Is the command line structure the same for Linux and Ubuntu? http://bit.ly/puSz1j #commandline

12:59 AM
BOOM!
sup peoples

1:41 AM
hi TEP

1 hour later…
2:51 AM
After watching that, and you're not laughing, rolling on the floor, or heading to the bathroom - you need help.
Hi, everyone :)

I probably shouldn't watch it then

o/ roland, ajmitch

3:33 AM
o.o
I was being told to login to chat, now suddenly I'm logged in...
is confused

@RolandTaylor yep I had to log in as well
maybe the server was restarted → cookies invalidated

Hi guys, I'm not able to find the right documetation (I don't think this needs a question) it's surely done before
I want to install windows

How to "dock" empathy so side of desktop (Digsby style) http://bit.ly/pcG8X2 #1104

with dual boot, I have arch linux alaready running
does anybody have some experience with this

3:51 AM
@Trufa when you install windows, it will overwrite the bootloader program
so, you need to have an ubuntu cd or a usb disk handy
1) install windows, making sure you don't overwrite the ubuntu partition obviously ;-)
and then 2) boot from the ubuntu disk, select "repair a broken system" (or something similar) and run the "update-grub" command
I haven't installed windows for many years, but this should work

@StefanoPalazzo awww
thank you very much

hope I'm right (:

probably :)
I now need to download an whole os
to install another os
how very windowsy

@Trufa if nothing has changed since I last checked, the ubuntu disk will ask you to select a repair option. I'm thinking you should have to select "drop to a root shell" (or similar). Maybe it even has an option like "repair bootloader"

@StefanoPalazzo Just in case, I have arch linux installed

3:56 AM
this is the official documentation: help.ubuntu.com/community/…

even so I should do it with ubuntu?

looks outdated :-(
@Trufa yeah, ubuntu will just detect all your operating systems

ohh
that sounds good!

omigosh @StefanoPalazzo check this out :D: youtube.com/watch?v=0bRlh5KO0VQ&feature=related

4:01 AM
I was reading through documentation
and I found this
> youll have to make a boot flopy so ye can boot linux up on the hard drive

morning sickness @RolandTaylor (never mind, the english language has bitten me again... I don't have morning sickness, this video just makes me sick and it happens to be morning here)

that sounds outdated...

hehe
that was outdated even when the first version of ubuntu was released

@RolandTaylor that creeps the hell out of me

okay I'll go out for some breakfast now. see you later o/

4:06 AM
@StefanoPalazzo hehe

that's odd
same here O.o
I don't feels so good right now :s
and it's morning

maybe we're both pregnant
@Trufa good luck with the windows thing, pop in here if something goes wrong
laters (:

@StefanoPalazzo thank you very much for the help!!
I hope everything goes smothly
otherwise
I'll post a question

travels to the future to ask his wife if he is pregnant

1 hour later…
5:41 AM
@StefanoPalazzo: I assume you noticed something new in the preferences dialog in JS Studio :)

@GeorgeEdison ono I didn't upgrade yet, let me do that now

No problem.

oi cool :D

I took your advice.
...and now the Windows (and Ubuntu) builds have a nice icon set.

@GeorgeEdison a small thing, I'm not quite sure about this:
should you apply changes to the preferences when the user hits the "X" on the preferences window?

5:47 AM
They're actually instantly applied.
But I bet you only see the icons change when you close it...
...that's because the main window only updates (repaints) itself after the dialog is dismissed.

oh right, that makes sense

Rest assured that the actual change takes place right away.

one more thing, even smaller: the Preferences are called "Options" in the main menu. Should be consistent. Also, the Preferences button should be in the "Edit" menu on Linux ("Tools" on Windows, I think)
imgur is down :\

Right.

anyway, you know in gedit there's a dropdown on the Open toolbutton, showing the five most recently opened files
I use that all the time, it would be a nice feature to have in jss as well
@GeorgeEdison while I'm at it, I have a couple of suggestions built up: 1) search/replace should treat \n, \t, and so on like newlines and tabs, and \\n as "\n". I often replace ", \n" with ",\n" and things like this.
2) an option to (subtly) highlight the current line would be nice
3) fullscreen mode please!
that's all I can think of for now

6:42 AM
@StefanoPalazzo It's planned, I was going to add that soon.
@StefanoPalazzo Thanks for the ideas.
Fullscreen mode... hmmm.
Gotta go now... night all.

Q: The package containing shutdown command

AkilanWhich Debian or Ubuntu package has the /sbin/shutdown command in it? I want to read the source of that command (and possibly modify it to report notification on desktop) and I didn't know which package source to download.

7:51 AM
i like how the "Launchpad Janitor" auto-confirms bugs now - that was long overdue.

nice! Good morning @htorque :)

good morning!
missing the absorbers?
having full absorber load here, so good bye! :-)

8:17 AM
here private absorbers only - that's fine.

Q: VPN with network manager (nm-applet) is not working

lumbricMy university (TU Wien) offers a VPN in order to get an IP of the university network. The instruction on the university webpage says to install the packages network-manager-gnome, network-manager-vpnc and vpnc and also a screenshot with the correct settings is provided: http://www.zid.tuwien.ac.a...

8:49 AM
@georgeEdison I updated the translations before the last build but they didn't even come into todays build, why is that?
morning all! :)

10:21 AM
is there anything like an online movie rental service for ubuntu?
kind of like the apple itunes store?

10:48 AM
@JoshuaRobison there's nothing to stop you using LoveFilm or something similar.
If you want a ubuntu specific application, then not to my knowledge.

11:07 AM
@Greg, nah. anything would be good. any online service at all
lovefilm will let me buy movies online? or rent them?

Miro?

hmm ok ill check those out

Q: My Dad is impatient with the pace of my learning to program. What do I do?

DavidSo my Dad bought me 5 books on programming (C++, Java, PHP, Javascript, Android) about a month ago. He's an architect and he knows NOTHING about programming. He bought me them because I told him programming was fun and I wanted to learn it. As you might know, being a kid and being told to learn...

That's both sad and encouraging. :P

heh
people who dont want to learn do not enter the programming field :P
and...
good morning everyone

Good morning.

damn it, i knew i was forgetting something...
i forgot breakfast runs to grab something to eat

With some additional assistance from the awesome kernel team, I'm going to try to upload again

1:05 PM
@Marco getting help from FreeNode? :P

@TheEvilPhoenix Yeah, I've been in the ubuntu-kernel room all yesterday and today. I keep making sure that I only ask questions after I've exhuasted searching

:P
you should have seen me when i started with packaging

the answer is usually "fakeroot debian/rules <some opt>"

i was in #ubuntu-packaging for like ever :P

apparently the build failed because I didn't run debian/rules updateconfigs
go figure.

1:07 PM
@MarcoCeppi You need to start asking on askubuntu and then answered from the help they give you on irc. :P

heh
indeed

We could have become the kernel packaging site!
:P

hooah, breakfast :P

@JamesGifford I plan on it. I just need to get it to work once though!

@MarcoCeppi Yay!

1:08 PM
I plan on self-documenting how to patch the ubuntu-kernel from git and package it

@Marco so you patched it with the openvz patch?

got the patched Natty kernel? :P

Just doing lucid at the moment
because the patch is only made for 2.6.32

ah
i see

1:09 PM
but, after this I'm going to merge down the 2.6.33->38 on top of git
And try to compile the 2.6.38 kernel with openvz patch
but if I can get it working in lucid that would be fine
ultimate goal is to provide the openvz patch+kernel, openvz tools, and up-to-date container templates in the ppa
Good news, it looks like the Canonical Server team is finally reviewing the code for AptUrlRedirector

1:34 PM
Here goes nothing all up to you build servers!

1:50 PM
$5 says it fails

Duh it fails
it'll fail for at least the next 5 times
Using /build/buildd/linux-2.6.32-33.72 as source for kernel
/build/buildd/linux-2.6.32-33.72 is not clean, please run 'make mrproper'
grr

don't forget - mrproper will also kill your .config

Yeah, I found that out last night - apparently I just need to delete includes/config directory to remove the "is no clean" error

@RolandTaylor I was having chat problems for a while, I had to clear my cookies

2:05 PM
Yesterday chat was kind of brought to it's knees for 30 mins

oh my problems happened months ago

@JorgeCastro I think I have double problems.
I had to force my system to restart last night after flash decided to bug compiz, and voila - had to log back into everything manually.

2:22 PM
_usr_bin_compiz.1000.crash _usr_bin_unity-2d-places.1000.crash _usr_lib_opera_operapluginwrapper-native.1000.crash _usr_lib_unity_unity-panel-service.1000.crash
and apport didn't pop up once >:(

yeah...

4:50 PM
4th rebuild today, here goes nothing

@htorque this one is for you

haha

5:12 PM
got a question that sounds a bit corny, but i am really curious
how did you guys get so knowledgeable ? what did u learn, how did u learn it? basically looking for a learning-map to speak...
@MarcoCeppi @JorgeCastro : guys?

Like, about Ubuntu?

@nitstorm Many years of trying to solve problems that I didn't know how

Yeah , Ubuntu, Linux in general, scripting and all
@MarcoCeppi: Lol :P Any advice on learning paths/ maps?

I was a developer that reluctantly became a system administrator about 8 years ago. From there I grew to love system administration almost as much as writing code.

Personally, I think becoming knowledgeable is more about placing yourself in a certain environment more than anything. The more you work with Ubuntu, the more these problems sort of come up and you learn things.

5:18 PM
Find someting that annoys you, or that you want. Beat your head against the keyboard until you can figure it out. Ask for help along the way of course - then profit :)

@MarcoCeppi @ Mana: Cool, thanks :)

If you force yourself to try and follow a learning path, you're more than likely to simply lose interest. But if you're curious about something and look into it you're going to be actively learning new things

+1 from @Mana Using it everyday as much as possible, whenever possible (laptops, desktops, old machines, new machines) will give you a lot of experience dealing with corner cases

Sweet! So free-learning+experience without scheduled syllabus :)

Pretty much.

5:23 PM
Pretty much :D syllabi are the reason why I never did good in school

@MarcoCeppi : Lol, I currently suck at school :P
@MarcoCeppi @Mana : Thanks for the advice guys :) Appreciate it.

The problem with school is that it takes a certain mindset to do well. Either you have to be the type who can really sit down and just work at something regardless of how interested you are in it for ridiculous amounts of time, or be the type who is actively curious in understanding how everything works.

@Mana I always found writing code was more fun. I would regularly skip classes and sit in the library instead to work on whatever project I was doing at the time
Okay, 5th times a charm for the build servers - here goes nothing

I have some problems with my ppa:S an repository! :(
W: A error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files will be used. GPG error: extras.ubuntu.com natty Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 16126D3A3E5C1192
I get a load of stuff like this
can someone help?!

@Marco :) I'm the same way. However, this next year I'm planning on really biting the bullet and actually attending all the lectures I can. I figure I gotta take some pain if I want to be able to do what I actually want.

5:28 PM
all the time when I ahve to upgrade a program it says "this package couldn't be authenticated! :(
what can I do?!
@marcoCeppi you know this stuff right?!

Well good luck @Mana I stopped after high school myself - I don't think I could have done another 4 years at a university

@Alvar Is it actively preventing you from updating, or is it simply a warning?

@Mana it's just warning, but I have to say yes to every package I upgrade

@Alvar If you're going from the GUI, try it from the CLI - it usually gives you the chance to ignore that warning

which is very annoyinh

5:29 PM
There is a question about this on AU I think
2

@MarcoCeppi true, but how to remove the warnign via the terminal
@MarcoCeppi I thought so...

@Alvar Try just running apt-get update

too much to paste here

Hum
You could manually add each key to your key ring

yeah
@MarcoCeppi that sounds stupid

5:37 PM
I could write you a one-liner to do it

isn't the keyrings available as a script?
@MarcoCeppi really?! :O :D
that would be awesome

yeah, one second

cool

@Alvar maybe not, looks like it'll be two lines
Try this first though sudo apt-key update

@nitstorm I've been doing this for about ... 15 years
it's not smart as much as I happened to be around when most of the stuff happened

5:47 PM
@JorgeCastro: hmmm...

$ sudo apt-key update
gpg: key 437D05B5: public key "Ubuntu Archive Automatic Signing Key <ftpmaster@ubuntu.com>" imported
gpg: key FBB75451: public key "Ubuntu CD Image Automatic Signing Key <cdimage@ubuntu.com>" imported
gpg: Total number processed: 2
gpg: imported: 2
gpg: no ultimately trusted keys found

6:06 PM
@MarcoCeppi Do I need a second line? :)

No, my second approach is really hacky. I decided not to write it
My kernel project also failed another build, so I'm out looking for answers

aaahh...
hope this works
W: A error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files will be used. GPG error: extras.ubuntu.com natty Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 16126D3A3E5C1192
still there... :/

Well.. you want the hack?

6:26 PM
you could just request the key...
and you could just use the addgpg-apt script i created
although it fubars lately
so i have to fix it :P
whooo only 49 rep until i can edit posts without peer approvals to have the edits take :P (yes, I know anyone can revert them)
launchpad.net/addgpg-apt <-- if you're interested
there's PPAs for it too... but they might be out of date

How can I change the alt+middle-mouse-button resize to alt+right-mouse-button? http://bit.ly/oQUFQd #unity

hey @Marco... want to test something for me?

Sure, I can try

can you test the addgpg-apt script to see if it can successfully download a PGP pubkey to your system
there was a weird bug i was getting but i havent gotten any other system(s) to replicate it on
this is the bug:
[kahless]% addgpg-apt 5509C82E gpg: requesting key 5509C82E from hkp server keyserver.ubuntu.com gpg: key 5509C82E: "Thomas Ward (2nd Launchpad PGP Key) <email address hidden>" not changed gpg: Total number processed: 1 gpg: unchanged: 1 gpg: no writable keyring found: eof gpg: error reading `-': general error gpg: import from `-' failed: general error Above is error code. The error is triggered on a PGP key that is not utilized, but is a new key. Source of error: unknown.
addgpg-apt
Critical / Confirmed
can you see if you can replicate it?
i've intentionally been putting it off until i can either fix my systems or fix it myself
but i'm kinda at a loss
and if you get the same error and know anything about bash scripting, please let me know what you think the cause is
mainly i think its this: gpg: no writable keyring found: eof
but i cant see if that's a global error
and you can specify the keyserver/key... by default it uses the Ubuntu keyservers
so you could even try and pull one of my LP keys if ya want

6:45 PM
marco@XPS-8100:/usr/src/openvz/lucid/ubuntu-lucid$ addgpg-apt 5509C82E
gpg: requesting key 5509C82E from hkp server keyserver.ubuntu.com
gpg: key 5509C82E: public key "Thomas Ward (2nd Launchpad PGP Key) <trekcaptainusa.tw@gmail.com>" imported
gpg: Total number processed: 1
gpg: imported: 1 (RSA: 1)
gpg: no writable keyring found: eof
gpg: error reading `-': general error
gpg: import from `-' failed: general error
marco@XPS-8100:/usr/src/openvz/lucid/ubuntu-lucid$ sudo addgpg-apt 5509C82E

yep its ending on the same line as mine...
can you post that to the bug?
so that i can point out the exact location of where its breaking?
so i'm not crazy... it IS breaking
now if i read this...
it does correctly read the key from the server
and it does attempt to import but it cant right to teh apt keyring...
oh thats where its breaking...
i think its breaking on apt-key...
want to know what's really strange?
it didnt do this in the first version
which was horribly basic coding
didnt even have a help section
interesting though that it does download the key correctly but then cant add it to the apt keyring...
hm
i shall have to explore this...
i wonder...
@MarcoCeppi i'll be pushing a change and updating the PPA later...
when i do that later, can I ask ya to see if it still works with one of my other keys?
(perhaps the test key I made for my keyserver... from my keyserver... :P)
OOH I THINK I HAVE A SOLUTION!
FILES
       /etc/apt/trusted.gpg
Keyring of local trusted keys, new keys will be added here.
I think i'll force specify that keyring
as that's the default keyring anyways
http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/natty/en/man8/apt-key.8.html:
OPTIONS
Note that options need to be defined before the commands described in
       the previous section.
       --keyring filename
With this option it is possible to specify a specific keyring file
the command should operate on. The default is that a command is
executed on the trusted.gpg file as well as on all parts in the
trusted.gpg.d directory, through trusted.gpg is the primary keyring
i'll push that fix and we'll see what happens
:P
... later :P
@Marco thanks for testing that... i now know generally where the issue is

no problem

7:14 PM
i'll have to test-debug on both a Natty and Lucid machine
and if it works on those, i'll push it to those
what other versions do I use in the PPa...

I think I finally fixed the kernel compile issue

PPA*
orly?
what was your issue
aw damn its got maverick included in the PPAs...
grumbles
since its a bash script it should be backwards-compatible right?

OpenVZ doesn't support selinux, devramfs, and a few other options that are enforced in the 2.6.32-33.72 kernel
so I'm just going to not have enforcer enforce them :P

@TheEvilPhoenix should be

7:16 PM
the only thing i need to watch is the compatbile packages...
i think i specified >= in the control files...
rather than just the package names...
i'll have to recover the data from my other system...
the one which died...
holy crud...

@JorgeCastro haha, yeah, i know that feeling :D

7:58 PM
Woo, now I'm down to just code errors

The SE podcast will be live in a minute, if you're interested :-)
(with Miguel De Icaza of Mono fame)

8:31 PM
@JorgeCastro people are saying they get a 404 on this link: launchpad.net/~ubuntu-font-beta-testing
should I notify anybody? do you have an idea what's going on?

@StefanoPalazzo I also get a 404

that's really weird, that it should work for some people but not others

i'm in :P

but i'm part of that team
> You are not a member of this team.
or not :D
sorry for the noise :)

8:35 PM
uh. what?
that makes some sense, OMG! just posted the wrong link maybe?

i only know that i got the monospace font via that page, but still - i can see the other page
maybe you need to be a member of the second team to access the first one?
hm, why isn't light... light?

9:02 PM
@htorque light is the new bold
That's ubuntu thinking

what a light move! :P

9:40 PM
@StefanoPalazzo the ~ubuntu-font-beta-testing team is private, so only some people can see it

How can I force Ubuntu to boot on a stuck boot menu? http://bit.ly/ppkRjJ #server

@ajmitch OMG linked to that page, but it seems you can only join via ~ubuntu-typeface-interest
well, that's also written on the ~ubuntu-font-beta-testing team page, but since people cannot access it... :)

@htorque right :)
I think ubuntu members can see ~ubuntu-font-beta-testing
at least I can, though I'm not a team member

good night, everyone!

10:27 PM
@MarcoCeppi still around?
i'm going to push up some code to the 2.0 version of that script and i'd like ya to grab it from bzr and test it, if you could
using any PGP code, even if you'd like to use one of my test keys or even one of my old ones
