PDF/TikZ make pretty nice SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) images. I've never tried them for logos, but I imagine it would work well.

3 hours later…
4:15 AM
^
I've got techie questions about that.
Hi Stephie! Lurking?

5:16 AM
@Jolenealaska Sort of - logged in, then every family member < 5 feet needed my attention...
Good morning!

Good evening to you!

Ranting about politics is usually your domain, but current news here have me foaming at the mouth. The refugee wave gave rise to some nasty nationalistic groups, demonstrations, the works. Now the first local politicians step down due to threats against them.

It's like this: I am proud to be from Iowa for a lot of reasons. Not the least of those reasons is the fact that Iowa was very early to completely legalize gay marriage. The Iowa Supreme Court decided that to do otherwise violated the Iowa guarantee of equal opportunity under the law (that's always been my favorite, most logical argument) ...
3 Supreme Court judges were ousted the next election.
It doesn't seem to matter where you are, some people are just idiots.
brb..I have to reboot

5:31 AM
Yeah. But in this case, it smacks a lot of the first bits of Nazi aera. Not that I'm blindly saying that integrating a million or so of refugees is easy for a society, especially as they are from completely different societal structures and yes, there is a real risk of groups like IS recruiting among young lonely men. But nothing justifies that. That our chancellor apparently has no plan (sort of symptomatic, imho) doesn't help either.

I want to hear more...don't go away! :)

I won't - minor 2 just left the house ;-)

Morning wimmin

That refugee wave (and not all qualify as political refugees, many are just trying to have "a better life and make money") has created weird problems: Last weekend I heard on the radio that camp beds are not to be had here any more - all sold out. They get ordered in the US and China now and some comunities placed large orders of bunk beds at IKEA (clever move, IMHO), so that the cheap varieties are out of stock, too.
Morning, @ElendilTheTall!
Am just ranting about the refugee situation here and the fools that creep out of their dark holes with zhe situation.

Oh. That's heavy stuff before 7am

5:38 AM
Hey, couldn't we send a few over to your Island?
@ElendilTheTall No, but the first bit of news was a local mayor stepping down because of right-wing threats on his life for a planned refugee housing. So I started the day fuming.

Hmmm, I thought it looked stormy to the east
So by fools I take it you mean fascists?

You bet!
But for political correctness you can't name them this here. Loosing WWII lead to weird loops and bends in language.

Dickheads?

Even before the current refugee wave these were a (then local) nuissance and have been at the helm of resistance. And of course try to expand. As they have no "clear connection" (ha!) to the fascist groups but pose as "concerned upright citizens" they get a lot of attention and support.
Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the Occident (German: Patriotische Europäer gegen die Islamisierung des Abendlandes), abbreviated PEGIDA and Pegida, is a German anti-Islam political organisation founded in Dresden in October 2014. It organized weekly demonstrations from October 2014 to February 2015 against what it considers the Islamisation of the Western world, calling for more restrictive immigration rules, particularly for Muslims. It seeks to alter German immigration legislation so that it becomes similar to Australian immigration programs and Canadian immigration categories...
Makes me cringe and ashamed.

On mobile I see a group of people matching with red and white flags...
With a black logo
What does that remind me of...
But still, while these cretins are everywhere these days, I think the prevailing attitude is one of tolerance.

5:49 AM
@ElendilTheTall no, no, no, just a coincidence.... Of course this reminds everyone with an ounce of knowledge.
@ElendilTheTall Yes, tolerance and support is high atm. But once one stupid young man oversteps a boundary - and it is bound to happen, hell might break loose. Disappointed goody two-shoes and such. There are a lot of undercurrents and tension. Merkel is mum as always. I suspect not because she doesn't want to talk about her plans but because she hasn't any. A lot of second-row politicians and inner critics seeing their chance. And winter is coming. Literally.
<steps down from soap box>

Hmm. Well, we shall see what happens

So what's the news elsewhere?

Hmm, that ridiculous url probably won't work
Did you hear about the aunt who sued her 8 year old nephew for negligence because he jumped into her arms in excitement when she arrived at his birthday party?

I hadn't. (The link worked for me) At least she got her fifteen minutes of internet f/shame...

Unbelievable
His mother died last year as well
Way to kick a kid while he's down Auntie Jen

6:01 AM
I see the next lawsuit on the horizon because another child didn't jump into his auntie's arms, causing severe emotional pain. Hey, here's the news: kids are unpredictable. If you can't deal with it, stay away!

Indeed
Life has one simple rule that covers most situations
Don't be a dick
In fact, that's Elendil's Second Law

@Stephie Do you know of MS St Louis?

@Jolenealaska Just looked it up. Disgusting.

Refugees are tricky. I think sometimes it's only easy to differentiate between refugees and wannabe immigrants in hindsight.
I find the fact that we turned away that particular ship at that particular time very shameful.

Hi @Stephie. I don't understand why Germany agreed to allow so many people in, in the first place. That's quite unusual, to start with.
I mean, mostly countries don't. At least not in such large numbers.

6:16 AM
@FaheemMitha history + them literally coming in droves?

@Stephie I don't know the history. Was some obligation incurred?
I mean, I think I read a couple of news articles, but didn't quite get the point.

Hm. How to explain...

hmmmm

And people emigrate from poor to rich countries if they can. And probably in large numbers. It's like water running downhill.
@Stephie Don't feel obliged.

Heya. Is this the right place to ask whether something's on topic?

6:20 AM
@FaheemMitha Well, it's complicated. I am thinking...
@JourneymanGeek absolutely! Welcome!

ahh excellent
I saw this at the local store
Would a question asking what it is, and what to do with it on topic?
I admit, I'm just too amused by the name, but we have had a few interesting experiences with strange beans.

Probably yes, but I suggest you check out this:

Q: "Moose mints" origin

user12707This question is not about the preparation of a food item, so if it does not fit well on this site, please let me know where I might post them instead. I have seen many places selling "moose mints" with picture of a moose on the box. Is this just a word play on "loose mints", or does "moose min...

Looks a lot like a variation on the theme.

ahh
cool

Totally different
Apparently foul are fava beans

ahh
That I've heard of!
However in the context of a certain famous fictions psychotic psychologist.

6:28 AM
Yes
...and a nice Chianti

@JourneymanGeek the pack wouldn't have a standardized ingredient list somewhere? Either hinting at something "chocolatey" or, if lacking, really meaning fowl = fava? And in which section did you find it? Sweets or legumes?

@Stephie: shelf of iranian spices.
.... I forgot to check the back
(I was distracted! And chuckling!)

@JourneymanGeek that explains it. See:
Ful medames (Arabic: فول مدمس‎, fūl midammis IPA: [fuːl meˈdæmmes]; alternate spellings include ful mudammas, as well as foule mudammes), or simply fūl is an Egyptian dish of cooked fava beans served with vegetable oil, cumin, and optionally with chopped parsley, garlic, onion, lemon juice and chili pepper. It is a staple meal in Egypt, especially in the northern cites of Cairo and Gizah. Ful medames is also a popular meal in Sudan and is a common part of the cuisines of Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Israel, Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Yemen, Palestine and Saudi Arabia. == History == Some...

6:32 AM
ahh!
And poor transliteration!

@JourneymanGeek ???
Ok, off to search the <expletive> cat...

@Stephie Hannibal Lector, I think. Silence of the Lambs?
"I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti." Something like that.

@FaheemMitha Oh. Never watched that one.

@Stephie Don't. Though Ms. Foster has a strong performance.

Ha! New it! Under the covers of minor 2's bed.

6:42 AM
I disagree wholeheartedly with Faheem. It's a great film.
And yes, that is the reference.

That cat wanted to be either a groundhog or a human, methinks.

@Stephie Why is your cat hiding?
Are you trying to give her/him a bath?
We had a little toy poodle once. That was her number one reason for hiding. She didn't like baths.
But she was a neurotic little thing generally. Kind of like a human, really.

@FaheemMitha A combination of fun and warmth, probably. He's certainly not shy. And I would never give a cat a bath unless it was a life-threatening condition like him covered in something poisonous.

@Stephie Hannibal Lector, Silence of the lambs.

@Stephie Oh. They don't like baths either, then?

6:45 AM
There's a line where he mentions serving liver with fava beans and chianti.

A few days ago, he was nowhere to be found. Until son sat on the lower bunk of their bed and looked up:

Maybe he just likes the dark ;p

In the Oscars, Silence of the Lambs won Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Screenplay.

Nothing to be seen from the top:

6:47 AM
@Jolenealaska ok, ok, ok. I might consider it. Just not too much into psycho-horror.

It's not a "horror" film at all, but it is suspenseful and there is some brief gore.

@FaheemMitha "don't like" is the understatement of the centrury, IMHO. Dogs like to swim and play with water (most do), cats might dip their paws in to catch a fish, but that's probably it.

It's worth a look if only to get the references! it's one of those films that almost everybody has seen, so things like fava beans take on a whole new meaning.
the gory scene is the aftermath, I don't think any violence is actually shown (please correct me if I'm wrong). The gory part kind of "looks away from it", that is not at all what this movie is about.
Jodie Foster did a great job, but Anthony Hopkins was remarkable.
I was just the right age to play the girl in peril, that was my fantasy role :)
"Get me out of here you fucking bitch!" :)

@Pureferret I've heard of that breed's affinity for water.
they didn't get the memo.

6:58 AM
@Pureferret Some do, yes, but the average run-of-the mill garden variety doesn't. Mine certainly not...

Bonus climbing fish

On rainy days he wants to be toweled off whe he comes inside. Started as a "I don't want paw prints everywhere" and has evolved to a full body-rub.

"Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid."

@Pureferret Another one who didn't get the memo ;-)

@Stephie Gosh dang nature not behaving :p

7:01 AM
God's plan
<sarcasm>

@Stephie lol. Memo

Hey! That's my LOL!

You snooze you lose, Brown
Track of the Day:
That is an unfortunate face, but the track rocks

Nice! I'm playing fast and loose with my data right now, my Internet Ripper-offer has been shipped, I'm hopeful that it will work.

Internet ripper offer?

7:10 AM
An antenna the size of a phone book to Nab the free WiFi from the other side of anchorage

Or 400 feet from my apartment (best current estimate)

Other track of the day:
Mrs the Tall has been playing it on the pianny

@JourneymanGeek my complex hosts a "wifi cafe", I justify my larcenous ways with creative application of the Americans With Disabilities Act.

Backed up by Messrs Smith and Wesson

Or the prophet/mountain approach.

7:15 AM
lol
I need to dig out my strainer antenna

@ElendilTheTall I don't actually have that anymore. I am gunless.

My local not really the party block office has free wifi I can use legally, and its in LOS
I wouldn't use it normally but it would be fun.

@JourneymanGeek So you and @Jolenealaska can compare notes!

(There's these things called resident's committees here. They're run by the People's Association, which is vaguely associated with the government)

the Wi-Fi in my complex is LOS too, and the distance is well within specs of the antenna. my Internet usage tends to run at night, so I doubt I will be competing with anybody and I further doubt that anyone will notice.

7:19 AM
lol
25 floors down
not sure if I can angle a window tho

ripe for the picking

Mine's closer ;p
I probably could have cropped that slightly tighter ;p

7:34 AM
It looks really odd in that photo.
But I see it on Google.
It does look like that!
Now that I have posted an actual picture of where I live, all that's left for me to post is my Social Security number and bra size.

lol
Its a pretty big building tho
Its for for me. If you are in my neighbourhood with a picture of my dog... I'm pretty easy to find.
Everyone knows my dog ;p

The complex is huge, probably the biggest in Alaska.
I'm working on a tell-all autobiography, so privacy issues are kind of moot.

@Stephie Then I have to wonder how they stay clean.
Maybe they use lots of powder and perfume.

@FaheemMitha Have you ever known a cat?

@Jolenealaska I've met a few.

7:42 AM
They are constantly cleaning themselves.
They use their tongue, specifically engineered for the purpose.

@Jolenealaska Well, it would have to reach lots of places. But Ok.

It does.

@Jolenealaska Fair enough.

Those parts that they can't reach (like their face), they clean with their paws and tongue.

7:49 AM
they also groom each other that way.

@Stephie That's an impressive feat of hiding. Our little dog wasn't that good.

8:04 AM
@FaheemMitha Still think it's not "hiding" in the "don't want to be seen" sense, more "it's so cozy". Or playful, sometimes. There are wiggly human toes hidden under the sheets. At least he did this when he was really small.

She used to hide under a desk when it was time for her bath. And it was always the same desk. She was a bright little thing, but didn't apply her mind.
@Stephie Ah. Cute.
I never did figure out how she knew it was bath time, though.

@Jolenealaska I spot a red herring

@FaheemMitha By the same method she figured "vet visit" and "doggy treat"?
Lots of tiny signals...

intercepted and decoded by a special device in her collar

@Stephie My parents didn't really believe in doctors. So, no vet visits, really. Not sure about doggy treats. She used to like cheese.
But sorry, that wasn't your point.

8:08 AM
@ElendilTheTall That's all it's ever been. I'm actually an adolescent boy in Boise.

With a passion for cooking.

Is it pronounced 'Boys' or 'Boy-zee'?
or dare I say it 'Bwahs'

Boooooseeeee

Bow-ice?

8:10 AM
@Jolenealaska Just don't admit to be <13 or @rumtscho or @Jefromi have to delete you ;-)

boy-zee

ah, but apparently natives say boy-see
it's a shibboleth

@JourneymanGeek So, Singapore? How are things there these days? Crowded, I suppose.

I would pronounce boy-see and boy-zee pretty much the same way <shrug>. Marv is from Boise, so I do know how one native says it.

you're odd
but we knew that anyway :P

8:18 AM
yes

@FaheemMitha: Economy's crap, trains are breaking down, ....

so
here we are

but meh, we'll survive ;p

@JourneymanGeek your name is dashed inconvenient
when I want to message Jojo, as I frequently do, I usually type 'jo' and hit tab

@ElendilTheTall: There used to be a the there once

8:21 AM
now i have to type 'jol'

It was inconvenient ;p

you have reduced my productivity, sir! ಠ_ರೃ

I could leave ;p

@JourneymanGeek yes, that would be good, thank you
;)
:24695142 if you say so
My maths is terrible

@ElendilTheTall I emailed you a picture of my business card blanks. I'm happy to discuss it here just leave my phone number and email blank if you do, even I have my privacy limits :)

8:24 AM
oh, I forgot about that

@JourneymanGeek Bummer. I thought it was supposed to be the Switzerland of the East. Or something.

I gently reminded you :)

ok, got it
hmmm, so those borders are on the cards themselves?

Yes, and I'm broke enough right now that I want to use them up.

@FaheemMitha: Well, at the moment I don't have a job so clearly, its inferior .p

8:27 AM
I like doing graphics programmatically. It's easy to change after the event. And all the lines are perfectly straight, all the curves are perfect, etc. etc. Imperfections trigger my OCD.

I could buy blanks tomorrow if it looks like I should.

well, they're a little limiting. those borders take up a lot of space

@JourneymanGeek Sorry to hear that. Inferior to Switzerland?

i mean, we can work with them, but blank cards would give us a lot more leeway

8:28 AM
Lets pretend they're blank. I can print on the reverse side to actually see what they look like in print.

ok
erm, what was the business called again? the image you uploaded has died
and my coffee has yet to kick in
Ripley's...

@FaheemMitha: We had a Hep C outbreak in a hospital too!
So plausibly

I'll repost it. The business is Ripley's Results.

ah, that's it
if you could spare $9.95 for a year you could get www.ripleysresults.com, which would thus enable you to have 'jolene@ripleysresults.com' - looks much better than a free e-mail address
(it would just forward to your Live address basically)

@JourneymanGeek Well, even Switzerland probably doesn't have 100% employment.

8:32 AM

is the 75x37 the area inside the borders?

@ElendilTheTall I could probably swing that next month.
@ElendilTheTall yes

@Stephie I wasn't aware there was a lower age bar on SE.

@Jolenealaska what is the actual size of the whole card?

@ElendilTheTall: or spend a tiny bit more for hosted email. I think I spend a few dollars a month on namecheap for that. Its nice since you can send email via the addie too
@FaheemMitha: I think 15 or something

8:34 AM
in inches it's 2X3.5

@JourneymanGeek @Stephie said 13 above.

or that
I can never really remember ;p

I actually kind of like the idea of keeping my business email separate since my personal email tends to get cluttered.

@Jolenealaska very doable. I can even knock you together a one page website if you like.

That would be beyond awesome
Can I get that with the email address? for $13?
If so, I'll go ahead and spend it now since every day without business cards is costing me money.

8:36 AM
$2.75 a month, with e-mail

Well shit, even I can afford that.

I think the setup I'm using for dad is ~20 dollars a year for a .com namecheap.com/domains/registration/gtld/com.aspx + namecheap.com/hosting/email.aspx
no hosting tho, its actually a domain for a defunct company my dad used to own which we maintain cause dad uses his old email there for everything

this is $33 a year, with hosting and domain

(so yeah, wherever it is, get the domain, email and stuff, totally worth it ;p)

@FaheemMitha To protect vulnerable minors (and the company) from the dangers of the Internet. We get this case every now and then over at Parenting SE.

8:41 AM

I use Gandi. But they might be a bit more expensive. Seem quite professional, though. They have a relationship with Debian, which is part of why I used them.

Will this include the email address?

@Stephie Yes, someone on U&L pointed me to legal section, where it's stated.
Lots of registrars are quite dodgy.

@Jolenealaska where's it from?

Kualo

8:44 AM
oh, ok... yes, 10 e-mail addresses

cool, I see that now.
ok, let me dig out my carefully difficult to get to plastic.

@FaheemMitha: The story of how I found my current registar is funny....
My paypal account got hacked and someone used it to buy domains (Embarassing!).
Namecheap got in touch with paypal, and the charge was reversed...
when I got around to getting a new registar, and domain names, I went with them
and they're reasonably priced too.

@JourneymanGeek Are, so they are good guys, in your opinion?

@FaheemMitha: Amongst the best
they were also loudly anti sopa.

I've never had much to do with Gandi, but I've also never seen anyone say anything bad about them. I looked. And their web pages don't make me vomit. Which is something.
They one of the big French registrars, I think. Though I don't know much about how Europe handles this stuff.
@JourneymanGeek Ok.
Namecheap is an ICANN-accredited domain registrar and web hosting company, based in Los Angeles, California. It claims to have over 3 million domain names under management. == History == Namecheap was founded by Richard Kirkendall in 2000. In November 2010, it was voted the best domain name registrar in a Lifehacker poll. Again, in September 2012 it was voted as "Most Popular Domain Name Registrar" in Lifehacker polls. In March 2013, Namecheap announced that Bitcoin would be accepted as payment. In May 2014, Namecheap was put on notice due to a breach of their Registrar Accreditation Agreement...
Hmm, mixed things.
And here is Gandi:
Gandi SAS (Gestion et Attribution des Noms de Domaine sur Internet - Management and Allocation of Domain Names on the Internet) is a French company providing domain name registration, web hosting, and related services. The company's main office is in Paris. == History == Gandi was founded as a domain registrar in March 2000 by Valentin Lacambre, Laurent Chemla, Pierre Beyssac and David Nahmias. In 2005, ownership and management was changed to a team led by Stephan Ramoin (formerly of MultiMania/Lycos), and investors Joe White, Eirik Pettersen (co-founders of the online website building service...

8:56 AM
@FaheemMitha: some of those links seem dodgy.

@JourneymanGeek Which ones?

yeah, my old workplace used them

@JourneymanGeek Who? Gandi?
