12:01 AM
my friend's S3 mini, 480p, it is cramped but it works okay enough
I mean I could redo the high score board, ahh

Pip
I have found such a good song
Today's Listening: Partyt R Igng
Such an odd name, but so good

ah feck it I'll try redoing the scoreboard :D

Try the new gui stuff :P

like atm, bottom buttons over lap but mehhhh, on higher resolutions they don't overlap, they're transparent anyway haha

can't tell

12:06 AM
... Its fine! Cant tell either

yeah it's good enough eh.
but yeah high score next
cuz
too wide, too tall
I ended up cheating with the menus recently, the right-panel text, that's the new UI.Text component, so I could use the text wrapping it has
rest is GUIText / GUITextures though still
/lazy

Chris did u make all the art?

yeah

Nice

This is a cool animation tip - reddit.com/r/gamedev/comments/334d02/…

12:19 AM
aye

12:49 AM
@SpartanDonut so you're in a game; you playin another with wakka after, or should I wait?

no clue
just play some without me

haha ok

1:32 AM
alright that'll do, time to build and upload
need to submit new version to apple too, and do the steam thing, and drm-free versions
lalala

1:50 AM
i want to learn game development using directx which one should buy .... frank luna's directx 11 version or 12? If i buy 12 will it cover later versions as well or basic history sort of thing.

http://www.amazon.com/Introduction-Programming-DirectX-Computer-Science/dp/1942270062

http://www.amazon.in/Introduction-3D-Game-Programming-Directx/dp/1936420228
hey if one has played watch dogs...i want to ask a simple question how all cameras of city are connected to each other and basically how we can hack any electronic device with just camera? What algorithm they have used?

have you done any game dev yet?

2:10 AM
@Almo ready freddy

ok
@SpartanDonut invited

@Almo no i am starting with it

Let me recommend you do not start with DirectX game dev
there are a ton of things you need to know before you start worrying about all that stuff

Do you want to learn DirectX or do you want to make games?

and i have been told by game devs that don't cram the Directx syntax use this book

2:11 AM
Ultimate question here

he explained everything with maths logics

@androidplusios.design I've been a professional game programmer since 2000 and I don't know one bit of DirectX.

But i am good with maths: vector, and other stuff. Also i am confortable with c++

You're better off learning the fundamentals of game architecture and programming before you deal with 3d stuff
like how game loops work, how to organize your data, how to get input from the user, how to deal with framerate
you want all these things understood before you worry about 3d collision detection and stuff like that

I have done game development in python using pygame

2:14 AM
Spartan's question is the important thing here

you said a minute ago you were "starting with it"

if you want to make a game framework or other gamedev tools, learning directx is great. if you want to make a game...don't bother with directx.

^

@Almo but that's just cramming the syntax it good a pirated version of this book to get glance over it ..... it has explained everything so well that. I feel like purchasing it. What do you suggest?

I suggest ignoring DirectX
like if you want to make a 3d game, get Unity's personal version and make one.
or Unreal if you want a more stout but harder-to-learn engine.

2:16 AM
I really need to learn Unreal xD

@IcyDefiance yes thats what i want to do low level work...not every prefer low level details coz its generally hard and time consuming so want to do that

I've spent a lot of time with OpenGL because I like making tools. I like optimizing a single class for 3 weeks and stupid shit like that. But I've spent well over a year making a game framework and it's barely good enough to make solitaire with.

@Almo i am not good with C sharp and javascript...only use javascript for web development(DOM)

when you're that low level everything takes a lot of work

if you want to make a game and start with DirectX, you won't make a game
if you know C++, working with C# will be cake

2:17 AM
you're not gonna do the job better than Unity either even if you put half a decade into it

it's really not hard.

I love cake

@Almo if some one want to develop game framework or other gamedev tools then its great? May be getting a job at unity and not develop games :)

2:40 AM
well i still wouldn't go for directx
ties you to microsoft

yaa @Almo that's what i wanted to say better support :)

2:58 AM
@androidplusios.design we asked you and you didn't tell us which you were interested in. it's up to you to give us the info we need to give you advice

but I told you :( I want to develop game engines and at the same time i want to develop game( just for fun...part time )

http://www.microsoftvirtualacademy.com/training-courses/introduction-to-c-and-directx-game-development-jump-start
@Almo

@androidplusios.design that's not what I saw. I saw spartan ask you which you wanted to do, and I see no answer to that question

I didn't get it what do you mean by which? Do you you want me to pick one exact thing? b/w game development or engine designer ? :(
are you there? @almo

Spartan's question was "do you want to make a game or an engine" because if you want to make a game, don't start with DirectX because you don't need to use DirectX to make a game.
in fact, if you try, you'll get bogged down in 3d shit and never make a game
if you want to make an engine or a tool, then maybe it makes sense, but I'd still say starting with DirectX is not the best idea, since it ties you to microsoft.
that's it really
@SpartanDonut today's simple Pathery... seems obvious, but is not.

ok I want to make game engines people say don't use directx ....use openGL
but i asked one of the directx developer teaching at microsoft virtual academy and he told me that both got there own strengths and weakness. Also, I see almost every good game for pc is written in directx.......from open world grand theft auto games to car racing gamers i.e. nfs . They choose directx technology
@almo
that's enough to attack a noob to start learning directx instead of opengl
atlease he will be programming for something that people actually se
se * use

3:14 AM
@androidplusios.design The biggest game in the world is League of Legends, and I don't think it uses DirectX.
EVE-Online is the MMO with the largest population in one universe, and they're stuck using Transgaming's Cider tech to get on Mac because it's built with DirectX.
there are other considerations
since OpenGL works across platforms, it's less headaches if your engine is to be cross-platform
given Unity and Unreal are crossplatform, it's kind of a given that devs expect engines to be so.
tieing yourself to MS makes this harder

also OpenGL is just for graphics and directx packs everything into one....audio & graphics.

ok, you're deterimined to use DirectX. Go ahead.

no you suggest me....i would pick what you say but give some solid point

if you wanna learn DirectX, learn DirectX.
if you wanna use an existing engine like Unity or Unreal, do that.
if you eventually want to make your own engine, go for it, lots to learn and try

@Chris any suggestion from you side besides just lots of if conditions ... personnel

3:23 AM
well, my gamedev experience is with Unity. I never desired to learn engine dev, wasn't (and still isn't) my idea of how I want to spend my time with life :p

how much time does it take for a noob to learn unity create his/her first game?
I know there are very good tutorials for it unity's site

I toyed with Unity over two years, prototyping, learning.
then spent one more year and made a game, got on Steam, and right now finishing up an iOS and Android version
now, if I were to try and create an engine instead of making a game, I'd probably have given up

can you give me link to you game ?

@Chris
that game is really good
nicely done music

3:26 AM
so I guess with your original question, you want to learn DirectX for game development, I read it as learning engine development, not so much game development. I mean, you'll get there if you stick with it, sure, not impossible, just gotta check with yourself what your goals are :)
hah thank you

what language you choose ? Javascript or C#
?

it's done with UnityScript mostly, though looking back I wish I'd learned C# from the start

can i choose javascript. I also develop websites as a hobby thing. I would not have to learn lot of new syntax if I choose javascript

you can choose UnityScript, yeah, that's how I got into it tbh. lots of web/javascript experience, so it felt right at home.
however, UnityScript compiles really slowly compared to C#, cuts down on my dev and testing time, sucks
but..... still works, just compiles slower than C# is all

you game is very nice in terms of graphics and sound....you created all that on your own? :(

3:31 AM
thanks, yep, all me

I was thinking of game racing....basically cart racing game in some indian village. What do you think? Its that nice idea? Basically India is a nice location to develop game.....Far Cry 4 did that. There's a lot of weird things people haven't seen about India which would attract gamers :)

go for it

the biggest piece of advice is probably to watch out for analysis paralysis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analysis_paralysis
stalling yourself, getting caught up in over-thinking and over-worrying about your plans of action
if you come up with an idea, it's a good idea until proven otherwise, and the only way to find that out is to implement it really. even if you don't stick with it or keep it in the end, you'll learn from the experience

3:48 AM
second biggest piece of advice (in my opinion) is to start high level and work down
even if you want to make an engine, you need to know how other engines work first, so you know what to make

yay, Nintendo sent me a double CD set of Smash Bros music. my optical drive has a purpose

hehe nice

:D ty man.

6:58 AM
morning

ning!

@BlueBug that looks like fun!

"Chicken Hunt" it is! :D Coming soon late 2015 . Ty man <3

but the chicken hunt you, it seems

aye.. .and I got killed by chicken at the end.

7:06 AM
what's the ultimate goal?

the ultimate goal is to die, like Tetris it gets more difficult, is what I have in my mind.

that animated gif is mesmerizing really...
any weapon upgrades or something like an egg (shield)?

aye aye, weapon upgrades do exist. But upgrades are mostly temporary, they have certain "rounds" to fire (something like MetalGearSlug).
or... you could have permanent upgrades, like damage upgrade... Just like in original BoI (this, I still can't decide)

Keep it up! Try different approaches to altering the gameplay until it feels right. Might also be fun with sokoban-like movable obstacles

:D aye! ty for the cheer.

7:14 AM
I could look at that all day

you will have a free copy of this game once it's done! free for all the people on GDSE. freeeeeee~eeee (but there will be crystals to purchase)

what platform?

Android.

perfect
already have a price in mind for non-gdse people?

actually... I was thinking of having just for free.
Have you played Crossy Road? @Christoph The game lets you earn in-game currency by watching ad. And the items you purchase are purely cosmetic.

7:27 AM
no haven't played it

GDSE people will be given code that they can use to unlock 100 Cakes(name of the currency in my game)
100 Cakes will get you a nice particle following cosmetic hat. The game will take a picture of your character the moment your character dies then ask you to upload it on facebook to share.
You will be able to show off to your friends how shiny and cool your particle hat is ; )

8:05 AM
@Chris What if the camera was following the player slowly? such as it would only move if the player neared the edge of the screen :P

nah I'm done trying that

Alright :)

1 hour later…
9:28 AM
I'm still looking for an answer to this (poorly worded) question:
0
Q: Calculations for a camera system

LokkijI am building an interactive application in Starling for which a camera system is required. Since there is no existing camera system in flash and the addons for starling do not meet our requirements, I am writing my own. Basically, it moves and scales all assets depending on the position of the c...

9:42 AM
Faking 3D from 2D sprites or something?

10:01 AM
Kinda, yeah
Well not really
Parallax 'n stuff

Jon
@Lokkij the general way to fix this
is to set the pivot points to the center of the objects

And then?

Jon
zoom... zoom to your hearts content
wtf...
Filezilla is riddled with crapware now

But I want to zoom towards an arbitrary point on the screen

Jon
i spit on filezilla.
in that case @Lokkij, you would need to translate your screen center to that point, zoom, and then reset the tranlation

10:12 AM
Has visual studio express been renamed to community?

Jon
yes. and no
they added all the pro features to community. its a beefed up express.

:o For trial only?

Jon
eh, its free
microsoft said, if you can't beat them down to a pile a puke and get them to join you.. then join them

So why buy the studio then?

Jon
teams of 4+

10:14 AM
exactly

Ahh
Nice.

Jon
as soon as you are in a company, you need to pay basically

For C# should I get 2014 or 2015?

Jon
free for you, you lone wolf
2015

10:15 AM
@Jon If I understand that correctly, it is not possible in Starling :(

Jon
so if anyone wants to download filezilla without the crap software they seemingly force upon you now
there is the dev dump
@Lokkij do you use any type of view transforms?
or, how do you draw each individual sprite?

Why is Visual Studio Ultimate with MSDN so expensive...... O_o

Jon
because they actually provide support with MSDN
you have 5 support calls or something like that
plus some other bonuses

A day? Lol

Jon
no, a year
wrong link

10:18 AM
$6,119.00 USD new
$2,569.00 USD renewal

@Jon I.. don't think so? This method is called to update each layer's position.

Jon
our work is still on VS2012
costs us a fortune to upgrade.

Yes, lol

Jon
var zPos:Number = Number(this.z - Game.cameraZ);
var scale:Number = Game.focalLength / (Game.focalLength + zPos);
var correctedScale:Number = scale * (1 / (Game.focalLength / (Game.focalLength + this.z)));
this.scaleX = this.scaleY = correctedScale;
this.x = Game.cameraX * scale + this.defaultX * scale;
this.y = Game.cameraY * scale + this.defaultY * scale;
you do this for every sprite?

Yep.

Jon
10:20 AM
that is a pretty s hitty framework

Visual Studio Online? visualstudio.com/en-us/products/… Unlimited free private code repositories

Jon
Yeah, i tried it @Chris
it is neat -- but ultimately, i would never use it for projects, lol

heh. my limited use with VS, kept nagging me to sign into a Microsoft account

@Jon It doesn't have any kind of depth or camera system so I had to implement my own - there's not even any kind of decent camera library for it.

Jon
There is just something wrong with storing source code in the cloud.

10:21 AM
I'll wait with 2015 edition.. Seems like it's not fit for making projects yet, but mainly testing :P

Jon
Don't call it the cloud... call it source control secure servers
2015 is out
@Lokkij sounds like a nightmare.

It is.

"Visual Studio 2015 Preview and .NET 4.6 Preview are for testing and feedback purposes only. This release is unsupported and are not intended for use on production computers, or to create production code. We strongly recommend only installing this release in a virtual machine, or on a computer that is available for reformatting."

Jon
@Lokkij do you have a gif of what it looks like when you zoom it?

But I get paid for working with it, so it's good enough for me. ":P

Jon
10:22 AM
hmmm weird
i've been running 2015 for a year now

@Jon Just zoom to center? Hang on, I'll make one.

In that case I'll get it anyways. Microsoft's website is so shitty...

Might take a while, project is on another machine.

Jon
@Lokkij does the zoom work if you are zooming directly to center?

Yep

Jon
10:24 AM
ok, so all the zip files in that Filezilla dir are broken
and all the installers in the dir have the crapware included
WTF filezilla.. do you want me to use a different ftp client? because this is how you fuck peolpe.

I deleted my Filezilla installer :(
should I backup the folder in Program Files ?

I still have my installer from a couple months ago.

Jon
maybe you can send it to me if this one doesnt' work

@Jon I can't find the express installer, but only the ultimate one..

Jon
i got it
zipped version
no install needed
finally

10:26 AM
Nice

Jon
so liksten to this.. i formatted my pc to get rid of all the shit that was on it right?
Come back.. install some stuff.. decide to install GimpShop which looked pretty promising.

doooooomed
"looks pretty promising"

Jon
Didn't prompt me or anything -- installed like 6 different shitware on my pc

doomed right there

Jon
I was so mad, I just formatted again.. damn what is this world coming to really

10:28 AM
honestly need a virtual machine before installing new things, bloody bloat

Booom

lol > <

Jon
@Chris this is what I am doing now.. VM first
which is a pain in the ass
but damnit.
everything out there is crap

I try hard to only install known tools for my workflow
cuz yeah :(

Jon
I just need a good graphics program

10:29 AM
@Jon Inkscape, paint.net, GIMP

Jon
I used to pirate photoshop, but I want to be legit now
But apparently pirating is safer now

All you'll ever need

Jon
You can't even pin a non-installed app to the taskbar?
man...
oh n/m

Try a shortcut?

Jon
yeah.. it pins but opens a secondary

10:30 AM
:P

Jon
sigh
I reckon you need some sort of registry key

Can't find visual studio 2015 community -.-

Jon
lol
try google

I did

I love 7+ Taskbar Tweaker: rammichael.com/7-taskbar-tweaker

10:31 AM
All I find is the ultimate edition -.-

middle-mouse-click closing of apps/windows is too good

Microsoft's website is crap

Jon
This will get you community ^^

2013 edition :\

Jon
10:32 AM
@Chris you are on win7?

yea

Jon
@Hjorthenify that should be for 2015

It's for 2013 :P Just ran it. As I said: Window's website it crap.

Jon
hmmm
dunno pretty sure that is what I ran to get it, but I may be wrong

That's the one I found as well.. Might as well just try to run it.

Jon
10:36 AM
How are you suppose to pin an application that is portable?
Without it generating a secondary tab when you click it?

shortcut

How do people test multitouch apps in Unity without compiling the whole thing and putting it on your device?

Jon
connect the device to your pc
when you build to device, it will run on it and debug in unity at the same time

Oh, awesome.

Jon
The initial setup can be a pain though

10:41 AM
Yeah, it usually is with these kinds of things

Jon
In my case, I had to install some HTC softare, that had no mention of phone drivers
HTC Sync or something
I even called HTC and asked about how to extract drivers from their site -- and they kept wanting me to install this software, and never explained it to me

Can't be much worse than getting it to work in Flash Builder though.

Jon
So I installed it, and it worked.
it was like a 200MB install
LOL.. I just wanted the damn drivers.

Haha yeah

Jon
It is funny because when you actually explain what it is you are doing to a tech person over the phone, they don't know what to say
"Yeah, so I am developing a game in unity, and I'm trying to send the apk to the phone via usb. I already enabled developer mode on the phone, but the computer is not capable of communicating with the device. I have a feeling it is because the drivers that are being used are not correct."
"Ok sir.... errrrr..."
@Hjorthenify so apparently I never installed 2015, i was running 2013 all along
yet, I was under the impression that I was on 2015 -- and even installed UnityVS2015 and it worked.
lol...soooo yeahhhhh
Inkscape is vector graphics isn't it?

10:51 AM
@Jon yes

Jon
well that isn't a photoshop replacement at all

Not at all =p

Jon
quite frankly, I don't think there is any worthy photoshop replacement
I can't stand Gimp -- I mean look at this:
It looks like a beefed up version of MSPaint
Then they forked it because a lot of people hate the interface, and make this:
The best option would have to be Paint.NET

Uhm, IIRC the second one is the original design, the first one is a more photoshop like version of gimp (which is now abandoned)

Jon
the second one is GimpShop
riddled with adware and crapware

11:02 AM
Yeah don't do gimpshop

Jon
The first one is the original Gimp.
both are still supported
I did GimpShop yesterday
had to format my pc
F**k you gimpshop

The second one is regular, default, gimp

Jon
it says gimpshop right in the picture

Where everything is a separate window that you can move

Jon
its from the gimpshop wiki page

11:04 AM
When was it updated?
Cause uuh, looks at gimp installation yeah it's not the first one

Jon
GIMPshop was a modification of the free and open source graphics program GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), with the intent to replicate the feel of Adobe Photoshop. Its primary purpose was to make users of Photoshop feel comfortable using GIMP. According to the developer, Scott Moschella: My original purpose for GIMPshop was to make the GIMP accessible to the many Adobe Photoshop users out there. I hope I’ve done that. And maybe along the way, I can convert a Photoshop pirate into a GIMP user. == History == GIMPshop was created by Scott Moschella of Next New Networks (formerly Attack of the...

Ah yes, 8 years ago

Jon
well then the Gimp website needs to update their shit pics
because they all look like they are 8 year old screenshots
Doesn't really make me want to use it

Jon
yep, lol

11:05 AM
Those aren't the ones you linked

Jon
look at that windows screenshot.. i mean really?

Yeah they're crap

Jon
I know, i was looking for better ones
They should invest time into fixing up that stuff, and make it more appealing

However, note that none of the screenshots look like the first one you linked
Everything is in separate, movable windows for one

Jon
fair enough

11:08 AM
Oh holy crap
You downloaded from gimpshop.com right?

Jon
i think so yeah

Read the fine print:
> Gimpshop.com is distributing the original unmodified software, obtained directly from GIMP's repository website, and does not modify it in any way. These installers comply with the original software manufacturer's policies and terms & conditions. DownloadAdmin™ is an install manager, which manages the installation of your chosen software. In addition to managing your download and installation, DownloadAdmin™will offer free popular software that you may be interested in.
(More cropped due to message length)

Jon
yep

So uuh yeah, download from the official website, not from adware sites that offer nothing

Jon
it basically silently installs like 5 apps that I was aware of anyways
Bunch of shit I never heard of
hijacked my browser
I had to format.
Nowadays, people literally get their PCs raped
it is crazy

11:10 AM
The gimpshop from wikipedia is different from that site (and also doesn't exist anymore)

Jon
yeah, I didn't read I just figured it was gimp

> Not more than a few days after the OS X version was released and spread virally, someone who isn't me bought "Gimpshop.com", put up a site with hot-links to the files on my site and began advertising - LOTS of advertising. Soon, there were donate buttons, my name in the site's title and much more - making it look like my website.

I asked that the owner stop hot-linking my files (and draining my bandwidth), so he hosted them somewhere else. I questioned his motives and he said he was just a fan and that the site was a "fan-site".

Jon
heh.
So basically I was had.
You know... software like this should be outlawed
But for some reason, its completely legal to do this stuff
I'd love to see these bullshit companies get fined
I'm thinking about the older generation -- that doesn't know how to fix a computer
They install some random software they trust, and BAM, their entire computer is gone to shit

My first hint was when I looked at where the download link went to and it said anything related to softonic =p

Jon
Then they ahve to pay 200$+ to get it "fixed" at a computer repair shop

11:13 AM
Yeah

11:24 AM
So gimpshop is BS?

Jon
essentially -- there is a valid gimpshop that seems to have faded to obscurity
and now some jerkwad is making money screwing people
disrupting the lives of people everywhere.

Nice... Where's anon when you need them? :P

Jon
masterbating in his mom's basement no doubt.

Yeah
