9:00 PM

@jrg: yeah, scrolling down quickly does a visual trick

jrg
@BadLearner Awesome isn't it?

yeah... I don't understand how they draw with text, like that
probably never will

@MarcoCeppi I am dumb, where in your charm do you fetch the steam binary?

@JorgeCastro It's done via hldsupdatetool
in the install

9:06 PM
@jrg: any clue? Is it even possible

Q: How to install an app via Ubuntu Software Center AND visualize those commands in terminal?

Bad LearnerI just dipped my toes into Linux, and as obvious as it should be, I am starting with Ubuntu as it makes life easier for starters. I believe, the best way to get a grip over command line is to use it for all day-to-day activities - - like app installation, copying, moving and deleting files etc. ...

does chrome keep and archive of releases?

jrg
@BrunoPereira what do you mean?
@BadLearner i'm reading right now.

sure

@JorgeCastro: You mean the thinkup instance should just install Postfix?

yeah

9:07 PM
And no, it doesn't need to receive email.

and then just pass it a config to send mail

@jrg If I want to install a previous version of chrome that is not the current one, can I download it?

Okay, I'll add that.

ah perfect, that should be easy
(check the bug, he gave you a few options in there)

@JorgeCastro how does one sign up for the juju class?

9:08 PM
Oh, okay.

@BrunoPereira just show up in IRC.
I need to fix the instructions on the wiki

jrg
@BrunoPereira chrome, no. chromium, you can get it from the PPA.

@JorgeCastro sounds cool
@jrg yeah figured that out :(

9:09 PM
anyone has an old version laying in their apt cache?

jrg
@BrunoPereira let me check...
nope.

@MarcoCeppi see my post on the mailing list, there's a reason I asked for that, heh

Interesting idea

@BrunoPereira apt cache? If you don't mind, where's it located?
(I'm new to Linux)

jrg
@BrunoPereira I have google-chrome-stable_15.0.874.120-r108895_i386.deb
and that's it.

9:18 PM
speeeeeeeeeeeeed
I shouldn't listen to prodigy before bedtime
or after

jrg
@BrunoPereira want it?

im so full of extra energy!
SPEEEEEEEEEEEEED

@jrg yeah, need a public ftp or can you find another method for me to get it?

jrg
I have a way.
let me scp it to my server

@MarcoCeppi: do we have steam client for linux?
sorry just woke up didn't look at all the chat before :P

9:25 PM
@wisemonkey I've heard of a competitor named Desura that just came out.

@wisemonkey this is the Steam server client

Is there any way to create unity launchers that launch their application into their own icon? I don't like to click on my office icon and have another icon appear because it runs in Java...

I'm working on writing a charm for it
Steam's had linux server clients out since day one IIRC

ohh
yea I know I thought actual desktop client as well :(

@wisemonkey Soon, from what I've heard

9:26 PM
@WarriorIng64 yup playing with desura since y'day pretty neat if u ask me

@MarcoCeppi But I thought Steam for Linux was cancelled...? Or did they change their minds?

@MarcoCeppi yey I'll be looking forward to :D

jrg

@GeorgeEdison: ohh well then I've no idea just hope it turns out to be only guest issue ;)

Yeah.

9:30 PM
@jrg no access

jrg
it's a 404?
or a 403 forbidden?

didn't change the permissions of parent directory?

jrg
nope, /var/www works fine.

I think something other than that -- no server found

jrg
bjmdw.dyndns.org:88 - that work?

9:31 PM
check the name Server not found

Firefox can't find the server at bjmdw.dyndns.org%3a88.
yup
: was replaced by %3a

jrg
@BrunoPereira ^^ that work?

@jrg yeah

jrg
@BrunoPereira ok, congrats. you've got an outdated version of chrome. :)

@jrg im crying inside of joy!

jrg
:D
so, a few of you are using mozilla nightly... :P
goes log snooping
and then @GeorgeEdison went and downloaded it - his windows NT user agent string is very uh..... distinctive? :P

9:35 PM
Can anyone tell me how to go about easily getting the FF nightly

jrg
@rlemon use the PPA.

hmm through ppa or through download?

jrg
and now wget was just snoopin' around. :P

@rlemon: if u want to keep stable version and try nightly then download tar.gz untar it and directly use

@jrg I bet it is :P

9:37 PM
I swear I sopped visiting u @jrg :P

jrg
@GeorgeEdison lol. :P

@wisemonkey My stable version is not so stable. FF 7.0.1 - Lags like a Buick on animations and flash

@jrg do oyu know how to combine unity launcher icons with their launched companions?

also switching tabs doesn't like me

jrg
@Greg nope.
it's actually a bug.

9:38 PM
@rlemon: today morning got an update for 8 but I didn't have problem with 7 while having around 47 tabs open
in 6 different windows (or watever they call it)

@JorgeCastro: I know this is a bit of a change... but can I use sendmail instead of postfix?

@wisemonkey Windows had no problems for me.. Ubuntu + FF doesn't like me. I thought it may have something to do with hardware and not having enough RAM ect.. however Chromium runs like nobodys business

@GeorgeEdison postfix provides a sendmail binary

I have like 3 chrome windows open now each with 10-15 tabs.... no lag

Oh... I am confused?
(Wait - I am confused.)

9:40 PM
@rlemon: have some experimental window manager?

So postfix is just a package that provides sendmail?

yeah

or just check the output for 'top'

I see.
Never mind then :)
@JorgeCastro: How do I install postfix noninteractively?
The package asks a bunch of questions during installation.

that's what I am investigating for you

9:42 PM
@wisemonkey what do you mean?

3
Q: Automate the installation of postfix on Ubuntu

sutchMy system configuration script does an "apt-get install -y postfix". Unfortunately the script is halted when the postfix installer displays a configuration screen. Is there a method to force postfix to use the defaults during installation so that an automated script can continue to the end? Do...

come one man, stay in network! :)

@rlemon: if u r using standard window manager (like gtk 3 -- I maybe wrong with names) or something experimental for supporting themes and all. if everything is standard then start FF and issue a command 'top' and see if its some component of FF thats eating resources or something else

@JorgeCastro I'll give it an upvote then.
I'll reboot the VM and give it a try.

@wisemonkey ahh cool. was wondering what the linux equiv to task manager and process manager was

9:47 PM
:) welcome

yea it looks ok mem wise... a little high but nothing out of the ordinary

for the win install htop
2
if you like nice features, like scrolling!

i think i'll just upgrade FF
I don't need no stinkin scrolling!

@rlemon cool and keep terminal on top and try switching tabs playing flash etc
@jrg how do u look at server logs?
/var/log ?
or something else?

jrg
@wisemonkey i do a tail -f /var/.log/apache2/access.log
runs on one screen window on my server.
all the time.
since nobody should ever be looking at it, except for me, clients and people like Bruno who I upload files for. :P

9:52 PM
ok lemme try :) btw any small tutorial how to check for security of server
and same here :P

jrg
no idea, not sure there is such a thing as a "secure server",
just a "not as easily crackable one"

well seems google bot visits me :P

jrg
our friend the google bot does like it.

haha I'm sure there is no such thing as secure server but trying to understand few things about administration

jrg
@wisemonkey run on a non-standard port if you can.
that'll fix 90% of your problems right there.
(hence my port 88)

9:55 PM
Does anyone know how to make a unity launcher that launches into its own icon, rather than creating a separate icon?

hmm ok so if I've non standard port but proper apache config then still can use same name to point to it right?

jrg
well, the problem with nonstandard (read: anything other than 80) ports is this
heading to domainname.com doesn't send a request to domainname.com:8000

@Greg: right click on icon and click stay in launcher

jrg
it sends it to domainname.com:80

@wisemonkey this keeps the icon in the launcher, but clicking it when not open does nothing

9:57 PM
yes but lemme see I think I've seen something
@Greg hmm I'm on gnome-shell right now but I get what u mean and I think right clicked on icon and there was some relevant option

@wisemonkey there is, and it works for standard native applications ... but apps that are running in Java (eclipse, netbeans) or apps loaded through wine do not behave - they create their own "active" icon

ohh well then no idea
@jrg: how about if I change <VirtualHost *:80> in site-available to <VirtualHost *:88>
?
I don't understand much about web site hosting :-/

jrg
doesn't help you much... unfortunately.

dang

jrg
so my suggestion is impractical for most people, but when it can be done, it helps.

10:03 PM
hmm

what's the problem?

jrg
he's trying to make his apache "secure".

@MarcoCeppi: I'm trying to understand web hosting a bit

jrg
heh, Marco is our local apache guru. he's running his own hosting company. :P

ohh nice I think I'll bug him :)

jrg
10:07 PM
I do not approve of this message, but go ahead. ;P

What questions do you have?

@MarcoCeppi: so I don't know anything about security at all but I've hosted 2 websites using site-available and sites-enabled folders on same port
I was thinking of looking into security a bit so jrg suggested using another port but then websites can't be directed by name right?
well I don't mind even if its not secure enough I just want to know how to look/trace in activity that is directed towards server

@wisemonkey Ports aren't going to change security much, and like you've noticed, you'll have to reference sites on non-standard ports with domain.tld:port
You'll want to setup access logs for activity per website
So, in each virtual host of the sites I host there's a line like this:

jrg
ttw

  CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/access.log combined
?
this one?

10:12 PM
CustomLog /home/marco/domains/marcoceppi.com/logs/access.log combined

ok cool

Yeah, except each domain's logs are stored independently, so you can do activity on a per-site basis

jrg
^^ which is nice.

hmm can I change the location say to /home/usr/site/log/ ?

jrg
yup.

10:13 PM
and site content is actually in /var/www
ok

jrg
you can change it to whatever you want, as long as you have permissions for it.

@wisemonkey yes and no

and how about keeping content in /var/www/ but creating user directories in there with user permissions?

You might have to do some extra leg work to get it working outside of /var/www, especially with php
@wisemonkey I've documented my server's infrastructure here:
14
A: What is the best way to add files to a website on a LAMP Server?

Marco CeppiEvery setup is different. For me I have a lot of users on a server that each hosts websites, for you, you likely won't need to create more than just one user on the system. However, if you manage multiple websites on this server this setup will help you to manage, configure, and debug each domain...

awesome I'll go through it

10:15 PM
It's a lot to digest, but it allows you to run user specific stuff in home folders without having to use the www-data user

@JorgeCastro I've been seeing you metioned htop a lot recently; what's the scoop? (I'm interested)

jrg
@RolandTaylor htop hit 1.0, and it's awesome.

what do you mean?
install it and try it

I'll let u know in some time about http access, I've opened ssh port for server as well. Do I need any specifics for ssh?

it's awesome

10:16 PM
:P
more awesome than regular top?

@wisemonkey Disable clear-text passwords and only use key-based authentication <3

jrg
only thing i've ever done with ssh. :D

@jrg i c
Nice!

jrg
@RolandTaylor ok, so here we are. you can view the command, the user, the uptime, the CPU usage, the ram, etc.

10:18 PM
does it support sorting and shortcuts?

jrg
it's like top, kill and a bunch of other stuff COMBINED INTO AWESOMENESS.
yup.

@MarcoCeppi: how do I check which one do I've? and How do I switch on key based auth?

(sorting as in, sort by mem usage, etc)
sweet :D
installing
done!

jrg
@RolandTaylor install it, and then play with it.

@wisemonkey You'll need to create an SSH key. If you log in to your server with a password in SSH you're using plain text

10:19 PM
yup then I'm using plain text

jrg
@RolandTaylor it's been on my must-have list since well, forever.

reason I asked so much is that I'm trying to keep the nc8000 on a diet till it gets a bigger hdd
it's only got 60GB, and I've got 17.4 free O.o

@MarcoCeppi I'll check on SSH key later right now will read about webserver fix it then SSH Thanks :)

This is awesome!

Q: How can I set up password-less SSH login?

OxwiviI want to be able to login to a remote via ssh without having to enter the password all the time. How do I set it up? Is a different command required to execute a password-less session?

10:21 PM
hmmm
firefox 11 has multiple processes O.o

jrg
@RolandTaylor pong, posted screenshots in the 2buntu room.

electrolysis finally paying off?

jrg
@MarcoCeppi Much better. :D
don't link to dupes! :P

My bad! :D

@RolandTaylor: same as chrome? would be better to kill particular page

10:24 PM
I've just been playing around trying to create a cool gmail launcher icon, and this is what I've come up with:

remind me, guys. the /review link is available to everyone, right?

Oli
Almost. As soon as you get your downvote priv IIRC (125 rep)

jrg
@Greg oh, you're playing with that?

okay cool

10:25 PM
@wisemonkey I have to verify it

jrg
could have told me, i would have linked you to that.... :P

jrg
@Greg yup, that's an awesome hack isn't it?

@jrg yeah, look how the icon is highlighted in the launcher - but when I choose "Compose new" instead of the primary action, it treats the launched app as a new instance of chromium ... even though the only difference is #compose in the -app url

jrg
10:28 PM
@Greg shouldn't do that...
i think that's part of the old bug

is there a fix for this bug?

jrg
no fix for the bug yet, afaik
let me look it up

@jrg there must be a workaround... maybe my .desktop is wrong?

jrg

Q: How can I make Chromium app windows count as "their own application" in the Unity launcher?

AlexanderI'm trying to add a Chromium app window (chromium-browser --app=http://example.org) to the launcher. I've put together a .desktop file and it works, but all instances of Chromium get lumped together. If I've got a normal browser window already running, the app will be listed with Chromium. If I s...

On my classic desktop panel, i have 2 webapps launchers in the gnome-panel. Basically, they are just "chromium-browser --app=http://some.web.site --some-other-flags ..." + a nice icon Chromium is my default browser. In the new unity based desktop mode, those webapps now appear nicely. The problem is that when i start my default web browser, unity highlights on the left one of my webapp launchers, instead of creating one for the browser itself. And worse.. once the browser is running, i can't start this webapp anymore as unity keeps raising the main browser instead. For the other webapp, it works as expected. ii libunity-misc0 0.1.1-0ubuntu3 Miscellaneous functions for Unity - shared library ii libunity0 0.2.46-0ubuntu5 binding to get places into the launcher - shared library ii libunity3 3.2.8-0ubuntu1 binding to get places into the launcher - shared library ii unity 3.2.8-0ubuntu1
unity
Medium / Confirmed

@jrg yes, it does work like that - and that post is where I got the idea to do this... but my problem is with the "compose" and "contacts" shortcut groups ... I don't think this problem is chromium-specific

10:33 PM
yey added ssh-key I need to tell all my users that they should add it :)

@wisemonkey I would make it a requirement :)

hehe can I force it?

With no clear-text passwords someone will have to physically have the private key to get into the server

jrg
@Greg nope, it's chromium specific - i've got no problem using any of the other quicklists that do stuff like that.
@wisemonkey i <3 my ssh key
at this point, they need two pieces of info to get into my server:

@wisemonkey Yeah, you can disable plain-text passwords. So users will either have to set it up before you turn of plain-text passwords or send you their public key to be added to the server after it's cut off if they want access :)

jrg
10:34 PM
my ssh key

yup so its basically for that particular machine to log in to server if I change machine I need to create new pair

@jrg have a look at my .desktop: pastie.org/2905954

jrg
and the passphrase for my ssh key.

@wisemonkey Not nessisarily

yup I added passphrase as well :D

10:35 PM
You just need to use ssh-copy-id on the new server

ohh nice :)

All that does is copy your public key to the remote server

jrg
@Greg dont' see anything wrong with it..

I have about 15 different SSH keys

awesome and whoa :-o

10:36 PM
I create them and go through them like candy

jrg
i have three keys. :P

lol I created one and felt good about it
:P

jrg
ok, five if you count the two keys for ec2, but those two will get destroyed once i'm done with this project.

\o/

ok next step -- how to force users to use ssh key ? and I'm planning to copy the question link to evernote is link going to be valid even after few years?

jrg
10:38 PM
@wisemonkey link will be valid.
as long as SE is around.
and they don't seem to be going anywhere.

ok good :)

Ask Ubuntu on Google+ (for real this time) :)
11

jrg
yay!

added to following :D

jrg
I HAVE CIRCLED IT FOR REALZ!

10:40 PM
I'm still figuring out how to use it

lol

it's not perfect :)

anyways back later gotta get some work done :)
will be back while setting up webserver ;)

@jrg it's not only chromium ... this has the same problem for me: askubuntu.com/q/35523/5995

jrg
@Greg well, that's supposed to do that.

10:43 PM
single clicking the icon launches it correctly, and highlights the icon - and I can get back to the launched application by single clicking the icon again

jrg
i think you're looking to change the current URL of a chrome session with yours, right?

but clicking on a context option doesn't treat the launched application as "one of itself" - it places another terminal icon at the bottom of the list
@jrg the session may not exist yet

Q: What should be posted on Ask Ubuntu's Google+ page?

Stefano PalazzoWe've set up +Ask Ubuntu! Now we need your feedback about what to post on it. Would you like top questions? What criteria? Anything else? Or can you think of a better way to gather and review posts for the AU page?

jrg
Hm

@StefanoPalazzo You found the owner of the page?

10:46 PM
@GeorgeEdison no, unfortunately not. but we could just set up a new page

jrg
YEAAAHHH!
Doom 3 source released... https://github.com/TTimo/doom3.gpl

What is a Google+ page for?

@Greg hopefully, the AU page will sprinkle your steam with the most interesting stuff on AU, from time to time. :)

Like the twitter feed, but smarter
6

what's the difference with my having a Google+ page and me just using Google+ ?
ignorant to Google+ - has no friends on it :(

10:48 PM
@StefanoPalazzo Could we contact Google and make them turn it over to us?
If a member of the SE team contacted them, that would make a difference.

We'll get that sorted out quickly I'm sure.

@GeorgeEdison We're working on that ATM

I see.
Did you see my comment on the post?

Did you see mine :)

jrg
Did you see mine? :)

10:53 PM
I have now.

If you're wondering what we're up to, we're on Trello
8

I noticed.
I really want to automate something on the G+ page :)
(I'm an automation freak.)
