1:41 AM
@ElendilTheTall that's is a watch for a reasonable price

6 hours later…
7:37 AM
@FaheemMitha linking to a watch on Amazon does not force Jude to buy from there. It is simply a good way of showing the watch, its dollar price, and its features. He can then buy it from wherever he likes.
@Stephie they are all in working condition

Morning @ElendilTheTall, how was your weekend?

@JudeNiroshan very reasonable, and it will last for years provided you look after it.
@Stephie fine thanks, yours?

@ElendilTheTall Productive and fun.

@FaheemMitha seiko make excellent watches. Probably the best in the $100-250 price range.

Hi guys

7:42 AM
We are currently wallpapering our living room, cleared the garden, went hiking and found some mushrooms (both for photos and my pan) and took the kids to the cinema.
Hi@Jolenealaska
(Creatures of habit, are we?)
Seems everyone just popped in basically at the same time...

@Stephie sounds like a German's favourite kind of weekend :)
@jolenealaska mornin'

that made me exhausted just reading it

@Stephie clocking in for the week

@ElendilTheTall Of course. But linking to Amazon India is as much effort, and more directly useful, since Jude could conceivably buy from there. I don't know how much the shipping charges from India are, but I imagine they are not excessive.
@JudeNiroshan Amazon India has Casio watches, of course. But they seem a bit expensive to me.

@Jolenealaska Nah, but we had excellent weather, kids got roped into helping outside and we only papered a bit.

7:44 AM
@Stephie Energetic, aren't we?

A) I wasn't even aware there was an Amazon India B) Jude was talking about USD prices which Amazon US gives and C) I only care so much

@Stephie I'm around all the time (I'm a sad sad creature), but if there is nobody to talk to, I don't post.

@FaheemMitha And I baked apple pie...
So it might have been sugar rush ;-)

I completely forgot that tomorrow is a federal holiday. Perhaps our most ridiculous federal holiday.
tomorrow...I guess that actually means today

Yes
The 'Yay for the guy that didn't actually discover us' Holiday

7:50 AM
Columbus Day. Schoolchildren are still sought taught such garbage about him, including that the scientific community didn't know that the world was round until Columbus didn't make it to India.

@ElendilTheTall Well, (A), now you know. (B) not sure why he was talking US prices. Maybe because he's talking to an international audience? US dollars are (still) some sort of international standard (C) Can't help with that one.:-)
@Stephie Yummy.

@Jolenealaska Still? Sigh...

Happy Random Italian Day anyway Jojo

@ElendilTheTall Agreed. I used to have a Rolex, but they are (a) way overpriced (b) not actually very good watches.
They look mighty purty, though.

@FaheemMitha Speaking of 'purty' - how are your curtains coming along?

7:54 AM
It's generally good news for Indian consumers that Amazon India exists, though because of Indian laws they aren't (yet) allowed to do business themselves. They can just coordinate with third party sellers.

@ElendilTheTall even holidays that aren't just stupid are mostly a pain in my ass.

@Jolenealaska because....?

Even back when I worked 40 hours per week for somebody else I never got the holidays off. To me they were just time and a half.

@Stephie Just called my tailor (again) but he didn't pick up. I got him last week. He said, super sorry, he had gone to Bangalore. Current status: bought the white cloth for the backend curtains. He has them now. When I have both the white and the blue in place, I'll post a pic.

I have a soft spot for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

7:57 AM
@FaheemMitha Bangalore? Trying to get a better paying gig at one of the SW companies? ;-)

Unfortunately, nothing I can do will make my room look like Xanadu. But at least I can try to make my guests not scream in horror.
@Stephie No, my tailor went to Bangalore. He said, on business No idea why. Unlikely to be trying to get a software job, I think.
Well, he's not my tailor, but you know what I mean.

Of course I do - just kidding!

@ElendilTheTall tell us all about your watches. And do you wear them all at once? On your ankles, strapped around your head, strapped around your neck?
Heard back from an old friend by email, who spent some time telling me how much he treasured our friendship, but that he didn't want to talk on Skype because he was too busy. People are weird.

@FaheemMitha no, i wear one at a time on my left wrist
I have never been a fan of Rolex... I don't even like the look of them

I got disgusted with my email inbox and I just deleted every damn thing. So now I'm going through everything every day trying to decide exactly what to do with it (block, keep the last one, keep for 10 days etc.). I didn't recognize this sender so open the email:
"David Sands will make a short presentation about achieving wellness based on Being. He will then lead a Group Clearing to clear disinformation in our energy field and set us on a path to health, joy and fulfillment."

8:12 AM
@ElendilTheTall I see. What's your favorite brand?

that I own or that I'd like to own :)

@ElendilTheTall Either. And that was a question, I assume.
Nothing too insane. Something a non-freak might actually own.
An example of a freak might be Donald Trump.

My favourite owned is my Christopher Ward
(mine has a plain leather strap, I hate crocodile)
the company was started by two guys who used to work for Swiss watch companies and were disgusted by the mark up

@ElendilTheTall Does it keep good time?
@ElendilTheTall Still quite expensive.

so they started their own company to provide the same quality at more reasonable prices

8:16 AM
The only thing I have ever worn that was that expensive was my wedding dress.

yes, but it is an excellent, excellent watch
(I didn't buy it, my family clubbed together for my 30th birthday)

@ElendilTheTall Oh. That's nice.

I figured;)

I only wear it on special occasions

@ElendilTheTall Why?

8:18 AM
@FaheemMitha because it's too expensive to wear every day and risk losing or scratching it

@ElendilTheTall Scratching is an issue, certainly.

besides, I have nearly 30 watches, I like to rotate them
this is my cheapest one
a design classic

@ElendilTheTall Wow! That's a real beauty! Classic understatement yet modern, not too flashy or glitzy or screaming "Look at me I'm (pretending to be) rich!"

I wonder how hard it is to manufacture a watch.

then I have mostly intermediates. a G-shock, a few Seikos (my Seiko 5 is probably my favourite day to day watch), a Pulsar

8:20 AM
@ElendilTheTall Why am I hearing the tetris theme song....?

@Stephie Yes. I dislike ostentatious looking watches
@Jolenealaska so when are you going to his seminar? your energy field must be positively packed with disinformation
@FaheemMitha as for watches I'd like, I'd like an Omega (Seiko's luxury arm) and a Breitling

@ElendilTheTall Example of "ostentatious looking", please.
@ElendilTheTall Ok

the Seiko you posted :)
I rather like this one

@ElendilTheTall Which one? The one I own?

8:24 AM
@ElendilTheTall I'd hardly call it ostentatious. But ymmv.

@ElendilTheTall it must

I thought it looked stylish when I saw it online. And I've been very pleased with it in general.

@ElendilTheTall Agreed.

also nice, an excellent German watch @Stephie

8:26 AM
I actually had someone recently compliment my watch in a Bombay railway compartment. This was noteworthy, because people practically never talk to you there. He said he collected watches and liked mine.

IWC also make some lovely watches iwc.com/en/collection/pilots/IW388007

Well, recently == some months ago, probably.
I mean, I sometimes talk to people there, but it's practically unheard of for someone else to start a conversation with me.

perhaps your reputation precedes you

@ElendilTheTall What reputation?

@ElendilTheTall My first "real" watch was a Junghans...

8:28 AM
@ElendilTheTall I think we have rather different tastes in watches.

@FaheemMitha just teasing ;)
This will hopefully be my next watch: instrmnt.co.uk/01-c
(scroll down for pictures)
very minimalist

A bell just went off in my headphones. I've no idea why.

@FaheemMitha I think so.
@FaheemMitha it's your brain's fire alarm

@ElendilTheTall Some sort of alert, probably. No idea where it could be coming from. Possibly Skype. Though if so, they must have changed their sound.

@Stephie oh, very nice, they have some beautiful watches
alas, my desire for more watches is not matched by my income
ho hum

8:31 AM
@ElendilTheTall All these cuckoo clocks must have been good for something - and Switzerland not being too far away...

Do these things have any resale value, I wonder.

@FaheemMitha watches?

@ElendilTheTall As your desire for new camera lenses or bodies?

good ones do
@Stephie exactly

@ElendilTheTall Yes, watches.

8:32 AM
@FaheemMitha good ones do
@Stephie though I am happy with my current setup
I have no desire for new camera kit at the moment
if someone threw a full frame body at me I would happily catch it, but for now I have a decent body and a fantastic lens, so it's all good

The most important thing about a watch is that is keep good time.
Otherwise it is a useless piece of ornamentation.

@FaheemMitha says the man with a watch with an enormous unnecessary piece of metal to one side :P

I have never owned a watch that didn't keep good time.
Although, I've never bought a "good" one either. I lose them, so I have never bothered.

tut
naughty jojo
either it's on your wrist or in a drawer/on a table or whatever
how does one lose it?

8:49 AM
<shrug> I just do. I lose everything remotely like jewelry, and a lot of things remotely like clothes. Since I don't generally walk home naked, no matter where I've been, I've never really understood it either.

too much going on in the ol' noodle
you lack focus, grasshopper

Speaking of noodle, I'm going to make something right now that might give you a whole new perspective on making homemade pasta. I'm hungry

uh huh
go on

@ElendilTheTall "enormous unnecessary piece of metal"? Don't follow.

on the left
what purpose does it serve?
other than to add weight and look flashy

8:56 AM
My mother and her weirdness has been at the front of my mind lately, so I made a dish that I learned from her. I've made it a million times before, so I did something a bit different and marinated the chicken thighs in soy sauce and then browned them. The flavor was great, but it wasn't a pretty thing. Plus, my oven here stays really hot after it's turned off, something I'm not used to. So, the flavor is good, but it got overly browned. I'm not particularly into the leftovers.

@Jolenealaska chicken thighs rarely make a for a good looking dish

So I'm going to make ravioli out of it. Starting now.

@Jolenealaska What's that in the back corner? (Pretty plate, btw.)

that looks like a faggot
Faggots are a traditional dish in the UK, especially South and Mid Wales and the Midlands of England. It is made from meat off-cuts and offal, especially pork. A faggot is traditionally made from pig's heart, liver and fatty belly meat or bacon minced together, with herbs added for flavouring and sometimes bread crumbs. Faggots originated as a traditional cheap food of ordinary country people in Western England, particularly west Wiltshire. Their popularity spread from there, especially to South Wales in the mid-nineteenth century, when many agricultural workers left the land to work in the rapidly...

@ElendilTheTall You've lost me there. You mean the strap curving to the left?

9:06 AM
@Jolenealaska is that ... soy-sauce flavoured chicken with gravy and mashed potatoes?
@FaheemMitha yes

@ElendilTheTall That's just a small design thing. IMO.
But, like I said, YMMV.

what is YMMV?
your mileage may vary?

@ElendilTheTall Your Mileage May Vary.

hmmm
yes, well, as you can see I prefer cleaner, simpler designs. extraneous doodads and gewgaws (@Stephie words of the day there) are not my thang

Truthfully, I don't give that much thought or attention to things. Though, as a child, I did. I remember I had a strange obsession with pens.

9:10 AM
@Stephie and I have one of those still

So, I guess there should be a "not any longer" appended to that first sentence.

@Jolenealaska speaking of thanksgiving

@ElendilTheTall Multiples, in fact.

@Stephie I was referring to the obsession
not the pens
:)

@ElendilTheTall Alien Roast?

9:12 AM
@Stephie a ham!
spiral cut

@ElendilTheTall Cut first, then roasted?

roasted then cut
otherwise it would dry out

Ham is rarely served here.

really? Brunswick ham? Speck?

@ElendilTheTall Thought so, but who am I to judge the quirks of British food?

9:13 AM
@Stephie it's more American actually

Quirks is a polite way of putting it.

@ElendilTheTall Same principles apply...

isn't a common German breakfast bread rolls with cheese and ham?

@FaheemMitha Says the Indian to the European....

@Stephie I miss your point...

9:14 AM
@ElendilTheTall Yes, but always cold.

well, a big ham like that is often served cold as well
usually for a buffet
it's basically roast bacon
Ham with mashed potatoes, peas and parsley sauce. Man, I haven't had that in yonks

@FaheemMitha Keyword would be "quirks" and what one percieves as such. Every cuisine has it and I'd say that Europe and the USA are "closer" than Europe and India. Common history and such.

though Britain and India are perhaps as close Europe-India gets, for obvious reasons

@Stephie I was just reflexively disparaging British cuisine.

Mulligatawny Soup. Coronation Chicken. Worcestershire Sauce. Kedgeree. All that jazz.

9:17 AM
British and Indian cuisine don't have much in common, imo.

I am fairly convinced that many foreigner's poor experience of British food comes down in large part to their making absolutely terrible choices about where to eat.

@ElendilTheTall Kedgeree is an Anglo-Indian survival. Does anyone eat that any more?
@ElendilTheTall Possibly true, if "absolutely terrible choices" includes Cambridge college cafeterias.

if you go into some crappy greasy spoon cafe, naturally you will have a crappy meal. if you spend fifteen seconds on Google finding a good place, you will have a great meal made with some of the best local produce in the world
@FaheemMitha yes, it does
@FaheemMitha it's not unheard of for sure

@ElendilTheTall Oh.

@ElendilTheTall That is apricot chicken, mashed potatoes and corn.

9:20 AM
@Jolenealaska ah

Now it is ravioli, but I forgot to let my water boil first.

So I have to wait a couple of minutes.

@FaheemMitha I have made it sans fish (EL, 1, section 1a)

@ElendilTheTall EL?

9:23 AM
@FaheemMitha Elendil's Law

@ElendilTheTall Interesting: Celebrity Chef alert.
You made kedgeree sans fish?

@FaheemMitha @ElendilTheTall makes Fish and Chips sans fish. :-P

@Stephie I think he needs his own show...

@FaheemMitha jeez, @Stephie has only been here a few weeks and even she knows!

@ElendilTheTall Basics....

9:32 AM
@Stephie damn straight

Guys, a completely different question:

why sully good chips with a piece of some worm-ridden bottom feeder?

Do you know a simple time management / priority system that is suitable for a 9-yo that is easily distracted?

Pomodoro?

While I have my schedule down pat, I don't want to overwhealm him. Yet he needs to "see" that he might shift soem homework to another day, but only if he has nothing else n the agenda. And that the stuf for tomorrow has to be done while things for next weeks should be done.

9:35 AM
choose a task, do it for 25 minutes without any distractions (set a timer). When the timer goes off, take a 5 minute break. Every 4 pomodoros, take a 20-30 minute break
@Stephie maybe also look at Bullet Journaling?
get a him a nice Leuchtterm1917 notebook and a pen

@ElendilTheTall Yikes! A pen! Writing! (he hates writing)

ah
well, something more modern then
Trello?
basically an online kanban system
to do, doing, done
free, works across all devices

Seriously, I started with putting all tasks on small note cards - subject on top, task below. Add deadline. Sort. Pick one from the most urgent pile.
Can I make it easier than this?

Hmm, I don't think so
is his problem prioritising tasks or actually doing them?

Well. the ravioli is drained and back in the skillet with the sauce, I can plate in maybe five minutes.
one last picture and I'll upload those.

9:39 AM
Was considering post-it notes and a week calender on the wall -> you can physically shift tasks and even block times. Mhm.
Problem is two-fold: Doing is boring (which means he tends to ignore them as long as possible) and once he has a back log, it's so "much" that he feels drowning in a sea of tasks.
Also, in the new school, he has way more subjects and homework assignments are sometimes due in two week instead of tomorrow.
While intellectually he's way beyond his nine years, emotionally he is rather younger... Sometimes both kids seem the same age, apart from a 30 cm height difference.

Does he have any incentive for working? Pocket money?
Computer/console time?

@ElendilTheTall we do the electronics time route, monetary incentive is difficult because we try to be fair towards the sister. And as the two are the sole grandchildren on both sides of the family...
Main problem: He thinks too much about the exercises. Other kids just do them, he's thinking it over and over and over and.... And suddenly he's been at the table for half an hour without putting anything on paper.

@Stephie what does your son enjoy doing?

@FaheemMitha Reading, TV, sports, being outside with friends, ... (not necessarily in this order). What most kids love.

@Stephie I see. Nothing specially out of the ordinary, then.

9:55 AM
@FaheemMitha Not really, no.

I suggest the lash
never did me any harm, other than the bruising, lacerations and lasting psychological damage.

@Stephie Do either of your children use a computer for school work? Laptop/desktop?

@FaheemMitha Not yet. And I'm glad they don't have to. Hey, daughter is six, she is supposed to practise her writing skills.

@Stephie That's true. One should be able to write.
Well, no reason one can't do both. I don't write much. Mostly handwritten notes.

10:00 AM
@Jolenealaska Aaaah! Beautifully wrapped leftovers!

They look hearty

About one hour from concept to plate.

and blurry

@Jolenealaska your next project - a cook book?

10:04 AM
but mostly hearty

yes :(

@Stephie Corn with Everything: An Iowan in Alaska

They were simmering, so they wouldn't sit still.

good grief, how hard was the simmer?
that is focus blur, not motion blur
the camera missed focus

barely moving.
I changed nothing from the simmer to the plate (as far as camera settings)

10:06 AM
fogged lens?

possibly

were you zoomed in or close?

About 2 feet away.
Same distance as I was to the final plate.

i see. my verdict is it simply missed focus
it happens
that's why you have a screen on the back :)

I don't know what that means
"screen on the back"?

10:12 AM
your camera has a screen on the back which you can use to verify the shot is in focus/properly exposed/generally good to go
or did you use your phone?

I used my camera. I could see it was blurry, but I couldn't make it better fast enough to make it worth it so I snapped it anyway.

fairy muff

the water in the second to last picture is bubbling at about the same rate as the sauce in the last picture. I didn't think about it at the time, but I apparently zoomed in more for the picture in sauce.

Ha! Found my keyword for the next homework time: Parkinson's Law.

10:30 AM
@Stephie work expands to fill the time available in which to do it?

@ElendilTheTall Yup.

I find the corollary to that law just as true as the law itself
you can get just about anything done by any deadline (in the time allotted)

So if you are nine years old and don't set yourself a deadline, you might be spending an entire afternoon at your desk, doing homework.

exactly!

god, I'm so glad to be done with formal education
I loathed every second

10:35 AM
@ElendilTheTall Not everything was bad. That might be one advantage of the German system of three secondary schools - you get a better chance of doing something that really interests you or enough time to practise where you need it.

three secondary schools?

For the most part I didn't do anything I didn't want to do in school. I really didn't care about grades, I was still in the top quarter or so, so I didn't do anything I considered to be busywork.

@ElendilTheTall We split after Grade 4, kids attend one of Hauptschule (5 years) / Realschule (6 years) / Gymnasium (8 years). Only the latter qualifies for university.

Since I didn't do anything I hated, I pretty much enjoyed what I did to.
@Stephie so they have to pick by grade 4 what path to take?

that does seem odd

10:41 AM
@Jolenealaska roughly. There are some differences depending on state and you may switch schools or continue after finishing one of the shorter ones, but yes, basically depending on your acchievements in primary / elementary school you get sorted.

heaven help you if you're a late developer

@ElendilTheTall Can be a problem, yes. Probably one of the reasons girls seem to be better at schol than boys. As I said, you can switch, but you might have to close some gaps if you go "up", e.g. in foreign languages and math.
The responsibility for the German education system lies primarily with the states (Länder) while the federal government plays a minor role. Optional Kindergarten (nursery school) education is provided for all children between two and six years of age, after which school attendance is compulsory. The system varies throughout Germany because each state (Land) decides its own educational policies. Most children, however, first attend Grundschule from the age of six to ten. German secondary education includes five types of school. The Gymnasium is designed to prepare pupils' education and finishes...

well, anyway, such things are behind me
Never will I have to do a single piece of homework ever again
I just get to assist the young 'uns with their's (-‸ლ)

11:13 AM
where did everybody go?
I'm fwightened

I'm still here!

I'm even more fwightened now
:P

you should be!

why...?

Oh I'm just blowing smoke.

11:16 AM
phew
damn it, I have a splinter in my finger that's too tiny to see

do you have any quick drying glue?

nope
what would I do if I did?
cut a huge slash in my finger then glue the wound shut?

Put a little drop on the splinter. Let it dry, then peel off the glue. Usually it will work the first time, sometimes it takes two or three times.

> damn it, I have a splinter in my finger that's too tiny to see

the more you mess with it before you do the glue, the harder it will be to make the glue work.
You don't have to see it!
the glue can cover as much as a half inch diameter.
dab it on, let it dry, pull it off.

11:22 AM
hmmm
what kind of glue are we talking? not superglue one assumes

Superglue actually is fine.
There is no difference between surgical glue and superglue. It's perfectly safe.
The only thing about superglue is that you want to start peeling it at the edge immediately.
If you wait even a second, you can't get under it to get it to peel.
Another thing you can do with superglue is to immediately touch some kind of fabric to give you a bit of a handle. Of course, you want to use something you don't mind throwing away.

hmm
I think I will stick with something less prone to stick myself/objects together
or the tried and true jabbing a needle into my finger until it stops hurting

11:37 AM
@ElendilTheTall Wow - attempt at accupuncture or trying to blindly excavate the offending splinter?

@Stephie the latter
acupuncture is for ninnyhammers

@ElendilTheTall what did you do in the first place? Scratched your head or petted a cactus?

@Stephie not a clue
i just noticed the pain
it could be one of my whiskers
it could be a sliver of the True Cross
Ich habe keine Ahnung

@ElendilTheTall That's why you aren't supposed to touch these mysterious objects that suddenly appear in a halo in your back yard...

@Stephie it was in my way, I was trying to get it on the bonfire

11:45 AM
(I'm really sorry, simply couldn't resist...! I don't enjoy others' pain.)

I quite understand - you're evil

@ElendilTheTall I learned from the best ;-)

@Stephie I hope you're not implicating me with that statement!
the very thought ಠ_ರೃ

11:59 AM
Good night guys

g'night hon

Sleep tight, @Jolenealaska!

12:17 PM
@Stephie you have usually gone off to run some errands by now, quiet day?

@ElendilTheTall No, not really, today is desk day (and laundry because it's sunny and breezy). Hubby will be home early so that we can continue with our wallpaper. Quiet? Perhaps, at least in the sense of "few interruptions".
You?

standard issue work day

12:41 PM
@stephie what is your new wallpaper like?

12:52 PM
@ElendilTheTall The most boring wall paper there is: Ingrain. To be painted afterwards. And the saddest part is that I already know that we'll be ripping it off again in probably one or two years.
We intend to use a cellulose-based plaster, but will be changing windows next year. So no sense putting it up now and then patching it up. Too expensive for that.

you sound like you've done your research

My father in law has been in the building business for decades. They renovated an old house (almost 100 years) and used the stuff there. Almost prohibitively expensive, but hubby will be doing the work himself. Good for the micro-climate, easy to maintain and wonderful to the touch.
