Q: Which one should I use?

GomaI am planning to take VPS but I am not sure which one should I choose of Linux? CentOS, Debian or Ubuntu. What is the best in everything?

:|

I am very close to start down-voting any answer to one of those bad subjective questions...

@Zoredache Release the downvote hounds!
Unless it's TomTom going all Fission Rearrangement on them.
In soviet Russia, vote downs you. In TomTom's world, Soviet Russia shuts the hell up and does what it's told.

So what happens when TomTom and Chuck Norris are in the same room?

@Zoredache E=Mc PWND

12:48 AM
@Zoredache singularity that sucks the earth into nothing ness, expect tomtom and chuck norris who are the only things that can escape a blackhole...

@WesleyDavid Stop! TomTom Time!

BTW, Has he ever been in Chat? Does he know we find it entertaining to talk about him behind is back?

@Zoredache I don't think so

Nope, TomTom has not been sighted in chat. I'm very careful not to @ him so nothing shows up in his inbox.

Now if some random mod went back and edited every post containing his name to include said @ sign, that would be spectacular to watch.

12:51 AM
If TomTom came into the chat room I'd be like a 14 year old girl seeing Justin Bieber. "SIGN MY LAPTOP!! vomits passes out"

@WesleyDavid, AFAIK, that shouldn't matter. The @user only works if the user has been in the channel in the last ~24 hours.

Let's find out.

On a slightly related note, I noticed a bunch of spelling mistakes in one of his recent rant answers. I'm debating whether it would be worthwhile to go back and proof all of his answers.

@TomTom Come into chat. We love you.

Or if I would just be calling attention to myself.

12:52 AM
@packs Do it!

I might earn a copyeditor badge out of it.

what is about TomTom that i am missing :(

@packs Thats like... Death by TomTom

@fmysky, he is a bit of a troll. He seems happen to be completely rude and tell people they are being an idiot.
He does post some useful answers though.

So, am I getting old, or is Facebook really that much more complicated than it used to be?
@Zoredache Right, he's one of those unfortunate people who is just good enough that you really have to think twice about just ignoring him.

12:58 AM
@Zoredache somebody make a troll badge lol

That has been suggested dozens of times on meta.so. The answer badges are supposed to encourage positive behaviors.

@Zoredache true that

1:22 AM
@packs The servers just had a hard Tomtom...
what should we do..?

We are in the process of shifting IP ranges, they're on reservations until we're done

everyone ok? Iain got that thing, going in the post shortly :)

What with our student newspaper being called 'The Post' that phrase is a little scary to me.

@chopper3 great

1:16 PM
@Chopper3...appleTV?

yeah, great, love 'em
remember I had two disks die in my netapp the other day, well another's just died now :(

@Chopper3: ever have the AppleTV not be able to find home sharing?

sorry no

I had it happen twice, I turned off home sharing on the laptop and turned it back on and it reappeared after a few minutes. Just a network discovery glitch and I'm being impatient maybe?

@BartSilverstrim Gremlins.

1:21 PM
Could be.
I also have it take awhile with the Remote app on the iPod, but wrote that off to wireless gremlins. Remote will say it can't find the AppleTV for several minutes then it seems to work fine.
Maybe I'm just impatient with it.

Wireless Gremlins are the most tenacious of the species.

They're insidious because they're invisible on the ethertubes.
@Chopper3: is your AppleTV wired or wireless?

wireless

Hmm. And the controlling computer is online all the time I'll assume?

I just picked up a WD TV Live and the wife couldn't be happier with it. The interface could be a bit better, but she can figure it out, and that's all that matters. My only gripe right now is apparently it doesn't decode FAAC encoded audio, have to figure that one out still.

1:28 PM
yep, basically it's a mac mini server

Still strange. My laptop was never offline the whole time.
It was actually downloading Transformers Prime for the little guy all day.
I don't know. Maybe it was just a glitch.
This is strange too...I can't find a setting to automatically search for shared lists under iTunes.
Thought it was in the shared "tab" under preferences.

You really want Chopper3Spawn#1, he's the one that uses it most of the time - he's a school right now, then rowing and band practice but I can get him on here after if you like

If the problem persists I might take you up on that. Right now I'll just write it off to the laptop being wireless and the AppleTV being wireless and that goofy things will be fixed in another three iOS releases.
Thanks, @Chopper3
What time is it where you are now anyway?
Hmm...strange.

@Chopper3 Is @Chopper3[1] younger than @Jacob?
then he'd lose his rank as youngest person on SF.

There is no "look for shared libraries" in the sharing tab for itunes preferences.
This sucks, I actually RTFM'd and it's wrong?

@jscott there is the new Deputy badge Achieved maximum flag weight by reviewing and flagging appropriately

2:17 PM
okay, this is retarded.
Juniper EX switch... server stops responding on a port
configure new port with exact same configuration
server comes back up

Have you tried turning it off and back on?
5

heh, smartass.. :)

HAHAHA

yes, the server has been rebooted
but... same config? works on one, and not the other?

Can you change which port has that config to see if that particular port is bad?

2:19 PM
well, i don't think its' a bad port, if I plug a laptop into the same port, it works!
this is the 3rd time i've moved this server

Maybe your server has something bad on it's network card.

after about 24 hours on the port, it stops communicating on that port, if i move it to one i've never used before, it works
spanning tree shows the port still in forward state

shh...gremlins...
bane of IT Ninjas...
If moving the cable to another port seems to re-init the connection on the server, and the ports on the switch share the same config and work with the laptop, sounds like it may be the network card on the server.
Anything in the logs?
Or a flaky cable.
Squirrels in the ceiling? I hate them.

2:29 PM
Weird would be if you found the server LARPing.
I cast blue screen at you! Ptew! Ptew!
@Spaceman: maybe driver needs updating on the server for the network card?

its a cisco callmanager publisher
can't exactly update the driver, maybe the firmware though.

does anyone know one?

@jscott @MatthewSteeples yep ... I do like em (except the dc not being staffed on the weekends but that was my own fault for not checking before i came up on a sunday)
@coredump what are you trying to do ?

I need an US IP address for my connection to test a thing :P

@coredump Could you use Tor at all? torproject.org

@Coredump: I don't think idle hands are a computer geek's problem on a day off.

@BartSilverstrim idle hands are every MAN's problem on a day off

@MatthewSteeples Tor would slow down Steam^W errr The Test pretty significantly.

3:11 PM
@jscott He may only need it to unlock the game^W initialise the test as a one off connection

@MatthewSteeples tor can exit by various different points. I need specifically US or Canada FOR MY TEST
I am rofling so hard here I think I will pass out

@coredump Couldn't remember if there was a GUI that would let you "select" an exit point

I have a VPS but it's openvz and openvpn didn't work
ok
found a vpn service cheap enough

does the "shadow copy" service provide for the ability on NTFS based systems to right click and choose properties -> restore previous version? Is that the service that provides that facility?

@drachenstern Yes it is
(among other things)

3:15 PM
Yeah, I just wanted to make sure I was linking the front end feature in particular to the right back end service
I realize it does a lot more than that, and I know fundamentally what it's doing at the OS level, it's the name that causes me grief at times ;)

See, idle hands not a problem for him.

@packs I am open like that.

where would I post a tutorial for supervisord and it's quirks? Is there a site for that?
Basically I have an answer to a problem no one has asked...
but I had soooo much pain with it I want to share

3:37 PM
@Thomaschaaf how unique is the problem?
we're not really a "tutorials" site, but if it's a "Why does X happen?" / "It's because of Y, to prevent it do Z" kind of scenario that you think will come up in other people's environments you can always post a question & answer it yourself :-)

That's what I'd do...post the question and then answer it yourself.
Whippin' out da big gunz, gettin' indexed by the Googles...

I once got a site so badly coded that the robots were breaking it
Anyway, a interesting information about the saying "idle hands are the devil's tools", in portuguese we say "An empty head is the devil's workshop".

Sam
What are we doing with Tag Wiki edits that have been grabbed straight from wikipedia (with no attribution)? There are a couple of edit approvals for these.

okay I guess won't share my knowledge then..
or maybe I'll actually do a blogpost

@Thomaschaaf post a question and answer it yourself. That's perfectly fine

3:45 PM
@BenPilbrow @Thomaschaaf encouraged even

Definitely - I've done it before
Had a weird-ass issue that I thought someone else might stumble across
It's got 421 views, so people are definitely looking at it and hopefully it's helping someone

@Coredump I guess the question is that if the hands are the tools and the empty head is the workshop...how big is this lazy person's nose that he gets them in there?

@BartSilverstrim So is that how Arnold that that big glowing marble in there?

@Packs: that's just how he got it out. There's probably a longer tool that shoved it in another way.

@BartSilverstrim I'm willing to accept that argument.

3:53 PM
@BartSilverstrim Pretty sure it was like those foam-dinosaurs-in-a-capsule. Put it in there, it gets wet and expands.

That could be it too.
Some kind of snot-sponge.

@Sam If it's a straight word for word rip (without attribution), I've been denying them. If they "made it their own" with sufficient rewording or rephrasing, or give proper attribution, it's approved... Just my 2¢

@ChrisS If there's no value add over Wikipedia's entry then I think we should be saying no to rep whoring...

well, there's spam, and then there's spam.
does everything pushing a product get brutally nuked like that?

Was I the only one confused with Chopper saying something about a spammer then having the Nubby Admin post show up as a feedsplat?

@tombull89 You can push your own products all day, but: 1. Your answer must stand alone as a valid and helpful answer without the product. 2. You must fully disclose your association with whatever your pushing. If you don't do both to the satisfaction of the community and/or mods it gets nuked.

>Be careful, because the community frowns on overt self-promotion and tends to vote it down and flag it as spam. Post good, relevant answers, and if they happen to be about your product or website, so be it. However, you must disclose your affiliation in your answers. **Also, if a huge percentage of your posts include a mention of your product or website, you're probably here for the wrong
easons.** Our advertising rates are quite reasonable; contact our ad sales team for details. We also offer free vote-based advertising for open source projects.

@BartSilverstrim heh, yes.

@Chopper3: and no, I only see 2 answers on the suspended guy's account showing up.

@ChrisS not seen some of the posts so I don't know how serious it was. for the flyby spammers a suspnsion is fair enough, but someone whos put in the time to answer other questions until 2021?
@Zypher I know about the affliation thing, I've quoted it a few times in comments.

@Zypher actually George, given 95% of the time it's me doing the deletion/banning perhaps we could come up with a rules of engagement type document as I'm sure i'm far from consistent

oh so suspended mean "barred from posting" not "unable to login"

@tombull89 Yeah, plus the suspension is only for one site... Chat and Meta are separate.

christ first time I've been @-tted with the sound on...made me jump.
ah Ok, not as bad as I thought then.
whats to stop a spammer "attack" SO, then get suspended, then "attack" SF, and so on?

@tombull89 The wrath of angry mods :)
I'd wager SO's mods are probably quicker on the banhammer what with there being more of them & more traffic...

4:31 PM
not a lot, we get hit by 'windowspasswordreset' all.the.fucking.time but luckily mods get alerts to brand new accounts who skip the Ts&Cs and post immediately - plus we have IP cross-referencing which helps A LOT

If someone is really trying that hard to spam they'll get IP banned pretty quick (Mods can't IP ban but the Big Cheese can).

Boss?

@voretaq7 heh. hell hath no fury like a woman mod faced with spam, then.

Oh... I see what they've done
The developer has left the company, and they just want it live because there is no one else to work on it.

@ITHedgeHog Does it all point to localhost? or C:\

@ITHedgeHog hard-coded the URLs to http://sitename.dev ?
@MatthewSteeples Ah, I see you've been to this dance before sir!

5:37 PM
@MatthewSteeples There are random %20's in the URL
That don't match the content

shit it into space

lol

@Chopper3 you mean %20?

lol

I'll fix it for $250

5:38 PM
I'll fix the developer for $25

the whole site

$50 if you want it to be humane.

I'm asking the evillest question. "What is the job code for work on this site?"
@voretaq7 I'd stretch to $5
For this particular Dev

That just gets them a whack in the back of the head with a shovel. No guarantee of permanent fixin'
$25 is whack 'em 'till they're dead.
$50 is I do it while they're asleep.
I offer a $5 discount if you supply the shovel though!

@voretaq7 Ubu 10.04 has a maxclients of 150

5:45 PM
Snow shovel or diggin' shovel?

@voretaq7 Any discount for providing a tire iron?

@BartSilverstrim Diggin'

@Zoredache what type of client?

@chopper3 really likes the "shit it into space" reply. I'm thinking this is a hint of what he's working on in his lair.

@packs mmh, maybe. but only if it's a puny dev. You can get a good swing going with a shovel...
@Zoredache This is what I would call "reasonable" :-)

5:45 PM
@voretaq7 Especially with a good old fashion pointy nose job

@Chopper3, scroll back a bit. This was about apache.

@BartSilverstrim Sewage treatment?

@BartSilverstrim I used to design systems for trading floors - that expression was about the nicest thing I'd hear out of the mouths of the traders on any given day - it stuck
@Zoredache ah, ok, cheers

Traders used that?
Strange as an outsider to picture million-dollar brokers saying "shit it into space."

their creative use of language, in particular their ability to describe in detail acts of sexual violence was astonishing

5:53 PM
One man's violence is another man's bondage room.

I slipped on the Delete key
I was holding Shift too
Ooops

so I've been playing with NexentaStor, ZFS is pretty amazing

Watch out for this guy - potential spammer

kill him with fire

@hobodave seen the cluster pricing?

5:56 PM
Not even a good one, either.

@Chopper3 it seems reasonable, unless we're looking at different things
oh that, that is a bit pricy at $4900
I was looking at "Simple HA"

@BenPilbrow thanks ben, I've commented and edited on their posts

still seems sane when compared to Oracle

@hobodave but what does 'simple HA' actually do? even the expensive on doesn't work for block shares
