E: Unable to locate package addgpg-apt

add the ppa
then apt-get update
:P

@TheEvilPhoenix double doh

throws sticks at @Alvar for forgetting to apt-update

@TheEvilPhoenix do you have the link?
@TheEvilPhoenix no I forgot to add the ppa! :P

what am i a repository of knowledge?

6:01 PM
@TheEvilPhoenix yes! :D

info's on that page
now lemme fix this stuff

thanks! :)

@TheEvilPhoenix what stuff?! are you still at work?

@Marco your launchpad is marco-ceppi?
@Alvar building the 2.0.1 packages :P

6:02 PM
ooh yeah I'm in sweden +9 of you right?!

i'm UTC-4 so
probly

@TheEvilPhoenix OMG I downloaded the 2.0.0 source :P
I mean package (tar.gz)

@TheEvilPhoenix Yes

@Alvar you fail. it'll still work, but you'd have to navigate to the unzipped dir, and then do ./addgpg-apt <args>
@Marco added you to the addgpg-apt dev team, you might want to unsubscribe from bug mails though

@TheEvilPhoenix lols

6:04 PM
I have a special "bathroom reading" folder on my mail server that all bugs.lp emails go to
3

@MarcoCeppi love it
@MarcoCeppi Error: This function requires at least one argument

@Alvar Which?

the last one....

@TheEvilPhoenix Bug mails for what? lp or github?

@MarcoCeppi sudo apt-get update | grep "NO_PUBKEY" | awk '{print $21 }' | xargs addgpg-apt

6:08 PM
Try the first one

k

@JamesGifford bug mails for lp
the github repo is private :P
so there are no bug reports
@JamesGifford @Marco's added to the addgpg-apt dev team
they are autosubscribed to addgpg-apt bugs

@TheEvilPhoenix ooohhh.
That makes more sense.

now i wait to see whether the upload to the PPA was accepted... :P
@JamesGifford :P
@JamesGifford missed a bunch, didnt you :p

is ubuntu main server up-to-date? casue I got some strange errors

6:10 PM
Yes I did.

@Alvar what errors

$ sudo apt-get update | grep "NO_PUBKEY" | awk '{ system("addgpg-apt "$21) }'

@TheEvilPhoenix those

I can edit questions, but apparently not delete comments. Is that a moderator-tool only function? A user added command output in a reply comment instead of adding it to his question. I have edited the question to move the output there, but can someone clean up the comment?

Q: Ubuntu and NTFS copying failed

hossI have 2 partitions on my Ubuntu 10.10, one is ext4 for the system, another is NTFS for my data. While copying my files from my flash disk to NTFS partition (via terminal cp -r command), the light has turned off, and now I am unable to mount my NTFS partition, it says that: Error mounting: mount...

the playonlinux ones i recognize :P
@psusi yes that's correct. you cannot remove comments from your question(s)/answer(s)

@psusi Moderator only - you can flag comments though

6:11 PM
unless those are your own comments :P

@TheEvilPhoenix lols

@Alvar btw the keys arent there :P
thats what those errors are for

lol
so what do I do?!

as for the not updated repos, i think you can ignore those ones

should I flag it? it isn't spam or anything, just needs cleaned up since I moved its contents to the question where they belong

6:12 PM
you need to add the keys
duh

@TheEvilPhoenix lawl

@psusi Yes can flag comments for a lot of reasons - obsolete is one I would use for these
Since I'm a moderator I took care of it for you.

@Alvar i pushed the 2.0.1-1 update to the addgpg-apt package :P
for lucid

@Marco Ceppi ahh, cool.. thanks... good to know for the future

once it builds... i'll copy to maverick and natty

6:13 PM
@psusi We try to keep the community as clean and high of quality as possible. If you're uncertain you can always flag something with a message explaining what you think should be done - or just pop in here. One of the three of us are usually in here

@TheEvilPhoenix natty FTW!
@TheEvilPhoenix cool

damn... 10,000 rep... got a ways to go still for that one...

@Alvar i always build it on the earliest supported release
and then copy upwards
so when Lucid disappears... the earliest supported release will be Natty
or something...
:P

@psusi Well 10,000 is like super user. There are three community elected moderators. But just participating makes you a winner in my opinion

@Greg - I am back. Any success?

6:16 PM
well, I'll start using the flagging then... I thought that was just for spam/offensive stuff...

@Takkat lol I read "am I back. " I'm getting tired lol :P

@Marco @Alvar i've gotten the 2.0.1-1 version built, i'm going to push that into the natty and maverick sections after its published

@psusi It's really for anything that needs a moderators review. However, it's not a substitute for things like voting. If something is of low quality you should just downvote instead of flagging unless it's a harmful post (like "Oh just rm -rf /" or something silly like that)

@TheEvilPhoenix nice gj! ;)
I need to play some Urban Terror now...
eagle :P
drunknoobs eagle :P
later

@Alvar lol - I still know I'm here (at least for a while)

6:19 PM
why" bzr push lp:~upto19/+junk/maroon " is wrong and "bzr push --use-existing-dir lp:~upto19/+junk/maroon
" is right?

@MarcoCeppi error: command rm -rf / has been mentioned in the chatroom. This is a public safety hazard

@TheEvilPhoenix error: command lol: not found

stfu
anywyas i'm off

@TheEvilPhoenix See you around.

Hello everyone.

Hello

Anyone heard from Oli?

hi

Jul 27 at 15:23, by Oli
Public service announcement: From Tuesday the 2nd August, Oli is going to be homeless for an undetermined period of time until he moves into his new house (which he doesn't have a completion date for yet). He's staying with friends so might be online but they live in the middle of nowhere, and their internet blows, so he might not. In this time, he'll try his best to stop talking about himself in the third person.

You've answered your own question!
I think there's a badge for that...

6:57 PM
No, no... I read that last week.
I was wondering if he was able to visit the site today or not.

lol he is not homeless he is staying with friends lolz

Let me check
I think I saw him in here earlier

me too actually :P

Yeah, he was around earlier

@Alvar I know.

7:01 PM
right....

@StefanoPalazzo

@Alvar: Can you please check if .config/autostart/stackapplet.desktop exists? (This is about that bug you reported.)

@GeorgeEdison do I just type that in a terminal or is there another way?

Oh, sorry. You can just use Nautilus. Press Ctrl+H to show hidden files...
...and then go to .config, then autostart, and check for stackapplet.desktop.

where is it placed? home? or user?

7:06 PM
@lazyPower brilliant :D

@Alvar Under your home directory.

@lazyPower Sara is going to start learning "programming"

@GeorgeEdison it's there

uh oh... she's going to take over the world

should I open it or? (thought no here)

7:07 PM
@Alvar No, it's okay.

@lazyPower truly awesome :)
I heard the story about the story was a fake...

@Alvar: Could you please run this in a terminal:
> echo -e "import os\nname=os.path.join(os.path.expanduser('~'), '.config/autostart/stackapplet.desktop')\nprint os.path.isfile(name)" | python

OMG
it's true
@GeorgeEdison I mean True

Thanks!

7:13 PM
btw why can't you run the command? don't you have your own coppy of the latset build? :O
@Achu that is a fact!

Well, you're the only one who can reproduce the bug.

@Alvar btw, version 2.0.1-1 is pushed to that PPA if you want to use addgpg-apt :P
and hello to the rest of the world

@TheEvilPhoenix o yeah

Amazing!!

7:13 PM
@TheEvilPhoenix morning

@TheEvilPhoenix whoooooot

@Alvar Fixed the formatting for you :)

who edited that?
that explains that
@GeorgeEdison I thought it was someone big... it could have been marco or stefano.... hmm

@Alvar it might be useful for you to ask the question about the NO_PUBKEY on AU so we can post the response using addgpg-apt

@MarcoCeppi hmm....

Free rep :)

7:19 PM
wait a sec...

I thought you would qute yourself and say like "I think there already is a question about this on AU" ;)
@TheEvilPhoenix no way dont steel my rep
;)

if you're going to use the addgpg-apt script, dont forget to reference the fact its my project :P

@Alvar you ask the question

@Alvar i only need 35 rep before i hit 2k rep
:P

and then @TheEvilPhoenix or myself answers

7:20 PM
you already have 2k

lol

@Marco you answer

You get rep for asking the question, then @TheEvilPhoenix gets teh credit for solving

@MarcoCeppi I'm asking I'm asking :)

Psh, I'm not about the rep, I'll all about the help

7:20 PM
@Marco whats that chain command you wrote earlier
i'll use that ;P
that one-liner

sudo apt-get update | grep "NO_PUBKEY" | awk '{ system("addgpg-apt "$21) }'

I SHALL TAKE IT!
and what was the other one
there was one using xargs...

@Takkat hmmm... I got very far, but then failed...

too bad @Greg, what failed?

@Takkat installed using VMBox to a 20Gb Ext4 partition on the USB HDD (leaving 300Gb free for normal usage on the other NTFS partition)
It was performing the last steps (I believe this is installing the downloaded updates) and the error message appeared regarding installing the boot record.

7:24 PM
@Alvar asked?

so you were unable to write the MBR on the USB drive...? hmm.

@Takkat yeah, I was forced to choose "do not install MBR" and was told that I would have to install the boot record manually afterwards to use ubuntu... but then I got the second error message "The installer has crashed" :|
I was then logged in to the "test" version of ubuntu (rather than "installed" version).

Q: How do I fix no public keys available?

AlvarWhen I download updates or installing new software I get these warnings that I have no public keys. This just appeared one day and I didn't remove/add something to create this. Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 16126D3A3E5C1...

it needs more work....
I don't know what I should have...
hmmm

"@TheEvilPhoneix has a program that can help with adding keys but it hasn't worked yet."

There seems to be a filesystem on the partition, but of course I can't test it.

7:27 PM
have you even tried using it ?

I was wondering if there was an error on the HDD? Could someone recommend a tool to test the integrity of the HDD?

@Greg: how did you create the 20 GB /ext4?

@TheEvilPhoenix ehm

@Alvar btw it definitely wont work if the keys are not in the ubuntu keyservers... you'd need to know the source keyserver first for the non-Ubuntu/non-Launchpad keys

I said it needed some work and you said u wanted credit for ur program.....
@TheEvilPhoenix add that in a edit! :)

7:28 PM
:P
i'm going to answer :P
using addgpg-apt

@Takkat first, I used my main ubuntu OS's Disk Utility, and for my second (and equally failed) attempt I used the tool within the installer on the VM. (The "something else" step)
I did the same thing twice, with only a couple of changes to the steps, but I followed the answer you gave (http://askubuntu.com/questions/16988/how-do-i-install-ubuntu-to-a-usb-key/54388#54388)

hmm brb

@Greg that sound alright to me. Usually the boot partition is on the first primary partition. Do you have another OS on that external drive?

@Takkat nope, I completely formatted the drive, then added the two partitions I mentioned earlier.

@TheEvilPhoenix updated askubuntu.com/q/55698/10698

7:31 PM
(1 20gb ext4, 1 300gb NTFS)

@Takkat you are the VM pro: does oneiric work for you right now? if so, what version of vbox are you using?

@Greg my howto was tested on an unformatted external USB - maybe that makes a difference. You rboot partition should be a primary partition and boot flag on.

@Alvar didn't work how?
:P

@htorque Haven't tested recently.

it agve me errors lol

7:32 PM
and before recently? :P

I had this pumping windows look like something eats my CPU

are you using the ubuntu virtualbox version?

but didn't say what

@Alvar posting those helps :P

I don't know of a VBox version - is that new???
I installed the alpha2 64bit

7:34 PM
sudo apt-get update | grep "NO_PUBKEY" | awk '{ print $21) }' | xargs addgpg-apt

@Takkat let me rephrase: are you using the latest beta version from their website or the default in ubuntu?

@Takkat for my second attempt, I removed all partitions on the HDD before loading the VM, then used the installer to partition it up... exactly the same thing happened here.

@TheEvilPhoenix well I updated again
and now I noticed your answer :P

@htorque I installed the apha2 iso from Ubuntu on Virtual Box 4.1

good, thanks a bunch, will try to downgrade vbox then
hopefully downgrading won't eat my vms :D

7:36 PM
@htorque it won't but you may want to remove the guest additions before

they failed to install, so... :D

(I haven't done this however)

@Greg that's something I haven't come over yet... Usually GRUB can easily be installed even from a virtual machine... You did have installed the PUEL version?

@TheEvilPhoenix edit? :P

7:38 PM
@Takkat I believe so. The extension is there in the list.

then it's installed. Guest additions installed fine too, I hope.
@htorque if there are no guest additions the VDI should be fine after downgrading.

Made some edits @Alvar @TheEvilPhoenix

@Marco recheck, i was already editing the body

:..(

@MarcoCeppi yay! :)

7:40 PM
and i just hit save which overwrote yours

ugh

@htorque !!! ? :/ is puzzled

@TheEvilPhoenix rollback?

@Takkat could this be the answer? i.stack.imgur.com/gkwf2.png

pinned tabs are now wider than regular ones. Time to close some of them

7:42 PM
it's hanging after "* Checking battery state..." - same as with the beta :(
stupid lightdm :P

@Alvar shrugs
regardless

tss

@Alvar the dl.google.com keys are already in the ubuntu keyservers
i checked Google's site

@htorque ah - made a mistake earlier: here is virtual box 4.10 (they had so many versions recently)

@TheEvilPhoenix then waht does that mean?

7:43 PM
@Takkat gotta be 4.0.10 then ;)

it means i want you to try something:
addgpg-apt A040830F7FAC5991

hmmm

just run that
tell me what happens

my laptop imploded

@htorque nope 4.10

7:44 PM
`$ addgpg-apt A040830F7FAC5991

hmm
weird
at least it boots with gdm :)

@htorque it boots with lightdm here
(at least I think so)
last Kernel was 3.0.3

i removed everything lightdm related and reinstalled it - no joy

re-pimped

7:47 PM
@Greg I don't know what this option says... maybe it protects the disk? I doubt it though

dont run that as sudo @Alvar

@MarcoCeppi :D

it doesnt need to be run as sudo
it uses sudo inside itself when its needed

@TheEvilPhoenix well it said i had to in the last line on the last command

@Takkat @everyone Does this indicate HDD failure? Error creating partition table: helper exited with exit code 1: Error calling fsync(2) on /dev/sdb: Input/output error

7:47 PM
yes but the permissions errors are because you prepended the script with sudo

doh

the script itself does not get run as sudo
its documented in the changelogs

@Greg That's not a good sign. It means fsync couldn't write it's changes to the disk

@MarcoCeppi ah crap. Does is mean I'll have to give the disk a funeral? or can I resurrect it?

@Greg I'm honestly uncertain. I assume it's not your primary disk?

7:49 PM
@MarcoCeppi no it's external usb hdd

@TheEvilPhoenix I just ran addgpg-apt for all the key codes that were listed on the errors

and?
it should work :P
run apt-get update again

they had the some ok
will test yes :P

@Greg you could have that too when the disk is mounted while partitioning - it must be unmounted!

The following packages will be upgraded:
google-chrome-stable
O YEAH
IT ALMOST WORKED

7:51 PM
what about the other ones
is playonlinux still not working?

@Takkat there is no mention in the disk utility that it is mounted.

@Greg USB drives tend to autmount...

@Alvar what's still breaking?

@Takkat well, it has no partitions on it so how can I tell if it is mounted?

2
A: How can I resize an external USB NTFS partition?

TakkatUnmounting an external USB drive for partitioning From a running Ubuntu (no need to boot from a live CD) you need to unmount the external USB drive using a terminal with the following command: sudo umount "/media/External USB" Mind that the mountpoint "/media/External USB" is different on you...

7:53 PM
@TheEvilPhoenix '3 keys left
added
retry...

@Greg or try to partition it from a live session.

@Takkat what do you mean, a live session?

good night all

@Alvar the play on linux keys are also on the keyserver(s) according to their respective site support stuffs

@TheEvilPhoenix IT WORKED

7:54 PM
good night @htorque

@TheEvilPhoenix gj man!

mhm
you can make a note of that in the comments then mark mine as the answer :P

@Greg boot Ubuntu installation from CD/USB and choose try out Ubuntu

hmm ok I'll try that

and also read my comment to your comment on my answer

7:55 PM
@Greg Gparted should be accessible from a live session

@TheEvilPhoenix did

@TheEvilPhoenix then read my comment on your comment! ;)

That sure looks like him.

:)
whooo now i only need 10 rep :P
and i'll be at the coveted 2k rep mark

7:58 PM
This page really gives Chrome trouble.
Look at all of the comments!

:O
I... can't believe it.... I now have... 2000 reputation...

PAAAAAAAAAAARTY

stares at the screen in awe of this achievement

busts out the balloons

WHOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOO!!!
:p

8:05 PM

we just have to be careful... if I get to 2666 or 3666 or god forbid 6666...
it'll confirm my evil status :P

Congrats @TheEvilPhoenix \o/

thanks...
now i have the edit privilege i've been after for months :P

8:09 PM
oh god...
just 64 se-wide rep...

how can I verify that my hdd isn't broken?

and i'll have an se-wide rep of 3666
TRIPLE EVIL!
@Greg check the SMART on it
long SMART test
oop work day's over... time to enter my time and disappear from here :P

surely I shouldn't actually choose MSDOS???

I wouldn't recommend it

choose ext4 for Ubuntu!
NTFS for Windows

8:14 PM
@Takkat check the screenshot
I see no ext4

@Greg oh - I see... but why?

this is turning out an utterly confusing exercise...

partiton table != partition type

I see - it's what the MBR is like
you could go for MSDOS or GPT
but if you need to boot Windows you need MSDOS

@Takkat ah, well I will be using the hdd for general backup, but I want a small partition to boot ubuntu on a Windows machine i.e. at work

8:19 PM
If you boot only Ubuntu you can also go for GPT

@Takkat right, I get you. Sorry to be the noob tonight, but I am really struggling at this. I just want to confirm this with you if its ok.

@Greg: you will manage! If not, you will learn a lot. So in all eventual cases it is win for you ;)

heh, I hope!
Here's the settings for what I'm planning to use to boot from, do they look ok?:
I am planning to format the rest of the drive after the install.

@Greg +1 to me. Don't forget to add the boot flag

@Takkat huh - I'm not sure where to add the boot flag...

8:26 PM
that's later...

@Takkat I see. So I've assigned the boot flag and notice there's a bios_grub flag too - does that need to be assigned somewhere?

Good job @TheEvilPhoenix - now I'll just start doing random downvotes. JOKING

@Greg I am not sure, but I don't think so...
(I have no bios_grub flag here)
@Greg wait: it's GPT? Then you may need the bios_grub flag...

8:51 PM
@Takkat hmm, so /dev/sda1 (the 20gb partition) will need the bios_grub flag?

if you chose GPT - yes.
if you chose MSDOS then boot flag

I don't like the sound of MS DOS

oh - DOS was not bad!
(not good either)
not much choice then... ;P
