Watch out! KILLER HP firmware update bricks ProLiant server mobos http://buff.ly/1nMfJ0g

@ewwhite the prices, man?

@DanilaLadner I'm dealing with Killer HP firmware

@ewwhite haha.
Killer whale.

1:16 PM
Hey yall ever have this problem?
Why is chrome removing the wildcards? I did use this code: Get-ChildItem -Path D:\EmptyThisFolder -Include . -File -Recurse | foreach { $_.Delete()} — BobJim 6 mins ago
Chrome removes the wildcards in comments when you type something like *.* only . shows up
duh

markdown italics, how awesome

morning

greetings

@ewwhite Flashback Friday?

> But by that time, the file formats of the saved images had become obsolete. A team of archivists and computer researchers used custom software to recover the images.
and @HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork thinks reinstalling Win '98 is a big deal, sounds like a #FirstWorldProblem to me

meh, screw you facebook

heh, "upgrade"

Why run bleeding edge firmware?

1:35 PM
@BigHomie it's not bleeding edge. It's released quarterly via DVD/.ISO from HP to paying customers.

@ewwhite Oh I see

@BigHomie because it's the first they demand you to do when you open a case?

@faker Opposite Dell, they only recommend you upgrade firmware when you're having a problem

I tell people to update their firmware on HP servers all the time.

@BigHomie ehh, not really. I had a unresponsive server yesterday and they didn't even look at it and told me to upgrade the firmware

1:38 PM
> If you are not experiencing problems on your computer and are not aware of any additional features in the BIOS that are needed, then you may not need to perform the update. You can preview the release notes for the specific update to determine whether it will benefit you.
Either typical first level support, or you may have really had a problem

@BigHomie don't think we had a problem with the firmware, Dell technician just e-mailed me that the server is back. He didn't update the firmware though :D

lol

we tend to revise our dell server and storage hardware at least once a year

We have to upgrade a lot of older desktops to take advantage of the CCTK

I'm wondering though what it was. It locked up completely both OS and iDRAC. The SSH on the iDRAC still responded but closed the connection when trying to login

rik.vanmechelenWe are going to install sdd's as main hdd in all of our pc's. However, some of them already have an ssd drive that is beeing used as a cache drive. Should be keep this chace ssd? @HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork When you click the timestamp on a comment then you get a fully qualified link that you can paste - incl. a link to the original comment

Glad I decided to drive to NJ for LOPSA east rather than the train

@ewwhite They're replacing their spinning rust with SSDs, but their servers with spinning rust have some sort of SSD cache drive setup already, and he wants to know if he should keep that SSD cache drive to cache data from.. well, now what are going to be a bunch of SSD drives. :/

2:00 PM
@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork nuh uh

@cole Did the train derail?

@MichaelHampton I'm using dhclient from ISC's DHCP 4.3.0 right now. It's a FreeBSD 9.2 box (soon to be 10.0).

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork aha.

Programming and caffeine...I've turned into devops
runs

2:03 PM
@MichaelHampton I guess it's not running anywhere near the hotel/shut down for that part of the trip

@NathanC Devops may be horrible in practice, but it's an attractive idea. Combining the laziness of a programmer with the laziness of a sysadmin... sounds like getting paid to sleep your way through life.

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork Heh. I'm rewriting a program a consultant wrote that imports data from our front-end sales portal to our ERP system
they wrote it in java...
And didn't give out the source code...and I need it to do other stuff, so rewrite it is. :p

@NathanC Programming and Alcohol => DevOps

@ChrisS Unfortunately, can't drink at work.
So, caffeine it is@!

@NathanC Well I'm about to down a caffeine pill with some green tea, so you're in good bad company.

2:09 PM
Though I saw a study. Programmers who are just less than buzzed work the most efficiently on average. (by "efficiently" they were the most productive per the time spent on a project, over a rather large timeframe - so it's not just statistical noise).

Remember how we were discussing that I work 8 hours, travel 2 hours, and only get 6 hours of sleep? Well, I've decided to start taking college classes after work on top of that! I may have to learn to survive with little to no sleep soon. Anyone got any tips to avoid needing the sleep?

@NathanC Rumple Minze, blue food dye, and an empty bottle of Cool Mint Listerine. Problem solved.
2

@ChrisS Probably because it takes your self-doubt and paranoia down a notch so you can actually focus on a task.

Though considering the taste of Rumple Minze, you might be better off drinking the Listerine...

@KevinSoviero There now. 8.5 hours @ Work if you count lunch

2:10 PM
@BigHomie Actually 9 hours if you count lunch

@KevinSoviero Be prepared to fail a class or three on account of not having the time to do it all. I'm learning this the hard way with a colic baby, 50+ hours work, and trying to take two classes per semester.

@KevinSoviero and I leave work to pick everybody up, drop them off @ home, then drive back to work to go to school (Work @ a Uni)
WHERE'S MY WOLF MEME

@ChrisS Uh oh, she's a bit fussy? =|

@Tanner Unfortunately my taste in alcohol is...limited. I guess I'm sensitive to bitter tastes or something because most alcoholic stuff tastes horrible to me

@KevinSoviero With a toddler an infant

2:12 PM
@Wesley I'd have to read the study again, but I think it was the lack of focus that allowed the programmers to get more done... They got less fixated on issues which were holding them back, and more "creative" in their complex problem solving.

You want sleep tips? SLEEP IS A FIRST WORLD PROBLEM.
;)

@BigHomie Sleep is for the sleepy.

@Wesley Yes. In the same way that a murderer has done "a bit" of physical harm to someone.
3

@ChrisS D=

@KevinSoviero Why would you do work + school when you live with your parents? If you want to go to school, focus on that only.

2:13 PM
@ChrisS I only plan to take Chemistry I Lecture and Lab this semester. I have an aptitude for Chemistry, so I should be okay.
@Tanner I'm going to school for fun, work comes first.
@Tanner I'm getting a simple 2 year degree in Biology, not something I could use to get a job or anything.

I'm pretty sure my hearing has been knocked down a few notches by her screaming in my ear for hours - and I noticed the other day that my left eye can't focus on things that are close to it anymore... Our parents weren't kidding when they said we destroyed their lives physically and socially.

@KevinSoviero Never overlook niches

@KevinSoviero School for fun? I would if I could afford it
I'd like to get my MBA...
but graduate school is even more expensive and financial aid does fuck-all for post-grads

@NathanC It's community college, a semester is less than $500...

@KevinSoviero You mean you're single and you stay at home? Tell me more about how the other half lives

2:18 PM
@BigHomie: low costs. very little fun ;p

@KevinSoviero Meh, couldn't even do that...

@KevinSoviero If you're going to invest in your future, make sure there's a decent chance of return.
Just a heads up from the other half
@JourneymanGeek yeah, it's a little hazy, but I recall that
@JourneymanGeek I actually had plenty fun though

Oh, I did on occation

@BigHomie The ROI is my personal enrichment... That really is enough for me.

its shit when you're 30 and still in school :/

2:19 PM
@NathanC If you're going to chase an MBA, pick one of the top 20 schools and commit your life to it for 2 years. Otherwise you're probably better off working your way up the ladder.

@JourneymanGeek Really? I plan to take classes forever on everything from bio and chem, to history and literature. I love to learn.

@KevinSoviero: still in school. I don't mean doing stuff for fun ;p

@JourneymanGeek ah

Today's challenge: How would YOU deal with this? - Client: I need to be able to send a 35 meg .eps file to a person at <Produce Industry Newspaper>. It's an ad. I can't attach it because of size. Is it possible?

@JourneymanGeek Like I said. First. World. Problem.

2:21 PM
@ewwhite: if it isn't confidential, just pick a file-host of some sort

@ewwhite dropbox or onebox, since I don't have a dropbox account.

we use dropbox at my dad's office for that sorta thing

@ewwhite Is it a security risk to post to Dropbox, Box.net, etc?

@ewwhite zipping is dirty for n00bs

@KevinSoviero Depends on what you post.

2:22 PM
@KevinSoviero I hope not since it's an ad

@BigHomie: more like lots of mistakes.

but you never know

@JennyD I meant for his specific case.

The file is an .eps file.

Some of which I regret less than others.

2:23 PM
@ewwhite Jesus! A 35MB EPS file, what's in there!?

@JourneymanGeek yep, then other programs get invovled, just hairy

@KevinSoviero Well, the ad is going to be public anyway, so I don't really see the problem. Also, email is approximately as secure as a postcard, so Dropbox isn't less secure.

@KevinSoviero: everything.

@JennyD Agreed

@ewwhite Put it up on whoever, whatever is hosting their website. Make a directory like temp1234/amazingad.eps and have them email the link to someone. Delete the file when they're done.

2:23 PM
@ewwhite zip the file?

I've done that a lot.

@KevinSoviero Though it seems to me that the newspaper would have some sort of uploading service other than email; you can't be the only people with this problem.

So I can bump mail limits up from the 25 Meg limit there now... but I'd have to do it in 6 places... Exchange, Exchange, Barracuda, Barracuda, Exchange Smart Host, Exchange Smart Host.

@Wesley: getting the file to the host with a n00b on one end is hard

@JourneymanGeek Right, but I assumed @ewwhite was going to be more involved in the solution, like "I'll remote right in and take care of it."

2:25 PM
@ChrisS I didn't do half bad this semester, homework has always been my enemy, colicky newborn or not

@ewwhite EPS files are plain text, it should compress rather nicely with something like gzip.

@JennyD I asked the client if the newspaper could even receive mails that large... Yes

@ChrisS and yes, a colicky newborn was involved

@BigHomie: I averaged 60 on a module last term... then got flunked on the exam

@ewwhite Yes, but they must have other clients who have size limits... (and yes, compressing usually works great with .eps)

2:25 PM
@JourneymanGeek Ouch

(its a management module, so, I wasn't expecting great grades)

@ewwhite Oh god - bytehoard, owncloud, FTP/FTPS, not email!

And that got me into a funk.

Is "60 on a module" good?
Honeslty no idea how your system works...

I need to get me believing in my own awesome again

2:26 PM
@MikeyB don't let @voretaq7 see this. Just sayin'.

@ChrisS: Its usually a sure pass.

Bob
@ChrisS it's "passable"

@MikeyB client is stubborn and irritable... so he may view this as me putting barriers in the way.

@ChrisS: I got roughly 20% on the finals. I failed overall by 3%
it stank

Bob
>=50 pass, I believe >=65 credit, >=75 distinction, >=85 high distinction... or somewhere around there

2:27 PM
da

@JourneymanGeek Is it common to get something like a 20% on a final?

@ChrisS: No

But considering I'm the smarthost for this customer, I don't want to bump limits for a 35Mb email.

Lecturer seemed to think my work was crap, and I missed something he felt was important

@KevinSoviero Living without sleep requires crystal meth. I can hook you up with a purveyor of high quality stuff, if you'd like.

2:28 PM
@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork I have caffeine for that.

@Bob Do you have that same sort of system?

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork failing that, lay in a stock of chocolate covered coffee beans.

Its still a kick in the balls

@ChrisS: My uni is in the same country he's in

2:28 PM
Grr...I accidentally chose the wrong close reason. But regardless this one will die a quick death:

Q: Hosting 200 Users. Cloud vs Dedicated?

Plic PlI want to host 200 Users somehow. (I will be the only admin, they don't need to have cPanel etc). Now my question is, what would be the best approach to do this? Cloud hosting? Multiple Dedicated Server? Is it possible to do this on a single IP but multiple server? Whats the most secure, stable...

@JourneymanGeek Oh, I assumed you were taking classes "locally"

@KevinSoviero I'll see your pills and raise you some red bull

@ChrisS: Classes are local, exams are usually marked locally and moderated. Uni is in oz

Bob
@ewwhite 35Mb? o.O

@KevinSoviero Yeah, caffeine stops doing much of anything really quickly. I did a few quarters working a full time job and taking a double course load. After a few weeks, I developed an immunity to caffeine that I still have to this day.

2:29 PM
Interesting - I know a couple other people who are doing something similar, though they're in South Korea, taking classes in Aussieland.

Bob
@TheCleaner I'm scared to ask what he's trying to do.

@Bob is that large for email in 2014?

I have plans (they're having the Aust lecturer's lectures on video from this term, so I'm going to watch them too)
@ewwhite: kinda

Bob
@ewwhite It's not something I'd even consider sending by email.

most free services have a 10mb limit

2:30 PM
@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork How much were you doing?? I can usually cycle on and off when I hit a tolerance

Bob
33% overhead, to start with - your 35 MB file becomes a 53 MB email.

@ewwhite YES! <10 MB, or I beat you with a Cat5 cable/

@JourneymanGeek I set my Exchange servers to 25Mb just because...

@ewwhite We limit to 10MB, have for a long, long time

Bob
And 50MB boxes are still remarkably common with businesses :\

2:31 PM
Client: I zipped it to 13 megs and their server rejected it. I will call them. Thanks.

@ewwhite Yeah, we limit to 10 in $enterprise also, hotmail I believe is 20 so it all depends

@BigHomie I was seriously washing down caffeine pills with big cups of coffee or Mountain Dew, several times a day. It was... not a pleasant way to live.

I wouldn't assume someone outside the org can receive over 20

some servers reject zip files

@Bob sounds like he wants to just host 200 user's websites...and wants to know what the backend hosting should look like. Not inspiring a lot of confidence as a webhosting provider.

2:31 PM
for 'security'

@JourneymanGeek geez... you're right.
.rar ALL THE THINGS!!!

might work

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork What's that, an immunity you say?

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork That explains it then, sounds dangerous. When I need to pull an allnighter it's a cup of black for me, but with the kids I don't even need to do that most times

1. Yes, it's possible 2. If you're supposed to be a sysadmin, the proper answer is that creating two shortcuts for morons who can't find them on their own is stupid bullshit you don't don't have time for, as you're too busy planning the upgrade form Windows 20003 to Windows 2012. — HopelessN00b Genius of network 7 mins ago

2:32 PM
I just like saying RAWR (.rar)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Ours rejects .js files.

Bob
Allows zip, though.

I used to down a bottle of coke a day at one point ;p

@ewwhite We can peek rars too

Bob
2:33 PM
I've had to zip some scripts before sending -_-

@KevinSoviero Caffeine in a fine white powder eh? Sure.

I'm down to a single cup of good coffee (with milk!) a day. Almost entirely water, with at most a glass of fruit juice otherwise

Bob
because, JS is so dangerous in an email attachment!

@BigHomie: amusingly, both are lethal.

@Bob yeah, and their PST files are huge and never backed up. :)

2:34 PM
@JourneymanGeek Caffeine isn't lethal unless you downed that entire bag in one sitting. As I recall, the human limit w/o any tolerance is 250mg.

@TheCleaner Sounds like they need them Cleaned
CWIDT

Bob
@TheCleaner Uh, cough *looks at dir full of PSTs* :P

@KevinSoviero: precisely

@BigHomie Actually, I use that... spike some of my ecig liquid with caffeine, so I don't have to suck down coffee to avoid withdrawal. :)

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork Man you got it bad, I can go a couple days w/out it

Uptime guarantee: ~50%, give or take.

@Bob Mostly take

Get a cluster of iscsi booted raspis! ;p

No PSTs here... :)

@ChrisS Working up the ladder is probably best for me then...
@KevinSoviero 250mg without tolerance? I thought it was more in the range of 500+mg

posted on April 25, 2014 by Scott Pack

As old as it is RADIUS is still a pretty nice tool for getting non-Windows services to authenticate against Active Directory. It's pretty natively supported in most all network devices, has well tested PAM modules, and is well understood by infrastructure systems like load balancers. Hell, it's even the preferred authentication type for some two-factor systems such as Windows Azure Mult

Well, the deadly dose for someone 180lbs (average) is 12,150mg roughly....

@NathanC So that 100,000mg bag I posted earlier is a murder weapon?

@KevinSoviero I once found out that eating ~30 chocolate covered coffee beans in as many minutes made me all twitchy

@KevinSoviero Yeah, but you'd probably have better luck suffocating someone with it than getting all that caffeine powder in their stomach.

2:56 PM
Desktop PC question for a normal employee. i3 with 8GB ram or i5 with 4GB of RAM? I am thinking the first choice...yes/no?

@KevinSoviero Possibly, but it's very difficult to overdose accidentally
As the physical effects as you get closer to the toxic dose would probably prevent it

@KevinSoviero everything is a murder weapon if applied correctly

@NathanC How about being shot with a shotgun shell filled with caffeine powder... Maybe with the caffeine fused together into larger crystals akin to rock salt.

Show him how it's *easier*?
(hey, on that note, what's he running? I know T-bird has some add-ons to make the uploading and link sharing transparent)

By the way, this is the degree plan I'm following: austincc.edu/biology/degreeplan.html
More or less.

3:04 PM
@KevinSoviero Oh god that's fucking dangerous, wow

@KevinSoviero Like caffeine buckshot?

@BigHomie Yup!

Youtube, your home page always has things I figure will be crap but I click them and laugh...thank you.

Q: What are the mathematical implications of an overly-restrictive password policy?

Bob
@TheCleaner Go for more RAM rather than the CPU.
If this were a home user, I'd probably say get the CPU and add RAM later. But you'll probably never add RAM here.

3:14 PM
@ewwhite I love that question! It seems like something I would ask...

Bob
And 4 GB can actually be an issue, depending on what they're doing.

OK, I'm laughing out loud now..."you want an assassin pig? You know you can't just purchase one at the mall..." - I'd have watched twilight if that's how the movie had went.
@Bob yeah, that's what I ended up with.

Bob
Then again, it does depend on what software you're running, but I'm having trouble thinking of anything really CPU-heavy on a "normal employee"'s machine.

@TheCleaner starred for advice on not purchasing your assassin pigs from the mall.

Q: Hosting Websites of my Clients - but their own Domains

Plic PlLets say I want to host some Websites from my clients. Now I have purchased two Dedicated Servers, which have two different Ips. At least he did a not horrible job this time around.

@BigHomie He needs to just hire a part time admin/consultant to handle this. I volunteer @Wesley for the job!

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork I was thinking the same thing

@BigHomie Still deserving of my auto-comment. The OP is conducting research through SF basically.

3:37 PM
@KevinSoviero He needs to pay me for all the time I spend closing his questions.

@KevinSoviero Me too, this screams of a headache only an experienced consultant like @Wesley can handle.
@TheCleaner Yes, yes it does. Plus, I need the link again, so there's that.

Plic PlI have my hosting on Godaddy and domain on another provider. So I was thinking which would be a better option to point the domain to Godaddy hosting Change the name server to that of godaddy. Ughhh he's going to beat the record for fastest user question-banned

@Wesley Jesus... I was on this guys side like three questions ago, but this is getting ridiculous.

@Wesley he's trying to outpace you, creating questions faster than you can VTC!
2

And what's his reputation now, like -300?

3:41 PM
@TheCleaner No one can ask faster than I can VTC. I may or may not have a Selenium instance that monitors users of my choice and auto-VTCs...

You and Ward both.

@Wesley Not sure what alien poison has to do with this. ;)

Chance of that user posting in Meta?

@TheCleaner Didn't seem ragey enough. I think 20%
Either way, ten downvotes and three closed questions in 30 minutes takes dedication to the cause.

@Wesley likely...if he does it will be a plea for help not a rant I'm guessing.

Q: Why are laptop screens sized the way they are?

TheCleanerWe've been discussing this in the Comms Room on Serverfault, and thought it might make a good question on SuperUser...especially if there's a clear answer. The hope is that it is a Good Subjective question. Why do laptop screen sizes come in the fractional sizes they do instead of 11/12/13/14/1...

that's better
@TheCleaner downvoted for great shame.

@TheCleaner I was an original voter so I'm out.

@voretaq7 that's OK, freaking @Wesley VTC'd the question originally. ;)

@TheCleaner I was going to, but it had already been done!

3:51 PM
@TheCleaner Take that VTCers.

@TheCleaner well he IS a cat...

@TheCleaner Screw you, I should get a badge. That's like the Gordie Howe hatrick of StackExchange. 1) Upvote, 2) Successfully VTC, 3) Successfully re-open and earn OP a silver badge.

Funny that my highest voted question here got +25. I should've been asking questions when I started and the rep was "making it rain".
@Wesley hahaha...indeed.

@ShaneMadden would appreciate that analogy.

@TheCleaner Well, SF is stingier with the upvotes, so there's that too.

3:53 PM
@Wesley That's why I starred it.

@ShaneMadden :-*

Hell, on SuperUser, you can slam your head into the keyboard a few times, post it, and get an upvote.

@ShaneMadden always lurking...

Dan
@TomO'Connor Sounds about right from what I know of you!

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork I think self-harm is a requirement for posting on SuperUser.

Dan
3:54 PM
Whoops, fucked that up - page hadn't refreshed since then

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork nowadays. Look at the questions from 4 years ago...you could ask "how does DNS work?" as the first person to ask it and get +53 in a heartbeat. Or ask "which port do most webservers listen on by default?" and get +80 within 2 minutes.

@Wesley Certainly a requirement for editing on SuperUser. Jesus fucking Christ. And then, apparently, some of the reviewers decline edits because the post is too old.

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork You really need to get elected, if for no other reason than I love schadenfreude and pandemonium.

@TheCleaner Well, even in general. Those questions on SU or SO would get 10 times the upvotes than they do here. (Even if we are stingier upvoters lately.)
@Wesley Heh. What do you know, those are the exact two reasons I'd actually do the mod job if I was elected. OH, and sadism. That's an important motivation too.
