Q: What's wrong with "stupider"?

wmilOn online boards I've seen some people claim that "stupider" is ungrammatical. I can't see any reason why it would be, and it seems like it's commonly used. Google Ngram Viewer And it's also in online dictionaries... http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/stupider http://www.thefreedictionar...

He's just not getting it, that's what's wrong.

@Bob Oh that's awesome
He must think we can't d/v that into oblivion as well

Bob
@BigHomie Well, I'm actually not sure if that's as OffTopic on SU.

@Bob Oh for the love of God!

-1, I know who you are. — BigHomie 10 secs ago

Bob
4:08 PM
Before you start the downvote brigade, please consider if it's actually a valid question.
I'm too sleepy to think right now.

@Bob You're right, I've reversed mine for now

@Bob WAT
@Bob I don't think it actually is, but...

I use SU to ask the stupid questions I don't want to be judged for... Doesn't everyone?
2

Sounds like a pokemon.
Plic Pi?

4:10 PM
@KevinSoviero I use SuperUser to ask questions about stupid software: superuser.com/users/6580/wesley?tab=questions

Bob
@BigHomie Hey, sometimes borderline overly-broad questions work if someone can actually be bothered coming up with a long answer.
Heck, that might've become a canonical question at some point.

@voretaq7 don't you work in healthcare?

@DennisKaarsemaker Yes. I don't know why I bother securing our shit when everyone else is living in the 1970s "Nobody would ever mess with it" era of system design.
@KevinSoviero How is babby formed?
(the answer involves vacuum molding!)

@voretaq7 how woman get pragnant?

@tombull89 (Involves turkey basters)

4:14 PM
@tombull89 Ask whats-her-face -- the former half-term governor of Alaska's unwed teenage mother of a daughter...

Bob
@voretaq7 The what now?

what subject was she named after? Was she "Biology Palin"?

@voretaq7 As the Hank Green says, biology is about sex and not dying.

Bob
@voretaq7 Ah. My brain failed to translate "unwed teenage mother of a daughter" to "daughter who was an unwed teenage mother". Not that the latter is any easier to read :S

4:16 PM
(they're both titles of endearment. Or perhaps of loathing and disrespect...)
@Bob yeah I tried to make it as grammatically complicated and awkward as I could :)
I also refuse to refer to Sarah Palin without using her proper title - "the former half-term governor of Alaska"
because seriously, what the hell else is she gonna do with her life?

So HopelessNoobs SU Mod application has been well recieved...

Bob
@voretaq7 Infamy seems to be working out well.

This morning my alarm when off like it usually does, and I accidentally hit dismiss w/o realizing it and went back to bed thinking I hit snooze. The only reason I didn't sleep through the morning is because my mother screamed at me that I was still in bed at 7am... There are some pros to living with your parents... For one, your never late for work.

Bob
@KevinSoviero That's what five dozen alarms spaced two minutes apart are for ;)

@Bob how's that pay?

4:21 PM
I had a 6am alarm, and a 6:10am alarm (the latter set on an alarm clock on my bookshelf, so I have to get out of bed to turn it off)

Rebooted cable modem... Lost IP address.

Bob
@voretaq7 In RageCoin.

@Bob Okay, tell me if I left anything out, since you pulled my arm~

On phone with cumcast...

A: What is better? Changing Nameservers or A records?

BigHomieThe 'Nameserver' option you are referring to usually refers to either an authoritative (has all the answers or knows who does) DNS Server for that domain, or a Forwarding server. It is the IP address of the DNS Server. The DNS Server itself servers as the single* point of contact for resolving n...

......and it's lunch

4:22 PM
I need to just get blackout-drunk, hide my alarm, and then I'll be on a scavenger hunt in the morning trying to find where that noise is coming from.

@KevinSoviero I'll set my phone on alarm / vibrate and put it on the bathroom counter in the next room. The noise travels well, the vibration on the counter is awful and goes through the shared wall, and by the time I make it to the bathroom I usually figure "Eh, might as well shower while I'm here..."

Also happened with me, when my phone vibrated itself off the bed.
vvvt vvvt vtt thunk ohshi-

Bob
@BigHomie I thought the question was "should I use a NS and have GoDaddy serve as the authoritative servers, or use an A/CNAME directly".

@Bob That's how I took it. Which belied him not knowing aaaanything about DNS.

@Bob XY Problem, dude doesn't know jack about either
> And they are the best example for having domains and hosting on different providers.

WHY do they prefer ARecords + CName over Nameservers? And what should I prefer?

4:24 PM
@Bob New cryptocurrency. You calculate hashes of JPG files containing a selfie you took while raging.

Some people can't even spell DNS.

@Wesley Oh god, I can't shower in the morning, I'm all cold and tired and shit. I shower the night before...

@Wesley Exactly

@BigHomie Go eat.

Very well bb

4:25 PM
munches on toaster waffles

I look homeless if I don't shower in the morning.
I also look homeless about 4 hours after I get home from work, but I'm at home so people can see that clearly, I'm not homeless.

@Basil Really? If you change your clothes and do your hair, you should look the same...

@Basil Or you could shop at Sprouts and then people would think you were rich and eccentric.

going to lunch, bye

4:27 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker hurr

4:42 PM
@Basil SQUATTER

@BigHomie EAT.

If you haven't seen Rick and Morty drop everything you're doing and watch it NOW

@Wesley haha cafe next door, back already

evening boys + girls + things

@BigHomie Uni cafe? Decent food?
@MichelZ How's Zurich these days?

4:46 PM
@Wesley yeah, I went to the hospital cafe today though, typically better but its hard to screw up nachos

Anyone seen where an iPhone is setup with an Exchange account, but doesn't synchronize e-mail for a long time, and the calendar never synchronizes (yes it's enabled). Also tried restarting the phone. Space is low, ~600MB available.

@ChrisS I haven't, no.

@Wesley Lovely, thanks. Sun is shining, weather is good :) How's Scottsdale? (never heard of it by the way :) )

uuuh... nice!

4:49 PM
Change to Celsius just for you @MichelZ

thx :D
uuh, i'm getting drunk. time to put on my developer hat again!

@Wesley you suck

@ChrisS yep

Picture taken just outside of my home-office window.

@BigHomie Fix?

4:51 PM
As of 45 seconds ago.

@ChrisS Sorry, delete and recreate typically.

Totally not upboating that. =P

@Wesley lovely!
Is that why it's called TMPfs? – MichelZ just now edit
couldn't resist..

@MichelZ So mean. =P (But I was going to write something meaner)

@Wesley Never heard of it. <-Canadian

Sprouts is an American chain of specialty grocery stores with over 150 locations across the United States. Sprouts stores are smaller than a typical supermarket, focusing on fresh foods, produce, healthy foods and vitamins/supplements. Its corporate headquarters are in Phoenix. Sprouts is the second specialty market brand developed by the Henry Boney family and friends, who sold their Henry's Farmers Market in 1999. This includes Kevin Easler, Shon Boney, Scott Wing, Stan Boney, and maybe other executives. In February 2011, Apollo Global Management announced that it was acquiring Spr...

Is there some OS that uses /etc/stab?

Kinda trendy yuppy but still mainstream. I mock it, but I love it. I'm within walking distance of one and shop there frequently.
@Zoredache #StabOS
Dunno, never seen /etc/stab

@Zoredache not according to google

@Wesley Sounds like someplace I'd run into a lot of hipsters.

@Basil Oh absolutely you would. Probably me (twirls moustache)

4:59 PM
What is with hipsters in this room?

I share a few preferences with hipsters, but only old hipster stuff. You know, before it was cool.

@BigHomie Better than nothing...

@MichelZ Hipsters can be in the IT industry- they can be devops, cloud architects, and experts in obscure linux variants

@Basil Like NixOS...

@Wesley Right, but not ever HP-UX. That's not yet uncool enough.

5:01 PM
@Basil OK... and we hate that? why? :D

Hmm, I wonder why there aren't more Z/OS hipsters... that really was computing before it was cool...

@Basil CP/M or GTFO

@MichelZ I don't hate hipsters. All my friends are hipsters. I just mock them

@Basil Mainframes hate hipsters.

@Basil I'm a devops cloud architect using plan9!

5:02 PM
Okay diskpart, why are you taking all day to clean all a 16 GB thumbdrive

@voretaq7 Mainframe people certainly do, but so do people who wear suspenders unironically.

@DennisKaarsemaker You build systems from birth control?
Oh wait that's Plan B. Never mind.

@Wesley Just step on it with your f33t

@DennisKaarsemaker Are you now, or have you ever been, wearing raybans?

@Basil not the people. the machines.
(and mainframe people wear belts and suspenders unironically. They take redundancy seriously in the mainframe world son!"

5:03 PM
@MichelZ No, it's hammer time!

@voretaq7 Mainframes are post-hate. They can make you miserable without giving enough of a damn about you to hate you

@Basil my glasses are actually raybans, but not aviator sunglasses

@Basil Mainframes definitely have the ability to hate.
They also have the ability to "grudgingly tolerate"

@voretaq7 You're thinking of as/400

5:04 PM
(I'm pretty sure mainframes are incapable of love)

The mainframe just is. It doesn't need to hate you.

@Basil The AS/400 is capable of love.

@DennisKaarsemaker My glasses are Stetson frame... is that hipster?

There are some AS/400s that only behave for a specific operator. Anyone else tries to install PTFs or maintenance releases and they pitch a fit :)

I don't know if that's hipster.

5:04 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker what's that bottle behind you?

@Basil Brain Bleach.

@Basil a tea pot

You didn't get one when you came to the comms room?

@DennisKaarsemaker aaaah, get that away from my screen!!!!

@DennisKaarsemaker fluorescent orange teapot? You're totally a hipster now :P

5:05 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker HTTP/418?

@Basil that's green...

@DennisKaarsemaker Maybe it's the sepia filter throwing me off

@Basil what sepia filter?

@DennisKaarsemaker sips second Thermos if green tea for the day

@Wesley green tea with jamine here

5:07 PM
<- Pure whiskey

@Basil already?

@DennisKaarsemaker Yummm
@DennisKaarsemaker He works with HP-UX

@Basil that's probably what's throwing off your color perception :)

@Wesley AIX, actually. And it's Brocade that's driving me to drink
Heh, I wish I could be having whiskey... we can't actually drink any alcohol when we're on call or at work

@Basil It does not matter what's driving you to drink. The essence is that you drink.

5:09 PM
@Basil You gotta buy it a beer and let it borrow your Axe body spray. Cuz it's... brocade. See, with the... bro... it's okayimleaving

Whiskey. good call. getting some scotch right now

@Wesley you jumped the shark...

@DennisKaarsemaker At least it didn't eat me.

@Wesley Ow, my sense of humor

@MichelZ first learn to spell it properly...

5:10 PM
damn
Whisky
sry

no
single malt scotch whisky

no?
:)

no blends, not irish, and definitely not bourbon

true

ok, that's enough snobbery :)

5:11 PM
Hmm, didn't mean to onebox that- I linked about the spelling
I'd been using the american spelling this whole time and never noticed

never call a scotch whisky whiskey

How can I see how many stars I have left? Things are about to get interesting.

How can you prevent a link from oneboxing?

@BigHomie You can't AFAIK

Wait, there's a limit on stars??
3

5:13 PM
@Basil I tack a semicolon on the end;

@BigHomie cool ty

@Basil I can't be the only one who tops out
on a regular

let's find out...

@DennisKaarsemaker good enough?

5:15 PM
^ or that

@MichelZ dunno, haven't tasted it yet :)

brb, starring everything @BigHomie ever said

My penis is a spoon. #nostarsplz

^Star that

Hour #2 without internet.
I may have to spoof my comcast MAC address.

5:16 PM

@MikeyB @Jacob didn't tell you? One does not simply get on the star wall

@BigHomie ITYM: "One does not simply not get on the star wall."

drinking this now :)

wow!
Found the limit
2

@MikeyB ed was already whining about that earlier

5:17 PM
@ewwhite Internet Outage: Hour 2. Jailbroke iPhone to enable tethering and hit my AT&T data cap. Managed to view 3 lolcats and a youtube video - hopefully this will sustain me until my main connection is restored...

@MikeyB In your case maybe, in context someone was trying awfully hard

@Basil You could have just asked me and I'd have told you it's 30 stars per (UTC) day.

@Basil What's the limit

@DennisKaarsemaker nice. Need to get some more, fortunately I've got employees in england

@voretaq7 Darnett, I wanted him to guess

5:18 PM
@voretaq7 I wasn't counting, I wanted to see it :)

@voretaq7 z0r.de/4989
@MichelZ which country are you in? They sell Laphroaig outside .uk too :)

@DennisKaarsemaker unfortunately no scotish :(
@DennisKaarsemaker switzerland

@MichelZ I had swiss whisky once.

@Basil yeah, got some too. but nothing really compared to scotch

@voretaq7 I never saw the way the orange slayed the rake

@DennisKaarsemaker nice :D

@MichelZ It was almost, but not quite, the worst thing I've ever drank

Read-only fun time starting now-ish

5:20 PM
@NathanC I'm not sure any of us have...

@MichelZ the power of google!

@ShaneMadden THE SKY IS FALLING!!!1!!

@voretaq7 jailbreak iphone for tethering??? WTF?

@ShaneMadden and you get to participate in the fun!

On another note, read-only apparently forces a logout too...

5:21 PM
Damnit. Comcast is not giving me an IP address.

@Basil I can imagine :) There's almost none older than 8y from switzerland

I still find it moderately ridiculous that serverfault needs to go RO for maintenance :)

I sawyer they lock things down to MAC address.
Swear

@MichelZ Don't get me wrong, I drank the whole bottle eventually.

@MichelZ Droid does.

5:22 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker @ShaneMadden will change that in the near future. I'm sure. :D

@Basil hehe

@DennisKaarsemaker So much easier to make your standby DB read-only when you reboot the primary, no?

@MichelZ Well you can tether it without jailbreaking, but it checks with the carrier to verify that you've purchased a tethering plan.

@BigHomie droid does what?

5:23 PM
at which point I turn to AT&T and say "Ahahahahahahaha fuck no!"

@MikeyB it's just that my boss would literally kill me if I suggested that :)

@MichelZ Everything
Come on, you really didn't see that one coming >:)

@voretaq7 rofl @ americans ;)

My blackberry can make a little wifi hotspot without permission from my carrier, I think

@MichelZ STOP LAUGHING AT OUR THIRD-WORLD CELLULAR SERVICE AND AIRPORTS! :'(

5:24 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker We're not doing maintenance, we're jumping the sites over to the DR datacenter to make sure it won't crumple under the load. Leaving their DBs read-only for this one, we'll do the database failover too (and make them writable) in a couple more weeks.

@BigHomie I did, but I also feed the trolls...

@DennisKaarsemaker SU is read-only too

@MichelZ Good, I don't want Evan to starve :)

@MichelZ touche, but @EvanCarroll has left the building

@NathanC they're breaking shit testing in advance of some datacenter moves

5:25 PM
@voretaq7 unfortunately, i've banned him. and I have no clue how to unban. (and then... why would I) :)

SO is about to go, that's the big one :)

@MichelZ you can't ban, only suspend. When he comes back he'll be HUNGRY.

@voretaq7 let him starve to death.

@ShaneMadden Maybe a good question for SF. How can I failover my Datacenter and still keep the Database in read/write mode
:D

DAFUQ? Is this like the Community user, but for chat?

5:27 PM
@MichelZ Yeah, kinda stuck on the MSSQL train at this point ;)

@voretaq7 It's called "ignore this user everywhere" - I like that! Does that include real-life???

@voretaq7 Yeah, @ShaneMadden explained. :p

@MichelZ Sadly that button has as many bugs as the "Destroy User" button mods get.

@ShaneMadden MSSQL... hmm... AlwaysOn and stuff?

@MichelZ You mean SometimesOn?

5:28 PM
@HopelessN00b it's the feed-posting user. It changes names sometimes.

@MichelZ Yeah, so the DR replicas are getting read from right now. If we moved the writable instance, we'd be writable right now in the DR site

@NathanC NeverOn and AlwaysFail?

Ah, I see. Pirate-themed today. Could do worse.

@NathanC dunno... I'm implementing it in the coming weeks on SQL2014. is it that bad?

@ShaneMadden my understanding is moving the writable copy then invalidates the NYC database though (?)

5:29 PM
@MichelZ I'm still using 2008R2-era stuff, so wrong person to ask ;)

@NathanC that does not even have AlwaysOn, does it? :D

we have the same problem with Postgres - I can cut over read-only with no issues, but if I flip the master writer role I have to re-sync the environment

@MichelZ Nope...just the atrocity that is log shipping
or failover clustering if you're so inclined (which we're using)

@NathanC So why the hostility?

@MichelZ AlwaysOn was infamous for killing itself

5:30 PM
@voretaq7 Yeah, this problem sucks. Looking at solutions like the interposer in front of postgres that managed distributing queries/updates behind multiple backends... not sure how robust those are.
So much easier to be "OH I READ-ONLY FOR A WHILE!"

@NathanC ah... uuh... damn :D

I think SO fell over...not loading heh

yup
failing back now

"connection reset"

@ShaneMadden you've killed SO. You basterd!
2

5:33 PM
Okay, back to the wonderful world of XML parsing for me...

@NathanC Thank god all I ever need is contained within lxml.etree and xpath accessors.

ok boys... there's something to slaugther on the table... l8tr gator

@MikeyB Using XDocument here...C#

@NathanC "This... this... THIS IS AN EX-DOCUMENT!"

@MikeyB it's merely resting

5:39 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker RESTing?

@MikeyB bad pun, 20 minutes in the box of shame

@DennisKaarsemaker Your mom?

@MikeyB It's taking a REST and afterward it'll need a cleaning with SOAP

So how long is too long to wait after you sysprep a machine, reboot and it's at "Applying system settings"... 30 minutes? 1 hour? 2 hours?

@MikeyB they're pretty good, but then I have to maintain that in a redundant configuration in addition to my DB servers

5:41 PM
@voretaq7 I was pondering the same... do they exchange state? Can things get out of sync if the shared IP just flips over? Or does it just work?

@MikeyB more importantly, is it web scale?

@MikeyB would depend on the machine, but on good hardware, 15 minutes is when I would be concerned. My test VMs are usually done in 4-5 minutes...

@MikeyB they're basically just multiplexing proxies so there's no "state" to exchange -- It pretends to be a Postgres server, takes your request and if(write) { send to master } else {send to random machine }
It only gets really hairy when you have many slaves (because then you need a cascade and decision tree for who becomes master next) - but I don't like the idea of "another component" in the system personally

@ewwhite "Hour #2 without internet. Prostate is starting to enlarge, haven't fapped in 120 minutes. If I squint hard I can pretend that the clouds look like an orgy scene. Hmm, good enough."
@voretaq7 The ones I was looking at were "duplicate the writes on N postgres masters behind the proxy" which feels a little iffy. I like the sound of that behaviour better. Which one?
@Zoredache laptops :(
^ who says conversation multiplexing is hard? :D (left brain, right brain, bottom brain)

@MikeyB @ewwhite hosts the backups for brazzers on his local network

5:47 PM
@MikeyB I think you can configure pgpool either way (?)

I like the failover cluster method because it's easy to set up and use...but it leaves the standby slaves idle chewing resources

@MikeyB Says a man with experience in cloud orgies.

I see a lot that do "multiple masters" though because it eliminates the single point choke for writes

@voretaq7 this particular environment is kind of read-heavy:

@MikeyB yeah that's pretty typical :)

5:51 PM
@MikeyB Can you get a graph like that from MySQL? Or at least the data, so I can make the graph?

For something like that I'd do 1+1, 1+2, or maybe 1+1+2
@KevinSoviero yeah there are cacti plugins for MySQL stats - the data's available somehow
IDK the specific commands you'd invoke in the SQL console to get the numbers like I do for Postgres but I know you can get it :)
(Cascading replication FTW, by the way. Seriously, it's made of liquid awesome.)

Anyone here have experience with Galera?

@voretaq7 It's made of the bitter tears of lusers?

@voretaq7 So, a write request would be sent to a random slave, then that slave would send the write to another slave, so on so forth?

@NathanC Eventual consistency! It'll all work out somehow. #devoops

5:56 PM
@NathanC In Postgres writes always go to the master (slaves are read-only), but you can have a "slave of a slave"

@voretaq7 Isn't that circular replication?

so you can have 1 master that handles all your writes, that replicates to a slave, and the slave replicates out to a pool of read-only machines that handle all your reads.

@voretaq7 Ah...I guess I'm just not understanding read-only replicas. If you do a write, the write has to get to the slaves somehow so it has updated data, right?

@KevinSoviero no, it's a linear tree - a -> b -> (c,d,e,f...)

@voretaq7 Ah.

5:58 PM
@NathanC right, that's the replication end. the "read only" bit is for user queries. You can do basic SELECTs on slaves, but if you try to INSERT/UPDATE they throw an error.

Ah, ok

@KevinSoviero no but you can get the graph from Zabbix :D

@MikeyB Thanks for talking me down from flaming yesterday's vendor. I was about to call them up and start shouting. I was... irrationally angry in a way I wish I didn't get. "OpenDNS might suck, and I might suck harder for using them as my upstream resolver, BUT YOU PEOPLE DON'T KNOW YOUR LEFT HAND FROM YOUR RIGHT FOOT AND YOU SHOULD BE SHOT AND HANGED!!"
