7:00 PM
@Cindy We'll see what happens. Statistically speaking I'm sort of approaching the second half of my life, so still room for improvenent there ^_^

@Stephie Hopefully it will improve with time. :)

Or just a better way of handling it - practice makes perfect, right?
So what's on the menu today?

I never seemed to get enough practice!
@Stephie Believe it or not I haven't settled on dinner yet. Can't seem to decide.

@Cindy What time is it?

3 pm.

7:08 PM
Good. That's still easy unless you decide to drag out your slow cooker.

Yeah, I have enough time. Just need to decide. I'm thinking about a med salad.

@Stephie the first one. I get it, but I am less dynamic than she is so tend not to leap out of my seat

@Cindy you can enjoy something deliciously salty for me!

It is a tall person's affliction :( ;)

so mrs the tall is literally tall?

7:09 PM
@rumtscho Will do! :)

@Cindy great!

@ElendilTheTall So 165 cm is tall! Good! And I was always worrying about being too short...

something with parma ham, or olives, or parmesan. Or maybe salmon.

@rumtscho All good!

and because I gave up alcohol too, have a nice wine with it.
The world must stay in balance :P

7:12 PM
@rumtscho I can't do that part. @Stephie can pick up that end. ;)

oh, you are a nondrinker too?
I was thinking that I'm getting to know a surprising amount of nondrinkers
until I read some statistic that on average, 1 adult in 3 does not drink

The sober shall inherit the earth!

I just grew up in a nonrepresentative culture

@rumtscho I have enjoyed occasionally and I'm not against it but alcohol = sugar. With my trygliceride levels so high it could be dangerous.

7:15 PM
@ElendilTheTall ?

<lifts a small glass of elderberry wine> To statistical balance!

@Cindy hmm? Alcohol is nothing like sugar, biochemically

(And our health. It seems to need it. We are an ailling lot.)

although I don't know how it acts on triglycerides specifically

@Cindy typo on mobile
@Stephie hmmm?

7:19 PM
@ElendilTheTall Screw logic where vanity comes into play...

Mrs the Tall is 180cm

@rumtscho Pehaps I should have said carbs rather than sugar.

@ElendilTheTall I know, but I'm not. So I decided to skip a few rules of inverse logic. If A->B, so why not B->A.

@Stephie ah, I see
yes, you're very tall <pats Stephie's wickle head>
<straightens back up>

@Stephie How tall are you?

7:21 PM
@Cindy ah, I see. So you can have alcohol, but not wine or beer or other drinks with carbs?

<kicks knee of condescending poster (doesn't reach higher up)>

@rumtscho Yes.

<holds Stephie at arm's length to prevent further unwarranted attacks>

I actually miss the drink variety more than alcohol itself
There was a time when getting drunk was important, but this was just because I believed that this is the only way to be a real teenager

@rumtscho I understand. I wouldn't drink anything just to get alcohol. I would only drink something because I like it.

7:26 PM
@rumtscho apparently 1 in 5 British adults don't drink

but being around the rich, dark beers which I like, and which are almost impossible to get where I live, and not getting one of them, that's a sad experience. Not powerfully sad, but I do get a bit of longing.

@Cindy this conversion tool says 5 foot five inches.

@Stephie Same as me! (Stretched by 1/4".)

Below average O.O
:P

It is a bit complicated with me liking alcohol, because I taste it in the harsh way. So it was certainly an acquired taste. But I had learned to appreciate the unique combinations.

7:28 PM
@ElendilTheTall average is boooooooring!
(as the statistical outlier should know ;-)

I've heard that there are people for whom a single malt tastes the same way it smells, although it does burn on the tongue/throat for them too.

@rumtscho ???

@Stephie alcohol. Apparently, super tasters taste not only alkaloid bitterness, they also perceive alcohol differently.

@Stephie all the fun is over here on the right of the bell curve, baby

@ElendilTheTall But @Cindy and I pack a mean punch per cm! And lenghth isn't everything. Didn't they tell you?

7:32 PM
@Stephie I'm sure. You are highly concentrated.

@ElendilTheTall Like an espresso.
:-)

@ElendilTheTall you beanpoles are nature's experiments. And not all experiments are successful.

@rumtscho beanpole implies tall and skinny
I haven't been that since I was about 14

While I was at the bank I checked with them to see if there is an easier way to make cash deposits without hauling my butt to them.

/s/beanpoles/wardrobes

7:34 PM
No, I have to haul my butt to them.

@Jolenealaska VA gives you a pension in cash?

So asked if there is a way to avoid a particular intersection.
No, I don't get a VA pension. But my dog training business is mostly cash.

oh, you started a business again? I've been away for too long indeed!

I haven't made a profit yet, I'm still paying for a few items I need, but soon I'll have to report income to Social Security.
It's just a little side thing, for a little extra pocket money. I am limited by my walking difficulty, so I've decided that I what I really need is an apprentice.

@Jolenealaska speaking of which, tickets are booked and bags packed. See you on thursday!

7:38 PM
YAY!

@ElendilTheTall oh, you're going on a trip?
I have no idea where it is, but have a nice trip.

I wish

@rumtscho silly. I am kidding on that I am jojo's apprentice

@Jolenealaska if @ElendilTheTall doesn't fit the bill, what kind of apprentice did you have in mind?

@ElendilTheTall ahahaha, and I fell for it
or not "it", but for the idea that you are seriously going somewhere

7:41 PM
yes, you foolish fool!
@Stephie and why wouldn't i fit the bill? I am completely over my dog treat addiction!

I am an extremely skilled dog trainer, but there is a physicality to it that is difficult for me. Plus, dogs that stay with me have to be walked. Especially once it gets icy, that becomes dicey.

and your business can make enough money to support a coworker?
I know it's different in the USA, but still sounds risky

@ElendilTheTall <is seriously biting tongue to avoid silly joke about dogs and tall objects>

@Stephie haha

I would love to find a person who wants to learn how to train dogs, and is willing to accept crap pay and and having to do the crap (no pun intended) work in return for an education in dog training,

7:44 PM
hmm

@rumtscho it can be, quite easily. My complex is huge and it is also one of the few places that accepts dogs and is affordable in Anchorage.

in Germany, this system is entrenched in law

The place is crawling with dogs.

@rumtscho example?

@Stephie I meant Ausbildung in general. I don't know if a dog trainer is an Ausbildungsjob though.
the problem is that, of course, the demand here is so high because there are tons of jobs which you can't do without getting a diploma for them from this kind of training, or if you try to, you get paid less than the guys with the diploma, and can't get promoted.

7:47 PM
An apprentice position would be very part time/as needed in the beginning. his pay would be deducted from any income I have to report to Social Security. So, it would be financially an easy transition for me to make.
keep in mind that I ran a dog training business in Maryland that did very well. I had a little place in a strip mall and every veterinarian in town recommended me.
I know the pitfalls.

"deducted from any income" sounds cool.

I fell in every one of them. I think that's kind of how I learn.

@Jolenealaska Oh, I have no doubt that you can do it well. I know you've done it before.

@rumtscho Closest on "Hundetrainer" would be "Tierpfleger", but I'm pretty sure you don't need anything "official" except good insurance here, too.

Oh I did finish my story about getting to the bank. Yes there is an easier way to get there, I have to go through a parking lot of a little burger joint.

7:50 PM
@Stephie I don't know about Tierpfleger, but I could ask, my colleague used to be one until he developed an allergy and decided he'd prefer a job with computers.
But I know for example for painters
you can only stay on the lowest rung of the ladder if you don't have the Ausbildung
and then, you get paid less than the other guys on the same lowest rung.
I think you can only be a Malerhelfer then, not a full Maler.

As it turns out, I went to this burger joint several years ago. I really like it! so, it is now my guilty pleasure. As I "type" this I'm eating a bacon cheeseburger. From now on grabbing junk food will be my guilty pleasure when I have to haul my ass to the bank.

A Tierpfleger, as we have them, does no training, by the way. But I guess that the guys at the zoo are also Tierpfleger, and they certainly do a lot of this kind of work

@rumtscho this will be a much less formal agreement. Hopefully I can find somebody in the complex who wants to learn and is very flexible.

I was in the Wilhelma when I was in Stuttgart, and once I reached the apes, I didn't want to go out

@Jolenealaska nudge nudge, wink wink

7:54 PM
there was all kind of information there how they take in orphaned gorilla children from other zoos because they have so good experience handling them, and what the animal carers do with them
but I must say, I stayed most with the bonobos
they had two babies there, and the mother was cuddling one of them
they were really fascinating. So human like.

bonobos have sex almost constantly

@ElendilTheTall A myth...
Frequently, yes, but not "constantly".

@Jolenealaska as far as I can tell while being an outsider to the US workforce market, you can probably find someone.

he has to be over 18, bondable, and serious. It is no little thing to hand over a dog that belongs to somebody else. I had a dog in my care killed once. (broken leash, hit by car)

@Stephie well, yes, that may have been a tad hyperbolic

7:56 PM
So @rumtscho, you liked the new ape house?

@Stephie yes. I didn't know it is new, I'd never seen Wilhelma before. I had to watch them inside, there were none outside.

@Jolenealaska Which rules out the typical Highschool kid walking dogs for pocket money...

For the record, the bonobos weren't having sex, but they might have been sex segregated.
the mother's genitalia were impressive, but maybe it only struck me as unusual because I've never had a close look at a bonobo before.
this was the only sex-related part of the display

@rumtscho If we are talking about the large building halfway up the hill which you can basically walk around, yes, that's really new.

I would actually love to hire the typical high school kid walking dogs for pocket money, and I probably will over the holidays ( I imagine I will have more pet sitting than I can handle then).
But I can't bond a minor.

8:00 PM
@Stephie I didn't pay attention to hills and such. It was a building for apes only, and indeed large. With spacious outside playgrounds, and several "cages" inside for each of the two species, bonobo and gorilla.

Since the pet care aspect of the business involves me having keys to other apartments, I need to add any permanent employees to my bond.

But the gorillas were still lounging in the nests.
@Jolenealaska "bond" is a legal thing?
if Anchorage has a college, then it sounds like a decent job for a student

Yes, a bond is an insurance policy. It pays if I or anybody employed by me steals from or otherwise defraud the client.
UAA (University of Alaska Anchorage) is nearby. I'm sure this complex has several students.

Having someone from your complex is probably convenient, but not the only option

I'm putting the cart before the horse though, kind of thinking in advance. it is only in the last few days that I feel fairly recovered from my sepsis/ICU experience.

8:03 PM
universities tend to have a central mechanism for matchmaking jobs to students

So I have not yet advertised. My current clients are just people I have met walking their dogs. It's cool though, because now I have references. I am actually going to put flyers out today.

and a student willing to work for little money is in general a bit less suspicious than a standard adult willing to do so.
@Jolenealaska Oh, I wasn't aware it was still weighing you down
glad to hear it's back to normal now

when I get to that point, my first action will be just to put help-wanted flyers in the six mail rooms in this complex.
@rumtscho big time, until the last few days.
The timing is actually pretty good, a lot of people from Anchorage travel outside for Thanksgiving and/or Christmas.

what's a dog trainer's capacity?
how many dogs can you care for without going crazy?

@rumtscho it depends upon a lot of factors. Is the dog staying in his apartment with me going to him? Or is he staying with me? how often does he need to be walked? how well is he housebroken?
does he get along with other dogs?

8:09 PM
oh, I didn't know these details

Jay
probably might have to look into the rule about how many dogs are allowed in your apartment at any given time

so, a dog can be staying with you all time, and the owner only visits now and then?

am I solving a specific problem ( like barking at passing people in the hallway), or does the client want me to train the dog completely?
@rumtscho I love "board and train", also known as Doggy Boot Camp.
if possible, I try to schedule hard-core training during a time that the owner is going to be away anyway. So, he gets boarding and training killing two birds with one stone.
The holidays are awesome for that.

Love the term Doggy Booot Camp!

@Jay There is no rule like that, because it is never come up before. As long as I stay under the radar ( something I'm pretty good at) my capacity is limited by how many I can handle.

8:13 PM
Woot, 6 minutes

Jay
@ElendilTheTall What 6 minutes?

Rubik's cube

"Doggy boot camp" is my favorite way to train, because it isn't any work. If I just treat the dogs as if they are my own for a week.
Years ago (1991), I graduated first in my class from what was at the time the country's only fully accredited school for dog trainers.
Since then I have worked with dogs almost constantly. I even did dog training in Chickaloon.
Modifying dog behavior comes so naturally to me that it isn't even work. I'm just enjoying the dog.

Jay
@Jolenealaska if it was only that easy with men

@Jay it can be :)
but not usually.
Like dogs, men are easier to manipulate if you manage to convince them that everything you're trying to get them to do is in their best interest.
doggy yum-yum = sex
that reminds me.
I need to find out exactly when Marv is coming through and borrow a stepstool for the occasion.

8:26 PM
A stepstool?

I've got quite the honey-do list.
yeah, I need to put some hooks in the ceiling and I've got a big old TV I want lifted. That'll probably take two people (and one of them can't be me).
I've got one more little errand to run, then I am going to spend all day perfecting my flyers and business cards.
If I play my cards right, I can make a lot of money between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day.
"A lot" being a relative term.
My goal is to make enough money to put a down payment on a real car and unload this piece of crap that I'm driving.
The VA will modify a car to my particular accessibility needs, I'd rather have those modifications done to a car that I plan to drive forever.

@jolenealaska I can help you with fliers and business cards if you so wish

That would be awesome!

For God's sake don't do anything in publisher or the like

publisher is what I have and know how to use.
Although, the business cards are really being a pain in the ass.
What I really need is my old logo ( Ripley's results). I have had no luck reproducing it.

8:38 PM
@ElendilTheTall I'm not a big fan of publisher. What do you use?

It is the words "Ripley's Results" in Cooper Black font curved to follow a circle along the top. In the same font and same size it's "Pet Services" straight ( not curved) along the bottom of the circle (outside of the circle). In the center of the circle is a paw print.
I'll dig up the mess I have so far.

@Jolenealaska IIRC BESW does that type of work.

@jolenealaska email it all to me, I will hook you up
@Cindy the Adobe suite

crap, I guess it was so awful that I nuked what I have so far. So I'll redo it, just to show you what the logo is supposed to be.

@ElendilTheTall Aah. Much better.

8:44 PM
I have a very strong mental image of it, because it was my logo back when.

@Jolenealaska Per chance do you have a pic?

I need to run this errand and get it over with, then I will draw the logo as well as I can using publisher and send it to you.
No, if I had a picture it would be easy!

@Jolenealaska Okay. Just a long shot idea. :)

@jolenealaska sure, fire it over. As a jpeg, not a publisher file. And all the other details you want as well

as soon as I finish this little errand I will be back. If anybody is still here I will post what I can create quickly. It's really pretty simple, so I imagine it will be easy with the right software.
BRB

8:48 PM
@ElendilTheTall You're most certainly more adept than I as it has been a couple of years since I did anything like this but, if I can be of any help, let me know.

Oh god. Copper black is a horrible font
Cooper
@jolenealaska are you averse to a bit of innovation?

I'm off for now. Must get to preparing dinner. See you later. :)

Tomorrow :)

9:26 PM
Not averse, but I do want it to feel like the old one.
OK, errand is done so I'll draw the logo as well as I can quickly and in Publisher. BRB

There's a graphics design stackexchange.

9:46 PM
That is cheesy, but it's close.

@jolenealaska OK. We can keep it classic while avoiding nasty fonts :)

I want the font to be fat and round like that one.

Maybe turn it sideways so it doesn't look like a face.

@jolenealaska I'll send you some choices to mull over. Tomorrow. For now it is bed time.

I don't see a face, but the paw print is just random clipart, anything like it would be fine.
@ElendilTheTall Of course sweetie. I won't print the flyers until we talk later, because I do want to match the font.

9:49 PM
May I ask why?

just for title stuff, for consistency's sake.

In my opinion it screams 'I made this at home!'
'title stuff'?

You know, like my name on the business card.

Do you have business cards already made?

no, I've been farting around with it but I haven't had anything that I wanted to waste my limited stock of blank business cards on.
so I'll work on those things today and talk to you tonight.

9:53 PM
OK... So why does the logo font have to match a font that isn't being used anywhere else? :)
I will make you a business card. It will be, how you say, fantastic

@ElendilTheTall mostly because that's the way I've always done it. My mind is open, but I do have things that have worked well for me in the past.

OK. Well, we'll see what we can do. G'night

my current stack of business card stock has a blue border (that's just what they had one day when I was in the office supply store), so I want to use it up, but I'm not married to it long-term.
I'll scan what I can create today, and I look forward to seeing you tonight.
Good night.
@FaheemMitha Yes, If I was doing graphic design for the sake of graphic design I'd be interested in the stack, but this is just a one time quickie thing.
once it's done ( and it really is pretty simple) it's done.

@Jolenealaska Ok
