okay, yeah, looks like Wardy was the one he was mostly spamming flags on
and Wardy is a guy who will flag anyone who disagrees with him for stupid things like using a swear word
Mick has been suspended multiple times for 30 minutes or so because Wardy's bullshit flags

Wardy has a bit of an agenda against Mick because one time Mick showed how he was going about things the wrong way and he took offense
so Wardy goes out of his way to be a massive ass to Mick whenever possible
sooo while Mick shouldn't have been spamming flags, and deserves the ban for that, it's still understandable

Excepting where he then went off spamming flags only on me cause i had the nerve to ignore him =p. No wardy involved at that point
But the real reason for the 30 day ban was the ban evation, that's just an auto ban for a month

yeah
not my problem at any rate. as long as no one was suspended for bullshit things like using a swear word, I'm not mad.

10:14 PM
Yeah, swearword bans are lame
Ah well, time for bed
It's only 0016...

Hey, guys. I posted a question about game development on Arqade, and I was told it would be considered off-topic, and I should ask it here. But would it be acceptable to post it here, since it's kind of simple?

Q: TES Construction Set - Import mod from elsewhere?

ASCIIThenANSII am using the Morrowind version of The Elder Scrolls Construction Set, and I have a mod that was downloaded from elsewhere. I would like to see how this mod was made, so I can make my own, so I wanted to open it. It wasn't in the Open list, and I can't figure out how to import it specially. It ...

yep, that's on-topic here...but I'm not sure if we have anyone that can answer it

user146722
I've gotta take a break from being a hardcore game developer for a moment, I scored this awesome fresnel lens the other day

user146722
It's about 3pm, so I should probably go play with that

@IcyDefiance 'Who can answer it' doesn't really matter to me. I was just wondering if it could be asked here (and not be closed as too trivial).

10:27 PM
@IcyDefiance he's right. videos are not possible to skim for useful information.
"Too trivial" is seldom the close reason

@Almo So I could post it here?

I'd include a link to the mod so other people can try opening it and debugging the problem
otherwise I think it's a good question for this site

I think you'd be ok asking here, but cross-posting to multiple SE sites is frowned upon

@IcyDefiance OK then. I'm going to repost it on this site. Thanks for the help!

if Josh or Noctrine show up, they're mods, so they could give a more definite answer

user146722
10:28 PM
looks like reverse engineering

user146722
ok bbl

@Almo I can't tell how you misspoke but I'm pretty sure you did

@Almo I mean moving. I post it here, and delete the one on Arqade.

right

I still think it IS possible to skim through (seek?) a video to find relevant info

10:29 PM
it's not though

It may not be as efficient but its still possible

say the tutorial is on "In App Purchases in iOS"

Ok. I'll pretend your example isn't rigged ;)

how do you skim through to find the one part you're stuck on?
it's exactly the kind of thing I hate running into with "video tutorials"

If you have the general idea of steps to take to accomplish somethign but are really getting tripped up on step X you can skim a long video until you find step x and see how someone else does that

10:31 PM
Have you actually done this?

no, see, that's searching, not skimming

I've tried, and I didn't have much luck.

searching is harder (a LOT harder, because no ctrl+f), but not impossible with videos

but the real question is... are you in for an ARAM before dinner?

Just started a ranked
@IcyDefiance mostly fair

10:32 PM
ok man talk later than :)

skimming is very fast reading, trying to just get the most important information without reading the whole thing, when you don't know what that important information is
technique #1 for skimming is to read the first sentence of each paragraph
good luck doing that with a video

45 mins ago, by Icy Defiance
that's not skimming, that's missing everything, and good luck finding the single sentence with the relevant information by using skip
I think that's where I became interested
It's possible to find relevant information using skip
despite what term you use for it
I will agree skimming a video probably isn't very useful
It depends though
Some videos are filled with enormous amounts of fluff

everything is filled with enormous amounts of fluff. it's just impossible to filter it out in video format.

You use such absolute words such as impossible and always so much
I am beginning to wonder about you

in this case, "everything" is a generalization, while "impossible" is absolute :P

10:35 PM
That's what I said
Never said anything about everything

aram isn't aram if people keep dodging
aram dodge penatly should be HUGE

just reinforcing that I meant it to be absolute, lol

like 15 min

haha ok
Consider a video where after every few steps the person likes to stop and explain a bunch of philosophy around why he did things. You've made N games so you don't give a shit about his philosophy because you know it all already. Skim / Skip through the video until you actually see some action on the screen again (usually these people just sit and the screen is still while they talk)
If you go too far, rewind until you've got to the next point where you are ready to do something
Watch the Unreal 2D videos sometime. They are pretty awful

but (a) seeking is blind, so you need to rely on luck to find the next important part, and (b) if he's discussing reasons for doing something you probably won't be able to infer the context of what he's talking about, so you won't know whether to go forward or backward
with text, just jump to the next paragraph and it's probably important again

10:38 PM
a) open your eyes b) no

also, and this is a totally new reason, people talk sooooo much slower than I read

No one ever said videos > text tutorials man :P
Just defending videos as a possible medium for learning
And the ability to skip through to find relevant info

OK, I searched around and found nothing. So do I ask my question (by posting it here and deleting the Arqade version?)

they're a great medium for learning, just not for learning about typing text :P

^

10:40 PM
videos are a much better medium when the thing being taught can't be copy/pasted anyway

Regarding "blind - i.imgur.com/NXpHZP4.png

yeah that's not helpful most of the time. good luck reading text in that thumbnail, lol.

And... who said we were talking about programming? I thought we were just talking about game dev
@IcyDefiance you clearly have not beein paying attention... seriously dood

@SpartanDonut In cases such as mine (construction sets, i.e, Valve Hammer Editor or TESCS), it's mostly looks like the same screen and really hard to read text in that small preview.
@SpartanDonut What monstrosity have I unleashed?

WHY ARE WE WATCHING VIDEO TUTORIALS ON PROGRAMMING?!?!
This should be about learning tools for game dev
Get out of your black boxes people

10:42 PM
lol even for photoshop I really dislike video tutorials
like, specifically for the pen tool in photoshop, a video tutorial might be nice. maybe.

you don't have to read tiny text to see that the person has done something on screen
It's pretty clear they have stopped doing nothing and started doing something

OK, let me restate what I'm asking in a general format. I'm asking for help with using a feature of an SDK for a specific game. Can I ask it here?

hmm? thought we settled that.
this is a totally different discussion lol

@IcyDefiance I couldn't tell, I was asking if it would get closed and then we started arguing.

Almo continued a discussion that had ended before you showed up
I think Selfless Psychopath had originally started it, inadvertently
but yeah, totally separate from your thing. you're good.

10:47 PM
@IcyDefiance Oh, OK. I'm gonna go post it. Would you guys like a link?

eh, I won't be able to answer it, but linking it doesn't hurt anything

@IcyDefiance OK, thanks! :D

my adblocker blocked the Elevator.js button at the bottom :( totally killed the mood and momentum

hahah

1 hour later…
11:55 PM
@IcyDefiance Yo?

doesn't look like he asked it on this site yet, so maybe the comments he got on Gaming.SE solved the problem
ASCIIThenANSI was wondering whether the question he linked (gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/215041/…) would be a good fit here
