@OctavianDamiean however, since we have dates for the other events now I won't complain if you update all the ads for those events

@htorque the new IRC weeks have been added to the calendar if you want to update your ads
@StefanoPalazzo ditto your ads

6:18 PM
@JorgeCastro can I create a duplicate of askubuntu.com/questions/67156/… where the error is not the same as the post?
(hello)

hi
instead of "gives error"
be more specific in the title

@JorgeCastro I talked to someone in IRC about an SMTP charm.
...and they mentioned something about using debconf to create one for postfix.
Does that sound like something feasible?

jrg
dang.

jrg
6:30 PM
why what?

Why is that so bad?

jrg
not bad.
just surprising.

Oh, okay.

jrg
i mean, it's a funky badge name...

Man is the Launchpad build queue ever long.
It will be many hours before any of my stuff builds.

6:38 PM
@MarcoCeppi around?
@MarcoCeppi I need some ads undeleted, I made updates for them
@GeorgeEdison yeah that sounds awesome

Well, I meant... do you think it's something I am capable of doing?

jrg
Ugh. there is a fix for a bug that is all over the site, but it requires a PPA. . .
i hereby cringe.

@GeorgeEdison oh sure, it's not hard, you just pipe an answer to debconf
maybe an existing charm has that?
let me dig

6:55 PM
@JorgeCastro the log for what is happening in the background, where do I get it?

George just posted that one actually

Q: Does Juju store a log of all commands run and their output for each unit?

George EdisonSometimes when deploying a service (and more specifically a new unit) for a Juju charm, an error occurs and there seems to be no way of finding out exactly what it was. Is there some sort of output log of all commands the unit ran?

brilliant ;)

jrg
hey, did i do a good enough job with making sure it's clear there is a third-party ppa involved with this?
1
A: How do I enable my synaptics touchpad in Ubuntu 11.10?

jrgNote, this involved adding a third-party PPA - proceed with caution. First, make sure we're both experiencing the same problem. Run the following in a terminal: cat /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf You should see something like the following: Section "InputClass" Ident...

Make it bigger!

jrg
h1 big enough? :P

7:01 PM
More like this.

@JorgeCastro You missed something in your blog post ...

ubuntu is in the domain name

jrg

Q: WIll my programs installed in Ubuntu be usable by another distro in a dual-boot set-up?

Brian DantI am interested in setting up my machine so that I can try different distributions of Linux. I want to always be running Ubuntu (10.04.3), but would then try other distros in a dual-boot setting. Since the file hierarchy will be similar, I am wondering if the programs that I install and setti...

jrg
@wisemonkey no way to pay for the bundles...? :S (being underage sucks sometimes)

@jrg ohh yea I hear u :) but frankly growing up sucks as well I hope I can get paid for studying :P

jrg
@wisemonkey haha. :P

I need to seriously think about phds :P

7:46 PM

Q: Why does my display keep turning off every 10 minutes?

George EdisonI have installed Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric) in VirtualBox as well as virtualbox-guest-additions . The display resolution adapts to the size of the window as expected, but the display turns off after 10 minutes of inactivity. Thinking there was some sort of power management issue at play, I went to Po...

jrg
@GeorgeEdison so this oneiric is in a VM?

8:00 PM
Yes.

@MarcoCeppi openweek, global jam, and developer week

@GeorgeEdison: host OS still thinks there was inactivity for 10 minutes?

@wisemonkey Not the host, the guest.

@JorgeCastro done

so ur guest keeps turning off monitor or host? Can u try those settings in both host and guest if u haven't already?

8:06 PM
@wisemonkey No, no... the host is running Windows and is completely independent of the guest.
The guest is Oneiric and turns of the guest display after 10 minutes of inactivity.

jrg
@GeorgeEdison check the virtualbox settings on the host.
it could be controlling it somehow...

VirtualBox?

jrg
yeah

It doesn't have an option for that.
That's supposed to be managed by the guest.
I suppose I could disable ACPI...

jrg
no power management settings host-side?

8:08 PM
For the host OS, you mean?

jrg
no, in virtualbox. i seem to remember something last time I was playing with VB...

My goddamn server pisses me off ...

jrg
@OctavianDamiean your huge dl380?

Does anyone know what apt-get would suddenly say something like this?
Unable to change to (unreachable)// - chdir (2: No such file or directory)
No, it is just a virtual box instance.

man I really butchered those ads

8:10 PM
@jrg Nothing that would shut off the display server.

jrg
@GeorgeEdison ok, out of ideas here.

Yeah, someone posted one though.
I'll see if it works.

holy hell
somoene hacked my gmail
now i have to utilize secured emails
and somehow lock out that gmail

jrg
and your gravatar.

well that's easy to fix
i changed the primary email on here

jrg
8:12 PM
oh....

@ThomasWard First step: change your Gmail password.
By the way, I guess you saw the message earlier?
54 mins ago, by Alvar
thomas ward has a virus on his computer!!!!!!!

yeah i locked out the passcodes

So you should be fine now.

its basically a randomstring from /dev/urandom now
and it was a hacker, @Alvar
i use only linux systems, so the likelihood of a virus is low
hackers, more likely

@ThomasWard wow...

8:15 PM
Yeah, I figured it would probably be someone hacking in.
...also, doesn't Gmail offer IMAP access?

but WHY? :P

Do you have it enabled?

@Alvar not sure
but its now running on a passcode generated by /dev/urandom

so there's almost no way they'd get it

8:16 PM
@GeorgeEdison sign up if you want to come!

@George they do

lame :/

but you have to enable it

do you have a backup email for sending lost passwd?

per user
@Alvar they guessed the code
but didnt change it
so i got in

8:17 PM
hu...

and changed it

cool
and changed..

jrg
@ThomasWard two factor auth is now a must-have for your gmail.

@JorgeCastro Cool! Charm school!

was your code hard to break?

8:19 PM
its a 64char alphanumeric mixed case with symbols passcode
i havent changed it in over 2 years
so someone could have hijacked it

@JorgeCastro "Immutable Page"

that's harder than mine...

jrg
well there's your problem @ThomasWard. . .

hard to re learn...

@jrg dont remind me
i'm alredady pissed enough

jrg
8:20 PM
sorry.

@ThomasWard You should activate the 2-step verification.

@MarcoCeppi ugh, crap, that's right
investigating ....

How can I switch a 32-bit installation to a 64-bit one? http://askubuntu.com/questions/81824/how-can-i-switch-a-32-bit-installation-to-a-64-bit-one

@MarcoCeppi: The Trello interface is slow... but other than that, I like it.

it's slow when boards get large
but day to day seems fine

8:26 PM
@MarcoCeppi Acknowledged your now standing... how are ya

@OctavianDamiean yeah just did that
@OctavianDamiean will that revoke any other systems from accessing?
or do i still need to contact google for that?

jrg
@ThomasWard yup

given that i changed the passcodes

jrg
it'll revoke everything else.

8:28 PM
ah good
that should help :P

@rlemon Ready to help with Apache

@MarcoCeppi I think I have the pdo_mysql package installed.
@MarcoCeppi is there an easy way to check? (clearly it is not working correctly)

Yeah, with dpkg
dpkg --get-selections | grep pdo

rdl@rdl-ubuntu-work:/etc/php5/apache2$ dpkg --get-selections | grep pdo
ifupdown					install
i assume then this is telling me no
(sorry I am learning)

@rlemon Correct, it's not installed
well...
what does dpkg --get-selections | grep php5 produce?

8:38 PM
libapache2-mod-php5				install
php5-cli					install
php5-common					install
php5-gd						install
php5-mcrypt					install
php5-mysql					install

The unity launcher is a little confusing ... is there a tool to create launchers, because dragging onto it doesn't always work if you're using a Java-based app, or an app through Wine, etc.

all of the 'tutorials' say use sudo pecl install pdo
do I need PEAR for PDO
or can I just get PDO

I hate down-voting (yeah yeah I know my stats say the otherwise)... Is there not a better way to tell user "this words that make up this sentence written by you kinda... suck"?

@rlemon Doesn't phpinfo() tell you what PDO packages are installed?

This book, I don't know if you can call it a book is awesome!

8:41 PM
@Greg at this point i assume none.. however a quick search on the phpinfo page listed:
PDO

PDO support	enabled
PDO drivers	mysql
Additional .ini files parsed /etc/php5/apache2/conf.d/gd.ini, /etc/php5/apache2/conf.d/mcrypt.ini, /etc/php5/apache2/conf.d/mysql.ini, /etc/php5/apache2/conf.d/mysqli.ini, /etc/php5/apache2/conf.d/pdo.ini, /etc/php5/apache2/conf.d/pdo_mysql.ini

@rlemon pecl and pear are two different things, but IIRC pdo should be in a package
@rlemon I think the PDO driver comes with the php5-mysql package

I should have installed it from scratch. I used tasksel to install apache php5 mysql

@MarcoCeppi it does

@rlemon I disagree with that statement :)
What makes you think the PDO driver isn't working?

@MarcoCeppi trying to connect to the DB with PDO and nothing but errors.

8:45 PM
Example error?

yea nevermind.. all of this was for not.
I was working from www/www/ and displaying www/
ugh FML
was all like I CHANGE U Y U NO CHANGED!!!! ohh, i'm a moron
my bad
at least I now know about sudo apt-cache search term

@alvar has the email spam stopped?

@ThomasWard I only got 1 email :P
so yes :)

:P
you're fortunate
others got it worse
so i'm still dealing with the fallouts :/

ouch..
I'm a Linux user I am fortunate by nature...
o yeah prodigy...

8:54 PM
@GeorgeEdison hey so mark and I were thinking

Q: Automate Postfix instalaltion with debconf-set-selections?

Pierre DennertI'm currently trying to automate my Postfix installation and most things work really... but I can't seem to stop postfix-policyd asking for the MySQL root password. Here is what I got so far: echo 'dbconfig-common postfix-policyd/dbconfig-install boolean false' | debconf-set-selections ...

you can just use debconf to set postfix to send mail
does it need to receive mail too?

Guys, is there a way to know what commands the Ubuntu Software Center is issuing when installing a specific app?
I explained it in detail here...
0
Q: How to install an app via Ubuntu Software Center AND visualize those commands in terminal?

Bad LearnerI just dipped my toes into Linux, and as obvious as it should be, I am starting with Ubuntu as it makes life easier for starters. I believe, the best way to get a grip over command line is to use it for all day-to-day activities - - like app installation, copying, moving and deleting files etc. ...
