3:00 AM
and the whole hollow point thing is an urban legend
LEO overwhelming uses hollowpoints

Yeah, I'm never sure about the legends I hear, becaus eplenty of poeple can cite court cases here and there, but... I jus tdon't know.

preventing overpenetration is good

Using hollowpoints is just the polite thing to do

Yeah, I know LEOs do, but I'm not a LEO so don't have a badge to cover me in court.

think of it this way, would you rather be sued for using ammo, or charged with murder or manslaughter for killing someone behind the perpetrator

3:01 AM
Good point.
The only firearm experience I have is shooting a few SKS assault riles in the early 90s. I was taught basic gun safety and respect, but that's about it.

only states like CA and NY try to negatively sensationalize JHP ammo
but righ tnow they're more concerned with banning rounds like the .50 BMG

You can go to your local range, and see what classes they offer too. If you're concerned about the law (which is a good thing when you carry), often times you can find a class that goes over that kind of stuff (for your area)

I think my mother told me that if I ever pointed a weapon, loaded or not, at a living thing she'd make sure that my "living" status was suddenly and violently revoked. ;)

haha, good mom

Yeah, there's a gun club in the area that gets high recommendations from many firearm owners that I know. They even offer a certificate of completion that is apparently smiled upon by the law enforcement

3:03 AM
I wish I could still carry, stupid state

that's my big thing, I want to know how to use the thing smartly and safely. I don't even want to own before I go through a decent amount of training.

really don't need much honestly

It's no small responsibility to have a few pounds of metal that can change multiple people's lives for eternity in a matter of milliseconds.

point and pull the trigger
otherwise, don't point, and dont touch the trigger

Dang that G37 looks like a missile launcher.

3:04 AM
@hobodave yeah I'm restricted too. Work in a school environment, in Baltimore and DC. It's like the trifecta of gun restrictions.

they just flat out don't allow it here

And I work in less than "hospitable" areas

Illinois and Wisconsin, the only damn states

ahh
Illinois sucks for that

I moved from VA

3:05 AM
All you guys, move to AZ. ;)
No, better yet, change the laws in your own states. Work for reform.

I thought Wisconsin was making a move to open that up some...?

I do
I basically tithe to the NRA
dunno, I'm in IL

hmmm

@hobodave VA>IL

I used to live in Vegas. Have thought about moving back out but maybe in a few years....
@voretaq7 mmmh?

3:07 AM
@voretaq7 hmmmmmm

::yawn:: :P

copy that

I love my Remy 870
if I had to shoot an intruder that would be my weapon of choice
pretty much game over

lol

3:09 AM
shotguns are pretty good for that kind of thing. But you will get plenty of overpenetration... have to watch where you point that thing

I want one that says "Have a Nice Day"

it all depends @Holocryptic

Yeah, I'm very leary of shotguns in the house. My mom wants one, but I demand that she wait until I move out when business takes off.

Or "life is good", like on the back of Jeeps

thats where your choice of rounds come in
my first round is 22 birdshot

3:09 AM
there was an blog I read, let me see if I can dig it up....

close range it will f you up and a smart person will stop
after that it's 00 buck
I've seen a study done that shows that 1 or 2 buckshot is best for home defense and avoiding penetration
I have slugs in my side saddle
just in case armored intruders ever come

Yeah, I'm worried about armored intruders these days.
Thus wanting a .40 or .45

lol
those won't go through body armor

@hobodave Well then I know not to rob @hobodave

Okay, I see my assumptions are wrong.

3:11 AM
yea, pretty much no pistol round will go through body armor
hell even buckshot won't

Maybe I should go all Ice-T and get some cop killers.

but a slug? that will tear some shit up
a solid ounce of lead 1" in diameter

@WesleyDavid ok clearly we all just need a MacMillian Tac50... That'll solve any armor issues...

it's literally the equivalent of being hit by a train going 70 mph

Eat pellets suckah!

3:12 AM
@hobodave Lead is bad for the environment :)

teflon coated bullets

yea those are outlawed almost anywhere

AA-12 fully automatic shotgun

ala Lethal Weapon

3:13 AM
slugs aren't :)

@hobodave but if your walking toward it...

Fully auto Glocks.

lol

"Amerikuh, FUCK YEAH!"

"going to save the motherfuckin day, YEAH!"

3:15 AM
that's my baby
and two of my toes apparently

a bunch of sysadmins talking about guns
this can only end in cooling problems

lol

haha
@hobodave is that a Surefire at the front?

@Holocryptic you know it

pretty sweet rig

3:16 AM
it has the high intensity bulb too, blind the hell out of you
my next addon is going to be a red dot sight

Very nice, @hobodave. Use that to solve Trevor's MySQL problem. "KILL this, biyatch!"

nice

@voretaq7 duh we have to maintain MAX uptime under any situation...
Devotion to Duty

^^^^^^^^^^

SOOOO deserves a star...

3:18 AM
@hobodave Any experience with the Glock C series? Are they worth the hype?

are you strong @WesleyDavid?
are you an anorexic geek, sporty geek, or sloppy geek?

that's not a real sysadmin

@voretaq7 counter example please....

a real sysadmin would have spliced the cables and shot everyone (including the hostages)
2
Users only serve to provide a test load ;)
2

hahaha

3:20 AM
@hobodave I'm average in most ways, but I'm a bit of a weightlifting fanatic. I'm a hard gainer though. I get stronger, not bigger. I'm 5'10 and 165-ish. 14% BF if I was to guess. So... not sure if that answers your question.

I hope you're not trying too hard to figure out if you're strong or not
you should know this

I'm not built like a tank, ala Zypher. That dude is unbelievable. ;)

heh

well the C stands for compensated
the barrel is vented so there is less kick

Right, I was thinking it would make for more accurate second shots.

3:21 AM
If you were to get a larger caliber, it might help

in the daytime
in low lighting or night, no
the flash will blind you

@WesleyDavid F*** second shots... Don't miss Your a sys admin.... You should have training in server defense

@hobodave that too

well not "blind" but jack your night vision
if you're looking at 9mm the C is for girls
.40 and .45 there is a case to be made

That's why you get picatinny rail system with surefire attachment :)

3:22 AM
just depends on how well you shoot and how strong your forearms are, and how bad your stance is
.40 and .45 are both powerful rounds but in different ways
.40 is fast as hell, it has a sharp crack of a kick

I really still think keeping a MacMillian Tac50 around would be better :)

.45 is stronger, slower, and is more of a shove

@hobodave any handguns that shoot a 7.62? =)

yep

no but there is a handgun that shoots a rifle round
belgian
ok i take back that no, there's probably some maniac who has made a handgun to shoot 7.62

3:25 AM
There's cut-down AK-47s you can get, that legally qualify as handguns

FN Five-Seven, it shoots the 5.7x28mm round

can't remember who makes it or the designation though

@Holocryptic I've seen those. Crazy stuff.

same round used in the FN P90

Night all

3:26 AM
The FN Five-seven, trademarked as the "Five-seveN", is a semi-automatic pistol designed and manufactured by FN Herstal in Belgium. The pistol's name refers to its 5.7-mm (.224 in) bullet diameter, and the name's unusual capitalization style is intended to spell out the manufacturer's initials, FN. The Five-seven was developed in conjunction with the FN P90 personal defense weapon and 5.7x28mm ammunition. The P90 was introduced in 1990, and the Five-seven was introduced in 1998 as a pistol using the same 5.7x28mm ammunition. As a companion pistol to the P90, the Five-seven shares m...

Night J.

later @Jacob
@hobodave that's a nice gun to shoot

great videos on youtube
very little kick

but the ammo price....

yea a bit ridic
and it's gimped in the USA

3:26 AM
My dad had an SKS with a carbon retractable stock and 30 round banana clips. Not sure how he did it, but I think it was grandfathered from before the assault weapon ban. I do believe the clips were illegal regardless of grandfathering though. That was a hoot of a weapon to shoot.

they don't let you get the armor piercing or HE rounds
though i've heard the 5.7x28mm can still penetrate a vest
not sure out of the pistol though

the 94 "assault weapons ban" only prevented the manufacture or import of new magazines over a 10 round count
so if it was made before then, it got grandfathered in

they're trying to bring that shit back too

He had the bayonette mount and bayonette for it too.

I know, it pisses me off
oooo, that was pre 86 then, I think

3:28 AM
It looked very much like this, but this is an AK

or maybe that was part of the 94 one.... I can't keep all their stupid regulations in place....

Dad has a AK 74...

hmmm, that's an odd caliber

What's an odd caliber?

@Jacob 's dad's AK74

3:31 AM
oh yeah, It's a 5.something, right?

5.45mm

So what's more powerful, the 5.45 AK74 or a .40? How does power get calculated, what are the factors to take into account?

power is a bit of an arbitrary word. It depends on what you're trying to accomplish really

whe I lived in VA I had an HK SL8-6
I miss it

@hobodave why you move?

3:32 AM
work
experience somethiing different

@hobodave how's that IL budget working out for you?

Wow, that HK looks damn sweet.

it's basically the civilian G36

oooo, want

I got a great deal on it, the gunstore sold it to me thining it was an SL8-1
I paied $1700 instead of $2500

3:34 AM

then I modded the hell out of it

Looks like the assault rifle in Marathon - if anyone remembers that game <3 <3

@WesleyDavid those are fun to shoot

sold it for $3500, $1k profit

@hobodave nice
@WesleyDavid the recoil on those things is ridiculous. In a good way.

3:35 AM
when I went to the range it was hilarious
everyone was like WTF IS THAT?

"This is my BOOMSTICK!!"

it stayed so clean
much better than my AR-15
gas piston w/ rotating bolt > direct impingement

gawd, cleaning those are a pain in the ass

@WesleyDavid Its in most FPS I think Its a FN90?

3:37 AM
Looks like you're shooting a porpoise.

@WesleyDavid XMB-8

"Stop or my dolphin will shoot you!"

lol

I think they discontinued that one

Malaysian Badass:

3:38 AM
best sight I've ever used:

Honestly, the first rifle I'll get will likely be an AR15

amazing technology

@hobodave EOTech?

ya EOTech holographic
I put that on the SL8-6

3:39 AM
those are awesome

it was amazing

@WesleyDavid AR-15 is a great rifle. Just be prepared for a lot of cleaning

both eyes open, 1" group at 150 yards with no magnification

mmmm, sexy

it devoured batteries though

3:42 AM
yeah, I've heard that complaint. You forget to turn it off and a couple days later you can't turn in on again...

yea, but it's really like a real life video game
you can run near full speed with both eyes open and just tear shit up with accuracy

I used my friends AR with that sight on it for a 2-gun match, and was duly impressed

I used to have a fun little AR-15
had to get a tax stamp for that

One day, when I'm not crushed under the burden of student loans and other crap, I'll have enough money to buy a new rifle
oooo, shiny

preban AR lower, could go full auto but it was pinned semi
gas piston SBR P.O.F. upper

3:46 AM
yeah, I was looking at the selector switch

that little bit sticking out the front? that's not the barrel
it's a suppressor
definitely couldn't bring that to IL
or many other states

Anyone seen the this "AM15" .22 fully automatic with 180 rounds?

Suppressors follow closely behind hollowpoints in being the polite thing to do

lol

that made me giggle

3:48 AM
lol

sigh, well, I'm off to bed. It's been fun. I'll talk to you guys tomorrow

you can turn an AR-15 full auto with a rubber band
have a good one @Holocryptic

@hobodave you too. And that looks like assisted bump fire.... :)

well yea, close enough :)

4:08 AM
oooo my kind of convo :)

4:25 AM
Video of JDAM being dropped on Taliban
Comment of the year: "What does JDAM stand for and how can I get one dropped on my wife?"

5:20 AM
Does anyone want to assist on a re-open?

Q: Changing WPA password on all domain computers?

We need to change a WPA password on about 1000+ computers in the domain. Reason for this, the password got leaked out and now students are accessing the network through wireless (eek). Anyways, anyone know of a way to do this programmaticly?

meh, not nearly enough info "windows" isn't nearly close enough ... it's a "give me teh codez" question

It kind of funny how the search "active directory wpa key" returns this in the top few Google results.
Answer? nope

ha

6:22 AM
I'd love to see the answer to that. I voted to reopen.

It doesn't look good. I didn't look for long, but all I got was tech-archive.net/Archive/Windows/…
Basically it's just an MVP saying not happening.

7:09 AM
Ok
time to sleep
after god knows how many hours of DA2

DA2? Night ^^

Dragon Age 2

Ah. forgot that came out! Is it awesome? Unfortunately, I won't have the time to play until I get back home, but that was one of the games I thought about buying.

7:25 AM
@coredump its moving kinda slow
combat feels wonky too
I don't remember what the old one played like really though

Combat feels wonky? What do you mean? What system are you playing on?

360
just feels like Im button mashing
no substance
anyway I'm going back to it

That sucks. I'm no fan of button mashing, I'd rather do it Jade Empire style (where you have to be pretty decent to actually do the cool stuff). Apparently it's good enough to suck you back in though :p

1 hour later…
9:01 AM
just giving it a fair shot
it starts reallllly slow
Im finally able to runaround and do shit now

How long did the slow part last? I tried the new Final Fantasy (13) and just couldn't do it. That's coming from a fan of the old ones lol.

like the first 30-45 mins of gameplay

Oh, that's not bad at all! Just long enough for tutorial ^^

except its not
its like a bad movie
4o mins of cutscene
5 mins of gameplay

Ugh. That many cutscenes? In the beginning? That was a bad design decision.

9:12 AM
right now I'm giving it a 3.5 out of 10

Ouch. What would you give the original?

I can't get to metacritic. I'm currently in the military... most "fun" sites are blocked 24/7 lol

oh
let me paste a users review
can you get to github?

Github works most of the time.

9:14 AM
I gree mostly with that

Sweet. I think this room refreshes too much or something. Proxy is refusing my login again (I think it refuses ever x num of requests to kill any flooding).

so far anyway

I'll check it out when it stops refusing me lol

heres my review @Vert
I don't normally write reviews, nor read them prior to playing a game. I enjoyed DA:O, so why wouldn't I try DA II? Big mistake. I'm 4 hours into the game, and I think I'm giving up. I'm bored. The first hour of the game is 45 minutes of badly written cutscenes and 15 minutes of combat. How is the combat? Terrible.
I just hold down a button. Being a rogue is usually a fun and interesting class to play. Nope, not in DA II. The characters are boring and uninteresting. They don't draw me in like they do in DA:O or Mass Effect. The voice acting is meiocre at best. It's like they took DA:O and watered it down with Fable 3.

9:33 AM
Damn. I usually play rogues in RPGs too. Weird, usually the cutscenes and story drag you into their games. They probably just overdid it this time : /

cutscenes are ok if they're not borig
the average user review on metacritic is 3.5

That's pretty awesome!
I've been waiting to get back to the states to play most multiplayer games. Did COD: Black Ops suck? Any good coop games come out lately? I think the one I'm excited about most is Borderlands:GOTY

I loved Borderlands. I just wish it had more guns.

COD Black Ops was ok
single player was playable
zombie mode was fun for 2 days
multiplayer was just meh

I wish it had more types of guns like flamethrowers and such instead of just more variations of generic types. Elemental effects were awesoem though.

9:45 AM
I preferred MW2, but I'm also kinda over CoD and prefer BF now

awesome*
I've only played zombie mode once... it was fun for a bit until others joined me. If you don't get to at least level 20 every time, you suck. Zombie mode lived and died the same day for me lol.

its kinda sad when the most fun I've had playing games lately has been on my iPad
oh Dark Space 2 was fun
so I don't sound like a total curmudgeon

That does kinda show where things are heading though...
I'm excited about playing the Dark Space games as well.

I never played the first
saw a terrible review of it
saw a bad review of the second too, but I decided to try it anyway

I did too, but I've had a lot of people tell me it was awesome.

9:48 AM
the only reviews I trust are Zero Punctuation
2

I've never even heard of them. Is that why they are trustworthy to you? Less influence?

its a column by this guy named "yahtzee croshaw"
its a flash video thing, he's british, talkssuperfastlikethis
and is overwhelmingly negative
but he tells it like it is

Sounds hilarious

it is
I doubt you can access it

Nah, I can't.

9:51 AM
he was spot on with several of my favorite games

Anything with heavy flash, blogs, video games, computers/internet/can be construed as hacking, you name it...
all blocked lol

Portal, Psychonauts, Saints Row 2, Arkham Asylum, Deus Ex

Oh hey! Has there been any news on Deus Ex 3? I was really excited for that game when the trailers first came out. Portal 2 is prolly gonna be awesome too.

I dont keep up on news
I preordered it
Amazon says it ships December

I dunno if I want to get Portal 2 on console though... seems like it would really limit the amount of fun since there are only so many maps.

9:53 AM
i dont pc game anymore
I don't PC anymore
I like having a device just for playing games

December would be awesome. I get quite a few days off then, so Deus Ex would be fantastic then. No more PC?

yea I use Mac
total fanboy now, never going back

Unfortunately, I stopped playing because of all the DRM headaches. Because of the DRM, it made me go to console... which means even the DRM free PC games suffer. The only ones that are safe are Starcraft and Steam games :p
Lol, fanboy? I've never been a user, but being an admin for a few macs threw me quite a bit. Very different from Linux distros and Windows.

I'm not even sure I know how to use windows any more
I would never use a linux laptop
GNOME and KDE both look like shit

Unfortunately, my job has made me a Windows pro lol.

Sam
9:57 AM
I went console games only for a while, but I missed PC gaming to much, especially for strategy gaming, so now I have a PS3, Macbook Pro for working on, and a gaming PC, probabley a bit excessive but hey

I think I outgrew strategy gaming
as in, I got too old
almost all of them sucked since Starcraft

I like Gnome for easy usage. Even my wife uses it with no problems. I usually use either enlightenment or gnome (modified to my liking though).

Warcraft III was ok, but DotA was better

Starcraft 2 is good, but specs are way up there.

I didnt mind Age of Empires II

9:58 AM
Most RTS games aren't as good though.

I tried it on my 2008 macbook, ran like ass
I might try it again when I upgrade
yea i never got into most of them
and my skills went away

I tried a few like Rome: Total War and such, but... still nothing beats SC (and now SC2).

now there's just so many people that take that shit soooo seriously and spend hours studying strategies

The only thing about SC2 is they fell for DRM bs too.

I can't compete with that
I want to play SC2 for the single player

9:59 AM
No LAN and I couldn't play it on my deployment because you have to be connected to 'net to install.
Agreed. I'm not as good with RTS's either. Having a life and a job did wonders for that lol.
