?

(Like I need one by lunch time.)

6:17 PM
@GeorgeEdison at least 3 days xD

LoT gguarantees that they arrive b4 they rot

@GeorgeEdison lol, how about i just give you five bucks so you can go get a donut and a coffee/tea/beverage yourself?

or may be after.. :P

Q: Is it acceptable to threaten users with downvotes?

Exeleration-GSee this question: Offline Installation: top answer, third comment. I told the commenter that it's better to correct the answer himself than to threaten others to do so. But I'm still not entirely certain if my reaction was correct. It's good if answers or questions get better this way, but that...

7:00 PM
@jrg where are you?
I was afk

he died disappeared :P

and yes btw
@LordofTime you killed him!

@RolandTaylor actually, i think /dev/chaos disappeared him...

Hi
I'm sorry, I have a pretty urgent question, is there any one out there that could please help me?
I'm having problem with the installation while i'm installing and i'm writing from the dvd boot

7:07 PM
?

thanks god, could you help me?

If I could understand your question, maybe.

I'm trying to install ubunto on Mac OS Lion. I followed a guide and I'm stuck at when you loaded the live version of ubuntu by the dvd and you are trying to install ubuntu following the procedure...

Ubuntu, you mean, it's not Ubunto.
I can't help you for two reasons:

@RolandTaylor (1) you're lazy
@RolandTaylor (2) you have your own issues
@RolandTaylor (just kidding by the way, you just left yourself open to that one)

7:10 PM
1: I don't have a Mac, and you didn't specify whether you are installing on the hardware or the software via a virtual machine.
2: I don't know the steps of the tutorial :).
@LordofTime ♥ mew

In the guide it says there are 3 options: Replace Mac OS X with Ubuntu, Install Ubuntu alongside with Mac OS X, Something else. But I only see 2 options and not the one i should be choosing (Install Ubuntu alongside)...
I'm installing it on the hardware
At least i'm trying

Well, first of all, I don't have a Mac (as I said). Secondly, it's unlikely that you can just "install Ubuntu alongside" just like that.

Do you have a link to this tutorial?

The tutorial is here: ispaziomac.com/20922/…
It's in italian but you can follow the images. There's one with the options I talked you about

Oh jolly! Italiano!
I can read Spanish and English is my native language... we'll see how this goes :P

:) thanks

7:16 PM
Did you miss a step?

No I'm pretty sure.
I re read the guide 10 times

I see a picture with installing Ubuntu alongside Windows first, and then an image that mentions OSX
Hmm...
I've seen other guides for this process and this one looks like it might have more than I'm accustomed to.

The first one in english is the one that should appear to me

What's worse, I have a friend who could help but he is not online.

the second one is the one that the author took by it's own but it's in part "In case you have to reinstall ubuntu"...

7:17 PM
Do you see an option to install alongside MacOSX?

No, I only have: Replace..., Something else

Do you have an extra partition set aside for Ubuntu?
Well two partitions is best really, but yeah...
If you don't it will offer to replace.

No, I only have Mac OS X right now and I was going to do a dual boot with ubuntu

hello @RolandTaylor o/

Hi bruno

7:21 PM
@BrunoPereira oi :D

@Jeffrey What I mean is, did you create a partition (when you were in OSX) for Ubuntu to install onto?

No, I didn't

@GeorgeEdison wow, good job!

And the whole installer is barely 3.5 MB.

7:22 PM
@Jeffrey that's why you don't get the option to install Ubuntu alongside Mac.

Oh, allright
I think I read somewhere how to do that

Create a partition for Ubuntu's / partition, and a partition for the swap space (should be around 4GB or so - but depends on the amount of RAM you have)

I think I have 4gb
I'm just going to code c++ with ubuntu, how much should I need for it? more or less?

@RolandTaylor, thanks for your help

7:26 PM
@Jeffrey The rule of thumb is usually 2xRAM size, for swap space. However, I would go with about 5GB to 6GB of swap in this case.
@Jeffrey you're welcome :)

wait what?
oh ok
and what about the disk space for the partition? i'll have to decide for that too, will I?

Yep
How big is the hard drive?
And how much free space does it have?

250Gb and 190- free space
and 60+ free space
sorry
but i think I can delete other 20 GB of space easily

Give Ubuntu about 30GB if you're not going to be doing anything but coding.

Ok, thanks you very much, I owe you...

7:29 PM
nah
You're welcome
no need to give me anything

Thanks everyone.

@GeorgeEdison thank you!

It won't be long and our Mac version will be ready :)

Nice!

7:30 PM
I have a friend who uses Mac, he will be interested.

I'm not sure if it's packaged yet.
But it definitely compiles and runs.

Cool.
