Q: Why is this program erroneously rejected by three C++ compilers?

James McNellisI am having some difficulty compiling a C++ program that I've written. This program is very simple and, to the best of my knowledge, conforms to all the rules set forth in the C++ Standard. I've read over the entirety of ISO/IEC 14882:2003 twice to be sure. The program is as follows: Here i...

I don't get it

I guess the animated GIF in the answer was really huge.
@MarcoCeppi The poor guy is trying to compile a PNG file with the source code.

trollin' hard
That's what I thought - wasn't sure

Should I be worried when I see 7.73?

Here's a simple JS Studio script that opens itself in the editor:

@GeorgeEdison How many cores do you have?

2.
It's a Centrino Duo.

Yeah, you're long term load is over 100% utilization. Whatever you're doing I wouldn't keep doing it for too long

@MarcoCeppi It was viewing the animated GIF in the answer to the question I linked to above.

12:55 AM
hah!

Really... no joke.

1:40 AM
well that was some really good food... :P
anyways i'm back :P
@GeorgeEdison Just because i'm an evil person and want to compare internet speeds...

how do we normally do if a post if duplicated?

Q: Is there an app that can set color labels for individual files and folders?

quangtruong1985Is there any app that could set label color for individual file/folder like in Mac OS X? Just something like this :

Q: Can we have Mac like 'labels' on GNOME?

funkymonkCan we some how use color labels on icons like OS X?? Something like this:

@JohanSJA If you have enough rep you can vote to close. If you do not then place a comment on the topic which is a duplicate saying "Possible Duplicate: <link>" where the link is the thread it's duplicating

@MarcoCeppi Thanks.

No problem, you can also just post them in here or in the Ubuntu Regulators Room and either a user with high enough rep will cast a vote or a moderator will see it and close it.
It's always helpful regardless to put the comment pointing out the duplication - we have quite a few users in here at any time - but not all of the Ask Ubuntu users sit in chat :)

ya
this chatroom is useful for real time chatting

I agree. It's pretty dead in here now. Most users are in the UTC+2 -> UTC-7 time range

4:43 AM
I am in UTC+8

Ah, I'm in UTC-4 as such I'm about to go to sleep :)

ok

I'm still here.

@JohanSJA they will now :)
can you access this page www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk

I can't access that

JohanSJAIf you go to the Language Support in the System Settings, you will notice that you got two tabs - Language and Text. Night all.

So is this more like a bug or a problem that can be solved easily?
Can't really understand this guy easily.

@JohanSJA me neither.. Guess I have to read all twice or more

First I thought he don't know how to do something, but his comments seems to be blaming 11.04 for not doing what prior 11.04s were doing.

you shots are 10.04?

I took it from a website since I was not in my machine at that time
:) my fault if it is not recommended doing so

7:10 AM
you can always edit the answer and put new ones in ;)

I will try to find some now
:)

@JohanSJA gimme 2 minutes...

Thank you

7:15 AM
Just edit the links to the images here
so you don't even have to upload them...

Thanks. Just finished the editing.

Oh no! 404 on launchpad during update...

@Takkat that was bad

It said I should check my internet connection :/
(which obviously is good)
US server is better (esp. at this time of day)

US is still very early in the morning now

7:26 AM
:) Update finished...
... but says it needs a restart :/
(it's only the virtual OS)

you do your development on a Virtual OS?

I don't but all testing is done there (and playing with new stuff...)
The advantage is that you can run different versions (10.04, 10.10, 11.04, 11.10) at the same time without a reboot.

ya.

now updating 11.10 (keep fingers crossed)

I am running a server in as a Guest OS in my mainbox as well

7:32 AM
you can separate things very cleanly

Ubuntu 11.10 - a lot of good expectations for that.
Each new release is giving out new things
excited about that

what I can see there are great improvements esp. Unity and Kernel 3.0 is hopefully stable here

Even though I would be even glad if it is a rolling release which new updates just keep coming.
Unity & kernel in 11.04 is not as bad for me as well
compared to the critics that exists around the web

rolling releases only make sense if there are not constantly new bugs popping in
Criticism is always.
with every single new release.

But a 6 months release is good as well
in fact, I am considering switch to a LTS in future

7:36 AM
Some people don't like a change. If we listened to them we'd still not have a graphical desktop environment

ya

@JohanSJA I had 10.04 until yesterday on my main machine
but 11.04 on the other one.

10.04 just won't run on my Dell Inspiron N4030. Lack of drivers here and there

Now I missed Unity that much, that I had to upgrade ;P

ya. Unity is a huge user experience improvement
it just feel so cool to use it
I just hope that they will improve the window overlapping across workplace issue
but that's really Unity problem
it exists before that as well
*isn't

7:39 AM
lol: isn't! - 264 upgrades for 11.10 (I was lazy recently)
I like it when there is much room for improvements.
I couldn't live with a perfect OS

There won't be a perfect OS. Too much things that can be implemented, improved, and maybe removed.

7:58 AM
restarting 11.10 Hope it boots...

let's hope so

success :)

so what is the new features from this upgrade?

lol: can't possibly check all 264 apps...
for now it looks pretty much the same - hope crashes become fewer

that's true in fact
11.04 has never crashed on me

8:05 AM
you're lucky then :)

it crashed often for your case?

It did on the other box - maybe due to some hardware incompatibilities...
Pulseaudio was a problem there
This message comes from 11.10 on the Virtual Box
@JohanSJA It's not the OS that crashes but rather single applications that don't play nice

logging into AU in 11.10?
oh I see

Yeah.
I am running the chat on FF6 in 11.10... sweet
minor drawback: Compiz is not running in the VM

VM are hardly powerful enough to run Compiz

8:13 AM
but for a VM 3D is asking for too much anyway - it performs so much faster in 2D

so you have no Unity on that?

11.04 runs quite good in 3D and virtual box

ohya.. I forgot about Unity 2D
:D

Unity 2D is great in 11.10!

Good morning everyone

8:14 AM
3D and 2D? Confusing, should get a better name for that

Hi @Greg

doesn't reflect what it means
Morning, @Greg

@Takkat let me apologise for being the giga-n00b last night !
...was outside my comfort zone

@JohanSJA true. From what I can see it's simply called Unity in 11.10
@Greg I didn't realise.. :)

sarcastic

8:15 AM
@Takkat
then how you differentiate a 2D from 3D?
If I am not wrong, 2D are an attempt to make low-end system to have equal UX as 3D

I heard about Unity 2D. IMO my unity doesn't have any 3d effects, but it isn't called unity 2d

from what I have seen, they look pretty similiar.

@JohanSJA the applications still say unity-2d-***

is 2d the unofficial-lighter-on-cpu version?

ok

8:17 AM
2D is a fallback for systems where Compiz doesn't run

so the 3d is much like the 'Windows Vista' - requiring a better hardware
then come 2D like 'Windows 7' - trying to lower the barrier

2D runs automatically - no need to start in "2D mode" in 11.10
I don't see three dimensions anyway... :P

so any different from 3D?

not much
The stack on the lower left launcher is less "stacky"

so maybe only the transparency on the dash launcher
which can be hardly noticed

8:22 AM
yeah it's minor graphical differences but it operates very similar now

and do you get the new alt-tab as in omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/07/alt-tab-ubuntu
?

yep!
even though in 2D looks different
(can't show you as it disappears on selecting screenshot)

cool... that's a great thing
:D
you can always set the screenshot to take at a delay

@JohanSJA too lazy to so this for the VM ;P
the Alt-Tab feature in 11.04 is great as it shows you the contents of windows!

ya
but it is missing in 11.10?

8:35 AM
ahh crap. closing tab with ctrl+f4, but accidently fn+f4. sleep time for laptop in the middle of a massive file copy. angry

@Greg: that's why I hate keyboard shortcuts ;P
@JohanSJA well it's not in Unity2d - 3D I don't know
(would have to reboot from my USB)

that's ok
I love keyboard shortcuts... but I hardly use ctrl+f4
:D

I'd love to have a desktop environment that guesses what I want to do and always does the right thing without me having to do anything ;)

maybe we are not too far from that - artificial intelligent

@Takkat I'd love to have that feature in a programming language!

8:42 AM
lol
@JohanSJA just coming back to the window overlapping issue. What is that doesn't work for you?

Not really something not working. It is just that I would prefer a window to only stays in one workspace
and not across workspace
GNOME Shell is working that way when I tried Fedora 15. So I am not sure if it is a feature in GNOME Shell or GNOME 3. And if it is GNOME3, perhaps I will get it in 11.10 as well.

on multi monitor?

no, on a single monitor

If you disable Flipping in Viewport settings from CCSM windows stay on one workspace
(found in "Desktop Wall")

OK. I will try that when I am back to my Ubuntu box.
OK. Just to confirm that you understand my problem.
I opened a windows on workspace 2. Then I drag down until some parts are over the border.
In 11.04, the parts that are over the border are now visible in workspace 4.
I don't want them to be visible in workspace 4

8:53 AM
I see - they are still visible there. So what I said won't help you
Worse is IMO that if you enabled flipping and drag a window over the top panel it will disappear.

so I guess I will try that again in 11.10
F15 can do that. So I am wondering is that a feature in GNOME Shell or GNOME 3.

yeah chances are good ;)

Hope that it is a GNOME 3 and not GNOME shell feature
so that I can use it with Unity

It works with Unity2D on my virtual box
(no overlapping)

great
So just assume that it will works in GNOME 3

9:06 AM
looks like that

so how is your experience with 11.10 so far? Anything unpleasant?

can't really tell, as I am not using it heavily - but as far as I tried it feels great. Crashes were rare (considering it's alpha).
Still, I wouldn't use it on my productive system until 2-4 weeks after release.
I don't mind crashes or freezes when playing but I'd go crazy if that happens while I am working at something

I guess that's the same for everyone
:)
so you will only be using 11.04 for a short period

as soon as 11.10 is stable I'll upgrade ;)

9:21 AM
ya... judging on GNOME 3 and Kernel 3 upgrade, it worths doing so perhaps

9:41 AM
Open irc:// links in XChat from Firefox and Chromium http://bit.ly/ntnGN1 #firefox

9:55 AM
@Takkat going back to last night's installation nightmares, can you explain to me why it is necessary to install using a VM? Can't I install Ubuntu with a regular restart, and simply choose my USB HDD instead?

The only browser that was slow enough to be able to use csn.se was firefox, all the others timed out xD

10:17 AM
@Greg you can, but you will not (easily) be able to boot on another machine as your (non-portable) harddisks and other hardware will be added to your installation. In addition by using a virtual box you make sure that your main system installation will not be altered.
Virtual Box is an alternative to widely practised procedure that involves unplugging your local disks before you install to USB

11:22 AM
hi, are there anyone who I can ask something ?

@fatai yeah sure, what's up? :)

I have trying to use keryx for my computer but I could not manage use it. I have searched many website but I found no detail in them, how to properly install and use it. I have seen some problem can I tell you?

@fatai I've never used it, but this has been linked on the site: crashsystems.net/2009/01/keryx-tutorial
maybe it helps. if not, just ask a question on the site, you'll get an answer quite quickly I'm sure

Hi all

@StefanoPalazzo thanks, you know I have deleted my network manager from software center but now I must download some packages namely ghdl and two compiler. However, for an hour, I could not manage anything. Wrong thing always teach me something but now I have learned nothing. Anyway, I am going to other site to look

11:31 AM
afternoon Alvar, James

Good morning Stefano

@fatai you should just ask a question on this site, if you explain your situation in great detail, I'm sure someone will come up with a solution

@StefanoPalazzo but my topic is so narrow. In ten seconds, it will be closed.

Afternoon to you @StefanoPalazzo, morning @Alvar.

@fatai so, you have no internet connection on this machine?

11:35 AM
Kind of hard installing anything then...

@StefanoPalazzo yeap

@fatai that's a good question! something like "How do I re-install Network Manager without an internet connection"

Very good question!

@StefanoPalazzo can you ask because I think you can write a good question and it is also your question ?

Like download the package on anotherachine ad then add it to the system?
Nooo u ask it! He can edit!

11:39 AM
@fatai I can't, because I won't be able to test any solutions,
don't worry about the question, we will just edit it if there's anything to improve

@StefanoPalazzo okey, I am trying to write it.

there are 149 regular editors, at your service :)

link it to us so someone (@StefanoPalazzo) can edit it! :)

Q: How do I re-install Network Manager without an internet connection

fataiI have only wireless connection and one computer with Internet connection. My second computer has no network connection, because I have deleted from software center. However, now I want to re-install it. How can I do that wish ?

nice

11:46 AM
now the stopwatch is running

@StefanoPalazzo this question is like a puzzle, isn't it ?

@fatai I think the solution to this is very easy,
if I had an ubuntu cd on hand, I'd answer it myself, but I don't have one at the moment

@StefanoPalazzo should I add to this question "I have one 4gb usb" ?

@fatai yes that would be helpful
the solution will probably be to enable the CDROM repository, I'm not sure how that works with USB disks

I think few people is online. just five person have looked my question

12:01 PM
just had a look in my VM: couldn't add CD-ROM source if you have no CD-ROM drive attached :/
Does the .iso need to be mounted as CD-ROM, is that possible at all?

12:13 PM
are there any one who have used keryx ?

nope. I had the problem that you'd need to install Keryx on the machine with no internet. :/
That is not harder than installing network-manager on the machine without internet ;)

No I am not asking how to download it to my no internet computer. my question is : are there any need that both computer should include installed- keryx?

@fatai yeah, because Keryx needs to find out what dependencies are missing on your offline box

12:38 PM
how can I download ghdl to my computer?
or installing ghdl without libgnat-4.4 (>= 4.4.4-14ubuntu2), is this installation gives error ?

How do I re-install Network Manager without an internet connection? http://bit.ly/oqOkAW #1004

1:04 PM
Blergh. - askubuntu.com/questions/55568/… (read the comments)
I got the accepted answer even though I didn't solve it for him. I just got him on the right track. :P

haha
guilty receiving of rep huh @James

edits the answer

@fatai you'd need to have that as a dependency.

@TheEvilPhoenix Guilty as charged. :P

@fatai the entire reason it fails is because that is a required dependency for libgnat-4.4
@fatai hence why the installation fails without it.
@fatai you would have to download the .deb for that dependency
@fatai and install it

1:08 PM
OMG I just noticed that I can see the + and - on votes! (not just the total)!!! :D:D:D

@fatai and install any other dependencies that that package depends on

@JamesGifford I missed something... i saw the link back to my old post, but wheres the product?

@lazyPower What I've got so far is in /home/jrg/code/onenote-clone/

@JamesGifford nice. what language are you using?

@Alvar heh

1:10 PM
@TheEvilPhoenix thanks so much

@lazyPower Ruby. Figured out how to use Shoes for GUI apps.

@fatai yep, but beware...
sometimes there can be MANY dependencies

sweet. GL James :)

I couldn't before... @stefanoPalazzo said it was like a 3k+ thing... apperently not lol

I'll beta/alpha test for you

1:10 PM
in which case you'll have to download the packages for those...
and install them first

(cross-platform, but I'm only going to have support for Unix filesystems)
OK. I'll ping you once I've got something that works. :)

nods If you put it on a public github, someone else can do the windows hooks.

I'm not ready for that yet. :)

@lazyPower i.e. @lazyPower :P

@TheEvilPhoenix haha ;)

1:11 PM
i also know a pretty fiznilthy rails dev. if you run into any issues let me know and i'll link you up with him
@TheEvilPhoenix <3

I wonder why linux is not user-friend ?

@fatai it technically is...
but its built to update with internet-facing things
i.e.

Okie-dokie.

@fatai: harsh words! Users are not linux-friendly
3

all the dependencies, rather than being in one installer file, like in Windows...
are separate
because maybe you need one of the dependencies but not all the software that comes along with the software

1:13 PM
I always spend more time to fix one problem.

i.e. i need the qt4 libraries

@Takkat :)

but i dont need qt4 dev environments
@fatai and this is why we exist: to help people

@fatai I am just trying out sth for you - hope it works...

@TheEvilPhoenix you know, are there a life before ubuntu forums or stakoverflow-ubuntu

1:15 PM
@fatai i'm a .NET project manager so i know what you mean
i do have real life stuff
but not today because the project is done ;P
so i show up here
and help people
as such...

@fatai There is no life other than AskUbuntu.

yawns crap i need coffee... COFFEE RUN!

@all thanks so much, I must go.... have a nice day

reminds me of severe LAVAZZA deficiency in my blood

oh, and btw... i only need 6 rep before 3666 is a reality... thus triple evil :P
@fatai no problem, we are here to help :P

1:18 PM
@TheEvilPhoenix So what is that? a +2 and then a few downvotes by you?

@fatai If my test worked I'll write you an answer....

@JamesGifford eh?

@TheEvilPhoenix Two upvotes (+10) and then four downvotes (-4) so it's 3666?

yeah basically :P

1:19 PM
or an accepted answer then 9 downvotes :P
and i've been saving downvotes for a day when i'm in a purely evil mood
so... :P

although...
a tag wiki create and a tag wiki edit would get be +6 more...
:P
oop i lied, i need 9 rep :P

Make up your mind? :P

1:44 PM
yep, i need 9 rep :P
and another $50... i had to purchase another set of DVD-Rs... stupid huge ISOs from Microsoft...

1:55 PM
argh someone gave me +20 globally...
oh well
fooey
i'll wait until 4666 >:)
oh that explains it
my answer on security.se to a question got upvoted
