9:00 PM
@ewwhite What do you have against grey chest hair?

@Wesley It's my clients who care.

@ewwhite You want some bitchin' chest hair, talk to @freiheit
2

@ewwhite What about leg hair?

@ewwhite Well start working with more bears then.

And exactly why are your clients seeing you topless?

9:01 PM
@Wesley Wat? I have like a dozen of them

@freiheit Betcha I gotcha beat there, buddy.

@ewwhite Are you Dewwce Bigelow?

@Wesley Skintight spandex really makes the leg hair stand out, though.

@freiheit When I put shorts on:

This makes me sad...

9:13 PM
@ewwhite I don't know either city well enough to understand.

@ewwhite You live in the chicaco-bronx then? :D

@ShaneMadden South Side of Chicago (Chiraq), doesn't have a New York analogue... it's just the South Side of Chicago.

The South Side of Chicago is world famous and does not need to be compared to anything else.

@MichaelHampton 45 shootings last weekend
Five youngsters under the age of 15—four girls and a boy—were shot in a playground where they had gone after Easter services at a nearby church.

Witnesses agree that a car pulled up and one of the occupants asked the youngsters if they were in a gang. There is some dispute about whether the youngsters even got a chance to say no before the people in the car started shooting.

9:17 PM
@ewwhite What the FUCK?

@MichaelHampton Yeah, that's about right. I don't know anything about Chicago geography, other than that I'm pretty sure there's a big lake nearby, but I know that South Side of Chicago is not the neighborhood I want to visit.

Obviously this means we need to arm all 15 year olds!

@MichaelHampton gang membership on the South Side is implicit... based on where you live.

@freiheit I have traveled through the south side. Once. On a bus. As a white man. I survived...

you don't even join gangs anymore

9:18 PM
@KevinSoviero Isn't this already the case anyways in the US of A?

Is Lagunitas' Chicago brewhouse in the south side? I don't know. I might be willing to visit that.

@ewwhite Oh, so it's kind of how like governments work.
Only these governments are having a war.

@freiheit you'll be find over there. Hipsters are moving in

@MichelZ I was being sarcastic about the state of guns in America. Whenever there is a shooting, the right wings says we need MORE guns to make us safe... sigh

@KevinSoviero If you come to a gunfight and you don't have a gun, you're doing it wrong. But what's going on on the south side of Chicago is a whole new level.

9:20 PM
@ewwhite As long as i don't accidentally dress like a gang member?

@MichaelHampton But is the whole world just one big gun fight then?

@MichaelHampton it has an interesting social media component.
There was also 17-year-old Gakirah Barnes. Her Twitter moniker was @tyquannassassin, apparently in honor of a 13-year-old relative named Tyquann Tyler who was killed by a stray bullet in 2012. Barnes reportedly was allied with the rapper Lil Jay and the late rapper Lil JoJo, who was killed in 2012 by a not at all stray round after releasing a video dissing Chief Keef, the rapper. Keef’s 30-year-old cousin Mario “BigGlo” Hess was shot to death on April 9. Barnes tweeted a reference to a Notorious B.I.G. lyric the next day.

@KevinSoviero No, but when someone starts shooting at me, you can be sure I'm going to shoot back.

@MichaelHampton Heck, if someone starts stabbing at me I'm shooting back.

@MichaelHampton So you always carry a gun around? how sick is that!

9:22 PM
@MichelZ How sick is what?

@MichaelHampton Always carrying a gun with you

@MichelZ It's the American way!
(no, not really)

We're a concealed-carry state

@MichelZ It's maybe slightly inconvenient to have an extra two kilos of weight on your belt, but it has never made me sick.
@ewwhite You are now. And from what I hear people on the south side are lining up to get the permits around the block...

@freiheit No, no, it is.

9:24 PM
@MichaelHampton It makes me sick tough...
I think it's time for me to go to bed now :) good night fellas

@MichelZ Timezone?

@KevinSoviero CET

@MichaelHampton should I get one? Two?

@MichelZ But you live in one of those countries with tightly regulated... ammunition? The US has very strong pro-gun politics going on.

@ewwhite One for you, one for your wife?

9:25 PM

Q: How to carry a concealed firearm on a bike?

Brian KnoblauchFor those of you that happen to cycle through rough neighborhoods and are able to do concealed carry of firearms... Wondering what you wear to conceal them that works well while cycling. Obviously the standard cycling outfit isn't going to do any good whatsoever... Various back/fanny packs see...

@MichaelHampton Don't forget the dog.

@freiheit Well. Every male is in the army in switzerland, and every male gets a gun from them...

@freiheit Ankle holster!

Isn't that a rifle though?

@Wesley My poor dog...

9:26 PM
@MichelZ Yeah but your ammo gets stamped, counted, and checked. =/

@MichaelHampton yes
@Wesley yes

Okay, that was a belly rub.

@MichelZ I remember reading that while every male in switzerland has a rifle, the ammunition is fairly heavily regulated...

@ewwhite Oh, right, Chicago cops profile.

9:27 PM
@freiheit yes, but getting ammo is not really a problem

@ewwhite But if you're going to get a handgun, or even a permit, do yourself a favor and get the best training you can.

@MichelZ Getting ammo isn't the fun part. It's discharging it that's the fun part. =P
@MichaelHampton This a million times over.

I just want crazy people not to have guns... That and fully automatic guns need to go.

@MichaelHampton I've only been to a few gun ranges

@Wesley I'd want to put the extra pounds someplace I'm not spending energy moving around...

9:28 PM
@KevinSoviero Fully auto is AKA awesome mode!

but this city is messed up

@ewwhite Really? The gun ranges I've been to don't seem to have much need for servers... :)

=D
@freiheit Wimp.
@freiheit It's like ankle weights only with more FREEDOM

@Wesley I like that!

@Wesley Meh.. The three round burst is useful, but full auto is usually just a waste of ammo.

9:32 PM
@MichaelHampton Seems like full auto really needs a bipod, belt feed and somebody dedicated to just making sure the ammo is flowing... Especially the bipod.

@KevinSoviero I think very little should be outlawed, merely loosely regulated with heavy national and cultural emphasis on personal responsibility and intelligence, so yeah, I'm not 100% in favor of automatic bans or even large caliber bans. But we live in quite a messed up state of affairs with the last couple generations of government that the idea will likely not be realized, so instead we have a hobbled, bastardized inefficient and torn-apart bastardization of the ideals.

@freiheit Exactly. If it isn't sitting on the ground, then it's just going to throw bullets in the air.

I'm also heavily in favor of legalizing most if not all drugs and driving them out of the black market... for a whole host of reasons.
So I might be insane. Or at least appear to be by many peoples' standards. =P

Guns and weed, man, guns and weed.

A balloon of heroin and a .50 cal? Sure why not!
(Kidding) ((sort of)) (((Such caveats. Wow.)))

aboyementhe question is what should I study in order to be a hacker I have some knowledge on html but I don't know what should I study. oh another thing how to create a website using html. please answer

tempted to comment: "how about English?"

@Wesley I used to be a hard libertarian. But I'm begining to realize that the public can't be trusted to have a will of their own... (Wow, I just channeled pure 1984... Cool!)

@KevinSoviero Of course they can't. They have been trained to be helpless.

@MichaelHampton By whom?

@KevinSoviero What do you think public school is for?

9:41 PM
@MichaelHampton Are you serious?

@KevinSoviero It does pose a problem when incompetence, victim mentality, and blame shifting seems to be such an institutionalized and culturally ingrained set of skills. =/ I see it in myself a lot, especially when compared to other cultures and countries.

@KevinSoviero Of course I'm serious. Have you seen a public school lately?

@MichaelHampton Dewey weren't no fool. He knew what he was doing. Sadly.

@MichaelHampton Ya, I went to one just a few years ago... Between my literature and history classes, that's what made me into a libertarian.

9:44 PM
Don't read that book...you will have flashbacks to high school. Bad ones.

Some of the most left-wing, anti-establishment people, I met at high school.

Speaking of guns, @Holocryptic been to the range lately?

10:01 PM

@Wesley my recruiter friend there quit. 'nuf said.

@ewwhite D=

@Wesley plus you know I can't work anywhere.

@ewwhite Can't cramp your style!

I just suck at employeeing.

10:04 PM
@KevinSoviero And? Doesn't mean that high school isn't designed to beat that out of people. (Which isn't to say that I agree with conflating left-wing and anti-establishment, which are often very different.)

@ewwhite Apparently so do I, but I also suck at freelancing.

@Wesley The worst part is that freebasing skills don't translate at all into freelancing skills, even though you'd think there'd be some over lap from the words being similar. :(

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork Freelancing leads to freebasing.

Oh, well, now it makes more sense.

So a friend of mine got a "big" job through Freelancer. As part of the orientation for the project, she had a Skype meeting with the project owner. Dude whipped his dick out on camera.
That was not part of the project.
She reported him, but Freelancer is taking her to the cleaners. Their escrow and guaranteed work thing is getting worked by the predators that know how the game goes.

10:10 PM
How tha fuck?

kce
Why is Java installed on our RODC? Why?

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork Apparently once you accept a project past a certain point in the meet-and-great stage, you're committed to finish it and reach the milestones. Apparently when you do that, the fees that Freelancer is due get taken from your bank account. So this was a $5,000 project, the fees were taken, but she doesn't get paid until milestones are met. So the dick got whipped out after the last stage of irreversible acceptance, and it's just he-said-she-said about the dick thing
Dick whipper knew how to play the game.

@Wesley Oh, nice. (freelancer.com, right?) Well, forget that shit, then.

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork Yeah, that's the place.

10:13 PM
Bummer. With prepping for the job search I've been hitting those kind of sites a lot lately. Guess I should have figured there'd already people who know how to game the system and fuck you over.

Erm, record the skype session?

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork eLance seems to be the most legit of the online freelancing sites
@MatthewIfe Now she could, yeah.

@Wesley So, why has it been over a month since you put your ass on a bike, anyways?

@Wesley Good to know, though I've noticed a lot of low-hanging fruit on freelancer.com - pick up 50, 100 bucks for a "project" that I can complete in 5 minutes with a script I wrote a while back, or a script I could punch up in half an hour or whatever.

@freiheit About a month ago things got a bit busy with an ailing cat, ailing mom, and picking up some billable time with an old client. It was harder to get on a bike before it got too hot. So instead, I wanted to keep some rhythm of cardio going, and started running on a treadmill. Way easier to say "I've got a few minutes, I can pound out a mile or two."
Things are settled down a bit more now, back to normal. I should get back on it, but now I'm addicted to the running, and the laziness of not having to go outside if I don't have to.
=P
Waiting for my CPA bill to come so I know how much I have left over to get my headset / handlebars done at REI

10:26 PM

@ewwhite Hang-gliding without a harness?!

@Wesley that's like raw-doggin' it unsafe.

10:40 PM
@Wesley If you sell your car so that a bike is the only way you have to get around, that'd get you back on the bike!

10:51 PM
@freiheit is this silly?
sed -ir '/HISTFILE|HISTSIZE/d' /home/silly-developer/.bash_profile where .bash_profile == pastebin.com/bRVVVQiN

Well it will just make it use the defaults instead.

@ewwhite Aren't you really just after the "> $HISTFILE"?

I was... '/> \$HISTFILE/d'
but... the other HIST stuff isn't needed either
HISTFILE=~/.bash_history; export HISTFILE
HISTSIZE=200; export HISTSIZE

@ewwhite KILL IT! KILL IT ALL!

so they were setting a 200-line history, then wiping it?
sorry, this is the one I want to kill - pastebin.com/Fsn1cL3h

10:59 PM
@ewwhite There'd still be history while using bash, you just lose the prior history at the moment of login...

If your after keeping track of that they did, bash history isn't really a good way to do it anyway since its under the control fo the user.

Hole-Lee Dookie Butter the front page is awful today.

You could chattr their file and make it append only ;)

@MatthewIfe It's actually for a very loose accounting of what the programmers do
I added bash history timestamps, and have always been annoyed at these profile scripts
ignoredouble is on, so it's not meant to be a true accounting of everything that happens

Q: How do I log every command executed by a user?

SupratikI want to monitor all user's activity in my server. Even when the user executes a shell command from some editor like vim I want to see them in the log file. I have checked the tool acct but it is not listing the complete commands. (Please correct me if I have missed some options which does alr...

Thats true accounting of everything that happens.

11:07 PM
yeah, I have more comprehensive audit.rules for my healthcare systems... and real session logging as well
this is loose. Produce is lower stakes.

Seems easy enough to implement doing that though, despite the criticality of the system.

don't want to ausearch :)
(it's not for me... it's for power users of the system to see when developers of said system were in and what they were doing)

@ewwhite The Devs have root?
Not once. Not ever. No way.

@Magellan the devs have unrestricted sudo

do the chattr trick instead then. You'd need to use something like a cron job though to clear the files out manually.

11:12 PM
@ewwhite so, sudo su - ?

sudo -i
yeah

@ewwhite So they have root.

I like to put this one out there...
COPYSYS.DELETE LROUTINE
        CALL SCRNSAVE
        ROLLOUT ("rm -rfv /ppro/ppro" + SYSTEM)

        CALL GET.COP WITH SYSTEM
        IF (CHOP COPSMNT != "/ppro")
                ROLLOUT("rm -rfv " + COPSMNT + "/ppro" + SYSTEM)
        ENDIF

        CALL SCRNREST
        RETURN
        ENDROUTINE
can you guess what was deleted when the COPMNT variable wasn't asserted?

\system32 ?

11:14 PM
I found that in a program that these devs wrote...

Can you guess what happens when COPSMNT is set to "/ " ?

it deleted all of customer's data

@ewwhite Nice. Did the Dev get suspended for that or promoted?

nothing happened to said developer
I charged client for expensive data recovery
But had to go through a lot to associate the deleted files with their expected names...

this has happened FOUR times with this software company
so I'm interested in seeing their shell usage patterns and maybe suggesting some better linux training

These developers aren't idiots, they are the types who are knowledgable to be dangerous.

11:18 PM
@MatthewIfe actually, there's no Linux training. I used to give learning lunches when I worked there.
"here's how SSH keys work."
"here's how you do X in Linux"
"don't CHMOD 777 ALL THE THINGS"

Its not that they dont know how to do X, its that they dont know how to do X robustly and sanely!

@MatthewIfe because nobody ever needed to.
and I was there 6 years... I improved what was there.
I've been gone 6 years...
but I'm trying to get back in to help their practices

Are they good at what they do on other platforms?

@MatthewIfe The magic of their software is the business logic

@freiheit CPA bill came in the mail. Hold me.
opens envelope

11:23 PM
the implementation is poor... as you've seen in mview, dbc and the scripts I've shown you

Waiting for the thump when @Wesley passes out.

Oh that wasn't bad. I was expecting about twice that much.

@Wesley So only 2 more years until handlebars, then?

@Wesley how much?

Only $825. I was expecting $1500 or so because I used a few hours of my CPA's time to deal with some new stuff this year and he charges $205 an hour

11:26 PM
@Wesley oooh

@ewwhite 'twas a pleasant surprise.

@Wesley Does this mean I can stop holding you now?

@freiheit Yeah. =(

@Wesley Now can we go ride bikes?

@freiheit okai
Now I can spend $400 or $500 on the headset and handlebars and maybe a wheel or two.

11:36 PM
@Wesley I'm gonna go spend money on beer, that I will carry on my bicycle.

@freiheit Don't forget your revolver.

@Wesley I live in California, not Arizona

yawn morning all. who shall I maim and incinerate today?

It's all magazine-fed semi-auto, not revolvers. Sheesh!
@FalconMomot Oracle

@freiheit DEATH TO ORACLE STAFF!

11:41 PM
I'm working on setting up a new Oracle DB server
Why?
Because I enjoy pain and misery and suffering and doing all sorts of shit by hand

@freiheit yes, I was going to say, "good question".

@FalconMomot Ok, really, because our plan to slowly get rid of Oracle is taking forever and the H/W maintenance on a particularly important Oracle DB box expires in couple months.

HOW THE FUCK DO I ESCAPE A SEMICOLON?? FUCK YOU NAGIOS SO MUCH

@JoelESalas Have you tried quoting it and putting 6 backslashes in front of it?

@JoelESalas ^]]a;\;;$

11:43 PM
@freiheit :((((((((((((

I actually have puppet code that does that...
because...

Has no one ever successfully achieved that

you know...
reasons...
$safeline = regsubst($line, '([^A-Za-z0-9_\-.,:\/@])',"\\\\\\1",'G')

@FalconMomot This guy: serverfault.com/users/217709/icemanind Asked the same question about his personal hot spot twice in a row, after his first one got closed.

@Wesley Oh, hey, check out my new rack.

11:54 PM
@freiheit Checking...
Nice nametag
Safety orange, I like it.

@Wesley It's you he lives near. Go get him!

@FalconMomot I know, I was saddened to see that. I've probably bumped into him around town. =P
@freiheit Spiffy.

@Wesley bump into him with a sharp metal object.

@Wesley Totally set up to carry a 12-pack on the front now. ;)

@Wesley you can also walk into him wearing this perhaps

11:59 PM
@FalconMomot Casual Friday attire? =P

give him a hug! he clearly needs one since he is having so much trouble with his phone.

@DennisKaarsemaker Heck with you people not allowing remote workers!
