12:01 AM
Alright caught up.
Seems ok. @ASCIIThenANSI You can ask a gaming mod to migrate.

12:18 AM
today through this website, I found this man-face-slap-with-fish interactive media Internet is full of interesting and yet useless stuff.

haha

not sure if annoying or informative

it's the sort of thing you could print out and have multiple frames hanging on your wall with

12:55 AM
I gotta say, I really am impressed with Unity's cross-platform build switching. One project, just click a button to switch platforms, and I toggle some high-level gameObjects with platform-named tags to tell my game which mode I'm running, or which features to enable, but yeah it all works great really. and on my Mac for doing iOS builds, I just sync with git, is real nice frankly

1:10 AM
++
Nice to hear some good once in a while

@Chris But if your project is big enough, switching can take a half an hour
like it does with Real Feel Golf
because it reimports all the assets for the new platform, overwriting the old ones.

My switches are quick luckily :x
:(

Again, Unity strikes me as better for small projects, and not so good for large-scale projects.

indeed, your time can be diminished

:)

1:13 AM
focusing on one platform has its merits

@SpartanDonut DONUT
agreed chris

PLAYING MORTAL KOMBAT HOLD ON

OK HOLDING

like console development, don't have to worry about a bajillion types of controllers to support, gfx cards, resolutions, this and that

1:14 AM
yeah
Soul Calibur II was multiplatform, and dropped frames
Tekken 4, same team, was PS-Only, and DROPPED NO FUCKING FRAMES

but, then your game is only one platform. so have to weigh it up really
heh

:)
Fighting games with split-second timing can't drop frames, in my opinion
they over-pushed the backgrounds
BTW I was an Astaroth player.

all tied into the animations and toggles of which parts are blocking and stuff yeah?

yeah

very fine hit detection and all
is this seriously what Windows 10 looks like on tablet?
just looks so gross. okay I'm done ranting

1:22 AM
hahah
aw shit
looking at Steam reviews, it looks like Gratuitous Space Battles II didn't turn out well. :(
was really hoping, as I really liked the first game

@Chris Looks like someone opened a really bad looking web page and decided to open a couple menus at once here

@SpartanDonut webpage aside, the UI is just flat, borderless, zero effort to make it look nice. which is supposedly the appeal of it being minimalist, but ughhhhhhhhhh

it looked nicer earlier in the dev preview

I like a little drop shadow or bevel :(

I really liked it at the time

1:34 AM
eh
point being... when you actually use it... it's a full screen browser I'm sure
the picture seems to be intentionally trying to make things look bad and cluttered

it's not minimalist though. not even attempting to be minimalist. that's a totally different thing.

not just the web app then, I just dont like the look of it all on the whole, but that's just me
even the Win10 desktop, I loathe the day I need to upgrade off Win7

I mean, even the second screenshot you posted looks pretty good to me. just need to remove that search box, or at least make it some color that isn't blue.
oh and the recycle bin icon is meh
the rest is great
I like flat and dark

Picking the right color scheme helps

I really like Aero :( the slight gloss and shine over everything

1:44 AM
yeah I like it too. doesn't mean I dislike other things though.
especially when I can have a dark theme and actually read the text
Win8 didn't even fix that, but I think Win10 did, IIRC from when I had the dev preview

user146722
lol so whoever was talking about digital ocean, thanks, I just got an ad for them now

I guess using the Aero UI style for 8 years has sort of made it feel superior, win8/10 looks like a backwards change

@SpartanDonut power went out. On my phone. Will rejoin if it comes back on.
No storm or anything. Just random power out. Whole block at least

someone drove into a pole

or a squirrel touched the line and a pole at the same time
happened to my grandparents once. squirrel exploded and power went out.
usually that wouldn't be enough to cause a power outage, so I'm not sure if there's more to the story, but hearing about it was pretty funny

user146722
1:54 AM
The squirrel frying might not conduct the current required to break anything, but that superheated carcass might be hot enough to ionize the air and create a cloud of conductive plasma.

user146722
That would ignite a voltage fire that would keep going until a wire melts, or the power goes out.

user146722
It definitely works that way with Snails vs Power Supply from a Microwave Oven

yeah, normally (I think) it would just go out for a second, then come back. this one lasted a lot longer though.

@Almo we won...
We managed to stay ahead... swaine rage quit and that secured it for us

is LoL pretty harsh against ragequitters? I know in Dota 2 you have to play like 5 low-priority queued games before you can play with normal players again

2:00 AM
league will straight up ban people who afk too often

Only if you're habitual

user146722
Man that elevator.js is basically as thrilling as a real elevator

once I got banned for 3 days 'cuz AT&T kicked me out of too many matches. they're actually worse than Comcast that way.
wasn't even ranked. I didn't dare play ranked on that connection, lol.

:(
yeah shoddy internet is the worst

2:16 AM
@SpartanDonut wow good job dhame i still get a loss for the afk. But i dont feel so bad about it knowing it didnt cause a loss for you guys. :)

Power is still out. :(
Had to call the guys to rescue someone and their dog from the elevator
Power company expexta it bakc on in about 2 hours so that's it for me tonight :(
Talk later :)

adieu

user146722
Unity says I corrupted "MecanimCurves.png"

user146722
:(

2:27 AM
@SpartanDonut just came back
I'll play one more if you trust it not to go back out
I've not seen it go out a second time in my years here

haha whatever
I could do another

ok

remind me to never again buy headphones with a volume control in the middle of the cable

@Chris to answer your question, an image

every time I move my chair toward the desk I pinch the volume up button between the desk and my body
I'm gonna go deaf 'cuz of this

2:29 AM
first time I've seen that

I've seen that once

heh

2:43 AM
@Almo you ever sold anything in the Mac App Store?

3:19 AM
I have not personally.

1 hour later…
4:25 AM
fair enough. I am considering it.... would be a $100 gamble to recoup the cost of the dev fee for a year, as well as the extra time involved building and uploading. the likelihood that someone will see my game for the first time in the App Store app on their Mac and click the Buy button, hmm hmm

2 hours later…
6:21 AM
Hi

Hello

What's up, Chris?

6:58 AM
same old
you?

Physics class

Hjorthenify r u at school? Me is just curious... how old r u (if you don't mind telling)? Highschool? College...?

Yes

asl?

it's always 18/f/cali
say anything else and you might as well just quit the internet

7:03 AM
Or 18/f/flo

18 / both / your mum's house

...18/f/cali? oh..
oh.. ah.
xD

@SpartanDonut >0/humanoid/earth

making map editor for a game is tougher than making it's game.

Yes.. And I have done that twice xD

user92578
7:08 AM
Totally

it's like writing another same game but boring one.

:P
The first one I mad was fully featured, but the second one was very basic before I switched to unity

if you can make it good enough for anyone to make their own levels, that's the golden ticket really

Yep tiled exists though...

so you made editor before Unity then after Unity. Do you think with Unity, making map editor gets easier? (as much as making game with Unity?)

7:11 AM
First one I made was using ANSII and the console where I would draw inside of it :P
First game I ever made...

like LittleBigPlanet or Legend of Grimrock

ANSII?

microsoft's ASCII

ah.

@BlueBug

7:13 AM
or maybe not...

@IcyDefiance You're right

I was thinking ANSII must be some sort of ancient language that I must be too young to know

oh, yeah, it's ANSI, with one I

NO wait it's ascii

@Hjorthenify Is that a test "are you a machine"? One designed to distinguish machines from humans? I am a human and I failed it to read it. It looks like True but also False.

7:16 AM
@BlueBug It was more an answer to your question :P

looks like ANSI as referred to by Windows is actually Windows-1252. legacy things like Notepad and cmd just distorted the meaning of ANSI to "whatever the default is on this system"

Ah
Just fired up my editor... So many features

ning

Morning
I kinda regret dropping this project, but I wanted something more graphical :P

7:25 AM
It's a ASCII based sprite editor? Nice

Yep and a map editor
1 is the map editor with collisions, metadata, colors and symbols.. 2nd is sprite and animation editor(you can select a different anim_state and then alter it however you like)
Also the map is endless and you switch cells using ctrl+arrow
All done in the console :P

as cool as it is, having all that fancy graphic on console must had been much work. uhhhh I can hardly imagine myself being able to do that.
@Hjorthenify What was the game about? I am curious, there are door, container, bookshelf, item, creature(enemy?), and spawner. A battle inside a... library? But there is no container inside a library either?
palyer must fight I assume since there is "melee attack" animation.

7:46 AM
RPG where you could walk indoors :P

8:04 AM
I'm new to reviewing, and I'm curious about something. I rejected this edit but others approved it: gamedev.stackexchange.com/posts/98844/revisions
How does that work? The edit was obviously silly, adding a completely unrelated tag.
I know that Unity 2D uses a Box2D implementation, but the question is not related to Box2D at all.

I'd also have rejected the edit
Though it technically does use 2D physics

8:28 AM
yeah I would've also rejected it too
has nothing at all to do with Box2D
even if it's 2D physics, that's not Box2D

I made a new suggested edit for voting, with explanation of my reasoning

8:57 AM
greetings
anyone ever use libgdx before?

Yes, ask away.

Fairly sure people have used it

i am learning the gesture input in libgdx, my question is, is "fling" always performed after a "pan"?
is that possible for a pan not ended with fling?
it seems everytime i ends a pan, it always call "fling" and everytime i performed a fling, a pan flashes before

k checking it now. thanks

9:02 AM
@MosesAprico It's completely unrelated to your question :P

oh dear
lol
no wonder i am wondering
@Hjorthenify any idea to my question tho?

Sorry, but no :P I've not used Libgdx before

ok. np :)

@Hjorthenify I think the self exploitation one on the first page is pretty horrible too. And dumb, IF YOU ARE MAKING AN ONLINE GAME. ADD AUTO PATCHING

@KevinvanderVelden That's the one I was referring to. But yeah.. Worst hackfix ever!

9:14 AM
It's on the first page! Definitely not the last hack in the article =p

Ah yes.. I probably should have rephrased that :P

@MosesAprico the docs don't answer your question. logically I would think some pans may not have fling called afterward, but it might just call fling with a velocity of 0. only way to figure it out is to experiment. write up a demo and see for yourself how it works.
of course if someone shows up who has worked with that function before, they might be able to give a better answer and save you some effort

Q: What's the point of the back piping operator

LokkijLiveScript features both the forward and backward piping operator. The purpose of the forward piping is clear: [1, 2, 3] |> reverse |> tail |> sum translates to and is much clearer than sum(tail(reverse([1, 2, 3])));. However, the purpose of the backward piping is a mystery to me: sum <| tail <...

Argh, I forgot the question mark.

@IcyDefiance ah yes exactly. fling with 0 velocity after a pan

Jon
TerrainEngine.cginc - helper functions for Terrain & Vegetation shaders.

10:47 AM
... the intro of that game, what the hell

Jon
it gets worse

wow...that was unexpected

Jon
11:05 AM
This game is friggen awesome ^
Only a certain ice weapon can damage the monster; shooting it with a fire weapon actually heals it instead.
And when the monster loses half its health, it suddenly heals back to full strength, a seemingly impossible enemy to defeat. But boost the monster’s strength by shooting fire at it at the right moment, and its own healing process will push its health beyond one hundred percent and into the negative, a common mishandling of variables in software that breaks the boundaries of its health meter and kills the monster.
I wanna write a new prototype... just don't know what to write... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

11:51 AM
:o
Nice!
Can't you just heal it from the beginning @Jon ?

Jon
you can't no
I think the hack is because the healing the monster does create the overflow, and not the healing you do
For example. your healing would say "max at capacity" -- the monster healing probably just does += half

Ahhh
Right

Jon
The idea for this game is really cool

Clever.. Very clever.
Yeah. How did the taxi game go, btw?

Jon
its still kicking around my hd

11:57 AM
Ah :P

Jon
That was probably the most promising game -- my only gripe is that I wasn't able to work out fun controls for mobile
I'd literally have to have onscreen dpad and buttons

Make it like flappy bird but where you move the car using the gyrometer

Jon
no.
You need to be able to activate the Thrusters in 4 directions
And you also need to be able to activate/deactivate a landing gear

controls are always interesting

Jon
Yeah, well it is the main reason I can't think of a fun game to write for mobile

12:07 PM
Ah

you would have too many buttons show up at once?
or too complex kinetics

Jon
Well.. I wanted to avoid On Screen Buttons
I think they suck.

Agreed

most of the time they do, yes. otoh there are always examples where they are not in the way

Jon
I just think if you need to put OSB in your game, then it should not be a mobile game :P
Would play better on a PC

12:13 PM
imho they did a good job with the buttons in Granny Smith

Jon
Just saying, personally, I'd make it PC first
If I do pursue it.
I'm really more interested in writing a mobile game that is solid in terms of design.
Which really, when you sit down and think about it, is kinda limited
Touch / Swipe / Pinch
And the Pinch is pain in the ass.

gestures through front camera, microphone

Jon
I like the idea of blowing in the microphone -- but that is a testing nightmare
so many devices...

user92578
summer job boss calls during school day -> I call back after school day -> He doesn't answer. Who is supposed to do the next call?

make a game without any "direct" input through the hands, and it will be the most funny thing to watch being played in public (a train would certainly be good)

Jon
12:17 PM
lol.. "TURN! TURN!!!!!"\
Ever play that space sim game that you have to give orders to other people ?

nope

Jon
its just a bunch of panels.. you have to tell others to do stuff on their phones, while they tell you to do stuff on yours

smile->accelerate

Jon
before time runs out
it is chaotic
amazing game

sounds hilarious

12:18 PM
@Tyyppi_77 call him again imo if it's been 24 hours or so, shows him you're still interested

Jon
SpaceTeam

a bit like that game where you had to watch your opponents' monitors

user92578
@Chris so now i'll just wait?

user92578
right, thanks @Chris

12:20 PM
@Tyyppi_77 yeah give him 24 hours I reckon, then try calling again, leave a message. if it's been yet another day after that, :/

@Jon that's looks hilarious

aaahahaha I have to try that

Jon
We got pretty far in it.. like level 12
it gets so crazy
stressful to the end
So this, is a terrific design of a game. It is so simple, and there is nothing out there like it.
And look how much fun those bastards are having.
It makes you become social, with the most anti-social device in the world, a cell phone.

Thats a cool game
very unique

pseudo-random, isn't it?

Jon
12:23 PM
I think everything in computers is pseudorandom

I mean what has to be done, how the inputs are named, that stuff

Jon
There are pre-defined screens -- everyone gets a different one with different controls on them
The commands you get, are for others to execute -- and everyone gets commands to give to others.

'Morning, All

Jon
If you don't execute in the time given, your ship explodes and everyone loses.

Reminds me a bit of WarioWare, the random frantic hectic nature

Jon
12:25 PM
<3 warioware
also hated some of it.
unskippable cutscenes from hell... man.
The game is 8 hours long -- 7 hours of cutscenes
So i killed my website last night -- I deleted a DNS entry that I thought was no longer in use
Turns out my wordpress blog install was pointing to it for its db instance
OKAY, So I need some help with some Blending -- Maybe someone here can help me out
Blend SrcAlpha DstAlpha
Blend SrcAlpha Zero
BlendOp Add
Blend SrcColor DstColor
Blend DsTColor Zero
BlendOp Add

Whats the problem you are having ?

user92578
I spent the school breaks looking at the "Show Your Level Editor(s)" topics in the tigsource forums, and now I want to make my own

Jon
I am trying to reproduce this blend, from an XNA project
BlendState Multiply = new BlendState()
{
    AlphaSourceBlend = Blend.DestinationAlpha,
    AlphaDestinationBlend = Blend.Zero,
    AlphaBlendFunction = BlendFunction.Add,
    ColorSourceBlend = Blend.DestinationColor,
    ColorDestinationBlend = Blend.Zero,
    ColorBlendFunction = BlendFunction.Add
};
ah...

12:44 PM
AlphaBlendFunction = BlendFunction.Add
Not sure how to do that one
I lol'd

user92578
@Hjorthenify umm you linked me a small tigsource icon?

O_O

There.. Must have copied the icon somehow instead of the url :P

user92578
12:56 PM
Yeah

I'd have copy pasted some of my procedural generation code =p

user92578
I'm kinda okay with tiled

user92578
but it's just not as cool

user92578
and not as fast as I could get with my own one

user92578
And I could easily modify things that are not supported by tiled

12:57 PM
Ye

Yeah, but you'd spend time that could be spend on improving your game =p

I'll eventually start using tiled as well and import it into unity.. Then when I have the loading done I might work on my own editor as well..

user92578
@KevinvanderVelden yup

user92578
I would love an easy way of "terrain" bitmapping

user92578
Tiled has it, but it's not great with multiple types of terrains

1:00 PM
Isn't Tiled open source?

user92578
yeah it is

Yeah, also in C++

user92578
spent two hours trying to get it to compile, then gave up

Ahh..

user92578
I was thinking about modding it a bit for me

Jon
1:22 PM

have you placed hidden messages in it?

Jon
lol

user92578
^ isn't a "no"

-.-
yeah you misspelled "kill all unicorns" there

user92578
Aight todays task is a loading state which includes adding a progressbar gui panel

1:38 PM
Bummer. My wife really likes Spaceteam.

user92578
Look at all these people with people to game with :)

thanks for the reminder I wanted to get my gf a "loading..." shirt - she's pregnant

user92578
lol

user92578
congrats

thank you. it's a revenge thing because she bought me a three wolf moon shirt when I got my diploma

user92578
1:40 PM
i don't get that one

You must be very powerful

@Tyyppi_77 you don't know three wolf moon?

user92578
nope

@Dev2rights I can barely handle it

1:42 PM
yup, that

So I just cleaned a pc. Nothing special, didn't even remove the heatsink or anything. However, now I just get a blank screen on boot. :(
Checked cables (didn't even touch them though), no result

here's something you don't see every day on SO:

user92578
you left a wire unconnected

Q: ZMODEM CRC-32 FCS Issues

MilzI found many questions and answers on this topic. But I still stuck with ZModem stuff. I'm stuck with CRC-32 stuff at the end of the frame (FCS). I wanted to know on which part of the ZFile header frame is calculated this checksum? Is the calculation include frame type, encoding type, ZCRCW bytes...

ZModem questions!
:D

user92578
@Lokkij Is the device connected to an electricity supplier?

user92578
1:43 PM
Yes: Is the device on?

Yah. Fans spinning and everything

user92578
No: Connect the device

user92578
well that's a bummer

user92578
(first time using that word, hope it's correct)

I tried checking the CPU but I cant get the heatsink loose
(yes, I lifted the lever)

user92578
1:45 PM
hmm

I did clean the RAM sticks - could a damaged RAM stick maybe be the cause? sigh

do you have two monitors connected? Just asking because you seem to be able to chat with us

user92578
I don't know shit about PC insides, why am I answering to you?

damaged ram never caused a blank screen for me, just warnings or error messages
check the mainboard power connector. it's possible that contacts slipped out of the plastic housing, in which case power to the fans might be there, but not to all other devices

Lokkij do you have sound on?

1:48 PM
There's speakers connected if that's what you mean
@Christoph Separate pc

@Lokkij ;)

@Christoph Do you mean something like this
Argh I want to check the CPU but the heatsink won't come off

@Lokkij yes that one. all contacts must be pushed equally far into the housing, otherwise they won't make a reliable connection to the board

user92578
Does anyone know how to do this for C++?

user92578

Q: How do I edit the Visual Studio templates for new C# class/interface?

Jørn Schou-RodeI find myself removing the following import statements in nearly every C# file I create Visual Studio: using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; Of course its really easy to do this with Resharper, but I really should not have to. There must be a few template (cl...

1:52 PM
I'll check that

Sometimes the motherboard sends error messages through the speakers

I don't think this one does
Is there a way to check whether it's the thing that connects the motherboard to the VGA cable?
Also WHY THE HELL WON'T THIS THING COME LOOSE

user92578
found it

Hey. I have a question about a developer's choice for something they used in a game (I mean an existing game, and why they chose what they did.) Does this count as GameDev or Arqade?
