4:00 PM
I would get killed and type "fuckfuckfuck"

user146722
Noted, triply effective

user146722
By the way, my sense of humor started somewhere up there

user146722
I've been searching because it must be the most obvious question, but I really can't seem to find it.

user4704
Which?

user146722
Everyone asking how to start appears to be a fucking moron, did I miss something very obvious?

Q: Which one is better for a beginner to start with game development - unity3d or cryengine 3?

brilI am beginner in game development and want to work with either unity or cryengine because they have thier own player and we can play on web also with the player installed. I am confused with which to start. please answer this in terms of flexibity, visibility and speed, which one would be better?

user146722
Looks like an idiot

user4704
By definition if you have to ask how to get started, you know nothing about the field, which means you can easily present yourself in a manner that makes you look less intelligent than you actually are.

user4704
Further, language barriers can contribute to that impression.

user146722
4:12 PM
I understand, but as a beginner I can see they ar

user146722
Language barriers, that must be it

It's also very easy to sound very obnoxious if you're not careful.

user4704
Both those users aren't native English speakers.

user4704
Additionally, many of the people who are interested in learning to make games are young.

user146722
I've been interested since I was a kid really, just never had time

user146722
4:13 PM
I love shooting games

Speaking of young people wanting to learn how to make games, my English teacher approached me yesterday, asking if I'd be interested in tutoring her son over the summer.

"Depends what you're paying me" :)

Hehe
I said I wanted $20/h, minimum 3 hours. It's not a lot, but it's taxfree and I'm not exactly a professional. :P

Wooaaahhh
We're looking at some serious salary difference here :0
I'd be lucky to get £5/hr for that kind of work here in the UK

As a paid tutor on a school I got around three times that. :|

4:19 PM
What's the conversion rate, Google?

Err, not three time, two times. :P

Was about to go change jobs :p

£1 = $1.50

user4704
No new profiles yet >_<

I got $46/h tutoring at a school.

4:20 PM
... here I begin to see the differences in culture between us.

This is in Denmark. Not even far away from you. :P

You use dollars?

No, we used danish crowns, but I doubt you have a sense of what that is worth. :P

@JoshPetrie :(

Crowns? Never even heard of them... I thought it was krone
Are they the same thing and I'm being thick?

4:22 PM
It is. I'm pretty sure they're translated to crowns :P
I might be wrong.

Roughly £1 = 10kr

It's kroner in straight out Danish. :P

Yeah, translates to crowns
So you were getting what, 320kr/hr
Not bad :)

Q: How are simple shooting games created?

Selfless PsychopathAs a gamer and FPS enthusiast, I have some ideas about how I would like a multiplayer shooting game to be. All I'd like to do first is something simple and fun like CoD gun game mode. I am skilled with organization and can create databases, or figure out other software quickly. I have researched...

^ - Too Broad

user146722
4:25 PM
woah what the fuck

324 kr/hr at the school yeah. It was pretty awesome. I actually got 180 kr/hr, but it is multiplied by 1.8 since I get extra for preparation time. Preparation time I didn't need since the kids were just doing their own projects, and I was just helping when they needed.

user146722
@JoshPetrie Did I piss you off? I thought we were just cool

user4704
Hm?

user146722
Sorry for being so rude about people on the site man

@William'MindWorX'Mariager Isn't the danish education system close to free for students?

user4704
4:27 PM
Oh, because I closed your question?

@Noctrine Yeah, this was completely free for the students.

user146722
Well no @JoshPetrie, because I don't want to offend you

user4704
I didn't notice it was yours, I was just reviewing the new questions tab.

And we get paid to got to school here as well. About $800/mo.

user4704
It's just not the sort of question we consider on-topic; getting-started and the like is far too broad a subject to fit in the SE Q&A model well.

user146722
4:28 PM
Can you at least delete it so I don't look 100% fail?

user4704
Better to ask in chat, or on a discussion forum like GDNet.

user146722
Ok, how is a real shooting game made?

Well, we don't get paid, but we can request student aid. If we make more than $450/mo on the side, they start to take away from the student aid.

user4704
I think you can delete it since it has no answers, but generally no, we don't delete questions unless they're like... spam or offensive. It will get autonuked at some point probably.

user4704
@SelflessPsychopath What do you mean by "real?"

4:29 PM
@SelflessPsychopath Even for the chat, that's pretty broad. There are lots of aspects to cover.

Simple answer: with a lot of effort and time

Physics simulation, graphics, networking, input, etc.

user146722
@JoshPetrie Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, Halo, etc

user4704
Well, they're no less real than some game you make with something like FPS Creator or whatever.

user146722
@ArtOfCode ;) effort towards?

user4704
4:30 PM
Fundamentally, all games are made like any other software: programming and art.

You start with a loop.

user4704
Programming goes either directly towards the construction of the game, or construction of tools to make the game.

@SelflessPsychopath coding, graphic design, 3D modelling, testing...

user146722
From scratch??

user4704
At some point, yes.

user4704
4:31 PM
Most "large" games that you mentioned are not written from scratch at this point.

user146722
Where does Unreal Engine come in?

user146722
It is another generic game template?

user4704
They're built off of the existing engines that the relevant studios have used forever (which they either bought, or wrote from scratch).

At some point, after having made enough things from scratch - you decide that building from scratch is a waste of time.

user146722
Or is it a library?

user146722
4:31 PM
lol

user4704
Halo, for example, is built off the same codebase that the original Bungie founders used in college.

You begin to collect the reusable bits from the things that you have done and put them together.

user4704
Much of it is exactly the same as the code that ran Marathon.

user146722
That's wonderful, does it still smell like it got ripped out of an apple and jammed into an xbox as a fetus?

@JoshPetrie :o still?

user4704
4:32 PM
Yes.

How to make a game: Don't get sidetracked while working on said game.

user4704
It still has commented-out references to class Mac OS APIs, like FSSpecs.

user146722
:D

user4704
The Unreal Engine is a large piece of middleware developed over time to aid in the creation of games by eliminating the need to write a bunch of typical boilerplate stuff over and over.

user146722
Ah, so a library

user4704
4:33 PM
Effectively.

user4704
Although it's also got a bunch of tools with it, and is generally large enough of a suite of functionality to be considered an "engine" rather than a library.

user146722
Ok it comes full circle

user4704
But at some level, yes, most engines are libraries.

user4704
Your options, if you want to make a game, are basically:

user4704
a) learn to program or

user146722
4:34 PM
The engine is a library to do the hard work, and a set of tools to prebake everything?

user4704
b) find a tool that lets you build the game without programming

user146722
I can program

user4704
(b) is easier, but generally more limiting in the long run as you are bound rather heavily to the limitations of the tool; but if your game ideas fit within those, it's great.

user146722
:/

user4704
(a) is more flexible, but more complicated and often will take longer.

user4704
4:35 PM
Even if you elect to use middleware, like Unreal.

user4704
(which you probably should; writing everything from scratch is largely going to be a waste of time)

user146722
So I'll need to get a programmer too

user4704
(and at some level is impossible anyway)

9 times out of 10 a waste of time

user146722
You guys make games?

user4704
4:36 PM
Yes.

Never, we all hate games
SSsssssh @JoshPetrie

user146722
I really meant, I'm interested in your guys games

user146722
Wait a second lol @JoshPetrie knows too much about Halo's code

That should get you started ;)

user4704
4:37 PM
I worked on Rise of Legends, Catan (for Xbox), Guild Wars, Guild Wars 2, Halo 5, State of Decay, Moonrise, and other secret or cancelled things.

user146722
boom well how the fuck about that

Yeah and then there is Josh and a few others who actually do it professionally

user4704
Ten years now.

I hate when I know an English work for something but I can't find any matching Danish word ...

I got a full year next month

4:42 PM
"It's imperative that [...]"
No word for imperative in Danish. Only multiple words that give the same sense, but not a single word.

I got that problem with finnish too sometimes, I want to say a word but I can only think of it in english

user146722
Maybe you guys should get your countries on that english game

@William'MindWorX'Mariager imperative is a bad word anyway lol

Is Moonrise a pokemon-like?

@EwokNightmares How so?

4:48 PM
that sums it up

Anyone know why Chat image Upload fails for larger files, when Imgur supports it manually?
I guess the Imgur API might have some limitation.

Man, it's so pretty.

it someone told me something is imperative, I'd ask them if they are a robot or a bureaucrat

I imagine it's important because of the bureaucratic tone

user146722
Isn't a robot technically a bureaucrat? Following its internal logic disregarding its need for sustained power?

4:51 PM
"disregarding its need for sustained power" doesn't sound like any I know ;)

Jon
holy shit

Even though it's still buggy, the effect is interesting. It does give a sense of depth purely from analyzing the cellular lighting on the scene.

@William'MindWorX'Mariager is that effect something mathematical?

user146722
It looks to be

4:53 PM
I mean is it a process based on theory, or something discovered?

Well, it's mathematical yeah. It's an experiment I'm doing. :) Trying to see if I can get normal+specular working with a 2d cellular lighting system.
Well, it's not something I've read about, but the principle is simple trig. :)

Jon
they say if you start a sentence with "well" you don't know what your talking about

Well, I don't :P

user146722
It's too pleasingly perfect to be hand drawn. Humans are not capable of creating such pleasing art in a lifetime as computers can create in milliseconds

I'm just mucking around until I get something working. :P

@SelflessPsychopath I meant is he using mathematically defined filters and methods, or did he combine existing effects that create a new effect

Well, I'm not lying with this sentence.

"Well it, it depends. [big rant about why I can't directly answer the question]"

@Jon I think that might be valid for native speakers, but foreigners easily adopt weird speech patters.

Jon
4:56 PM
Well, I know nothing about that.

user146722
@EwokNightmares I believe the core of mathematics as it's taught involves combining existing mathematical effects to create defined filters and methods

Not being in contact with other native speakers means we're not exposed to the "normal" way of using the language.

^ Not being a native speaker can be annoying sometimes.

For years I thought if someone responds with "interesting" it means they're interested.

4:59 PM
Can't wait until I get to live in Scotland for a few years. I bet it's going to be a huge help.

does it sound like potatoes in your mouth even with english?

In Denmark yeah definitely.
We have this Danish "sound" we make when we talk. It riddles my English speech as well. :P

I don't know why but most Dutch people have an instantly recognizable accent when speaking English.
It's really terrible.

Being midwestern, everyone has a recognizable accent.

user146722
Is there something as pretty as Unreal but with a less annoying programming language attached?

5:05 PM
Unity can be really pretty.

Blueprint is one of the easiest things. Pretty is based on the talent of your artists.

user4704
Depends what you mean by "annoying."

user4704
And "pretty."

user4704
Unreal and Unity are likely the two big tools you'd want to look at.

user146722
I mean C++, and Radiosity, lol

5:06 PM
doesn't it use standard c++?

Epic's artists are very talented, and have a lot of resources to make those awesome photorealistic textures.
@EwokNightmares It does, but you don't have to.

@SelflessPsychopath I assume you mean 'highly detailed 3D graphics'?

user146722
@Lokkij Well I understand that the quality of the artwork is the main factor, but I'm not gonna do any better than MakeHuman

user146722
So I have to hope that advanced radiometrics algorithms can save me :P

Well other than Unity and Unreal I can't really think of any publicly available 3D engines that can handle highly detailed graphics.

5:12 PM
@Lokkij ahaha

CryEngine, Unigine

@OMGtechy How naive I was. :P

Source 2

user4704
There's quite a few.

@Lokkij the biggest gripe I have with non-native speakers is when they say OK when they don't understand something
Many tools called game engines are available for game designers to code a game quickly and easily without building from the ground up. == Free/libre and open source software == Note: The following list is not exhaustive. It mixes game engines with rendering engines as well as API bindings without any distinctions. == Proprietary == === Commercial === 4A Engine — A 3D game engine developed by 4A Games to power their game series, "Metro". user146722
5:13 PM
oh god

didnt guild wars develop a test game on monkey engine?

user146722
@SpartanDonut Is this an engine or a template?

user4704
@EwokNightmares No.

@JoshPetrie oh thought I saw a demo video a while ago about it
some inside demop

user4704
5:16 PM
NCsoft didn't develop Guild Wars; ArenaNet did.

user4704
That tool was presumably used elsewhere at NCsoft.

thats what I saw
not sure if AAA quality or not
can't imagine on java

Oh maybe source 2 isn't out yet. But it's Valve's engine that was recently (GDC) announced to be available

user4704
@EwokNightmares Yeah, also not ArenaNet.

@JoshPetrie heh just realized that.

user4704
5:17 PM
Just using assets.

user4704
ArenaNet's engine was entirely home-grown.

user146722
I got stuck on the menus and hud type stuff before and Fuck This'd about it, but looking at that video with basically nothing special going on made me realize basically all you need is animated 3d models

What are you trying to make? What have you made?

user146722
@Noctrine Have you ever played a gungame in any FPS?

user146722
5:23 PM
I have divine insight about the true nature of gungame. lol

@SelflessPsychopath Yes, I just didn't think you were trying to start at 100.

user146722
"Start at 100"?

Or well, at your endgoal.

user146722
I prefer to always start at the finish line

Most people (who succeed) usually put a few other things under their belt to learn.
Where as most people who try and build that massive project out the gate usually burn out for one reason or another.

user146722
5:25 PM
I will keep that in mind, but please do understand that I tend to never fit the cookie cutter.

Please understand that we tend to struggle to assist those unwilling to learn to crawl before they learn to run :P

It's a common occurance for people to come in and it looks like this:
A) I want to do X.
B) We think you should do Y before X, since it will help you do X.
A) But I want to do X. How do I do X?
B) First, you do W, which you would have learned already if you did Y.
A) But I want to do X.

user146722
Please understand that I'm having a hard time suppressing my knee-jerk thought which is: Tell me how running works and then leave me alone while I beat my face with the ground... I'll figure it out.

hehehe
:)

user4704
Download Unreal or Unity and poke around then.

5:29 PM
Anyone know for how long Android users has had to agree to the services applications wants to use? You know, the box that you have to accept when installing an app.

Just remember that you want us to leave you alone while you hurt yourself and we'll get along fine ;)

We're all friendly (well, except SpartanDonut) and we love to help. But when you help someone, mainly you point out an order of steps to take to reach the goal, many of which will seem mundane.

That's the kind of thing I'd expect William to say. Not you! lol

:D

5:30 PM
He's lying, there's a well before. :P

simple example: one guy wanted to make a game, but didn't understand the very fundamentals of games. So we suggested he program a simple Pong game, which would teach him about display, main loop, user input, etc. But he didn't want to do that since making Pong isn't glamorous. But it would have helped him a lot.

user146722
@William'MindWorX'Mariager Well I don't know if that's a safe bet

user4704
Has he been back recently?

user146722
@Almo Are you gently telling me to Pong or Gtfo?

user4704
I haven't seen him in a while.

5:32 PM
@William'MindWorX'Mariager I can't answer this one.
@SelflessPsychopath hahah no
it's just an example of a particular case. You may understand more basics than he did.

Which of the many guys who did that are we talking about?

psychO

user146722
lol

There have been oh so many of those :P

5:32 PM
psychO was the Pong example.

user146722
lol...

Mainly you sound a lot older than him. I think he was 13 or something.

I recall he did create something playable at one time (he was called BlueBeast by then)

user146722
@Almo hahaha oh good

He really got irate with us for not helping, then ignored our suggestions. was really bad.

user146722
5:35 PM
hm, taking me back and forth on that issue, lol I'll just give up on having an opinion

we even made a seperate chatroom for people to help him

user146722
lol do that for me!

he got loads of attention. but in the end, he only ever did what he wanted, with usually poor results.
he was one of maybe 3 people I've ever put on ignore for more than a day or two.

He started out with questions like 'how do I make the gun shoot' and after loads of questions we figured out he didn't even know how to write a single line of code.

hahaha

user146722
5:37 PM
How do I make the gun shoot?

tell him press left mouse click

Well I don't remember it exactly.

user146722
hahaha sorry do I get my own room for people to help me yet?

We gave PsychO one once the other conversations started to be drowned out by a continual stream of stupid questions.

user146722
Damn dude don't say that to me, you must not even know the first rule

5:39 PM
I don't think I do.

The first rule is that you don't talk about fight club.

user146722
Can I just have a place to be tutored so I don't have to emit a continuous stream of stupid questions?

Fight Club is a great movie, and is even better the second time. (no spoilers please)
i know i know the ship sinks. yes.

@SelflessPsychopath We can give you a separate chatroom but you'll get far less attention and will be forgotten quickly. If you want to ask questions, do it here.

user146722
I'm gonna have to use my windows machine huh?

user4704
5:42 PM
Not necessarily.

user146722
well Unreal and Unity both busted a gasket on wine and started leaking problem-juice

What have I missed?

user4704
Well in that case, maybe.

user146722
Unless Unreal engine has known issues with rundll32's failing here and there

user146722
lol

user146722
5:44 PM
What about the rumors that Call of Duty runs on Quake?

user146722
How do I make Quake feel like CoD?

I heard a rumour that the moon was made from cheese once.

I heard that everything on the internet is true
I heard it from the internet, so it must be true

user146722
I heard it from someone in real life

user146722
lol much more true now, what

5:46 PM
and where did he hear it from? if it was from the internet then it must be true

user146722
Well either way, I don't mind "modding" an existing game if I can rip it all down and re-do the entire hud and menu and everything

@SelflessPsychopath what're you're describing there is really just extracting the game engine from the game
better off just using the engine if you can

@SelflessPsychopath you can do that with Unreal Tournament. They're called "full mods".

user146722
I've managed to make a world in source using hammer and could load it and walk around

I think you can do it with the id engines as well

user146722
5:49 PM
a ha! lol it all comes together now

user146722
ID = quake, IW = call of duty

user146722
confusion inevitable

user146722
Damn I wish I could tell a friend of mine to duck, I see him about to get sucker punched from here lol
