5:12 PM
Anyone use Prototype js?

i did not have the pleasure, but lots of coworkers complained about it being a mixed-blessing tool
very strict about its conventions, etc

In the middle of my refactor, finally getting to the core part of it. And yeah, prototypejs all over the place
Wondering if it's actually necesasry

well, coworkers also said it was too late to remove it :)

Has anyone had luck making a top-down 2D game?

Define luck
I had a really nice cool thing where all of my data got represented in a nice lean json structure and could be accessed and changed with super limited amounts of work
Now there are models, super long function names, and everything all over the place
I feel like I'm working on a java project right now :( - well kinda am - grails

5:20 PM
god, grails

I've made a bunch of 2d games

I very nearly only work in 2D top-down

I've worked in all sorts of 2D but haven't completed anything :P
Usually my art doesn't get past rectangles. Hopefully that will change soon.
@Hjorthenify was there a bigger question in there? :P

Define "top-down 2D game" :P
Zelda like? Original Red Alert like?

Sorry.. Im currently writing an assignment so maybe it was not the best time to ask such question :P
Im asking this because I am currently working on a top-down 2D game for fun and I wanted to know if I was going to hit a big fat hard wall in the middle of development, for whatever reason that I hadn't considered :)

@Spart
@SpartanDonut My art is a bit past that, but only because I design it using vector graphics xD

5:33 PM
Haha nice

@SpartanDonut What's wrong with rectangles?

rectangles can be so square

Well we don't really know what you've considered or not. Either way its game development and is full of such walls so expect them anyway :P

@William'MindWorX'Mariager They don't make very good wheels

It's a personality problem of mine... I lose motivation when I don't see my idea coming to form... so I work on art, suck at it, and lose even more motivation!

5:34 PM
@Hjorthenify Since it's for fun don't worry about it. If you hit a wall, you learn more :D

If you hit a wall you just come to chat for discussion, or the main site for questions... we'll also answer questions but if its a good one get some rep out of it :D

original red alert?

@Hjorthenify Walls will be hit. I've hit I don't know how many in the last two weeks on the golf game at work.

@Noctrine Yeah I'm having great fun with it, which is why I hate this assignment that I am forced to do...

I lose motivation if I cant come up with a new idea for the game :/
Actually I dont know what I add next. Fix my flamethrower or add lightning.. :P

lately, my most fun in game dev has been anticipating those mid-dev problems and architecting them away early
weird, i know

5:39 PM
Ahh.. I need to do that as well soon. Using SDL from C++, which means I gotta create a few more wrappers than I got now.. Sometime in the future
pbrd.co/1gXJWEV what do you guys think?
... Yes its a flamethrower at the size of a pistol. Deal with it. xD

Just don't suffer from analysis paralysis!

^

naw, not analysis paralysis. agile.

My initial thought is that with your ray cast the fire looks like a giant feather but otherwise not bad. I don't think the grass fits the art style but I understand works in process :)

If you mean the green line, then its only there because its run from debug :P

5:43 PM
say, you need some stub data for your level. Don't code it into your main loop, fetch it from a method in a shell dataloader class (whichs return hardwired data). Then later you swap that out for a data file loader. doesn't slow you down, doesn't screw you up later

Also the grass is there because I needed grass.. It's from the first page on google when you search for grass..
stub data..?

The image does make me think of Jurassic Park for the SNES a bit

ground geometry, tile placement, that kind of thing

Yeah, I really dislike grails.

Ahh its not coded into my main loop, but in the PNG files itself :P

5:50 PM
30 PEOPLE!

anyone know how to display the user's best score like in flappy bird? I'm not sure if it shows per session or if it is saved somehwere.

i don't know, it was just extremely satisfying to come back to an incomplete part of my project, see what needed to be done to finish it, and not spiral into severe depression immediately

P E R F E C T RECTANGLE, we 30 people make! I am so honored to be the 30th person in the room

@erebel55 use an http cookie
if you live in Europe, warn your users about your nefarious attempt to save data in a logical way

"Rock Paper Shotgun uses cookies. For some reason we are now obliged to notify you of this fact. Not that you care."

5:53 PM
Is that really a law? I can kind of understand but at the same time... ugh
Can you just put it on a legal page or something?

How that law came to pass is beyond me.
I thought it was just a regional thing.

yeah, that Eurocookie law really make me feel better about American legislators. That's saying something.

And who enforces it?

that's been EU directive for years

@BlueBug Doesn't that depend on the resolution? :P

5:55 PM
oh no... don't... you are breaking my dream #William'MindWorX'Mariager

Yeah, my user icon rows at 12 wide. no rectangle for me

My user area shows 21 gravatars wide :P

collapsed on the ground

Directive 2002/58 on Privacy and Electronic Communications, otherwise known as E-Privacy Directive, is an EU directive on data protection and privacy in the digital age. It presents a continuation of earlier efforts, most directly the Data Protection Directive. It deals with the regulation of a number of important issues such as confidentiality of information, treatment of traffic data, spam and cookies. This Directive has been amended by Directive 2009/136, which introduces several changes, especially in what concerns cookies, that are now subject to prior consent. Subject-matter and S...
@SpartanDonut

(now suffering from life long mental trauma)

5:56 PM
@BlueBug I can see only 29 people
also 8 avatars wide

Yeah its a stupid law from the EU..

11 wide here

11 wide here too

user4704
23, suckas.

anyone rockin' a 4K?
(monitor, not gravatar rows)

6:07 PM
Can get all 29 or 30 if I cheat and stretch across both monitors

dell 23 inch ultra sharp at home
not sure what this is at work
though my mac pro can handle 3 4k monitors
doubt I'd ever do that
though it would make the UI clutter on eve easier to deal with

Chris roberts posted about that on the star citizen forums. "You know why this game own't be on the playstation? Because 3x4K and mantle api!"

14" laptop screen.. Awesome, right?
mantle API was a mistake

how so?

@Almo Dual Screen should be listed as a minimum requirement for that game

6:13 PM
Its an API made specifically for AMD graphic cards. What if nVidia, intel, etc did the same?

Hello @Lasse

hi

How its going with the contest?

@Hjorthenify that's true, but it's ostensibly an open standard that the other manufacturers could implement.

not good, it's kind of broken

6:15 PM
Its sad to see that youre going behind one team after another

those ranks does not matter at all really, what matters most is the final races the bot needs to run

Yes, it seems like you have a build fail?

but our bot can't make it there if it can't run, and it for some reason can't run on the test server

@SpartanDonut hahah :) I don't dual screen it, but when mining I have chat, local chat, North Provi Intel chat, Recruitment Chat, Overview, Drones, and cargo all open

we have no clue why, since it's running fine on my linux box

6:16 PM
when does it break

they might be using some ancient version of mono on the server
right when the game starts, on tick 0
it throws nullreferenceexception

then it is something wrong with something being null in your script

lol no kidding

@Lasse What compitition is this?

@SethBattin Im just against hardware-specific APIs when it comes to to gaming..

hwo

6:18 PM
the problem is that we can't get proper stack trace, and the method it throws it in is huge
@Hjorthenify Hello World Open

I thought you got the line number

@joapet99 and why the hell it does that while it does not throw null on my machine

...
I don't know
It could be libary fail
you know
when the path is incorrect

it's just ridiculous and I'm really getting sick of this damn competition, and now I can't even view the build / run log because all my browsers (chrome, firefox) freezes before I can see them in the automated test runs page

aren't you using any third-party libaries?

6:21 PM
only lib is the json lib they provided us, and it's not that lib which is giving us the exception

@Lasse alas, I can't share the satisfaction of this perfect rectangle with anyone. This ruins my day..

@Lasse what do you know about the error?

But when you defined the path to look for the libary. It doesn't automatically change to your computers path to the libary

@BlueBug You can share it with me :D

hoooe ya! @Hjorthenify <3

6:22 PM
<3

@Hjorthenify I know it's nullreferenceexception thrown in the update method of one class

@Hjorthenify assuming that all the manufacturers could agree on it, i'm in favor of them being in control of the standard with less overhead. rather than building drivers that fulfill graphics lib apis that game devs target, they could implement the graphics libs directly and eliminate a layer from the process. Maybe that's just forgetting history to think that might actually work.

and we have three people (including me) trying to solve it

Q: Visual Studio Minimize regions shortcut?

PICyourBrainIs there a shortcut key in Visual Studio that will minimize all of the regions or + signs so that I don't have to go through and click each one individually?

gotta love SO for stuff like this.
top google hit, instant correct answer.

That would be true, but I doubt it will ever be like that. :P

@Lasse did you try to ... add null checks? :3

6:26 PM
oh no
it collapses not only regions, but all functions as well :(

@Hjorthenify have you breathed today?

Almo, build your own extension that does it. :)

@Lasse Haha im just messing with you.. Im guessing this is java?

nope, it's C#

6:28 PM
Why doesn't the compiler return a line number

Ah. Is there try & catch structures in C# ?

yeh, but it does not matter. the stack trace is not giving anything useful

SharePoint Designer has this shortcut, Ctrl+Shift+; I believe, which will select the current tag (opening and closing) and all content inside. I couldn't figure out how to do the same in VS. I thought I find a solution but then it never worked.

I bet it's not a bug in our code, but instead in the mono version the server is running on
why? because debian uses ancient version of mono
Debian 7.0 (Wheezy): 2.10.8.1

Damn

6:31 PM
Latest Version: 3.4.0

Are you using a hashset?

no

Alright.. Ill stop pretending that I can help then :)

thanks though
I'm mostly just ranting here, not really looking for help
I don't expect to get help for using such ancient version

Well.. The reason I asked is that I found this article aclassicgeek.blogspot.dk/2012/10/mono-and-fluentnhibernate.html check your templates perhaps?

6:38 PM
@Lasse be aware that if the server fails then the program will not tell you.
until you are going to get information from the server

are you talking about the test environment or the local running with test servers?

wooo - no more requirejs

@Lasse test environment

then I have no idea what you are talking about

wait no... local running with test servers

6:40 PM
lol
I'm talking about the automated test run server

Many times I haven't got any errror messages
so it is working when using test servers?

yes

...
I have problem with building too but for me it can't find my main class

when I run it locally on my mono 3.4.0 it runs fine, it also runs fine on .net on windows and on mono 3.3.0 on windows
@joapet99 try xbuild

?
@Lasse I'm using java

6:43 PM
oh, right, forgot that D:

just wondering if you've run it locally with the ancient version of mono
that would be a test :)

Error: Could not find or load main class noobbot.Main

I'm not going to uninstall my mono just to install ancient version of it >_>

I have tried to change noobbot/Main to src/main/java/noobbot/Main
lets see if that works

oh there's actually package for that

6:46 PM
you can have multiple versions of mono installed at the same time

for...?

I wonder if it would fit nicely along with 3.4
:: mono2 and mono are in conflict (mono). Remove mono?
nope

:(
I know I installed multiple versions here, but it was with Xamarin I think

on windows?

yes

6:47 PM
it's real hell trying to use multiple instances of them on windows too

maybe I'm thinking of different versions of MonoDevelop

it's hard enough trying to use mono instead of .net too

:D
since we do Unity here, I think the base install for our puters gets that figured out

apparantly the server is using debian unstable, which has mono 3.0.6
it's still ancient

heh

6:55 PM
@Lasse The weird things with my error is that it builds perfectly with no errors but do not seem to find the main class afterwards!

you need to tell java where the main class is
